1990 was when i started paying some interest in football, so i had no idea that the US team were pretty much all amateur footballers before then. They hadn't made a world cup in 40 years! I'd never have thought that, at the height of their power in 1990, they were THAT far behind the rest of the world at 'soccer'. It really wasn't that long ago when you consider that Dwight Yorke and Gianluca Vialli were part of the teams they came up against.

...And, of course, 10 years later the US national team would have a player at our club for almost all of the next 20 years.
