Man Utd face transfer raid with collapsed summer move finally set to go through
Manchester United could yet face bids for Scott McTominay as Fulham review their options with Bayern Munich poised to return after their failed summer move for Joao Palhinha

Bayern Munich are ready to return for Fulham's Joao Palhinha - which could have knock-on effects for Manchester United.

The Portugal midfielder has been a big hit at Craven Cottage and attracted attention from some of Europe's heavyweights back in the summer. Bayern backed up their interest with a bid and Palhinha was negotiating with the German giants late on deadline day.

Eventually, though time ran out with Fulham conscious that they couldn't get a replacement in time. One man on their radar was Manchester United's Scott McTominay, as per Sky Sports, who at that point didn't look to feature in Erik ten Hag's plans with minutes at a premium.

Should Fulham lose Palhinha they may look to test the United player's resolve. He underlined his importance with a match-winning brace against Brentford earlier this season and has featured heavily since then. Competition though remains fierce at United and, should the likes of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes all be available at the same time, it remains to be seen whether McTominay would retain a starting berth.

Bayern's sporting director, Christoph Freund, has confirmed that they and Thomas Tuchel are reviewing the market which could lead to a second swoop for the Portuguese star. He told Bild: "Of course, he is still on our radar.

"The club worked intensively with Palhinha in the summer. I was there for a bit on the last, strange day of the transfer window, but you can't say yet what will happen. We are generally exploring the market."

Fulham could move for Scott McTominay should they lose Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich
The Fulham star himself confessed that his failed move to the Allianz Arena did irk with him in the immediate aftermath. "I don't know what will happen in the future," he told O Jogo. "Obviously, it's really affected me and my family, but that's all in the past, I don't want to think about it too much."

United and Ten Hag were open to McTominay's exit several months ago but their stance appears to have changed, in part down to a mounting injury list that has tested their resources. The Dutchman has maintained that there is clearly a future for the Scot at Old Trafford.

"He is Manchester United in everything and in his heart. So he's playing for the badge. He gives his life and when you're coming on and you give this to the team, it tells a lot," he said after his display against Brentford.

Bayern Munich's defensive hunt: Fulham's Joao Palhinha in the spotlight
Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has revealed that the German giants continue to closely monitor Fulham FC's defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha.

"Of course, he's still on our radar. The club worked intensively on Palhinha in the summer. I was there for a bit on the last, strange day of the transfer window. But we can't say yet what will happen. We are generally exploring the market," Freund confirmed to Sport BILD.

Palhinha is rumoured to be just one piece of Bayern Munich's puzzle for the January transfer window, as the club seek to bolster their defensive options. However, the potential deal might hinge on Fulham's asking price. The Bavarians, in need of defensive versatility, appear poised to make strategic investments in their squad. Yet, Palhinha's recent contract extension with Fulham implies that his valuation has surged compared to just a few months ago.

Bayern acknowledge the need for prompt action in the transfer market. The focus extends beyond Palhinha, with Bayern reportedly considering options like Kalvin Phillips, for whom Manchester City demand more than €49million. Scouts are evaluating various defensive midfield prospects on-site, signalling Bayern's proactive approach as they gear up for the upcoming January transfer window.

In this intricate dance of negotiations, Bayern remain agile, with their eye fixed on defensive reinforcements. The journey involves not only potential bids for Palhinha (ruled out at €65million) and Phillips but also the ongoing surveillance of other defensive midfield talents.

Club's board discuss Fulham man in transfer meeting – Marco Silva's side's demands increased
Bayern Munich's supervisory board met this week, alongside manager Thomas Tuchel and Sports Director Christoph Freund to discuss transfers, including Fulham's Joao Palhinha.

That's according to Kicker, relayed by FCB Inside, who say the Portuguese star remains on Bayern's radar as they seek a number six for their squad.

The newspaper reports that Bayern's board met for it's quarterly meeting in Munich on Monday, during which they discussed various topics, including planning for the January transfer window.

A defensive midfielder and a defender are being targeted and Palhinha 'remains a candidate' for the former after their attempts to sign him in the summer.

That deal fell through because Fulham couldn't get a replacement on deadline day, but their interest has remained as Tuchel wants to add a proper holding six to his squad.

Bayern are again looking at him again but also other options as Fulham could demand "more than €70m, more like €75m" for the player after he signed a new deal at Craven Cottage following his failed move in the summer.

Whether that's too much for the German champions after they agreed the €70m deal in the summer is yet to be known and was presumably discussed at the meeting this week.

The fact that transfers was discussed would explain why Freund and Tuchel were at the meeting, even though they don't have a seat on the supervisory board.

They are, though, working on signing possible reinforcements in January and Palhinha may be among them again after the summer drama.

Fulham considering move to sign 20-year-old 'assist machine' in January
Fulham are one of several Premier League clubs who are reportedly interested in signing Juventus winger Samuel Iling-Junior in January.

A report from TEAMTalk lists the Whites as one of four top-flight English clubs monitoring the 20-year-old's situation right now.

There's a glaring issue when it comes to Fulham's team right now and it's scoring goals.

Marco Silva's side have been outscored in the Premier League by every team except Burnley after 12 games.

It has meant after a solid start to the campaign that the Whites currently sit in 16th place and are in real danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.

Silva will be desperate to solve this issue in January and it may explain why Fulham are interested in Samuel Iling-Junior.

The England Under-21 international has previously been described as an 'assist machine' which sounds just like what Fulham need.

Fulham's strikers have been far from prolific this season with Raul Jimenez only securing his first league goal of the campaign last weekend.

Having a player like Iling-Junior on the left wing to swing in pinpoint crosses or beat a full-back and lay on a chance for a forward would be incredibly useful.

Whether a player with as little experience as Iling-Junior is what Fulham need right now is another issue.

Silva currently has the oldest squad in the Premier League and bringing in a player with Champions League experience wouldn't be a bad idea.

Fulham interested in Iling-Junior
The report from TEAMTalk suggests that Fulham, Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa are all watching the young forward.

He looks likely to leave this winter given he's becoming frustrated by a lack of minutes this season.

Iling-Junior has only made four substitute appearances in Serie A during this campaign which is far from ideal for his development.

His contract runs for another 18 months but he's showing no signs of putting pen to paper on an extension so moving him on sooner rather than later is in Juventus's interests.

Fulham may be interested in Iling-Junior given his record at youth level, where he scored 14 goals and provided 15 assists in 58 games for Juve's academy team.

His single goal at senior level came in Serie A against Atalanta last season, although in his only Champions League cameo he did provide an assist against Benfica.

Iling-Junior is very exciting in possession and can bully defenders on his day.

Whether a player with as few minutes this season as Iling-Junior is the right fit for a team low on confidence and lacking goals has to be questioned.

If Fulham stay up, I would aim to bring him in this summer, otherwise, our funds have to be spent on an out-and-out striker in January.

Fulham best youngsters: Generational talent, exciting defender and an award-winner
The west Londoners can boast an academy as good as their capital rivals thanks to the likes of Luke Harris, Luc de Fougerolles and Matt Dibley-Dias

Fulham younger stars are flying high in the Premier League 2 and making the most of a really promising generation of players.

Hayden Mullins's team thrashed Burnley 8-0 in the Premier League Cup last Friday and have not lost since September, leaving them in fourth behind Arsenal, West Ham and leaders Tottenham,

Here, Standard Sport assesses the young Fulham stars for whom there are high hopes.

Luke Harris (midfielder, 18 years old)
Could prove to be the best player to progress through the Fulham academy for a while.

Harris grabbed the attention last year when he scored a hat-trick inside 11 minutes against Newcastle Under-23s.

He made his senior debut for Fulham aged 17 last year in the EFL Cup, and Marco Silva has regularly praised the youngster's development, saying: "He has one thing that is really important in football today - the ability to arrive in the box and score goals."

While still uncapped, he earned a senior Wales call-up in September 2022.

Luc de Fougerolles (defender, 18 years old)
A regular among the Fulham substitutes in their recent Premier League games, his development as a left-back has been a source of excitement at Craven Cottage.

Also adept at centre-back, De Fougerolles was born in London but has opted to represent Canada internationally, with his father having hailed from Montreal.

Last month, he was selected for Canada's senior squad last month but did not make his debut. However, that could change this month, having been selected again for their two Nations League matches against Jamaica.

Matt Dibley-Dias (midfielder, 20 years old)
Born in New Zealand but the grandson of former Brazilian footballer Manoelzinho, who played for Flamengo and Corinthians.

Winner of Fulham's prestigious Johnny Haynes academy player of the year award last season, Dibley-Dias has been tipped to become a first-team player in the coming years.

Is yet to make his senior debut but was named on the bench three times last season, as well for the opening weekend win over Everton this season.

Fulham rival Aston Villa, Tottenham in Samuel Iling-Junior
Fulham are ready to enter the chase for Aston Villa and Tottenham target Samuel Iling-Junior, with Juventus ready to sell.
According to TEAMtalk, Samuel Iling-Junior continues to add to his suitors from the Premier League, with Fulham joining the chase. Aston Villa and Tottenham are already considering moves for the 20-year-old English winger, with Juventus reportedly open to offers.

Samuel Iling-Junior may have made the right decision to move abroad when he chose to leave Chelsea's youth sides and join Juventus. The move paid dividends for the 20-year-old English winger to flourish in a different environment. But his prospects of cementing a place in the first team look slim.

He has made brief appearances since 2020 and has managed to impress with his performances. Massimiliano Allegri has used him on the left-hand side this season as Samuel Iling-Junior made four outings for the side, providing one assist.

As Allegri does not tend to use a system with traditional wingers, he usually deploys players like Iling-Junior in a wing-back role. On that wing, the 20-year-old English winger faces competition from Federico Chiesa and Filip Kostic, making it a daunting task to cement his place in the squad.

With his contract expiring in 2025, Juventus are considering a sale ahead of the January window, with some notable Premier League sides keen on signing him. West Ham United are one of the sides keen, with David Moyes looking at attractive options before the next window opens.

Tottenham have held an interest, and they might carry it forward from last summer. This time around, Spurs might look to approach, as Ange Postecoglou remains keen to add a wide attacker. The prospect of joining the North London side could appeal to the 20-year-old English winger, making Spurs a top contender in this chase.

Aston Villa are also interested, as Unai Emery has been looking for a new winger since the summer despite signing Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen. Much will depend on the price that Juventus could demand for the 20-year-old English winger, which, going by his stature in the squad, might prove efficient enough for Premier League sides like Villa or Spurs.

Now, Fulham have joined the chase for the winger, with Marco Silva equally keen on adding attacking reinforcements to his squad. The Cottagers have made a bad start to their campaign and are thoroughly struggling in the final third.

Someone like Iling-Junior could add some much-needed dynamism that seems missing, with Silva increasingly relying on the ageing Willian on the left side. The Juventus man could bring a new dimension, which could help the Cottagers move forward in their objectives.

There is also less pressure in joining a team like Fulham regarding the hierarchy of football clubs in the Premier League. The Cottagers must fight hard, beat teams like Aston Villa or Tottenham to get through to the player and then negotiate terms with Juventus on the price and other details.

Harry Wilson knew he had to step up for Wales after Gareth Bale retirement
Harry Wilson admits the onus was on him to step out of Gareth Bale's shadow and keep Wales on track for major tournaments.

Boss Rob Page revealed recently he spoke to Wilson last summer and told him he was no longer simply a squad member and that he is a "big player" for Wales.

Wilson responded with a hand in both goals in September's 2-0 win in Latvia, and then scored twice in the stunning 2-1 victory over World Cup semi-finalists Croatia last month.

Those two wins lifted Wales up to second in Group D and they will qualify automatically for Euro 2024 by taking six points from their final two games, away to Armenia on Saturday and at home to Turkey three days later.

"Gaz provided a lot of moments for us on the pitch in times that we needed him," Fulham forward Wilson said of Wales' record scorer Bale, who retired from football in January.

"So for me being an attacking player, I need to start stepping up in those moments, and thankfully I was able to do that in the Croatia game.

"I'm not stupid, I know I wasn't the first on the team sheet because we had Gaz at Real Madrid and 'Rambo' (Aaron Ramsey) at Arsenal and then Juventus.

"They were playing regular football at the top level and it felt like they produced in every game.

"I wasn't happy with that because I wanted to be playing, but now with players leaving, I think there's a spot there for me and I'd like to think that I have stepped up."

Wilson won his 50th cap against Croatia, 10 years to the day since becoming Wales' youngest-ever male player at the age of 16 years and 207 days.

Affectionately known as 'The King of Corwen' by Wales fans, Wilson has also stepped up off the pitch as part of a leadership group.

He said: "It's not just Gaz leaving, Joe (Allen) left as well as a couple of senior players who made sure that the standards are always up there.

"I've gone from maybe one of the younger ones in the squad to being one of the oldest quite quickly.

"We had a little meeting during the last camp that 'Rambo', Ben Davies, Connor Roberts, Ethan Ampadu and myself were in.

"It's a group of lads who want to make sure the standards are set every day, making sure everything is right off the pitch so we can perform on it.

"I'm not the one who's going to be barking orders on the pitch, but I like to lead in a different way and doing stuff right. On the pitch, I want to lead with the ball and try to make stuff happen."

Wales will be looking towards Wilson again as they attempt to reach a fourth major tournament out of five and avenge June's shock 4-2 home defeat to Armenia.

He said: "We know what we did wrong in that game and we know what we've got to do on Saturday to put that right.

"For sure we owe them one. They played a fantastic game, but we also know we weren't at the levels we've been at since. If we can perform like we did against Croatia, I'm pretty confident we can get a result."

Luc de Fougerolles: CanMNT's Newest Starlet?
It is not every day that the CanMNT sees a fresh-faced 18-year-old called up to the senior team. Add the fact that he has already played for English Premier League side Fulham at the senior level despite his age, and more than a few eyebrows might have been raised when Interim Head Coach named Luc de Fougerolles in the squad for the upcoming Nations League Quarter-Final games against Jamaica. But those who have been following this young man's career will know that this call-up is what is to be expected from this exciting young defender.

Luc de Fougerolles: CanMNT's Newest Starlet?
English-Born, Canadian Roots

Luc de Fougerolles was born in London, England, the capital of the country and a city rife with footballing heritage. His father was born in Montreal but raised his sons to love the game as much as the folk around them. He was six years old when he joined Fulham's academy, after impressing some youth scouts with his tenacity despite his diminutive size. He has been in the Fulham system since then, despite having interest from other clubs like Chelsea.

"I've been there my whole life basically, knowing the people there [and] loving it," de Fougerolles said to CBC.ca. And since his young age, he has been impressing those around him in his capability to not only rise to a challenge but to excel at it. A versatile player that can play at center-back, full-back and even midfield, it is no wonder then that he featured for Fulham's U18 side when he was just 15. And not shortly after, he began to feature for the U21 side at the tender age of just 17.

"[His progress] told you he was on the fast track," Steve Wigley, former Fulham under-18 coach and current Fulham academy technical director, remarked to the Athletic. "As he's moved up, his performances have been pretty seamless."

So much so were his performances seamless that it did not take long for him to start to knock at the doors of senior appearances.

First Strides into Professional Football
It began with his first professional contract last April. de Fougerolles was pinned to a permanent deal, amid much fanfare. He was included in a few matchday squads of the first team this season but had to wait until the beginning of this month to have his first full taste of professional football.

Until then, he had been featuring often for Fulham's Premier League 2 side, garnering five appearances across eight matchdays. But on November 1st, in a fourth-round EFL Cup tie, de Fougerolles laced up his shoes for the first time as a senior starter. Fulham ended the victors that evening, winning by the tune of three goals to one. But all eyes were on the young 18-year-old man who had not only put in a full 90-minute shift, but did so convincingly. So convincingly, that he earned the award for Man of the Match on his debut. A stellar sign for future success.

But while it took until this match for many Canadians to take notice of the exciting dual-national coming out of England, those within the Canada Soccer camp have been keeping a close eye on him for some time. Now-Interim Head Coach of the CanMNT Mauro Biello had called on him to feature for the U20 side last year, but a clash with his GCSE exams and later a bout with COVID-19 prevented him from taking up the call. Nevertheless, he was still on Biello's radar, even after getting the senior team job.

The Future of the CanMNT?
Biello called de Fougerolles up for the CanMNT vs Japan camp earlier this fall, a clear sign of intent in testing the young lad while also demonstrating the country's purpose to not let another talented dual-national slip away. And while he did not make an appearance in Canada's disappointing 4-1 loss, watching it idly from the bench, his workrate and intelligence must have impressed Biello enough to call him up once more for this crucial tie against the Reggae Boyz.

"He's done really well," Biello told CBC.ca from Japan this past October. "A young kid, he's blended in. He's brave on the ball, and really confident. He's fearless defensively. It's really good to get him into the environment. He fit right in."

Fulham's Scholar of the Year last year, de Fougerolles clearly shows that his intelligence isn't just limited to what he produces on the pitch. He is a bright young man who comes in at a time when change is coming for the CanMNT. The transition from the old guard to the new crop ahead of the 2026 World Cup is imminent. As former CanMNT Head Coach John Herdman previously stressed, Canada needs to rely on the talented dual-nationals that either have called or can call Canada their home, to continue to evolve and improve ahead of the World's Biggest Stage.

De Fougerolles is still a diamond in the rough at his fledgling age, but he could mark the beginnings of an even brighter future for the CanMNT – if Canada does enough to convince him to be part of it. Time will tell if both paths align and CanMNT fans will get to see his name on the back of the famous Red and White a lot more in the future.

US beats Trinidad 3-0 in 1st leg of Copa América qualifier as Pepi, Robinson and Reyna score late
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The United States had been held even by Trinidad and Tobago into the 82nd minute despite a man advantage, raising the prospect a Copa América berth would depend on a victory next week on the Caribbean island where the U.S.'s 2018 World Cup campaign ended in failure.

"It was just one of them days where it feels like nothing´s going in," Antonee Robinson said.

Ricardo Pepi, Robinson and Gio Reyna then scored in a span of 7 minutes, 23 seconds, leading the U.S. to a 3-0 victory on Thursday night in the opener of a two-leg, total-goals series.

Playing with a man advantage from the 38th minute on, the 11th-ranked U.S. was frustrated for much of the match by the No. 99 Soca Warriors despite 75% possession and a 26-1 advantage in shots.

The second leg of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal is Monday night in Trinidad, where the Americans famously lost 2-1 in October 2017.

"I talked to the team about it being 180-minute game and we´re only halfway done," U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter said after the first competitive match of his second term. "We are in a good position. But crazy things happen. I was on the sideline today thinking this may end 0-0 because of all the chances we were missing, particularly in the second half. But we´re in a decent position."

Pepi entered in the 66th and put the U.S. ahead in the 82nd when, at the flank edge of the 6-yard box, he redirected Robinson's pass past goalkeeper Denizil Smith. Pepi, controversially left off last year's World Cup roster, has 10 goals in 21 international appearances, including five in seven games as a substitute this year.

"Being a Texas boy, it feels like I'm at home," said Pepi, a 20-year-old from El Paso who scored twice on the same field in a 2021 World Cup qualifying win over Jamaica. "There was no way I wasn't going to score here. Just a special moment."

Robinson doubled the lead in the 86th when he collected a failed headed clearance of Reyna's cross by Alvin Jones and his 25-yard left-foot shot deflected off the defender and past Smith's outstretched arm. Robinson did three back flips to celebrate his third goal in 38 appearances.

"Just got excited," Robinson said.

Reyna added his seventh international goal and third in two matches in the 89th when he fed Folarin Balogun, who cushioned a pass that Reyna ran onto for a left-foot shot from the edge of the 6-yard box.

Three days after his 21st birthday, the oft-injured Reyna played his first 90-minute match for club or country since March 2022. It was his third game under Berhalter since a feud between his family and the coach broke out at last year's World Cup, causing Berhalter to lose his job for six months before he was rehired ln June.

Christian Pulisic, Tim Weah and Tyler Adams are missing the matches because of injuries. Kevin Paredes, a 20-year-old forward, made his first international start. Cameron Carter-Vickers made his first U.S. start since the World Cup and was paired in central defense with Tim Ream.

Trinidad played short after Noah Powder, a 25-year-old midfielder from Edison, New Jersey, was ejected for his second yellow card, shown when he swung a leg and tripped Weston McKennie from behind.

Jamaican referee Oshan Nation initially awarded a penalty in the 60th minute when defender Daniel Phillips slid from behind into McKennie in the penalty area, but the call was reversed after a video review by Canadian Drew Fisher.

The second leg will be at Port-of-Spain's Hasely Crawford Stadium, 34 years and one day after Paul Caligiuri's goal there lifted the U.S. to a 1-0 win and the Americans' first World Cup appearance in 40 years. About 20 miles south in Couva, Trinidad beat the U.S. in 2017 and ended the Americans' streak of World Cups at seven.

"We got to keep our foot on the gas," Pepi said.

NOTES: In the night's other first-leg game, Panama won 3-0 at Costa Rica on goals by Michael Murillo in the fourth minute, José Fajardo in the 29th and Cecilio Waterman in the 60th. In Friday's matches, Honduras hosts Mexico and Jamaica is home against Canada.

Mctominay won't come to us.  He refused us in the summer and I can't see anything or anybody changing his mind.

Looks as if we may add to the Mitro money with another £60m in the transfer kitty by selling Palhinha. This season could see us break club records for both sales and purchases.
Lets hope we get the purchases right, we have in the past spent big sums badly.

I really hope he never comes to us. He is one of my least favorite players in the league. Decent enough player skill-wise, but I just can't stand his antics on the field.
