Silva: 'The best team won'
Marco Silva felt Fulham were fully deserving of their League Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage this evening – even if they had to secure a spot in the third round draw on penalties.

The Fulham head coach praised his side's attacking approach, which saw Spurs pressed back from the outset, and their character to respond after conceding an equaliser whilst Kenny Tete was off the pitch trying to find a new boot.

He told his post-match press conference:

"The best team won. What's clear is from the first minute we were on the front foot. That was the plan and the players executed it. We pressed them really high and didn't let them set. That was one of the keys for us throughout the game to give us the confidence we needed. During the 97 minutes we were the team with more chances to score, we played better and it was deserved.

Silva also insisted that the Whites would learn lessons from Tete's dash to the dressing room which left the hosts at a numerical disadvantage.

In the future we are going to approach this in a different way because we gave the opposition an opportunity against 10 men for two or three minutes. It is the first and last time that this is going to happen to us. The referee should do what he did, which is to let the game go on, but we need to approach it in a different way.

Now the players know what they should do in that moment. It was not the best and we are going to talk about it more because we have conceded a goal, but even if we had not, with more maturity we will do it in a different way."

Richarlison scored his first Tottenham goal since April

Richarlison scored but could not prevent Tottenham going out of the Carabao Cup as Fulham won a penalty shootout to progress to round three.

After a Micky van de Ven first-half own goal gave Fulham a deserved lead, Spurs levelled in unusual circumstances.

The home side were temporarily reduced to 10 men when Kenny Tete had to change his boot and Spurs took full advantage when Richarlison headed in.

But Davinson Sanchez's penalty was saved as Fulham won the shootout.

It was Tete - with a new boot on - who scored the decisive spot-kick to send the home side through.

It was ultimately a deserved win for Fulham, who should perhaps have been out of sight before Richarlison levelled with his first goal of the season after the hosts dominated the first half against a sluggish Spurs side.

Fraser Forster made an excellent save just before the break to deny Rodrigo Muniz, who also had a couple of decent chances before then.

Tottenham improved after the break and Manor Solomon almost got a dream winner against his former side late on, but his curled effort from the edge of the box was saved.

Substitute James Maddison also hit a free-kick into the wall but penalties were needed to settle the tie, with Fulham successfully converting all of theirs to send Spurs out.

It was overall a very encouraging performance by Fulham, whose manager Marco Silva had to watch the game from the stands after picking up three yellow cards in the first three Premier League games of the season.

Richarlison relief as he gets off the mark
Tottenham have had a good start to the season in the Premier League with an opening-day draw followed by back-to-back wins against Manchester United and Bournemouth.

Consequently, this EFL Cup match offered Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou the chance to rotate his squad and give others the opportunity to impress.

Richarlison was one of just two players - along with Van de Ven - to retain his place in the side from the 2-0 win against Bournemouth, and this was a chance for the Brazilian to finally get off the mark for the season as he looks to fill the void left by Harry Kane's departure.

It looked like another opportunity would pass him by as he was largely anonymous in the first half, having one shot of note that was easily blocked by the Fulham defence.

But he showed his predatory instincts to nod home a fine cross from Ivan Perisic and, despite this defeat, Postecoglou will hope this will give him the confidence to kick on and start scoring in the Premier League.

'One of the best midfielders in PL': Liverpool tipped to secure transfer of 'perfect' player
Clinton Morrison has urged Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool to secure the transfer of Fulham midfielder, Joao Palhinha.

The former striker thinks that Joao Palhinha is 'one of the best holding midfielders' in the Premier League and he is a player who would be 'perfect' for Liverpool.

Only a few days remain before the 2023 summer transfer window slams shut and the feeling among Liverpool fans is that they are still short of quality.

That's why Morrison thinks that they should push for Palhinha's talents, even if 'Fulham fans won't like me saying it', as he told Sky Sports News (28/08/23).

It seems as though any midfielder, who is a transfer target in the Premier League, is worth £100 million, or around that mark, nowadays.

And you would imagine Fulham, who have already lost Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer, would probably demand a seriously high transfer fee for their star midfielder, with Morrison sharing his thoughts.

"I know Fulham fans won't like me saying this," said Morrison. "But I don't understand why Liverpool don't get him. There is the perfect midfielder that you want, who knows the league inside and out.

"I think he is outstanding and he is one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League."

Important days ahead for Liverpool
Liverpool fans will be hoping their stunning comeback win against Newcastle United on Sunday isn't ruined by these final days of the 2023 summer transfer window.

From incoming and outgoings, they need to ensure that a certain Mohamed Salah doesn't leave, whilst also bringing in that added quality.

If they can do that, then perhaps, they can be the ones to challenge Pep Guardiola's all-dominant Manchester City for the Premier League title.
