Iwobi scores in Fulham cup win
Fulham 2 Norwich 1

Alex Iwobi's first Fulham goal helped them secure a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Fulham opened the scoring after just 12 minutes through Carlos Vinicius.

A set-piece routine, no doubt practiced on the training pitch, was perfectly executed as Willian floated a cross to Iwobi at the back post, who squared it to the Brazilian forward for a tap-in.

Iwobi turned from provider to scorer in the second half with a beautiful finish from the edge of the area, firing low and hard into the bottom-left corner past keeper George Long.

The Championship side struck back just three minutes later through substitute Borja Sainz.

After a mazy run from the halfway line following a misplaced pass from Joao Palhinha, Sainz lost possession once inside the box, but Fulham failed to clear the loose ball and the Spaniard made them pay.

Fulham were dominant but wasteful, with just three shots on target from more than 20 attempts. Their lack of clinical finishing led to a nervous finish to the game as Norwich pushed for an equaliser.

The visitors threatened on the counter-attack all evening, most notably through substitutes Sainz and Adam Idah, but ultimately could not carve out the chance to level the tie.

Fulham: Rodak; Castagne, Diop, Bassey (Ream 83), Ballo-Toure (Robinson 69); Palhinha, Cairney, Wilson, Iwobi, Willian (De Cordova-Reid 79), Vinicius (Muniz 79).

Fulham 2-1 Norwich City: FLW report as hosts book their place in Carabao Cup fourth round
FLW reports live from Craven Cottage...

Fulham booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup courtesy of a 2-1 win over Championship side Norwich City at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night.

The hosts looked to have the game wrapped up after 72 minutes when Alex Iwobi doubled their lead with their first goal for the club following Carlos Vinicius' 12th-minute opener but substitute Borja Sainz responded three minutes later to ensure it was a nervy finish in West London.

Ultimately, it was the Premier League side that progressed but given their injury issues and promotion aspirations, David Wagner is unlikely to be too disappointed at the cup exit and will take heart from his side's defiant display on a night when they were forced to do lots of defending.

Fulham 2-1 Norwich City
Wagner may have made nine changes from the side that were heavily beaten by Plymouth Argyle on the weekend but the German coach will still have wanted to see a response from his players. Unfortunately, they were on the back foot from the off and behind inside 12 minutes.

Building Fulham pressure saw both Iwobi and Joao Palhinha head over the top before Vinicius bundled in the opener. Willian's deep free-kick found Iwobi in acres of space and the summer signing's first-time cross evaded George Long and the Norwich defence, allowing the striker to bag his second in three games in 2023/24.

The West Londoners' dominance continued after the goal but a rare foray forward gave Norwich a golden chance to level, which Tony Springett spurned. Przemyslaw Placheta showed his pace to burn Timothy Castagne in transition and pull the ball back to the arriving Springett, who pushed his effort wide of Marek Rodak and the left-hand post from 10 yards out.

A respite from ongoing Fulham forward pressure, Placheta's pace was continuing to prove an issue and, having switched wings, the Pole burst down the right to create a chance for Ui-Jo Hwang as we neared the half hour but the on-loan Nottingham Forest striker couldn't capitalise and allowed the hosts a chance to clear. The striker, who could well be a key player in the coming weeks given the injury issues up top, had seen an effort smothered minutes before by Rodak.

Wagner's side may have wrestled back a little control and were just one down at the half but the attacking quality of the Premier League side meant that chances were never far away. The clearest illustration of that fact came six minutes before the break when Vinicius very nearly added his second - putting Fode Ballo-Toure's low cross wide of the post from close range after a slick move.

Whatever the German coach said to his side at halftime seemed to work wonders as the visitors were in the ascendancy after the restart but they were limited to long-range efforts - with Sam McCallum whipping a low strike wide and then Kellen Fisher crashing a speculative effort against the post.

Normal service soon resumed, however, and were it not for a block from debutant centre-back Jaden Warner, Vinicius would have doubled Fulham's lead in the 57th minute. Three minutes later it was Adam Forshaw's turn to save his side as he cleared Wilson's volley direct from a corner off the line.

The Canaries were just about able to hold back wave after wave of Fulham attacks and even looked dangerous themselves on the break - with a sliding Springett putting McCallum's probing cross just wide in the 68th minute.

Eventually, Fulham's pressure told as the visitors gave up possession in a dangerous area and Iwobi slammed an edge-of-the-box effort past a full-stretch George Long.

2-0 up after 72 minutes, the third round tie looked wrapped up but the Cottagers' celebrations were short-lived as three minutes later Sainz pulled one back. The Spaniard held off a defender and finished coolly after being fed by fellow substitute Jonathan Rowe.

With fellow first-teamers Adam Idah, Gabriel Sara and Kenny McLean all also introduced, Wagner's side ensured it was a nervy finish for the hosts - though they needed Long's diving save to keep their hopes alive with five minutes left of the 90.

Referee Craig Pawson had a decision to make when Rowe hit the turf after bursting into the Fulham box in the dying moments but he rightfully waved away calls for a penalty. You always felt Norwich would get one more chance in the five minutes of stoppage time and though it fell to in-form Gabriel Sara, he scuffed his shot and Rodak eventually gathered.

Defeat and a cup exit for the Canaries but there were certainly positives for Wagner to take - not least their threat on the break and the performances of young defenders Fisher and Warner. The focus now shifts to Birmingham City.

Fulham v Norwich City: What is the attendance at Craven Cottage?
The attendance at Craven Cottage for Fulham v Norwich City in the third round of the Carabao Cup was 12,831.

That included 2,400 away fans.

Marco Silva post-match reaction
Speaking to FLW after the game, Silva made it clear that it was job done for his side as they deservedly booked their place in the fourth round.

"We are going to keep playing in the competition and that was our aim before," he said.

"Playing at home is always a very good advantage for us in these type of ties and overall, we were the team that deserved to win more."

He added: "We had some good moments. We missed many, many chances to kill the game and to score more goals. Until this moment, you take all the hope and belief from these type of teams and all the enthusiasm they play with in these type of competitions. It is always tough and the game is always open. They believe always.

"It was a good game for us. We made seven changes but we took the competition really seriously and we deserve to be there in the next round."

David Wagner post-match reaction
While he was disappointed to see his side out of the Carabao Cup, Wagner clearly saw the positives from his side's display - particularly after the weekend's heavy defeat.

He told FLW: "Obviously you are never happy when you concede a defeat but how the players responded after Saturday's performance and result, which was more than bad, was just great.

"It was good to see that if we play from our structure if we play to our principles, we are a side who can perform on a decent level who can be uncomfortable for a Premier League side.

"It was nice to see that is still the case, even if we make a lot of changes, that the players know how we like to attack and defend.

"This was good to see, it gives everybody a major boost for what is now in front of us. We can't change the past, what we have done wrong in the last Championship game, it is done, but we can change the future and today it was the first step.

"Obviously the future for us is Birmingham on Saturday, where we'd like to make sure that we continue showing what we've shown today and get back to a winning track."

Carlos Vinicius and Alex Iwobi strike in Fulham's win over Norwich
Fulham advanced into the Carabao Cup fourth round after they fought hard to beat Norwich 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

Goals from Carlos Vinicius and Alex Iwobi were enough for Marco Silva's men who responded well after the weekend's lacklustre 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

Fulham found success early on down the left flank through Willian and Fode Ballo-Toure, who created a 10th-minute chance for Vinicius that the striker headed over.

Vinicius justified a run out after his winner against Luton two weeks ago and he opened the scoring in the 10th minute.

Willian's floated delivery found Iwobi at the back stick and he headed it across goal to Vinicius who tapped home.

Silva had called for more chances to be created during games and Fulham did just that through Harry Wilson, Willian and Tom Cairney.

Norwich responded and fluffed a golden chance to level against the run of play in the 19th minute when Przemyslaw Placheta's driven cross fell kindly to Tony Springett, who dragged his shot wide.

Minutes later Norwich's whipped corner found the head of towering centre-back Jaden Warner and Marek Rodak saved.

A neat switch from Wilson in the 39th minute resulted in the ball being played back in the other direction to Vinicius who should of doubled his tally from six yards.

The tide changed after half-time and it was Norwich's turn to put pressure on the hosts.

It started with Sam McCallum who beautifully slalomed through white shirts before firing wide.

In the 51st minute, Kellen Fisher let fly from outside the box but his effort clipped the outside of Rodak's post as Norwich were denied any rewards for their attacking flurry.

Craven Cottage demanded more and on the hour Silva's men threw numbers forward in an effort to firm their grip on the tie.

Willian, who was the standout player for the hosts, delivered a floated corner which fell to the unmarked Wilson who sweetly volleyed past goalkeeper George Long before Adam Forshaw managed a last-ditch clearance off the line to keep it at 1-0.

But Fulham doubled their lead in the 72nd minute.

Iwobi drove forward with the ball and combined with Wilson before the Nigerian guided the ball into the bottom corner to open his Fulham account.

But typical of the end-to-end game, Norwich equalised after 75 minutes through Borja Sainz.

The explosive Adam Idah burst away on a counter-attack and found Sainz whose first attempt was denied by Rodak before he managed to bundle the ball into the net to give the Norfolk side hope.

Despite Norwich's best efforts Fulham held their nerve during five minutes added time to seal victory.

Fulham 2-1 Norwich City

Alex Iwobi scored his first goal for Fulham since his deadline-day move from Everton

Alex Iwobi scored on his first start for Fulham as Marco Silva's side beat Norwich City to set up a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie with Ipswich.

The Nigeria midfielder finished off a fine team move in the second half after Carlos Vinicius' first-half opener at Craven Cottage.

Norwich had more shots on target and reduced the deficit through a debut strike from Borja Sainz, but the Championship side could not find a goal to take the tie to penalties.

Vinicius put Fulham ahead on 12 minutes with a close-range finish from Willian's free-kick for his second goal in three games.

The Brazilian almost doubled the lead for Silva's side just before the break, but his first-time finish from Fode Ballo-Toure's pass was dragged just wide.

As Norwich lost possession in their own half, Fulham worked their way around the Canaries' box and Iwobi eventually scored their second in the 72nd minute with a tidy finish into the bottom corner from Harry Wilson's lay-off.

It was his first goal on his first start for the Cottagers after his deadline-day move from Everton.

David Wagner's side responded quickly as Sainz fired past Marek Rodak on the turn, but it was too little, too late for the Championship side.

Fulham will visit Championship side Ipswich in the last 16 as they look to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign.

Fulham boss Marco Silva: "We had some good moments but we missed many chances to kill the game before and to score more goals. Until the moment [Iwobi's goal] we did not take the goal and against this type of team who have enthusiasm in this competition the game was tough and was always open.

"As you know he [Iwobi] is a player I know really well and I was responsible for him to sign for Everton as well. I know what he can do as a player for ourselves in different positions on the pitch. He has qualities, he's dynamic and his energy as well is going to make him an important player for us."

Norwich manager David Wagner: "It was good to see us play by our structure and principles. We are a side who can be good against a Premier League side, which is still the case even though we made changes. It was good and it will give us a major boost for what is in front of us."

Carabao Cup: Iwobi nets first Fulham goal in victory over Norwich City
The Super Eagles midfielder just joined the Cottagers this month, and he has started showing his prowess

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi scored the second goal for Fulham in their 2-1 victory over Norwich City in the Carabao Cup round of 32, Soccernet reports.

Iwobi got his first start under coach Marco Silva when Fulham welcomed Norwich City to Craven Cottage. Also, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey was in the defence for the Cottagers.

Fulham got a dream start, as they got in front in the 12th minute via a strike from Carlos Vinicius. Fulham had more quality on the pitch, and with Iwobi running the show from midfield, they bossed the possession. Iwobi had 64 touches and 41 passes in the game. He also had two tackles and won four of his six duels.

Despite dominating the play, Fulham had to wait till the 72nd minute before they got their second, and it was via a stroke of brilliance from Iwobi.

Fulham won the ball deep in Norwich City's half, and Harry Wilson played a pass to Iwobi, who was just outside the box. The Nigerian then struck a low shot into the bottom left corner of Norwich City's goal to make it 2-0.

However, Borja Sainz pulled one back for Norwich City in the 75th minute to make it 2-1. It eventually ended that way at Craven Cottage.

Marco Silva knows Fulham need to start taking their chances
Marco Silva called for Fulham to be more ruthless in front of goal after their narrow 2-1 win over Norwich in the Carabao Cup third round.

Goals from Carlos Vinicius and Alex Iwobi sealed victory for the Cottagers despite Borja Sainz's 75th-minute effort for the visitors.

Manager Silva believes Fulham need to convert more chances after they nearly paid the price for their earlier missed opportunities.

"We had some good moments but we missed many chances to kill the game before and to score more goals," Silva said.

"Until the moment (Iwobi's goal) we did not take the goal and against this type of team who have enthusiasm in this competition the game was tough and was always open.

"We created a big number of chances but we need to be more ruthless and effective.

"We have to finish moments when the ball is inside the box. We had it from the right and from the left so many times.

"We need to be more assertive in those moments because we created enough."

Iwobi's memorable second-half strike was his first Fulham goal since his reported £22million move from Everton on deadline day.

Silva lauded the Nigerian and mentioned the reasons behind signing the midfielder.

"As you know he's a player I know really well and I was responsible for him to sign for Everton as well," Silva added.

"I know what he can do as a player for ourselves in different positions on the pitch.

"He has qualities, he's dynamic and his energy as well is going to make him an important player for us."

Norwich manager David Wagner credited his side's performance on a night where they narrowly avoided drawing level and forcing the game to penalties.

He said: "It was good to see us play by our structure and principles. We are a side who can be good against a Premier League side which is still the case even though we made changes.

"It was good and it will give us a major boost for what is in front of us."

Fulham 2-1 Norwich: Carlos Vinicius and Alex Iwobi on target in hard-fought Carabao Cup win
Cottagers back among the goals after Crystal Palace stalemate to tee up trip to Championship high-flyers Ipswich

Iwobi fires Fulham into round four
Alex Iwobi shone on his first Fulham start making the first goal and scoring the winner as Marco Silva's men beat a spirited Norwich City 2-1 to reach the fourth round of the League Cup at Craven Cottage tonight.

The Nigerian international, who has made a few impressive cameos from the bench after signing from Everton on deadline day, put the opening goal on a plate for Carlos Vincius by heading a clever free-kick from Willian across goal, allowing the Brazilian striker to prod home the simplest of finishes from close range. The lively midfielder than placed a precise finish past George Long and into the bottom from 20 yards after a lovely lay-off from Harry Wilson and hosts held on despite debutant Borja Sainz setting up a nervy finale with an emphatic finish following fine wing play by Jon Rowe.

Fulham held on to progress in the competition after an enthralling end-to-end encounter that didn't seem devalued by both sides making significant changes to their regular sides. Norwich boss David Wagner made nine changes to the side that suffered at the hands of Portsmouth on Saturday and the visitors initially struggled to live with the Cottagers' precise passing and power. The home attack was given another dimension by the regular forays forward of debutant Fedo Ballo-Toure, who popped up frequently in the final third.

The on-loan AC Milan left back won an early corner which Iwobi nodded over at the near post before a short corner was worked to Tom Cairney only for Joao Palhinha to waste a free header. Fulham did hit the front two minutes later when Iwobi got his head to Willian's free-kick and Vinicius supplied the finish touch from barely a yard out. Willian might have doubled the lead shortly afterwards when he was allowed to surge infield from the left but the wily winger's curler flew just wide of the far post – and Norwich nearly made him pay from their very next attack.

Przemys?aw P?acheta ghosted past Timothy Catasgne and squared superbly for Tony Springett, who somehow rolled his shot wide from ten yards out. Marek Rodak then made two smart saves in quick succession to deny Sean McCallum and Ui-Jo Hwang before Harry Wilson did superbly to set up Tom Cairney only for the Fulham captain to snatch at the shot. Vinicius was afforded the perfect opportunity to double his tally from Ballo-Toure but the Brazilian striker shot wide from six yards out.

Norwich came again after the interval with McCallum shooting narrowly wide from 20 yards after sauntering through the middle of the park. The Canaries went closer six minutes after half time when Fulham failed to clear a corner and Kellen Fisher's first-volley clipped the outside of the past with Rodak rooted to the spot. Those lucky escapes seemed to prompt Fulham to lift their game. Wilson unselfishly teed up Vincius, who saw his effort blocked, before Iwobi's follow-up was deflected away for a corner.

A clever set-piece routine followed with Willian picking out Wilson, who was lurking on the edge of area. The Welshman's venomous volley beat Long but was headed off the line. Iwobi looked to secured the home side's safe passage into the next round when he finished off a flowing move that began with Vinicius hunting down the ball inside the Norwich penalty area, but Sainz finished confidently at the second attempt after space opened up in front of the Fulham back four.

Substitute Rodrigo Muniz was denied by a superb save from Norwich goalkeeper Long when the Brazilian powerfully headed down a Bobby Decordova-Reid cross before Gabriel Sara shot wastefully wide in stoppage time as the Whites held on to reach round four.

Iwobi scores first goal in Fulham colours after logging 114 minutes, bettering Arsenal and Super Eagles mark
Alex Iwobi was among the scorers as Fulham progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 win over Norwich City at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

In what was his starting debut for the Cottagers, the Nigeria international scored a crucial second goal in the 72nd minute when he slotted into the bottom corner after he was played in by Harry Wilson.

Overall, Iwobi logged 114 minutes combined spread across three games before opening his goalscoring account for Fulham - the second fastest time it has taken for the midfielder to get off the mark for clubs and country.

The Hale End Academy graduate totaled 573 minutes in fourteen matches - comprising two in the UEFA Champions League, five in the FA Cup, one in the League Cup and six in the Premier League - before scoring his first goal for Arsenal in a league game versus Everton on March 19, 2016.

The quickest time he has scored for his club was at Everton, where he needed only 108 minutes.

On his full debut for the Toffees, Iwobi netted in the 81st minute in a 4-2 win over Lincoln City in the League Cup on August 28, 2019.

He totaled 233 minutes combined in seven matches before his first Super Eagles goal and it came in a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

Silva satisfied with Fulham's progress
Marco Silva was pleased that Fulham reached the fourth round of the League Cup after a 2-1 win over Norwich City – but felt his side should have been more ruthless.

Goals from Carlos Vinicius and Alex Iwobi had given the Londoners a commanding advantage in what was a very open tie, but the Whites were made to sweat after Canaries' substitute Borja Sainz halved the visitors' arrears. Silva told his post-match press conference at Craven Cottage:

"It was a good game for us, I believe. We took the competition really serious, and we deserve to be there in the next round. Overall it was good for us, and we are going to be serious, like always, in the Carabao and FA Cup when we come to play.

They are competitions that we're going to look at seriously, always prepare as important games for us, to give us a good opportunity to keep in the competition. We have created a big number of chances, of course we have to be more ruthless, we have to be more effective in some moments. When the ball arrives in certain areas inside the box we have to finish the moments. We cannot go from the right to the left so many times to make the last pass, the last cross.

Okay, it was great from Norwich, the way they defend the box in some moments, but we must be more assertive in those moments, we should have created more chances and scored more goals, because we created enough."

The Fulham head coach was delighted to see Iwobi open his Fulham account towards the end of his first start for his new club.

"As you know, he's a player that I know really well. I was responsible for him signing for Everton as well. A player that I know what he can do for ourselves in many different positions on the pitch. He has quality, he's dynamic, and his energy, as well, means he's going to be another important player for us."

How do they calculate shots on target? It says we only had 3, but I saw at least 5/6. There were 2 goals and the save from Muniz and at least 3 defenders throwing themselves in front of the ball when it was bound for the back of the net.

It's only saves plus goals. Blocks don't count even if they were going to hit the target
