Out of touch?

I was sat in the Stevenage Road stand for last nights game and there was one bloke that literally didn't stop sharing his opinions at the top of his voice for the entire game.

Whether it was the ref, the opposition, Marco or whichever one of our players was involved in the action (or lack of it) he had something derogatory to say.

Their players (in particular Elliott) were C**t's and p****'s, Silva knew nothing, Liverpool is a S**t hole, their fans were bin dippers and our players were all effing hopeless/useless.

It was mildly amusing to begin with, but quickly became tiresome. After 90 minutes, I was almost glad that we hadn't taken it to extra time.

I'm sure we've all had a rant at some point, or dropped a few F bombs whilst supporting Fulham, but this was on a different level - particularly given that this was the family zone.

Am I out of touch or is this part and parcel of a match these days?

Back when I had a season ticket I sat next to one of these guys. Clearly unhappy with life and used football to vent his frustration, I eventually zoned him out. For right or wrong people are more unhappy these days, so you can expect to see more of these types around.

Just tell him to shut up, no need to tut and roll your eyes when you have words. Takes one person to say it, and say nods and agreements from surrounding fans, and that person suddenly feels silly.

Guess he is happy in his misery but unfair that those around have to share with him.
The advantage of the old free standing terraces was that you could move away from such characters.

No, I don't think you're out of touch.  You should have felt comfortable enough to tell him to button it up.  That's what I would have done, and have done at various sporting events in similar situations......

i told a teenager to turn his phone volume off when I was on the bus last week. I was expecting the worst but he apoligised and complied, I was shocked

I think you've every right to ask him to cool things down and to cut out the constant swearing. If I had one of my grandchildren with me I would certainly do so.

Agree with this.. particularly the unhappy with life so venting part. Person ideally needs support and help.

Those sort of verbal fans have always been around. Shouting and swearing and telling players they were rubbish. We all have mumbled and cursed under our breath but most of us know how to behave. I blame the tv and computer age where fans are so used to being in their own bubble. We have lost the art of how to behave in the wild.
