Premier League predictions: Who will finish where in 2023-24?

Here we go again.
Time to discover if the crystal ball is any more accurate than last season, when the prediction of Manchester City as Premier League champions - not a fantastic feat of foresight, admittedly - proved correct but it was all pretty much downhill from there.

Still, fortune favours the brave, or the dim-witted, depending on your point of view, so let's have another crack at the annual Premier League predictions.

And, to get at least one excuse in early, there are still weeks to go before the transfer window closes at the time of writing.

Phil McNulty's predicted 2023-24 Premier League positions at a glance
Position   Club     Position (cont)   Club (cont)
1   Man City     11   West Ham
2   Liverpool    12   Palace
3   Arsenal     13   Fulham
4   Man Utd     14   Forest
5   Villa     15   Bournemouth
6   Chelsea     16   Everton
7   Newcastle     17   Burnley
8   Spurs     11   Wolves
9   Brighton     19   Sheff Utd
10   Brentford     20   Luton

1. Manchester City
Last season: Champions
It is difficult to see beyond Manchester City winning a sixth title in seven seasons as they look to follow up their Treble with more success.

The big-game influence of Ilkay Gundogan has gone, along with the match-winning verve of Riyad Mahrez, but a squad of frightening strength remains with the addition of Croat duo Mateo Kovacic, who will add experience and quality in midfield, and young defender Josko Gvardiol, who sound judges tip for future greatness.

Throw in the phenomenon that is Erling Haaland and the enduring genius of Kevin de Bruyne, allied to so many others, and the champions will be the same again for me this season.

2. Liverpool
Last season - 5th
With no silverware and no Champions League football, last season was a failure for manager Jurgen Klopp and his players, 12 months after they had won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and got to within two matches of an unprecedented quadruple. Suggestions of a hangover sounded suspiciously like excuses for under-achievement.

Klopp's planning was disrupted as the Saudi Pro League wielded its chequebook, leading to the departures of captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. He will now want more additions to those of Argentina World Cup winner Alex Mac Allister and young Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai, with Southampton's Romeo Lavia lined up next.

I am expecting a Liverpool resurgence, especially as they boast such firepower in attack with Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.

3. Arsenal
Last season - 2nd
Arsenal were superb for so long last season but cracked late on under relentless pressure from Manchester City.

The campaign still represented great progress as manager Mikel Arteta's side played some superb football, and they have had a statement summer in the transfer market in an attempt to go one better.

Declan Rice was signed for a hefty fee - potentially £105m - but will be an outstanding addition in midfield, while Arteta has also spent heavily on Kai Havertz - £65m from Chelsea. Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber could prove another top-class addition as Arsenal prepare for a Champions League campaign for the first time since 2016-17.

That's all in addition to the real quality Arsenal already had in Bukayo Saka, captain Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and others.

The Community Shield win over Manchester City was a morale booster too. So do I see Arsenal as title winners? No. Do I see Arsenal as trophy winners? Yes.

4. Manchester United
Last season - 3rd
The second phase of Erik ten Hag's rebuilding programme is under way after his first season brought the EFL Cup - United's first trophy since 2017 - and a return to the Champions League, as well as a run to the FA Cup final, which ended in defeat by Manchester City.

David de Gea has been replaced by Andre Onana, a keeper whose style fits more with Ten Hag's methods of playing out from the back, having worked with him at Ajax.

England midfielder Mason Mount will have sights set on reigniting his club career after a lost final season at Chelsea, and huge focus will be on new £72m striker Rasmus Hojlund. The Dane may need time and patience to become the spearhead United require, but at that price, he can hardly expect to ease his way in.

I am backing United to continue the improvements started by Ten Hag last season. No chance of the title but a decent bet for some silverware.

5. Aston Villa
Last season - 7th
I'm going out on a limb a bit here but I have a feeling we will see a very strong Aston Villa this season. They have shown some real ambition in the transfer market in support of elite manager Unai Emery after he took them back into Europe.

New defender Pau Torres has been highly regarded for some time while France winger Moussa Diaby will offer serious threat in attack. Youri Tielemans may also prove a sound addition on a free transfer from Leicester City.

Villa will also be worth a bet to win the Europa Conference League under the great knockout tournament specialist Emery, who has won the Europa League four times.

6. Chelsea
Last season - 12th
Chelsea are now being led by Mauricio Pochettino after the unrelenting abject misery of last term, during which three managers - Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard - took turns in charge, with a £600m spending spree bringing only a mid-table finish.

The revolving door has continued spinning this summer. Cesar Azpilicueta, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Kalidou Koulibay and N'Golo Kante have all gone, while a glaring omission from last season's spree has been corrected with the acquisitions of strikers Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, although the latter is currently injured.

There is undoubted talent in the squad in £107m Enzo Fernandez, while Mykhailo Mudryk will hope to show his true form. Levi Colwill could be a big star in defence, having signed a new deal after his success on loan at Brighton last season.

Midfield is an area that needs addressing, with Brighton's Moises Caicedo clearly the chosen one if a deal can be done.

Chelsea will be nowhere near the title, but I do believe Pochettino will put them on a better footing and they can never be ruled out of claiming some silverware.

7. Newcastle United
Last season - 4th
Heady days on Tyneside as manager Eddie Howe, backed by the resources of the club's Saudi Arabian owners, led Newcastle back into the Champions League.

Newcastle's spending has been big, but structured and sensible, since they were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. That approach has continued this summer as Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali arrived from AC Milan for £55m and the gifted Harvey Barnes was signed from Leicester City to give width and quality. Emerging young full-back Tino Livramento from Southampton is one for now and the future.

Not sure there will be another top-four finish, but the curve is very much moving in an upward direction as far as long-term prospects are concerned, and they might make an impact in the cups.

8. Tottenham Hotspur
Last season - 8th
The long-running Harry Kane transfer saga has once again provided the backdrop to a Spurs summer, with Ange Postecoglou having arrived from Celtic to take charge of the latest reboot.

If Kane stays, then Spurs can improve on this prediction. If he goes, with Bayern Munich in very public pursuit, then who knows?

Spurs have strengthened with the arrival of England midfield man James Maddison from Leicester City, while keeper Guglielmo Vicario will hope to prove a worthy successor to Hugo Lloris after he joined from Empoli. Micky van de Ven comes with a big reputation as the Netherlands Under-21 defender joins in a £43m deal from Wolfsburg.

Postecoglou will need time and patience after the turbulence of recent seasons but his sides usually make for highly entertaining viewing, which will at least be an improvement.

9. Brighton and Hove Albion
Last season - 6th
Arguably the most entertaining team I watched last season, Brighton were a superb combination of thrilling attacking football and fierce organisation under the charismatic Roberto de Zerbi.

European football was a fitting reward and I expect them to have another good season this time around, although they will miss Alexis Mac Allister, and Moises Caicedo's future hardly seems settled.

Brighton have been busy themselves, bringing in a real attacking talent in Joao Pedro from Watford, while Netherlands Under-21 keeper Bart Verbruggen has arrived from Anderlecht. Brazilian centre back Igor Julio will add to defensive strength following his move from Fiorentina, and James Milner's free transfer signing from Liverpool injects vast experience and know-how.

If Brighton can get a £35m deal for Ajax's Mohammed Kudus over the line, then this will add to their attacking strength.

10. Brentford
Last season - 9th
Brentford will miss main striker Ivan Toney until his return in January from a suspension for breaching Football Association betting rules, but manager Thomas Frank will feel confident he has enough at his disposal given the performances that have made the Bees a credit to the Premier League.

Nathan Collins should be a fine addition in defence following his club record £23m move from Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Frank is also seeking attacking reinforcements, with Nottingham Forest's Brennan Johnson a prime target.

Another season of sound consolidation. The Bees will always be a handful at home.

11. West Ham
Last season - 14th
This might be a little over-optimistic, as the elation of the Europa Conference League win has been diluted by the departure of Declan Rice and renewed doubts over the future of manager David Moyes.

There is still time for the Hammers to put it right, but there is no doubt that there have been dark clouds on the horizon. Moyes is vastly experienced and his first trophy after such a long career was hugely popular within the game, but he is not daft and he will know he needs signings.

Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez looks set to sign for £35m and there are £30m deals in place for Manchester United's Harry Maguire and Southampton's James Ward-Prowse.

12. Crystal Palace
Last season - 11th
There will be one very familiar figure missing from Selhurst Park this season as Wilfried Zaha has finally taken his leave, signing for Galatasaray.

Roy Hodgson's success in steadying the ship, and playing attacking football in the process, earned the 75-year-old another season at the helm. The Eagles, who will be well organised, will miss Michael Olise, absent for the foreseeable future with a hamstring injury, although the exciting Eberechi Eze will provide plenty of flourishes.

Jefferson Lerma adds experience following his arrival from Bournemouth, while the capture of 19-year-old Brazilian forward Matheus Franca from Flamengo in a deal worth £26m will create excitement.

Expect a Hodgson season. Stable, solid, no trouble.

13. Fulham
Last season - 10th
Fulham faded towards the end of last season but still enjoyed an excellent return to the Premier League under manager Marco Silva.

Their place may not be quite so lofty this season, although I don't expect a relegation struggle either.

Much depends on whether they can keep prized striker Aleksandar Mitrovic out of the clutches of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, who are very keen and have already had an offer turned down.

Keep Mitrovic and star midfield man Joao Palhinha fit and available and the Cottagers should have enough for another decent season.

14. Nottingham Forest
Last season - 16th
This is where the trouble starts. A case can be made for any of the following teams to go down, so let's see what we can make of the teams I expect to struggle.

Manager Steve Cooper did superbly to keep Forest in the Premier League after moulding together a whole new squad, helped by a magnificent atmosphere at the City Ground.

It hasn't been quite as hectic this summer - how could it be? - but Forest will be aware suitors are circling the talented forward Brennan Johnson. It will be interesting to see if Antony Elanga can build on the occasional promise he showed at Manchester United prior to his £15m switch.

Cooper can keep Forest up again.

15. Bournemouth
Last season -15th
It was a real surprise when the Cherries sacked Gary O'Neil after he did such a sound job keeping them up, but owner Bill Foley has high ambitions and brought in former Rayo Vallecano coach Andoni Iraola.

Iraola comes with a reputation for exciting football and will be backed, with the headline arrival being that of Justin Kluivert for £10m after his career stalled at Roma. Bournemouth lacked a little cutting edge at times last season and they will hope he provides it.

16. Everton
Last season - 17th
Where to start with a club who have narrowly escaped relegation for the last two seasons, and have yet to show any evidence they have learned the lessons?

Everton have lacked quality back up for injury-plagued striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin for 12 months and they have yet to bring in anyone who looks ready to fill that role, with Leicester City's Patson Daka the latest to be linked.

The scale of Everton's financial mismanagement over recent years means they are scraping around in the bargain basement. The squad is currently smaller than the one that escaped the drop on the final day of last term, although the addition of 38-year-old Ashley Young on a free transfer may be a very smart move.

Everton's expected reset at board level has yet to materialise, along with the long-touted investment from American group MSP Sports Capital.

Three boardroom members left in June but deeply divisive chairman Bill Kenwright remains in post, which continues to be a source of discontent among fans. The 77-year-old has not even felt able to attend a game at Goodison Park since January, citing security concerns.

Manager Sean Dyche's organisational skills may just keep Everton up, although there is also the concern about a hearing in October after the club was referred to an independent commission for an alleged breach of the Premier League's Financial Fair Play rules.

Everton strongly deny any wrongdoing but the prospect of a points deduction lingers if they are found guilty, which will obviously impact this particular prediction.

17. Burnley
Last season - Championship, 1st
There has been lots of talk that the three sides coming up will go straight back down from the Premier League this season, but if one club can defy those predictions, then I am going for Burnley.

They were easily the Championship's standout side last season, winning the title at a canter playing superb football in manager Vincent Kompany's first season at Turf Moor.

Burnley have shown ambition and imagination with the £19m capture of Manchester City keeper James Trafford, the hero of England's Under-21 Euros triumph, and their attempts to steal midfield man Sander Berge away from another of the promoted sides, Sheffield United.

Kompany has revitalised Burnley and there is genuine excitement before Friday's opener at home to champions City.

18. Wolverhampton Wanderers
Last season - 13th
I've got a very, very worrying feeling about Wolves.

Julen Lopetegui did a superb job in keeping them in the Premier League but he has not even made it to the start line this time, leaving amid frustrations at an inability to make the improvements he wanted, a lingering concern from last term.

This is another devastating blow for Wolves, who have shed around £90m worth of talent, including their outstanding midfield player Ruben Neves, without making any significant upgrades as they watch Financial Fair Play rules.

Lopetegui looked their best hope of staying up - now he has gone and Wolves are in crisis.

19. Sheffield United
Last season - Championship, 2nd
Manager Paul Heckingbottom did superbly to take Sheffield United back into the top flight, but it already looks like he will have a job keeping them there. He has been operating on a shoestring budget and is on the verge of losing a second key player, with Sander Berge seemingly heading to Burnley, a team they may well be fighting to stay up.

Striker Iliman Ndiaye scored 14 goals and had 11 assists in the Championship last season but has moved to Marseille, while Berge is near the end of his deal, and his expected departure is a real confidence blow as well as a footballing one.

Heckingbottom will look to make Bramall Lane a fortress, and they will need all the help it can give them.

20. Luton
Last season - Championship, 3rd
What a story this is, even before a ball is kicked. Irrespective of how Luton Town fare in the Premier League, they have come through a nightmare to live a dream, as the first club in English football history to drop from the first tier to the fifth and make it all the way back again.

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards proved a huge embarrassment to their great rivals Watford last season. He was sacked by The Hornets after only 11 games, before moving to Kenilworth Road and masterminding a promotion campaign.

Striker Carlton Morris - who has signed a new contract - will be a significant figure after scoring 20 goals last season, while Edwards also has high hopes for new signing Tahith Chong, with the former Manchester United playing coming in from Birmingham City for £4m.

It is difficult to see Luton surviving, but I would take great pleasure in being proven wrong.

Youssef Chermiti not set to be available for Everton v Fulham as transfer news drops
The deal for Everton to bring Sporting striker Youssef Chermiti to the club is in the final stages, but still depends on some procedural issues, according to O Jogo.

The Portuguese newspaper reported in its print edition [9 August, pg 11] that the 19-year-old is set to undergo medical tests later this week, and is not expected to be available for the Toffees' Premier League opener against Fulham on 12 August.

Initial reports [Record, 8 August] had suggested the deal could have been finalised as early as Tuesday [8 August], but this ultimately turned out not to be the case.

Just get it over the line
There is no doubt that this deal will be finalised in the coming days, with everything agreed between the clubs and the player, but Everton should not count their chickens as you never know at this stage. They will still take their time to get everything 100% concluded before he arrives.

Everton were stung in January when Arnaut Danjuma, who has now joined the club on loan, performed a last-minute U-turn to move to Tottenham. This move will likely always leave a sense of worry in the minds of Everton fans.

Chermiti is set to arrive at Goodison Park this week, and while he may not feature against Fulham, he will be able to spend time adapting and getting to know his new teammates and new surroundings.

A new striker has been the priority at Everton this summer, and Chermiti looks to be the first stepping stone towards achieving their aims, but another striker will still be targeted to bring more experience alongside the unproven teenager.

Fulham and Bournemouth have 'entered the race' for signing – PL duo ready to make €10-12m offer
Fulham and AFC Bournemouth have joined the chase to sign Atalanta's Joakim Mæhle, according to reports from Italy.

The Denmark international's form for his country and club has resulted in an interest from Vfl Wolfsburg, who have made a concrete move to secure his services. That's according to Tutto Atalanta and Gianluca Di Marzio.

Both reports state the German club have made a €8m bid and it was rejected by the Serie A side. Wolfsburg will now have to battle it out with Fulham and Bournemouth as these two clubs have 'entered the race' for the 26-year-old.

They explain that Marco Silva's side and the Cherries are both ready to offer a fee around €10-12m for the wing-back, who can operate on both sides.

Mæhle joined Atalanta from Genk in 2021 and Gian Piero Gasperini sees him as a valuable player in the squad, also because of his versatility.

The Dane's deal expires in 2025, and both Tutto Atalanta and Gianluca Di Marzio question what would Atalanta's reaction be if Fulham and/or Bournemouth were to table a €10-12m bid.

Mæhle managed three goals and three assists from 36 games last season.

Chelsea 'flop' and new Spurs No8 among seven stars who must shine in new season

Our writers name the player each of the capital's will be relying on in 2023-24

The new Premier League season is almost upon us.

The 2023-24 campaign promises to be a big one for the capital's clubs with European campaigns, title challenges and maybe a relegation battle or two to come.

While Arsenal and Chelsea in particular have gone big in the transfer market there are a number of big investments from previous years who will be relied upon to shine over the coming months.

Here, Standard Sport writers pick out the stars who will be most needed to shine in 2023-24...

Declan Rice - Arsenal
There is little doubt that Rice has the character to handle his price tag, but he is under pressure to show why Arsenal paid £105million to sign him from West Ham.

Rice is comfortably the most expensive signing in Arsenal history and Mikel Arteta believes the 24-year-old could be the missing link as the Gunners bid to take the final step in the title race.

He will predominantly play at the base of midfield, but may also be used further forward as a No8, and needs to bring the physicality and drive the Gunners missed last season.

Now Rice has got his big move to a club playing in the Champions League and challenging for major trophies, it is up to the England international to take his game to a new level.

He is already a fan favourite after snubbing interest from Manchester City to move to Emirates Stadium. Shine on the pitch and he could become a legend.

Bryan Mbeumo - Brentford
With top scorer Ivan Toney out until January due to his betting ban, most clubs would be scrambling to sign a replacement. However, Mbeumo has been a regular contributor of goals since joining Brentford in 2019 and will be trusted to be the talisman for the Bees.

Yoane Wissa is set to lead the line in the Toney role, but Mbeumo will be asked to drive the Brentford attack.

Operating largely from the right of the front three, the 24-year-old Frenchman offers speed, skill and a thunderous left foot.

Other players must step up, too. Brentford need consistent output from Wissa, Josh Dasilva and Kevin Schade, the German speedster who has this summer made his loan move from Freiburg permanent for a club-record fee of £22m. But much of their hopes could rest on the shoulders of Mbeumo as they bid to mount another European push.

Mykhailo Mudryk - Chelsea
Just before he snubbed Arsenal to join Chelsea for £88.5m in January, Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi said Mudryk has the potential to win the Ballon d'Or.

There was a lot of hype around the Ukraine star, but he walked into a club in turmoil and endured a difficult first six months at Stamford Bridge.

The task for Mauricio Pochettino is to unleash his undoubted talent.

Mudryk is set to be thrust into a key role for Chelsea on the left wing after Christopher Nkunku suffered a knee injury that could keep him out for four months.

The 22-year-old is playing more as an out-and-out winger under Pochettino and, in his new 4-2-3-1 system with a recognised centre-forward, will have a reference point to work off. Taking the No10 shirt brings an added level of expectation. But Pochettino has a good track record with young players and Mudryk will be hoping he can thrive under his new manager.

Eberechi Eze - Crystal Palace
As a new era begins at Selhurst Park without Wilfried Zaha, there will be added pressure on Eze to step up and deliver as the main man for Palace.

Eze played within himself at times under Patrick Vieira last season, but was revitalised after Roy Hodgson took over, and this feels like a big season for the 25-year-old Londoner.

His England debut against Malta in June should have given him a confidence lift and, with Zaha gone and Michael Olise to miss the start of the season due to injury, he will need to hit the ground running when Palace kick off at Sheffield United on Saturday.

The challenge for Eze is replicating his form at the end of last season throughout an entire campaign.

Hodgson spoke this week about the huge void left by the departure of Zaha. Eze must plug that gap and take over as the Eagles' talisman.

Raul Jimenez - Fulham
Fulham have been quick to stress that Jimenez is not a replacement for wantaway top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose future remains uncertain.

But should the Serb depart, then Marco Silva will turn to £5m summer signing Jimenez to provide a goal threat. The Mexico striker has scored just six Premier League goals since fracturing his skull at Arsenal in November 2020 and all he managed for Wolves last season was three goals in the League Cup.

Fulham will hope he can rediscover his best form under Silva, much like Willian did last season.

If Mitrovic does stay, Fulham could still do with someone to ease some of the goalscoring load on him, as they bid to build on their impressive 10th-place finish last season.

Jimenez scored as Fulham beat Hoffenheim 2-1 in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday. It was his first goal for his new club and his challenge now is to become a top-class Premier League centre-forward again.

Yves Bissouma - Tottenham
Perhaps more than anyone at Tottenham, Bissouma is poised to benefit from the 'Angeball' revolution.

Signed for £25m last summer, Spurs fans had high hopes for Bissouma, but under Antonio Conte he looked a shadow of the midfielder who was such an imposing box-to-box presence at Brighton.

Had Spurs signed a dud or was Bissouma mismanaged by Conte, whose exacting demands on his players are notorious? The hope and belief at Spurs is that it was the latter, and the early signs under Ange Postecoglou are promising.

With Rodrigo Bentancur sidelined until at least September and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's future uncertain, Bissouma is all but certain to start the season in Postecoglou's midfield three, either as the single pivot or a second No8 alongside James Maddison, with licence to get forward.

It is a cliche but, given how little impact he made last season, Bissouma really should be like a new signing for Spurs.

Lucas Paqueta - West Ham
Proof of Paqueta's stunning turnaround in form last season comes with today's news that Manchester City now want to prise him from West Ham.

David Moyes, having already seen Rice depart, will be desperate not to lose another major cog from his midfield. Should Paqueta stay, and with midfield reinforcements yet to arrive, there will be huge pressure on him to hit the ground running this term.

The Brazilian arrived last summer for a club-record fee of more than £50m, but it was a source of major frustration to West Ham fans that by Christmas the only occasions on which he had shown his full quality had come at the World Cup with Brazil. Six months later, though, few were still in any doubt as to the 25-year-old's ability.

No Hammers player finished the season in better form, and his superb pass set up Jarrod Bowen's winner in the Conference League Final.

Fulham: Whites join race for Ismail Jakobs
The Senegal international played at last year's World Cup.

Fulham have joined the race to sign Monaco full-back Ismail Jakobs after manager Marco Silva admitted they need more cover in that area.

Who will Fulham sign?
The Whites have officially confirmed two major summer signings so far, but with time running out, they will need to move for other targets fairly quickly.

Calvin Bassey, after a brilliant season at Ajax last term, has joined Fulham in an £18.2 million deal and his experience will be invaluable - especially after his run to the Europa League final with Rangers in 2022.

Meanwhile, star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is apparently pushing for a move away, with Mexico international striker Raul Jimenez coming in to potentially replace him.

"It's not the ideal situation, I have to tell you. Not because he received an offer, it's the situation about himself," said Silva on Mitrovic last month.

"As you know, he's not going to play tomorrow, he didn't play last Wednesday. He's not working properly with his team mates and when I say this is not the ideal scenario, this is the situation."

Meanwhile, Silva has also admitted that Fulham have a shortage of full-back options, as well as wingers, and the need for a new central midfielder.

"Unfortunately, we need many still. We have some important players injured," he said.

"I hope they can come sooner. We have just two full backs, we need a midfielder too and we have just two wingers so we need another two wingers.

"We have completed our central defenders. I needed these players 15 days or 20 days ago, not now."

After Silva's admission on their full-back shortage, The Daily Mail now claim that they have joined the race for Senegal international wing-back Jakobs.

The Mail relay this does come after Silva addressed the need for a new full-back, with Fulham now holding a keen interest in the 23-year-old.

Forest are another top flight side to have been targeting Jakobs but the Whites are now also contending for the African's signature.

Jakobs, who featured at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar last year, has long been admired by Fulham, even as far back as his Cologne days before he joined Monaco.

Antonee Robinson is Fulham's only available left-back option right now, so the defender would come in to shore up that weakened position.

Jakobs, a highly versatile player, is also capable of being deployed further up the left flank in another incentive to move.

Who is Ismail Jakobs?
The full-back signed for Monaco from Cologne in 2021, where he has gone on to make 80 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side.

Jakobs has racked up eight assists in that time, adding to his tally of four goals and four assists in in 47 appearances whilst he was at Cologne (Transfermarkt).

However, one thing Silva may want to watch out for is his disciplinary record, as former Monaco manager Phillippe Clement dropped Jakobs for that reason last campaign.

"Jakobs was fined for something that will remain internal," said the Belgian.

"It's clear that it wasn't good. He understood that. It's done, but he won't be part of the squad [against Toulouse]."

Fulham close to signing 22-year-old Chelsea attacker
Fulham are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign Callum Hudson-Odoi.

That's according to a recent report from Sky Sports News, who claim there is a 'growing optimism' that an agreement between the two London clubs can be reached within the next day or two.

After spending last season out on loan with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and struggling to continue his development, there is hope a move to a Premier League rival this summer could be the change of scenery the 22-year-old needs in order to get his career back on track.

Although a fee has not been reported, with the London-born winger currently valued at a modest £15 million (TM), Fulham's risk vs. reward is likely to outweigh any financial elements to the potential deal.

Should the Blues' academy graduate complete a switch to Craven Cottage, he will become Marco Silva's third summer signing after Calvin Bassey joined from Rangers and Raul Jimenez completed a move from Wolves.

Everton ace Dele Alli suffers fresh injury setback after surgery
Dele Alli has suffered a fresh injury setback as he looks to return to the Everton fold after undergoing hip surgery, according to The Daily Mail.
The newspaper reported on its website on 9 August that the midfielder has been forced to ease off his current training schedule to further delay his return to first-team action.

It said the 27-year-old's recovery from a hip operation earlier in the summer is going "slower than hoped" and that the Toffees are taking a cautious approach in rushing him back to fitness.

Disappointing
It will no doubt be disappointing for Everton fans to hear Alli is set for a longer spell on the sidelines than the club had originally expected following his surgery.

The Toffees have really rallied around the midfielder since he opened up on 13 July in an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap YouTube channel about his tough childhood, sexual abuse and his addiction to sleeping pills.

The supporters will be looking to show their support for him when he finally takes to the Goodison Park pitch again after spending last season out on loan at Turkish side Besiktas.

His time on Merseyside hasn't been great so far after failing to score or register an assist in his 13 games for the club since joining from Tottenham last year.

But he is determined to get back up to full fitness to prove that he can still play at Premier League level and be an important player for Everton moving forwards.

Fulham 2023/24 season preview: Key players, summer transfers, squad numbers & predictions

Fulham exceeded expectations under Marco Silva last season
The Portuguese boss resisted an eyewatering £40m offer from the Saudi Pro League
Aleksandar Mitrovic linked with exit but Joao Palhinha likely to stay despite interest

Fulham are hoping to avoid second season syndrome / Matt Burt | 90min

The emerging Saudi frontier has gone a long way to disrupting Fulham's preparations for the new season.
First, Al Ahli tried to pinch manager Marco Silva, and Al Hilal have attempted to prise last season's leading scorer, Aleksandar Mitrovic, away from Craven Cottage. The Serbian forward is set to be keen on leaving the Cottagers this summer, and his absence will be hard felt should he get his wish.

Silva's side massively exceeded expectations last time out after yo-yoing between the top two divisions for several years. However, does the Portuguese manager have the tools to build on an impressive 2022/23?

Here's 90min's preview of Fulham's upcoming campaign.

Fulham's performance last five seasons

Paulo Gazzaniga (GK) - Girona - free

Shane Duffy (DF) - Norwich - free
Neeskens Kebano (FW) - Al Jazira - free
    Steven Sessegnon (DF) - released

Key players
Star player

He's bound to miss a few games due to yellow card accumulation, but Joao Palhinha has a massive role to play for Fulham in 2023/24.

The Portuguese international proved quite the coup for the Cottagers last summer as he slotted seamlessly into Silva's midfield pivot and formed a balanced partnership with Harrison Reed. Palhinha emerged as the Premier League's most prolific tackler, with his astute reading of the game so often coming to the fore to stabilise his side defensively.

Fulham's lofty price tag deterred suitors this summer and depicted just how significant the 28-year-old is to the Cottagers' chances of a successful 2023/24 season.

One to watch
Mitrovic may not yet depart, but the club's move for Wolves' Raul Jimenez would suggest there's still a chance their leading scorer from last season leaves the club.

His exit would be a massive blow and would thrust a ton of responsibility onto Jimenez and former Tottenham man Carlos Vinicius.

The Mexican forward was once a productive Premier League outlet, but he's never found his most potent form since returning to action after suffering a skull fracture in November 2020. Nevertheless, this is a new chapter for Jimenez, and he looked bright in pre-season. Could we see a renaissance in west London?

Away kit

Premier League prediction
Much of this prediction depends on the future of Mitrovic. Should the Serb stay, Fulham are on course to enjoy a campaign similar to 2022/23 given that those in the bottom half of the table haven't considerably strengthened this summer.

However, the Cottagers risk getting dragged into the relegation dogfight should they be reliant on Jimenez and Vinicius for goals. Mitro looked a sure bet to depart a few weeks ago, but there's growing confidence in Fulham quarters that their leading man will remain at the club.

If that's the case - even if he's disgruntled - Silva's side could enjoy another stress-free top flight season.

The Rangers mega flop with Servette insider knowledge is desperate for Swiss win at all costs

Kevin Mbabu was one of five players sent to Ibrox on loan from Newcastle eight years ago and he was with the Swiss side last season.

Kevin Mbabu didn't play a single game or even make it on the bench for Rangers during an ill-fated loan spell at Ibrox as one of the infamous Newcastle United Five loanees.

But the full back has given his verdict ahead of the battle of two of his former clubs in the Champions League and the Swiss defender admits "I hope Servette will eliminate Rangers, no matter how!"

Mbabu was one of the Magpies quintet sent to Govan along with Haris Vuckic, Remie Streete, Gael Bigirimana and Shane Ferguson at a time when former St James' Park owner Mike Ashley had an interest in Rangers. Then Rangers caretaker Kenny McDowall claimed he was ORDERED to play the job lot recruits but on Vuckic made any sort of impact in Glasgow and Mbabu was one of two players who made NO appearances, along with Gael Bigirimana, who later played for Motherwell and Hibs.

But after returning to Newcastle United he then moved back to his Swiss homeland where he joined Young Boys and from there earned an £8 million move to Wolfsburg and then returned to the English Premier League with Fulham. However, he was sent on loan from Craven Cottage last season to Servette.

And he's been looking ahead to the Euro clash at Ibrox, with some advice for his old team-mates. The 28-year-old said: "Ibrox is very impressive. The fans in Glasgow are very, very hot. It starts from the warm-up, it continues during the match of course. There is this idea of intimidating the opponent, of whistling him, of provoking him too. Everything is applauded, a tackle, a corner, a muscular intervention. Servette will discover a cauldron and in this cauldron, Servette will have to keep a cool head.

"You have to be ready to enter into duels with the Scots who play with a lot of intensity. You have to dare step on their toes. Containing the commitment of Rangers will dampen their enthusiasm.. You have to dare to step on their toes, if I may say so.

"Containing the commitment of Rangers will dampen the enthusiasm of the supporters. Servette shouldn't play in too low a block so as not to invite pressure and suffer immediately. That will give confidence to Rangers.

"Can Servette win? They were not favourites against Genk and progressed even with 10 men. Bedia on fire, a Timo Cognat is shining in the middle and Derek Kutesa who can make the difference. But watch out for James Tavernier, he's a very strong, very offensive right-back. I hope Servette will eliminate Rangers, no matter how!"

Exclusive: Fulham spy cut-price deal for former Barcelona defender Juan Miranda to tick off Marco Silva priority

Real Betis defender Juan Miranda is a target for Fulham

Fulham are eyeing a move for Real Betis defender Juan Miranda as they look to bolster their full-back options, TEAMtalk understands.
Craven Cottage boss Marco Silva has made reinforcements at full-back one of his top priorities before the close of the transfer window.

Antonee Robinson, who recently signed a long-term contract extension, is Fulham's only recognised left-back following the departure of Joe Bryan earlier this summer when his contract expired, paving the way for him to join Millwall. Subsequently, Silva wants to add cover and competition on the left side of his defence.

Miranda has caught the attention of Silva after impressing at Real Betis over the past couple of seasons and he is also capable of playing further up the left flank.

The 23-year-old re-joined Betis from Barcelona on a permanent basis in the summer of 2021 after being on loan there since October 2020. In 79 appearances for Los Verdiblancos, he has scored six goals and provided nine assists.

Miranda is entering the final year of his contract at Betis – whose academy he developed in before moving to Barcelona – and Fulham hope they could maybe land the defender for a cut-price fee due to his situation.

They would be providing him with his first taste of Premier League action, although he has ventured outside his native country before to represent German side Schalke on loan from Barcelona in the 2019-20 season.

He also has one cap to his name at international level for Spain, in which he scored.

Fulham 'expect to sign Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi this week'
Fulham reportedly expect to complete the signing of Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi later this week.

The Blues academy graduate has been back at Stamford Bridge ever since Bayer Leverkusen opted against taking up the option of a permanent deal after his loan spell in Germany during 2022-23.

However, despite the possibility of a fresh start under Mauricio Pochettino, the 22-year-old has never been considered as a part of the Argentine's plans.

Hudson-Odoi has spent pre-season training at Cobham and representing the Under-21s in friendlies in order to keep his fitness ticking over ahead of a move.

If reports are to be believed, Hudson-Odoi has not been short of admirers with the likes of Nottingham Forest and Lazio having considered approaches for the playmaker.

Nevertheless, for a number of weeks, Fulham have been deemed to be the frontrunners, Hudson-Odoi seemingly having the chance to move just down the road to Craven Cottage.

According to Sky Sports News, there is optimism from all parties that a deal can be finalised within the next 48 hours.

As it stands, it appears touch and go whether Fulham will be able to secure Hudson-Odoi's services before their Premier League opener with Everton on Saturday.

A transfer would need to be registered with the league by midday on Friday, yet it appears that a move to Marco Silva's side is now a foregone conclusion.

Despite Calvin Bassey and Raul Jimenez having been signed by Fulham, it has been a largely negative summer for the Cottagers, partly due to Aleksandar Mitrovic pushing for a transfer to Saudi Arabia.

Willian, who only recently penned a fresh contract, is also allegedly keen to move to the Middle East, which would add to Fulham seeing another winger in Manor Solomon move to Tottenham Hotspur after his loan stint from Shakhtar Donetsk came to an end.

With Ivan Cavaleiro also expected to depart the club, Hudson-Odoi could, theoretically, become a first-choice pick as soon as he completes his move.

Hudson-Odoi will leave Chelsea having contributed 16 goals and 22 assists from his 126 appearances in all competitions.

Fulham: Sky Sports reporter drops big update on Hudson-Odoi
Fulham will want to build on an impressive first season back in the Premier League by bringing in reinforcements.

Fulham have been linked with a move to sign Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has revealed the one reason stopping a deal from being completed at the moment, while speaking to GIVEMESPORT.

The Cottagers won't want to rest on their laurels after a top half Premier League finish last season.

Fulham transfer news - Latest
So far this summer, Fulham have completed the signings of Calvin Bassey and Raul Jimenez, whilst also managing to keep hold of some of their prized assets, for now.

As per the MailOnline, striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, with the Serbian forward reportedly vowing never to play for Marco Silva's side again.

The report carries quotes from Silva, who has revealed that Mitrovic is back training with the team.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently claimed that Willian has agreed personal terms with Al Shabab, despite signing a new deal at Craven Cottage.

If Fulham can manage to keep hold of two of their star players whilst also continuing to strengthen, Silva will feel he's in a strong place heading into the new season.

As per the Evening Standard, Hudson-Odoi could be the next to arrive at Fulham, with the 22-year-old now actively pushing for a move to be completed.

Now, Sky Sports reporter Sheth has provided an update on the potential deal.

What has Dharmesh Sheth said about Fulham and Hudson-Odoi?
Sheth has suggested that Fulham are edging closer to securing the signature of Hudson-Odoi.

The Sky Sports reporter adds that there is a gap in valuation between the two clubs, but a lot of the deal has been agreed in principle.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "One player we talked about before, Fred, but another player that they're edging closer to signing is Hudson-Odoi as well, from Chelsea. Talks are continuing.

"Still a gap in valuation on the fee, but a lot of that deal, I'm told, has been agreed in principle. Personal terms not expected to be a problem. It's just that all important fee now.

"He's entered the final year of his contract, hence why Fulham probably want to pay a little bit less. I think there's a willingness from all parties to get the deal done, it's just whether they can close that gap on the fee."

Who else could Fulham look to target this summer?
Reliable journalist Romano has also claimed that Fulham have agreed personal terms with Everton winger Demarai Gray.

The Jamaican international is currently training away from Sean Dyche's first team squad.

Italian reporter Rudy Galetti has recently revealed to GIVEMESPORT that Fulham have begun talks to sign Manchester United midfielder Fred, who will leave Old Trafford this summer.

Journalist Jones has confirmed to GMS that Benfica defender Morato is also keen on signing for Fulham during the summer transfer window.

The capital club gets their Premier League season underway this weekend as they travel to Merseyside to face Everton at Goodison Park.

Fulham mulling Miranda move
Fulham are considering a late move for Real Betis full back Juan Miranda as seek left back cover for Antonee Robinson, according to Teamtalk.

The Whites are short of competition for their American international, who agreed a new five-year deal to stay in SW6 this summer, after Joe Bryan left Craven Cottage at the end of his contract. Teamtalk claims that Cottagers' head coach Marco Silva is an admirer of former Barcelona full back Miranda, who has made 79 appearances and six goals since returning to Betis in October 2020 – initially on loan.

The 23 year-old, who became his footballing education in the Betis cantera, is now in the final year of his current deal at Estadio Benito Villamarin, is believed to be interested in the prospect of playing in the Premier League but it remains to be whether Fulham would be able to acquire the Spanish international for a cut-price fee.

Tottenham now reportedly want to sign £50m striker who once said he wanted them to win the Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a move to sign Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic should Harry Kane leave this summer.

That's according to 90 Min, with the outlet sharing Spurs' list of potential replacements for their all-time top goalscorer.

The list includes the likes of Lille forward Jonathan David, Gent's Gift Orban and Montpellier's Elye Wahi.

Tottenham are expected to target a younger forward player should Kane complete a switch to Bayern Munich this summer, but it seems they are considering a more experienced option in Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Of course, Kane's future remains up in the air but is expected to be resolved before the Premier League gets underway this weekend.

And if Spurs were to replace their all-time top goalscorer with Mitrovic, they'd be getting a player who has publicly backed them to win the Premier League in the past.

Mitrovic wanted Tottenham to win the Premier League
Speaking to Serbian outlet Novosti back in March 2016, Mitrovic admitted to wanting Tottenham to win the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino.

"Honestly, I want Tottenham to win the title," he said.

"I like the principle of pushing their young players, and the coach Pochettino is excellent."

Of course, Tottenham eventually fell short during the 2015-16 campaign as Leicester City went on to lift the title.

But there was a lot to admire about Pochettino's Spurs side during that period and they even pushed for the crown once again the following season.

Mitrovic made a huge impact for Fulham last season as he played a key role in helping Marco Silva's men establish their Premier League status.

The 28-year-old netted 14 goals in 24 league appearances but spent a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being banned for violent conduct.

The Serbian striker would certainly provide goals at Spurs and has proven to be a real threat for Fulham. But Tottenham seem to be heading in a different direction under Postecoglou and are more likely to target a younger forward should Kane depart.

Fulham are also expected to demand around £50 million for the striker and it's difficult to see Spurs matching this price tag.

Tottenham keen on Aleksandar Mitrovic
Tottenham Hotspur are interested in acquiring the services of the 28-year-old Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

According to 90min, Tottenham Hotspur are keen on having Aleksandar Mitrovic in their ranks. The 28-year-old has been a consistent performer for Fulham over the years and his performances have attracted the attention of the London club who are looking to further bolster their attack.

Spurs' major headache throughout the summer has been the future of Harry Kane. The England international has been subject to a lot of interest from Bayern Munich. The German giants have been keen on having him in their ranks for a while now.

They have been in talks with the London club over the past few weeks and have already submitted multiple bids. Despite their efforts, Spurs are in no mood to sell Kane whose contract runs out next summer. Bayern will place a fourth bid worth £94.6 million (€110 million) in the coming days for the 30-year-old but even that is likely to be rejected.

Even with Kane likely to continue at Spurs, the club are pushing hard to sign new strikers. They have already added Argentine youth international Alejo Veliz to their ranks and are still looking for another forward.

One of the names on Tottenham's list is that of Aleksandar Mitrovic. The 28-year-old is looking to part ways with the Cottagers in the ongoing window. Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal were interested in his services and made moves to sign him earlier in the window. But, they failed to meet the demands of Fulham who wanted £50 million for the Serbian international.

Mitrovic joined Fulham back in 2018 and he has been the mainstay of their attack ever since. While he still has three years left on his deal with the club, the 28-year-old is looking for a new challenge elsewhere.

Last season he featured in 24 Premier League matches and ended up scoring 14 goals. The Serbian international has all the qualities and experience needed to succeed at Tottenham. But, it will be interesting to see if Spurs can meet the demands of the Cottagers for their talisman.

Games for the weekend 12/08
We get to kick-off the new season with an away trip to Goodison Park to take on Everton
I'm writing this on Wednesday so "in theory" we could have some new team members, or lost some of the current squad?, however I'm going to assume that the squad is "as is" at least until after the weekend.
Callum Hudson-Odoi saga has been ongoing, "rumour" has it that we're haggling with Chelsea over the fee although "personal terms" have been agreed, it would be good to get him before Saturday.
Demarai Gray, is another that appears to be very close, I don't believe that Everton would release him before we play them this weekend, so perhaps he could sign next week?
Fred is another one that has re-emerged, apparently we were put off by the initial asking price, I'm not sure what's changed but the rumours about him joining Fulham have remerged.

As for players leaving, Tosin "wants" to go to Monaco, not Spurs, I'd imagine that we'd get a better price from Spurs?
West Ham, Liverpool, Uncle Tom Cobley and all have been quoted as being interested in Palhinha, West Ham got really upset with our valuation (£90 million) and effectively wanted to swap him for some of last seasons unwanted track suits. Surprisingly Liverpool didn't sound too put off by the price but his shoulder injury in the Stateside friendly games looks as if any interested has stopped for now?
Willian has also been offered the chance to play in Saudi, what puzzles me is why didn't they "go for him" before he signed for Fulham?
Mitro, hmmm, Mitro, I find it hard to believe that Mitro said he'd never play for Fulham again, he has anyway even if it was a sub' appearance in the pre-season friendly against Hoffenheim. I can believe he wants to earn £20 million a year, who wouldn't? but would he really want to risk playing for his country and building on the number of goals he's scored?
With both the Willian, Mitro & Palhinha offers it makes a very refreshing change for the club to "stand their ground" and not appear to give in straight away, we may well still loose one or more of these players before the transfer window closes but for now their still our players.

Our two new boys, Raúl and Calvin Bassey, both scored in the Hoffenheim game, I wonder if two new signings have scored for Fulham on their debuts?

Everton struggled for most of last season, appointing Sean Dyche will have his work cut out if they don't want to battle against relegation for a third season in a row?
They've also, at tie of writing, only signed two players, Arnaut Danjuma, a forward signed on loan from Villarreal and Ashley Young on a free transfer from Villa.

Our record against Everton isn't that good, especially at Goodison, we've 5 wins, 11 losses and 3 draws, having said that we've won the last 2 at their place.

I don't think that Palhinha, Pereira or Ream will be fit enough to be starters, therefor my team for the season opener (assuming no new players or further departures) would be...
