Fulham 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Fulham win 5-3 on penalties

Richarlison scored his first Tottenham goal since April

Richarlison scored but could not prevent Tottenham going out of the Carabao Cup as Fulham won a penalty shootout to progress to round three.

After a Micky van de Ven first-half own goal gave Fulham a deserved lead, Spurs levelled in unusual circumstances.

The home side were temporarily reduced to 10 men when Kenny Tete had to change his boot and Spurs took full advantage when Richarlison headed in.

But Davinson Sanchez's penalty was saved as Fulham won the shootout.

It was Tete - with a new boot on - who scored the decisive spot-kick to send the home side through.

It was ultimately a deserved win for Fulham, who should perhaps have been out of sight before Richarlison levelled with his first goal of the season after the hosts dominated the first half against a sluggish Spurs side.

Fraser Forster made an excellent save just before the break to deny Rodrigo Muniz, who also had a couple of decent chances before then.

Tottenham improved after the break and Manor Solomon almost got a dream winner against his former side late on, but his curled effort from the edge of the box was saved.

Substitute James Maddison also hit a free-kick into the wall but penalties were needed to settle the tie, with Fulham successfully converting all of theirs to send Spurs out.

It was overall a very encouraging performance by Fulham, whose manager Marco Silva had to watch the game from the stands after picking up three yellow cards in the first three Premier League games of the season.

Richarlison relief as he gets off the mark
Tottenham have had a good start to the season in the Premier League with an opening-day draw followed by back-to-back wins against Manchester United and Bournemouth.

Consequently, this EFL Cup match offered Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou the chance to rotate his squad and give others the opportunity to impress.

Richarlison was one of just two players - along with Van de Ven - to retain his place in the side from the 2-0 win against Bournemouth, and this was a chance for the Brazilian to finally get off the mark for the season as he looks to fill the void left by Harry Kane's departure.

It looked like another opportunity would pass him by as he was largely anonymous in the first half, having one shot of note that was easily blocked by the Fulham defence.

But he showed his predatory instincts to nod home a fine cross from Ivan Perisic and, despite this defeat, Postecoglou will hope this will give him the confidence to kick on and start scoring in the Premier League.

Fulham 1-1 Spurs (5-3 Pens)

Fulham secured a ticket to round three of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night after a flawless penalty shootout.

An own-goal from Micky van de Ven got the Whites ahead before Richarlison made it level in normal time.

In the resulting shootout, Davinson Sanchez was the only one not to tuck his spot-kick away after a smart Marek Rodák save, and Fulham were victorious.

Marco Silva freshened things up for the Cup team-wise, giving Adama Traoré his first Fulham start, as well as rare minutes for Rodák and Rodrigo Muniz. Harrison Reed also came back into midfield alongside Tom Cairney, who captained the side.

The slick surface meant every touch was tested by both sides, which João Palhinha almost capitalised on straight away. Combined with Cairney, he nabbed the ball back high up field to give Muniz a sniff of a chance, but he couldn't quite get the ball under his spell.

Moments later and there was some quality down our left flank from Antonee Robinson. Intercepting a loose Spurs ball, our left-back glided past Manor Solomon and Sanchez, before scooping a lovely ball into the back post. Muniz was there, but couldn't quite direct his header on target.

Fulham had their tails up and weren't giving Spurs a chance to breathe. Fraser Forster was lucky to not see the ball canon into his own net after being chased down by a spritely Reed, who epitomised the Whites' early energy with the press.

The early work paid off with just under 20 minutes gone. Cairney, who had been lively all game, took Sanchez for a spin down the left before firing in a low cross, which van de Ven diverted into his own net.

Tottenham did work their way in to the contest slightly after going behind, but weren't having much in the way of clear cut chances still. With 10 minutes remaining of the first period Giovani Lo Celso picked out Richarlison down the right, but the Brazilian forward's effort didn't trouble Rodák.

With the clock ticking down for half-time Fulham went close to doubling the advantage. Kenny Tete's ball from the right was pinpoint for the head of Muniz, whose nod down had to be saved smartly by Forster.

The rain followed the teams out for the second half with Fulham a goal to the good. Richarlison attempted to turn it around quickly for his side and almost saw his effort loop into the net after taking a big nick off Tim Ream, but Rodák was alert to parry.

A highly bizarre and unfortunate set of events came next ending with a Spurs equaliser. After a challenge with an opposition man, the boot of Tete appeared to be broken, and thus our right-back sprinted down the tunnel to fetch a new pair, reducing Fulham to 10 men in the meantime. Tottenham took this opportunity to attack down their left, and Perisic's ball over was headed in by Richarlison to equalise.

With half an hour to go a massive chance presented itself for Fulham to regain the lead. After Cairney won it back, substitute Harry Wilson raced through the middle before squaring to Bobby De Cordova-Reid. But at the crucial moment winding up the shot, our forward man seemed to slip and stretch and his shot went wide as a result.

Wilson was involved again moments later as the Whites went close. Some lovely link-up between him and Cairney got our Welshman in on goal, but he was ultimately denied from close as he attempted to poke the ball under Forster.

Up the other end Solomon got into his favoured position on the left before doing his trademark cut inside to curl one with his right. Fulham fans would've been having flashbacks to seeing it last season, but luckily this time Rodák was there to deny him.

Wilson was denied again with a minute left of proceedings after Luke Harris had spread the play out to him down the right. Our winger tried his best to poke it past the Spurs 'keeper, but yet another stern stop kept him out.

97 minutes wasn't enough to decide the outcome, and so the contest was to be settled by penalties.

A flawless first five penalties from Andreas Pereira, Son Heung-Min, Raúl Jiménez, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson got things off to a solid start, before Sanchez had his penalty saved.

João Palhinha put the pressure on James Maddison who tucked his spot-kick away, before Tete slammed his one home to win Fulham the match and send us to the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Timothy Castagne swaps Leicester for Fulham in new long-term deal
Fulham has confirmed the acquisition of Timothy Castagne from Leicester City.

Castagne's contract stretches until the summer of 2027, with an option to extend by an additional year. Fans can expect to see him donning the number 21 shirt in the upcoming matches.

Expressing his relief and enthusiasm on joining Fulham, Castagne shared with FFCtv: "I feel very good. It's been a long transfer window, but finally I'm here, and I'm happy to be here. It's a big relief. I've talked to the manager and I just can't wait to start training and playing."

Fulham's Tony Khan extended a warm welcome to the Belgian full-back, stating: "I'm excited to welcome Timothy Castagne to Fulham! He's a versatile and very talented defender with great experience in the Premier League and international competition for Belgium. I'm pleased that Timothy has committed to a four-year contract with us, and we believe that he'll be an excellent addition to Marco's squad! Come on Fulham!"

The 27-year-old's football journey has seen him ascend steadily through the ranks.

His breakthrough came at Genk when he made his debut at 18, chalking up 27 appearances in his debut season.

The following year saw him assist the team in clinching a fifth-place finish in the Belgian top flight and a memorable run to the Europa League Quarter-Finals in 2016/17.

Castagne's exploits in Belgium were enough to turn heads in Italy, with Serie A's Atalanta acquiring him for a €6m deal.

In Italy, he shined further, making significant contributions in Atalanta's third-place league finishes and a foray into the Champions League knockout stages in 2020.

His time at Atalanta was marked with eight goals and 10 assists in 96 appearances.

Leicester City was the next team to secure Castagne's services, reportedly parting with €25m.

His tenure with the Foxes saw him score on his Premier League debut, contribute to an FA Cup victory, and feature in a Europa Conference League Semi-Final.

Castagne's stats at Leicester saw him score five goals and eight assists in 112 matches.

Internationally, Castagne's reputation has grown steadily.

After representing Belgium at various youth levels, he earned his senior debut in 2018 and has since graced the pitch at significant tournaments like the 2020 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup.

To date, he boasts 33 international caps and two goals for the Belgian national team.

Fulham eyeing Alex Iwobi swoop
Fulham are eyeing a late summer raid for Everton star Alex Iwobi.

According to Daily Mail, Premier League side Fulham are eyeing a late summer swoop for Everton star Alex Iwobi before the transfer window slams shut in the coming days.

The Cottagers enjoyed a brilliant 2022/23 campaign back in the top flight and are keen to build on their success this campaign. The loss of star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to Al-Hilal has left them short in attack. So Fulham are keen to address it before the summer window slams shut.

Iwobi has emerged as an option and could be available for a move. The Toffees brought in Arnaut Danjuma (On loan) and Jack Harrison this summer, meaning the 27-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park. Sean Dyche should sanction an exit for the former Arsenal star should he be deemed surplus to requirements.

The 27-year-old Nigerian is a versatile attacker capable of donning multiple hats. He can do a job out wide on either flank and also serve as an attacking midfielder if needed. While his time at Everton has not really set pulses racing, he could rekindle the old flame in the right system.

Marco Silva will be familiar with Iwobi, having briefly managed him in the final months of his Everton tenure. He should be aware of what the Nigerian brings to the table. A solid crosser who can retain the ball well, Iwobi would be a solid addition to the Fulham roster.

He will not just offer them more attacking impetus but also enough strength in depth to sustain a season long campaign. Everton are a team on the decline and look set for another relegation dogfight. Iwobi appears to have reached the end of the road at Goodison Park and a new challenge could be the tonic for the 27-year-old.

Fulham harbour ambitions and could help him achieve that. However, Everton need all the help they can get in what should be another long and hard season. Whether that will be with Iwobi on the roster remains to be seen.

'One of the best midfielders in PL': Liverpool tipped to secure transfer of 'perfect' player
Clinton Morrison has urged Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool to secure the transfer of Fulham midfielder, Joao Palhinha.

The former striker thinks that Joao Palhinha is 'one of the best holding midfielders' in the Premier League and he is a player who would be 'perfect' for Liverpool.

Only a few days remain before the 2023 summer transfer window slams shut and the feeling among Liverpool fans is that they are still short of quality.

That's why Morrison thinks that they should push for Palhinha's talents, even if 'Fulham fans won't like me saying it', as he told Sky Sports News (28/08/23).

It seems as though any midfielder, who is a transfer target in the Premier League, is worth £100 million, or around that mark, nowadays.

And you would imagine Fulham, who have already lost Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer, would probably demand a seriously high transfer fee for their star midfielder, with Morrison sharing his thoughts.

"I know Fulham fans won't like me saying this," said Morrison. "But I don't understand why Liverpool don't get him. There is the perfect midfielder that you want, who knows the league inside and out.

"I think he is outstanding and he is one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League."

Important days ahead for Liverpool
Liverpool fans will be hoping their stunning comeback win against Newcastle United on Sunday isn't ruined by these final days of the 2023 summer transfer window.

From incoming and outgoings, they need to ensure that a certain Mohamed Salah doesn't leave, whilst also bringing in that added quality.

If they can do that, then perhaps, they can be the ones to challenge Pep Guardiola's all-dominant Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Lucas Ocampos set to join Fulham from Sevilla
Sevilla are on the verge of selling one of their star players, according to MD. Lucas Ocampos is reportedly set to join English club Fulham.

After the recent transfer of goalkeeper Bono, the team's defensive strength has been shaken and with just three days left in the transfer window, Sevilla are ready to sell one of their key attacking players. Ocampos is set to leave for a fee of around €15m, pending a few final details to be sorted out between Sevilla and Fulham.

The deal could be finalised within hours, subject to the player's agreement. Sevilla are also in negotiations with Barcelona as they see exciting talent Ez Abde as the potential replacement for the Argentinian. The player has various clubs interested in his signature, including in the Middle East.

Fulham beat Spurs on penalties in Carabao Cup
Fulham progressed the third round of the Carabao Cup after beating Tottenham 5-3 on penalties at Craven Cottage.

With the scores locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, in a game largely dominated by the home side, Marek Rodak's save from Davinson Sanchez's spot-kick proved decisive, with Andreas Pereira, Raul Jimenez, Harry Wilson, Joao Palhinha all converting for the Whites.

Kenny Tete then dispatched the winning kick after Son Heung-Min, Dejan Kuluvsevski and James Maddison had found the net for Spurs.

Whites boss Marco Silva, who watched from the stand as he served his third touchline ban in two seasons, made six changes to the side that drew at Arsenal on Saturday, handing a full debut to Adama Trarore with Roberto Muniz handed a first start since January 2022.

Fulham dominated the first half and deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes when Tom Cairney worked his way into the box from the left, with his low cross looping over Fraser Forster off Spurs defender Micky Van de Ven.

A much-changed Spurs side, unbeaten under new boss Ange Postecoglou, failed to create any chances of note until they equalised in somewhat bizarre fashion after 56 minutes.

With no member of Fulham's staff on hand to get Tete a replacement boot, the Dutchman took matters into his own hand and raced down the tunnel in search of a new one.

In his absence, Ivan Perisic immediately took full advantage of the space down the Fulham right with Tim Ream getting the final touch to a goal-bound Richarlison header.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Nunez both missed presentable scoring chances for in the second half but Fulham held their nerve in the shoot-out to progress.

Fulham: Rodak, Tete, Ream, Diop, Robinson, Reed (Harris 77), Palhinha, Cairney (Francois 83), De Cordova-Reid (Pereira 77), Trarore (Wilson 63), Muniz (Jimenez 83). Subs not used: Leno, Mbabu, Vinicius, De Fourgerolles.

Fulham 1-1 Tottenham (5-3 on pens): Ange Postecoglou is handed his first defeat as Marco Silva's hosts eliminate Spurs from the Carabao Cup

Fulham beat Tottenham to progress to the second round of the Carabao Cup
Micky van de Ven gave Fulham the lead after scoring a first-half own goal
Spurs responded as Richarlison levelled the game with a 55th-minute strike

Some things change, some things stay the same and Ange Postecoglou's bright new dawn vanished down the River Thames as Tottenham disappeared out of another competition.

Postecoglou took a gamble on wholesale changes in his first Carabao Cup tie and lost.

With Heung-min Son, James Maddison and Co on the bench, Spurs were outplayed and only Fulham's wastefulness in front of goal took the contest into a penalty shootout.

Kenny Tete settled it, converting the fifth spot kick after Marek Rodak made a save from Davinson Sanchez, to send Marco Silva's team into the third round.

An own goal by Micky van de Ven had given them the lead when they were well on top in the first half before Richarlison levelled when the visitors improved after the interval.

Richarlison (left) pulled Spurs level by scoring his first goal of the new season

Micky van de Ven (right) handed Fulham an early lead after turning the ball into his own net

Tottenham are out of this competition before they usually enter it, extending the search for first trophy since 2008. They are not in Europe this season, highly unlikely to win the Premier League title and, suddenly, the FA Cup third round feels a long way off.

Perhaps more importantly, defeat punctures the mood of buoyancy generated by a promising start to the new campaign.

'We put out a line-up we hoped would give us energy,' said Postecoglou. 'That doesn't mean the cup isn't a priority. We're very much at the discovery stage here, we needed to give players the opportunity to contribute. That's why they're here.

'I'm disappointed with the outcome, getting knocked out of the cup. We weren't at our fluent best early on. We lacked a little bit of cohesion and fluency but I liked the way we hung in there, showed character, had our moments but were not able to get over the line. We've come away to a Premier League side and if we'd lost 4-0 maybe would be a different discussion.'

Emerging at Craven Cottage in their dreary third kit, a dark beige, officially described as 'taupe haze' but resembling the murky waters of the nearby Thames, Tottenham's fringe collection, with nine changes made by Postecoglou, were slow to find any rhythm.

Fulham were quicker and sharper, and took the lead in the 19th minute, courtesy of Van de Ven's second own goal in four games, after one at Brentford on his debut.

Tom Cairney twisted past Sanchez not once but twice before cutting a low cross into the penalty area. Harrison Reed darted across without making contact and the ball struck the luckless Dutch defender and spun into the net.

Silva, banned from the touchline after three yellow cards in as many Premier League games, nodded his approval from the empty section, high in the still-incomplete Riverside Stand.

His team might easily have scored more in the first half. Brazilian striker Rodrigo Muniz missed three good chances, heading wide at the back post when the game was goalless before two strong saves by Fraser Forster.

Despite a bench full of first-teamers, Postecoglou's response was to send 19-year-old Dane Scarlett to play up front with Richarlison in a 4-4-2 formation. The switch helped Spurs further up the pitch and forced Fulham 'keeper Rodak into his first save of the night.

He turned over a deflected effort by Richarlison before conceding an equaliser, scored with Fulham down to 10 men because Tete had dashed into the dressing room to replace a torn boot. 'In the future we approach this in a different way,' promised Silva. 'It's the first and last time it will happen.'

Bobby de Cordova-Reid, filling in at right back, was unable to stop Ivan Perisic finding space to deliver the cross met at the back post by Richarlison, whose header contained enough power to beat Tim Ream's attempted clearance.

Fulham hit back, creating clear chances to win it. De Cordova-Reid sliced wide when clean through and sub Harry Wilson was denied twice, first by Sanchez then Forster. Raul Jimenez headed over. Postecoglou was booked in the midst of a breathless finish as the tie went to penalties.

'The best team won, the best team will play in the next round,' said Silva and he was quite right.

Rodak turned over one deflected shot by Richarlison and saw another fizz by from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before conceding an equaliser, scored with Fulham down to 10 men because Kenny Tete had dashed into the dressing room to replace a torn boot.

De Cordova-Reid, filling in at right-back, was unable to stop Ivan Perisic finding space to deliver the cross met at the back post by Richarlison, whose header contained enough power to beat Tim Ream's attempted clearance.

It was only his fourth goal in 12 months since a £60million move from Everton and his first since Harry Kane's exit.

Fulham hit back, creating clear chances to win it in 90 minutes. De Cordova-Reid sliced wide when clean through and sub Harry Wilson was denied twice, first by Sanchez then Forster. Raul Jimenez headed over.

Rodak made a flying save from former Fulham winger Manor Solomon, at the other end, and Spurs boss Postecoglou was booked in the midst of a breathless finish as the tie went to penalties.

Rodak's penalty save in shoot-out sees Fulham ease past Spurs in Carabao Cup
Carabao Cup second round

Fulham (1) 1 Van de Wen og 19

Tottenham (0) 1 Richarlison 56

(Fulham win 5-3 on pens)

Marek Rodak dived low to his left to keep out Davinson Sanchez's penalty to tip a shoot-out Fulham's way as the Cottagers bagged themselves a third round tie.

It is a rare success for the Whites, who had not beaten Spurs in the nine previous meetings and have not won at home to the north Londoners since a 4-0 FA Cup win in 2011. A success was long overdue. And very welcome.

Tottenham's seeming aversion to chasing silverware looks very much intact for now though - despite the very promising signs of life under new boss Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian has enjoyed a fine start to life in the Premier League but, like his predecessors in the dugout, believes the Carabao Cup's early stages are ones he can get through mostly with fringe players.

He made nine changes from the side that won at Bournemouth at the weekend with something to spare and ultimately it cost him and leaves him with only the FA Cup and league to go for with the season not even into September.

Fulham took their cue and went for it and although Spurs upped their game to cancel a first-half lead for the Whites, it was Fulham who prevailed.

The hosts reward for an enterprising approach was an early-ish lead - the result of Tom Cairney tying Sanchez in knots before delivering a low cross which Micky van de Ven clipped into his own net under pressure from Harrison Reed.

Rodrigo Muniz, who headed just wide at the far post after a brilliant surging run past Sanchez by Antonee Robinson, further tested keeper Fraser Forster with a low shot from an angle and a firm downward header after being found by Adama Traore's cross from the right. The stand-in stopper did really well to get down and claw away.

Marco Silva was serving a touchline ban after picking up a third yellow of the season already in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Arsenal, but he opted to retain the man who does his talking for him on the pitch.

The temptation might have been to rest Joao Palhinha after the midfielder's start turn at the Emirates, but he relished being involved again.

Spurs had to improve after a dismal opening 45 minutes and they drew level in embarrassing circumstances for the Whites - when they were temporarily down to 10 men after Tete disappeared down the tunnel towards the Cottage to change his boots.

Taking full advantage, Ivan Perisic curled in a cross from the area recently vacated by Tete and now occupied by Bobby Decordova-Reid. The flighted ball to the far post was met by Richarlison's downward header from close range and Tim Ream, on the line, could not keep it out.

Postecoglou summoned reinforcements off the bench. On came Heung-Min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, Pape Sarr and James Maddison to chase the win,

Manor Solomon nearly claimed it against his old club with a curling shot that Rodak had to stretch to turn aside, but late Spurs pressure was not enough to veer the match away from the penalty decider.

Tete, who paid the price for leaving the pitch, at least had the last laugh. It was he, in his gleaming new white boots, who swept in the clinching fifth spot-kick.

Whites: (4-2-3-1) Rodak - Tete, Diop, Ream, Robinson - Reed (Harris 77), Joao Palhinha - Traore (Wilson 61), Cairney (Francois 83), Decordova-Reid Pereira (77) - Muniz (Jiminez 83)

Spurs: (3-5-2) Forster - Sanchez, van de Ven, Davies - Emerson-Royal, Hojbjerg, Skipp (Sarr 71), Lo Celso (Scarlett h/t), Perisic (Son 71) - Solomon (Maddison 82), Richarlison (Kulusevski 71)

Fulham closing in on the capture of Lucas Ocampos
Marco Silva's Fulham are closing in on the signatures of the 29-year-old Sevilla right-winger Lucas Ocampos.

According to a report by La Colina de Nervion, Fulham are keen on having Lucas Ocampos in their ranks before the end of the transfer window and could already have an agreement in place with Sevilla. The Cottagers are looking to bolster their attack post the departure of Aleksandar Mitrović and the 29-year-old could be a great addition to their ranks.

The Argentine international joined the Spanish club back in the summer of 2019. Since making the move to Spain, he has been an important part of their first team. In the initial years, he was a regular but over the past two seasons, the story hasn't been the same.

Ocampos was unlikely to get much game time at Sevilla last season. As a result, they decided to send him out on a short loan to Ajax. But, things didn't go according to plan as he featured in a total of just six matches and ended up returning to his parent club in the winter break.

Post the winter break, he got a few opportunities at Sevilla and managed to impress. The 29-year-old played an important role in the team towards the end of last season. And, he has already featured in four matches this season with over 300 minutes of game time.

While the Argentine international is a key player for the Spanish club in the new season, he could still end up parting ways with them in the coming days. Ocampos' contract runs out in the summer of 2024. And, with less than a year left, Sevilla could look to cash in on him rather than lose out on him for free next summer.

Fulham are one of the clubs keen on having him in their ranks. The departure of Mitrović to the Saudi Pro League has injected funds into the club and they are looking to make full use of it to bolster their squad. One of their key targets is the 29-year-old.

The Cottagers have been in talks with the Spanish club and according to the report, the two clubs could have an agreement in place for the transfer of the Argentine international. If things go according to plan, Ocampos could join Fulham in the coming days.

Ange Postecoglou throws away chance of silverware as Tottenham risk backfires vs Fulham

FULHAM 1-1 TOTTENHAM (5-3 pens): Spurs were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the second round as Kenny Tete scored the deciding penalty kick for the Premier League side

Ange Postecoglou needs to wake up and smell the coffee – Tottenham are already in the last chance saloon to win a trophy this season.

They were lucky to survive 90 minutes in which Fulham – with head coach Marco Silva consigned to the naughty step – were demonstrably the better side. Davinson Sanchez was the fall-guy in the shoot-out, meaning Spurs are now down to the FA Cup for a realistic shot at silverware. And we're not even out of August yet.

Now on their eighth permanent boss since Juande Ramos delivered the last trophy on White Hart Lane 15 years ago, Postecoglou made nine changes and Spurs stank the place out. Do you want to win a trophy or keep your big guns fresh for a trip to Burnley, Ange?

Justice was done when Kenny Tete, who had needed to make an urgent pit-stop in the dressing room to fetch a new boot, stroked home the winning spot-kick with his replacement footwear. On the day their record goalscorer Harry Kane was pictured in Bavarian lederhosen, toasting his new culture at Bayern Munich with a pint of frothy nectar, Spurs unveiled their ghastly 'taupe haze' third kit.

If your mid-morning coffee is disappointingly insipid, you'll know where Tottenham's commercial department got the idea for their latest fashion statement. Taupe haze? What a latte rubbish. The cappuccino strip is not easy to pick out in your peripheral vision, and Spurs' strangers in the night misplaced too many passes for them all to be attributable to plain incompetence.

Rodrigo Muniz had already headed wide from Antonee Robinson's cross when Fulham – full of beans from the outset – went in front. Skipper Tom Cairney's twisting run was too much for Sanchez and his low cross was turned in by Micky Van de Ven for the Dutchman's second goal of the season - both at the wrong end.

With chairman Daniel Levy sat just yards away on the Craven Cottage balcony, the early setback sent 6,000 travelling missionaries from north London into instant revolt. "We want Levy out," they chanted – and for 45 minutes, it was the only co-ordination Tottenham could muster, on or off the pitch.

Former England keeper Fraser Forster kept Spurs in business with two nimble saves to deny Muniz before the break. Postecoglou responded to the half-baked hogwash by withdrawing the invisible Giovanni Lo Celso at the interval, and Tottenham responded to the boos from the Putney end with an equalise within 11 minutes of the changeover.

With Fulham defender Tete off the field because his boot had split and he was locating a replacement in the dressing room, Ivan Perisic found ample space to pick out Richarlison at the far post. The Brazilian striker's header was only his fourth goal in 12 months for Tottenham, but their relief should have been short-lived, Bobby De Cordova-Reid shanking horribly wide from 12 yards.

However, Fulham were the ones who claimed bragging rights in the end to secure their place in the third round, with a 5-3 win in the penalty shootout.

Fulham beat Tottenham on penalties in League Cup, Leeds knocked out
LONDON, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Fulham beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-3 on penalties to reach the third round of the League Cup after they drew 1-1 at Craven Cottage on Tuesday, while second tier Leeds United also suffered shootout misery as they were dumped out by Salford City.

Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez failed to find the net with their third penalty as Fulham keeper Marek Rodak saved low to his left, before Fulham's Joao Palhinha and Kenny Tete both scored to complete the victory.

In the pouring rain, Fulham took the lead in the 19th minute of the London derby through an own goal from Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven from close range.

Four-times winners Tottenham did not manage a shot on target in the first half and the hosts could have led by two goals at halftime, but Spurs keeper Fraser Forster made a superb save to deny a Rodrigo Muniz header just before the break.

Ange Postecoglou's side drew level in the 56th minute when Richarlison connected with a lofted pass by Ivan Perisic to nod home from a tight angle.

Fulham, however, went close to sealing the win in regular time when Harry Wilson ran onto a loose pass inside the box but Forster's save kept Spurs in the contest.

SALFORD SEE OFF LEEDS
League Two Salford City beat Leeds United 9-8 on penalties also after a 1-1 draw. Both sides missed a penalty in their first five before Leeds' Jamie Shackleton hit the bar, leaving Ossama Ashley to secure victory for Salford.

Second-tier Plymouth Argyle looked on course to cause another upset when they led 2-0 against Premier League Crystal Palace, but Roy Hodgson's side fought back to win 4-2.

Ben Waine gave Plymouth an early lead and Luke Cundle made it 2-0 after the break but forward Odsonne Edouard pulled one back for Palace just before the hour mark followed by a Jean-Philippe Mateta hat-trick.

Bournemouth came from a goal down to win 3-2 at second-tier Swansea City, earning boss Andoni Iraola a first win in charge.

Wolverhampton Wanderers crushed League One Blackpool 5-0 while Premier League new boys Luton Town, who are without a point in two games following their return to the top flight, beat League Two Gillingham 3-2.

Second-half goals by Wilfred Ndidi and Jamie Vardy earned Championship leaders Leicester City a comfortable 2-0 win over League Two Tranmere Rovers.

Five remaining second-round ties, including Chelsea v League Two AFC Wimbledon, will take place on Wednesday.

Fulham 1-1 Tottenham (5-3 pens): Spurs out of Carabao Cup at first hurdle after shootout defeat
Tottenham will have to win the Premier League or FA Cup this season to end their 15-year wait for a trophy after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Fulham.

Richarlison had opened his account for the season to cancel out a 19th-minute own-goal from Micky van de Ven, which had given the hosts a deserved half-time advantage despite being without boss Marco Silva, who was serving a touchline ban.

No further goals were forthcoming and the 1-1 scoreline at 90 minutes meant spot-kicks were required and after five successful penalties a low effort from Davinson Sanchez which was saved by Marek Rodak proved the difference.

Kenny Tete fired Fulham's fifth penalty past Fraser Forster to book their place in the third round and leave Tottenham with only one realistic option of trying to end their trophy drought, which stretches back to 2008.

Both of these Premier League teams had exited this competition at the first opportunity last season, but 15 changes were made overall with Spurs making nine after entering at the second round stage for the first time since 2009.

Fulham went with largely their first-choice back four and left-back Antonee Robinson created the opening opportunity when he burst past Sanchez and crossed to the back post, but Rodrigo Muniz headed wide.

It was a sign of things to come from Sanchez, who had been expected to leave this summer but instead has moved up the defensive pecking order ahead of Eric Dier under Ange Postecoglou.

Sanchez continued to be troubled and was at fault for the opener in the 19th minute.

Tom Cairney turned Sanchez inside out on the edge of the penalty area and his floated cross was deflected beyond Forster by Spurs' centre-back Van de Ven.

Postecoglou had brought a feelgood factor back to Tottenham after a difficult first half of 2023, but the away fans at Craven Cottage turned their frustration to chairman Daniel Levy with chants calling for him to leave the club.

Forster had to be alert soon after to deny Muniz's snapshot before Spurs did finally threaten but Richarlison's effort was blocked by Tim Ream and Ivan Perisic had a free-kick deflected wide.

The lively Muniz went close again on the stroke of half-time with a header from Adama Traore's cross, but Forster saved well to keep it 1-0.

Spurs boss Postecoglou had still seen enough and teenage forward Dane Scarlett was introduced for Giovani Lo Celso.

It had an immediate impact with Richarlison forcing Marek Rodak to tip over his deflected shot before Scarlett's presence created a chance for Manchester United-linked Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who side-footed wide from 10 yards.

The leveller did arrive with 56 minutes played and it was a moment to savour for Richarlison, who stooped low at the back post to head in Perisic's cross for only his fourth goal for Tottenham since a £60million move last summer.

Fulham were unhappy that Perisic was able to make the most of the hosts' absent right-back Tete, who had to leave the pitch to get a new boot after a fine tackle on Scarlett moments earlier.

The hosts improved after conceding with Bobby Decordova-Reid slicing wide from inside the area and substitute Harry Wilson had an effort blocked by Sanchez.

Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min were on by this point and Manor Solomon nearly won it for Spurs with a curled effort but Rodak saved, before Forster denied Wilson with his legs to ensure penalties were required.

Fulham were picture perfect from 12 yards with Andreas Pereira, Raul Jimenez, Wilson, Joao Palhinha and Tete all able to score while Sanchez's tame effort ensured Tottenham exited in the second round for the first time since 2005.

Kenny Tete seals shootout win for Fulham over Tottenham
Tottenham suffered their first on-pitch setback of the Ange Postecoglou era after they exited the Carabao Cup in the second round at Fulham after Davinson Sanchez crucially had an effort saved in a 5-3 defeat on penalties.

Richarlison had opened his account for the season to cancel out a 19th-minute own-goal from Micky van de Ven, which had given the hosts a deserved half-time advantage despite being without boss Marco Silva, who was serving a touchline ban.

Fulham player ratings from EFL Cup win against Tottenham –  Robinson impresses as Cottagers progress to the third round
Fulham had a night to remember in the Carabao Cup as they beat Tottenham 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in their second-round tie.

Marco Silva's side were deservedly 1-0 up at the break through a Micky Van de Ven own goal but were pegged back in the second half by a Richarlison header.

Here are Dan Evans' player ratings from Craven Cottage.

Marek Rodak – 6
Rarely called into action throughout the 90 minutes but did make a straightforward stop from a deflected Richarlison shot not long before the Brazilian equalised and did brilliantly to get his fingertips to a late effort from former team-mate Solomon. Not a lot he could have done about the goal. Read Davinson Sanchez well to make the only save of the shootout.

Kenny Tete – 5
Was playing well up until he ran back to the dressing room to find a new boot in the 55th minute. Perhaps he would have been punished by the referee if he had stopped and made someone else collect it for him based on the new time-wasting protocols, but his absence allowed Perisic space to cross for the Tottenham equaliser. Tried a wild shot from all of 30 yards to make amends and sliced well wide. Redeemed himself with the winning penalty.

Tim Ream – 6
A composed return to the team for the centre-back, keeping Richarlison at bay for much of the game. Crucially lost the striker for the Tottenham goal though and some of his passing was loose at times.

Issa Diop – 6
Came out on top in a couple of physical battles with Richarlison but was another who was rarely troubled throughout. Spurs' insistence on keeping possession rather than playing balls into the box meant there were few headers for him to win.

Antonee Robinson – 8
Was exceptional in the first half, picking off Tottenham passes and marauding forward almost at will. Provided more than one excellent cross that would have been lapped up by Mitrovic last season. Faded in an attacking sense after the break but still applied himself well defensively.

Harrison Reed – 7
Instrumental in Fulham's excellent first half, popping up all over the pitch to provide a passing option for a team-mate and win back possession whenever it was lost. His run into the box forced Van de Ven to turn into his own net. Another victim of Spurs' improved showing after the break as his influence waned. Taken off in the final 15 minutes and Fulham got better thanks to the fresh legs.

Joao Palhinha – 6
Typically destructive when Tottenham had the ball but was sloppy in possession on more than one occasion. Held the fort well when his regular partner Reed was replaced but will feel he wasn't able to provide the necessary control in the second half to help Fulham see the game out.

Adama Traore – 5
This was the full Adama Traore experience for Fulham fans. Looked lively throughout and seemed as though he could have given the ageing legs of Spurs' captain Ben Davies a long night but never delivered on the promise. Plenty of fun to watch but only provided one quality cross that forced Forster into a save from Muniz. Taken off on the hour mark after an ineffective start to the second half.

Tom Cairney – 7
Another who was excellent in the first half but faded badly after the interval. Instrumental in the opening goal as he twisted Davinson Sanchez inside out before seeing his cross turned in by Micky Van de Ven. Looked to be forced off with an injury in the second half that will surely be a source of frustration for Silva.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid – 6
Linked well with Robinson down the left in the first half but should have done more to close down the Perisic cross that Spurs equalised from. Was given a much-deserved rest in the final 15 minutes as he was replaced by Pereira.

Rodrigo Muniz – 4
Had three presentable chances in the first half that could extended Fulham's lead and taken the game away from Spurs but failed to take any of them. Was a willing runner and put himself about but he will surely need to start scoring chances like these if he is to establish himself as Silva's first-choice striker ahead of Jimenez and Vinicius. Replaced by the Mexican forward in the closing stages.

Subs:
Harry Wilson – 7
A bright cameo from the Welshman. Showed a lot more guile than Traore down the right and was unlucky not to notch a winner in normal time after seeing a stabbed effort saved by Forster.

Andreas Pereira – 6
Was busy and provided plenty of energy to help Fulham wrestle back some control in midfield.

Luke Harris – 6
Similarly energetic in the closing stages and prevented Spurs from gaining too much control.

Raul Jimenez – NA

Tyrece Francois – NA

Silva: Fulham deserved cup win
Fulham boss Marco Silva felt his side fully deserved their Carabao Cup win over Tottenham.

And Silva says measures will be taken to ensure a farce which saw Kenny Tete being forced off the field to fetch a new boot from the dressing room do not happen again.

Tete, who scored the winning penalty in a shootout at Craven Cottage, raced down the tunnel 11 minutes into the second half after tearing his boot.

During his temporary absence, Spurs took full advantage to equalise through a Richarlison header after Fulham had gone ahead through a first-half Mickey Van de Ven own goal.

Silva felt his side deserved the win the game but was hugely frustrated as the hosts had squandered a host of good opportunities.

"For sure in the future we are going to approach it in a different way as we gave the opposition the chance to play against 10 men," Silva said.

"It was the first and it will be the last time it happens.

"The referee should do what he did, which is to let the game go on, but we need to approach it in a different way.

"Now the players know what they should do in that moment. It was not the best and we are going to talk about it more because we have conceded a goal, but even if we had not, with more maturity we will do it in a different way."

Fulham were the better side for much of the game, despite Silva making five changes from the side that drew at Arsenal, with Joao Palhinha, one of the five successful penalty takers, outstanding in midfield.

"We were the better side, we deserved to win, " Silva said.

"From the first minute the players were on the front foot and the players executed the game plan well and the players understood the right moments to press.

"We didn't let them settle and that was one of the key reasons we grew in confidence in the 97 minutes. We had the better chances to score and played better."

Marco Silva on 'best team' Fulham inflicting defeat on Tottenham – and penalty here Tete's costly boot issue
Marco Silva felt his Fulham side more than merited their penalty shootout win against Tottenham in the second round of the EFL Cup.

Kenny Tete completed a peculiar evening by scoring the decisive spot-kick after Richarlison had cancelled out a Micky Van de Ven own goal in the second half.

Despite the late drama, Silva was content that the right team progressed on the night.

"The best team won," he said. "What's clear is from the first minute we were on the front foot. That was the plan and the players executed it.

"We pressed them really high and didn't let them set. That was one of the keys for us throughout the game to give us the confidence we needed.

"During the 97 minutes we were the team with more chances to score, we played better and it (the win) was deserved."

Richarlison's 56th-minute equaliser arrived when Tete was back in the Fulham dressing room changing one of his boots after it had ripped.

Referee Joshua Smith sent him from the field to find alternative footwear, forcing the home side to defend with 10 men temporarily.

Without explaining the finer details of the incident, Silva made clear that his team would not be conceding in similar circumstances any time soon.

"In the future we are going to approach this in a different way because we gave the opposition an opportunity against 10 men for two or three minutes," he explained. "It is the first and last time that this is going to happen to us."

When asked how Fulham will approach similar situations in the future, Silva simply said "you will have to wait and see".

Silva, who was serving a touchline ban after picking up three yellow cards in the first three games of the Premier League season, did not put any blame on the officials.

"The referee did what he should have done to keep the game going," he said. "We have to approach the situation in a different way."

The Portuguese boss was forced to watch the victory from the upper tier of the Riverside Stand, and made it clear it was not something he planned to do again in the future.

"It's really difficult [to watch from the stands]," he said. "The vision is perfect to analyse the game I have to tell you. It is the perfect place for the analysts, but my place is on the touchline."

Rodak and Tete send Spurs out
Marek Rodak and Kenny Tete were the penalty shoot-out heroes as Fulham sent Tottenham Hotspur crashing out of the League Cup this evening – and inflicted Ange Postecoglou's first defeat as Spurs boss. Marco Silva's side might have deserved a win on the balance of a watchable ninety minutes but Rodak, who has relegated to second choice goalkeeper by the brilliance of Bernd Leno, saved from Davinson Sanchez with Fulham scoring all five of their spot-kicks. Tete, who been off the pitch searching for a new boot when Richarlison equalised, tucked away the winning penalty in front of the Hammersmith End.

Where Postecoglou offered his fringe players an opportunity to impress, Fulham fielded a far stronger starting eleven than many might have expected with a trip to Manchester City on the horizon. João Palhinha picked off where he had left off at Arsenal on Saturday, snapping into tackles and freeing Tom Cairney with an early opportunity almost falling the way of Rodrigo Muniz. The Brazilian forward, preferred to his compatriot Carlos Vinicius, then spurned a glorious opportunity heading wide from six yards after climbing to meet a far-post cross from Antonee Robinson.

The hosts put Spurs under serious pressure and they got their reward on twenty minutes. Bobby Decorodva-Reid released Cairney down the left and the Fulham captain crept into the area, mesmerised Sanchez and Emerson Royal, twisting and turning with the ball at his feet, before firing a ball across goal that was diverted past Fraser Forster by Micky van de Ven. Spurs struggled to fashion a response, with Rodak a spectator in the first half, whilst Muniz saw a downward header from Tete's cross clawed away by Fraser Forster.

A pained Postecoglou replaced Giovani Le Celso with Dane Scarlett for the second half and Spurs improved – although they could hardly have been worse. Rodak displayed his agility to tip over a shot from Richarlison that had looped off Tim Ream, but the Whites still looked in control until Tete's boot split in half after he went in for a challenge. The Dutch full back dashed down the tunnel to find a replacement, but whilst Silva's side were down to ten men, Tottenham levelled. Ivan Perisic exploited the space vacated by Tete as he ran at Decordova-Reid and sent over a deep cross that was nodded home from close range by Richarlison.

A sense of injustice seemed to spark Fulham into life. Harry Wilson, who replaced the pacey Adama Traore, fashioned a chance for Decordova-Reid almost immediately after a purposeful run but the Jamaican international slipped at the crucial moment and skewed his shot wide of the far post on the stretch. Wilson then worked an opening along left flank after intricate interplay with Cairney, but Forster blocked his low shot.

Manor Solomon might have reprised one of his wonder goals from last season but Rodak repelled the Israeli winger's curling shot from the left flank before Raul Jimenez flicked a back header over the bar during seven minutes of added time. The prospect of penalties would have filled Fulham fans with foreboding but the hosts scored all five, whilst Rodak guessed right to save from Sanchez. After Pereira, Jimenez, Wilson and Palhinha had all succeeded from the spot, Tete kept his nerve to send Fulham into round three.

FULHAM (4-2-3-1): Rodak; Tete, A. Robinson, Diop, Ream; Palhinha, Reed (Harris 77); Traore (Wilson 61), Decordova-Reid (Pereira 77), Cairney (Francois 83); Muniz (Jimenez 83). Subs (not used): Leno, Mbabu, de Fougerolles.

Fulham agree a deal with Sevilla to sign Argentina international Lucas Ocampos... with the Cottagers waiting for the winger's approval to move forward

Fulham have agreed a deal to sign Argentinian Lucas Ocampos from Sevilla
But the 29-year-old is yet to agree to the prospective Premier League switch

Fulham have agreed a deal with Sevilla for forward Lucas Ocampos but are waiting on the 29-year-old's approval.

Marco Silva has been on the hunt for offensive reinforcements throughout this summer, having lost last season's top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic to Al-Hilal earlier this month.

Ocampos comes with a proven pedigree of performing at the highest levels, having been consistent feature of Sevilla's continental success in recent years.

The 29-year-old was named in the Europa League Squad of the Season after helping Sevilla to victory in the tournament during his maiden season at the club, before again enjoying Europa League success last season.

Ocampos spent a brief spell last season on loan at Ajax, but made just four appearances for the Eredivisie club before returning to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Fulham have agreed a deal to sign Lucas Ocampos from Sevilla, pending the player's approval

Ocampos has won two Europa Leagues during his time at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium

Meanwhile Tosin Adarabioyo looks set to depart Craven Cottage with Monaco interested in signing him

Meanwhile Silva's side have also signed Timothy Castagne from Leicester for £15million.

The Belgium international joins the Cottagers in a four-year deal, with the club retaining the option for a fifth.

Tosin Adarabioyo could soon be on his way out of Craven Cottage as Monaco push to sign him.

The 25-year-old was not included in the squad for Fulham's EFL Cup win over Tottenham, with the Ligue 1 side keen to sign the Man City academy graduate for £10m.
