Fulham 3-1 AFC Bournemouth

Rodrigo Muniz now has three goals in his past two appearances for Fulham
Rodrigo Muniz scored twice as Fulham claimed their first Premier League win of 2024 to move above Bournemouth in the table.

The Cottagers dominated the early stages and opened the scoring when Bobby De Cordova-Reid capitalised on a Lewis Cook slip and side-footed into the bottom corner.

Neto produced a brilliant one-handed save to deny the lively Willian soon afterwards, but the Cherries goalkeeper was powerless to stop Muniz doubling Fulham's lead from De Cordova-Reid's downward header.

Marcos Senesi's sublime turn and finish halved the deficit early in the second half, only for Fulham to restore their two-goal advantage when Muniz met Willian's far-post delivery two minutes later.

Dominic Solanke wasted the best of several good Bournemouth opportunities before half-time, side-footing over the bar when unmarked before Fulham's second of the game.

Marco Silva's side climb above Bournemouth into 12th, dropping the Cherries to 13th.

Willian and Muniz key for Cottagers
Fulham had earned only one win from seven league fixtures since registering back-to-back 5-0 victories in early December, but they made the perfect start against the Cherries.

The hosts were given an early helping hand by Cook, but their passing in the build-up to De Cordova-Reid's finish was crisp, and Willian's superb one-two with Tom Cairney almost resulted in a second goal for Silva's side inside 10 minutes.

The former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder was heavily involved in Fulham's second, his inswinging cross headed back across goal by Cordova-Reid for Muniz to prod home his second goal in as many league appearances.

Bournemouth had been starting to establish a foothold prior to Muniz's effort, but more fine work from Willian almost led to a third Fulham goal before half-time when Antonee Robinson shot straight at Neto from the Brazilian's pass.

Willian then stung Neto's palms with a low drive after cutting inside from the right, before another magnificent delivery - two minutes after Senesi had given Bournemouth hope - teed up Muniz for the Cottagers' third of the afternoon.

There were standing ovations for Willian and Muniz when they were substituted late in the second half, as Fulham fans celebrated their first Premier League triumph since beating Arsenal 2-1 on 31 December.

Bournemouth pay for slow start
Bournemouth's home victory over Fulham on 26 December stretched their unbeaten top-flight run to seven matches, but that 3-0 triumph remains their most recent league win.

They scored early in recent draws against West Ham and Nottingham Forest but started slowly at Craven Cottage and were indebted to Neto for preventing Willian from doubling Fulham's lead.

Solanke, who had scored in each of his past five appearances against the Cottagers, should have fired the visitors level from a Marcus Tavernier corner - and it proved a costly miss as Muniz struck five minutes later.

Luis Sinisterra - who kept Fulham right-back Timothy Castagne on his toes in the first half - tested Bernd Leno with a fierce strike from the edge of the area with the score at 1-0, while Alex Scott drilled narrowly wide not long after Muniz's first.

Bournemouth kept pushing in the second half - even after Muniz had restored Fulham's two-goal lead - and ended the match with 25 shots and 14 corners to their name.

But the Cherries paid dearly for their poor start as they suffered their first away league defeat by the west London club since April 1992.

Marco's Post-Bournemouth press conference

Marco Silva addressed the media following his side's 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

"Great win for us, definitely," Marco began. "Important one and well deserved I think.

"Overall looking for the game, I think we were the best team on the pitch."

Marco offered a deep—dive into Fulham's performance, stating: "Overall looking for the game, I think we were the best team on the pitch.  We were much better in the first half.

"The reaction from Bournemouth in the second half was really good.

"The way we played first half, the way we scored two goals.

"We created more chances, we had one with Willian as well, the one-v-one with Neto, the one with Robinson as well.

"We created more chances to score more goals and kill the game.

"The first goal from them could have boosted their confidence of course and ccreated a different scenario for us.

"It was crucial that we scored the third goal straight away. It was a great assist from Willian, great finishing from Rodrigo as well.

"I would like to control the ball a lot more in the second-half but it was not possible. Credit to Bournemouth as well."

The man of the moment was of course, Rodrigo Muniz, who followed up his first Premier League goal last week by scoring a double against Bournemouth.

"I'm really pleased for him," said Marco. "He deserves this.

"When you have the chance to step in, you have to pop up. When the chance is there, you have to show your quality.

"The performance this afternoon was probably his best so far in a Fulham shirt. He deserves it, he's been working really hard.

"It's important now that he keeps working hard and for myself, it's important that I keep developing him as a football player."

A lot of the questions in the press conference centred around Armando Broja, who started from the bench this afternoon, with Rodrigo given the nod ahead of our new number nine following his goal last weekend.

When asked whether this was a good test for Armando to fight for his place, Marco responded: "I spoke with him about this situation yesterday. This is the Premier League.

"It's important to have him with us. He's a player we looked at last summer as well.

"He knows being in the Premier League that he is going to have competition for places.

"He arrived only last week and against Burnley, another striker scored an important goal and had a good impact on that game.

"If Rodrigo is going to have another good week and Armando is going to have another good week, then it's perfect for us.

"Football players are not stupid. They can understand decisions and one way you can deal with the situation is to work hard and show that they are better than the others who are playing."

Fulham 3-1 Bournemouth: Rodrigo Muniz bags brace in Premier League victory
Marco Silva's decision pays off

Muniz scored twice for the Cottagers
Action Images via Reuters

Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz scored a brace as Fulham beat Bournemouth.

Muniz was given the nod over January loan signing Armando Broja and scored twice, while Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Cherries defender Marcos Senesi also got in on the act.

Muniz, who scored his first-ever Premier League goal in last week's 2-2 draw with Burnley, looked bright from the start during the victory for the west Londoners.

The Brazilian jinked past three defenders - showing exceptional ball control - before being brought down on the edge of Bournemouth's area.

Marco Silva's decision to start Muniz continued to pay off into the fifth minute when he was heavily involved with Fulham's opening goal.

The tenacious striker evaded his marker down the right channel before his driven cross, which seemed routine for Lewis Cook to clear, caused the midfielder to slip, allowing De Cordova-Reid to power home from close range.

Tom Cairney recovered after taking a ball to the face and seemed unfazed when he performed a neat turn on halfway, unleashing Antonee Robinson, who was denied by goalkeeper Neto after an impressive reaction save at his left-hand post.

Muniz's electric start reached another level when he poached Fulham's second of the match, nine minutes before the break.

Willian lofted a cross to De Cordova-Reid at the back post, who turned creator by nodding his effort into the danger zone. The potent Muniz started behind the defender but reacted quickest and scored from inside the six-yard area with a roofed finish.

Bournemouth needed a response and they got just that - five minutes into the second half - when Senesi pulled one back for the visitors.

Marcus Tavernier's corner was knocked down by Dominic Solanke before centre-back Senesi showed fantastic composure to control the ball and score on the half-volley to reduce the deficit.

But just two minutes later, Fulham responded in fashion when Muniz grabbed his second of the match.

Experienced technician Willian floated a similar cross to that of the second goal. But this time the unmarked Muniz drifted to the back post before his first-time strike smashed into the net and past the helpless Neto.

Broja came off the bench and looked to stamp his authority on the game. The Chelsea youth prospect hustled the back four and won a corner after the visitors were forced to cut out his dangerous pass into the box.

Bournemouth searched for a late fightback but the Cottagers held on through seven added minutes to leapfrog their opponents into 12th.

Fulham 3-1 Bournemouth: Rodrigo Muniz at the double as Marco Silva's side claim their first Premier League win of 2024 at Craven Cottage

Brazilian striker Rodrigo Muniz bagged a brace and an assist for Fulham
Bobby Decordova-Reid also netted while Marcos Senesi scored for the Cherries

The brass band playing Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! outside of Craven Cottage had to stop when the arrival of Bournemouth's team bus interrupted their tribute to ABBA. It did not take long for the visitors to discover that Marco Silva's Fulham would not be silenced so easily.

This was a commanding showing from the Cottagers, enough to make you wonder where they have been hiding amid a mediocre run of results in the Premier League.

Rodrigo Muniz got two of Fulham's goals – the 22-year-old Brazilian continuing to up his game since the loan signing of another striker in Armando Broja – after Bobby De Cordova-Reid opened the scoring early.

Broja made his home debut from the bench as Fulham saw out this win, but at this rate, he will struggle to start ahead of Muniz.

'This was probably his best performance so far in a Fulham shirt,' Silva said of Muniz. 'If the chances are there, you have to show your quality.'

Fulham's Brazilian striker Rodrigo Muniz finished off his day with a well-taken second goal

The youngester's brace brings his goal total to three in the Premier League this season, while Bobby Decordova-Reid also scored

Bournemouth battled but Fulham mostly ran the show as Andoni Iraola's side fell to their fifth consecutive defeat

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola added: 'We should have scored more, but we didn't.'

Fulham scored after Muniz's pass from the right-hand side was intercepted by Lewis Cook but a slip from Bournemouth midfielder allowed De Cordova-Reid to bury the ball in the bottom corner.

Fulham should have added to their advantage long before they did, with Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto denying Willian after a fine one-two with Tom Cairney and then saving Illya Zabarnyi from the indignity of an own goal.

How Dominic Solanke did not bury one Bournemouth corner, only he knows. It was a cute routine as Lloyd Kelly used his body to block Antonee Robinson, Fulham's player at the front post. Unable to clear the cross, Solanke ghosted in behind Robinson, but the striker with 13 Premier League goals scuffed the finish.

Instead, Fulham made it 2-0 before half-time when De Cordova-Reid headed the ball back into the six-yard box for Muniz to stab home.

Marco Silva's side have been in indifferent form so far these season, but put in a commanding display at Craven Cottage

Marcos Senesi added what proved to be a consolation for Bournemouth just after half-time

It became 2-1 in the 50th minute after a beautiful touch, turn and finish from Marcos Senesi. But Fulham struck back in the 52nd, making it 3-1 with Muniz tapping in Willian's cross.

Bournemouth tried to get back into the game – one acrobatic overhead kick from Solanke narrowly landing over – but this was Fulham's day.

Two for Muniz as Fulham beat Bournemouth

Fulham 3-1 Bournemouth
Rodrigo Muniz scored twice in a resounding win for Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid capitalised on a Lewis Cook mistake to give the Whites an early lead.

And Muniz – clearly determined to impress following the recent arrival of fellow forward Armando Broja – made it 2-0 by firing home after being teed up by De Cordova-Reid's header down.

Marcos Senesi turned and finished to half the lead in the second half and give Bournemouth hope.

But Muniz struck again soon afterwards, this time with a header from Willian's cross.

The win moved Fulham up to 12th in the Premier League table.

Fulham: Leno, Castagne, Diop, Ream, Robinson, Palhinha, Cairney (Reed 63), De Cordova-Reid (Wilson 64), Pereira (Ballo-Toure 85), Willian (Traore 85), Muniz (Broja 85).

Fulham's Tactical Triumph Over Bournemouth

Fulham's Premier League Ascent: A Tale of Two Strikers
In a thrilling encounter that redefined the middle of the Premier League table, Fulham soared past Bournemouth, securing a much-needed victory to commence 2024's winning account. This result, a testament to their resilience, catapulted them above their rivals in the standings.

Muniz's Magic: Fulham's New Hero
Rodrigo Muniz emerged as the star of the show, netting twice to become the fulcrum of Fulham's attacking prowess. His performance was not just about scoring; it was a display of tactical intelligence and sharp finishing that left Bournemouth's defence in tatters. Muniz's brace symbolised Fulham's intent and capability, bringing a new dawn to their Premier League journey.

Early Dominance and Clinical Finishing
Fulham's dominance was evident from the get-go. Bobby De Cordova-Reid, capitalising on a rare slip by Lewis Cook, found the net with a precision that set the tone for the rest of the match. Bournemouth's Neto, despite a spectacular one-handed save to deny Willian, could do little to prevent Muniz from doubling Fulham's advantage, a moment of sheer brilliance that was a joy to behold.

Bournemouth's Brief Comeback and Fulham's Swift Response
The Cherries did find a glimmer of hope in Marcos Senesi's exquisite finish early in the second half, cutting the deficit and briefly threatening a comeback. However, Fulham, unwavering in their resolve, swiftly restored their two-goal cushion. Muniz, once again, was at the heart of this resurgence, meeting Willian's impeccable delivery to seal the victory.

Willian's Wizardry: A Driving Force for Fulham
Willian's impact cannot be understated. His involvement in key moments, including a dazzling one-two with Tom Cairney and a series of penetrating passes and crosses, was crucial. His chemistry with Muniz and their combined threat were instrumental in Fulham's offensive strategy.

Climbing the Premier League Ladder
This victory is more than just three points for Marco Silva's team. It's a statement of intent and a demonstration of their potential in the Premier League. Climbing to 12th, above Bournemouth, Fulham has reignited their season, offering a promise of exciting times ahead.

Muniz scores again as Fulham beats Bournemouth 3-1 to claim first Premier League win of 2024
LONDON (AP) - Rodrigo Muniz scored a brace as Fulham claimed its first Premier League win of the year with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Silva hails Muniz as Broja is forced to bide his time
Marco Silva hailed Rodrigo Muniz after Fulham's win over Bournemouth – and suggested Armando Broja will have to keep biding his time.

Muniz appeared to be surplus to requirements following the recent signing of fellow striker Broja on loan from Chelsea.

Instead, he has scored three times in two matches – including a brace in the 3-1 victory against the Cherries – with Broja waiting on the bench.

Whites boss Silva said: "I'm really pleased for him. He deserves this.

"When you have the chance to step in, you have to pop up. When the chance is there, you have to show your quality.

"The performance this afternoon was probably his best so far in a Fulham shirt.

"It's important now that he keeps working hard and it's important that I keep developing him as a football player."

Broja had to wait until the 75th minute for his introduction, having entered the fray around the same time of last weekend's draw at Burnley.

Silva explained: "I spoke with him about this situation yesterday. This is the Premier League.

"It's important to have him with us. He's a player we looked at last summer as well.

"He knows being in the Premier League that he is going to have competition for places.

Liverpool 'are monitoring Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo ahead of potential free transfer' as the Reds 'need English players to meet UEFA quota in Champions League'

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo
The Reds could move for him on a free transfer, with AC Milan also interested

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Tosin Adarabioyo ahead of a potential move in the summer, with the Fulham defender potentially being available on a free transfer.

Adarabioyo has been one of the Cottagers' stand-out performers since their return to the Premier League last season.

Despite their impressive performances and standing in the Premier League for a second successive season, Adarabioyo is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at Craven Cottage and could leave on a free transfer this summer.

As reported by The Standard, Adarabioyo has attracted interest from Liverpool ahead of the summer but AC Milan are also in the running for his signature.

The report continues to state that Jurgen Klopp's side 'need English players to meet their UEFA quota for homegrown players in the Champions League next season'.

Despite not qualifying for the Champions League last season, Liverpool sit top of the Premier League and are looking like they will return to Europe's elite competition next season.

They will be without Klopp, who announced his decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season, as a rebuild will continue without the German.

Joel Matip has been sidelined with a knee injury for the majority of the season, and is out of contract in the summer.

Virgil van Dijk has previously hinted at a potential Anfield exit when Klopp departs at the end of the season, but has recently rebuffed such claims.

'It's been taken out of context. To be 100 per cent clear, I am fully committed to the club,' he said.

'I love the club. I love the fans. [That comment] has fully been taken out of context. It's not about me. It's not about 'I', it's about 'us'. Nothing has changed.

'Five days ago we weren't even speaking about my contract so it's a bit silly. My full focus is on making sure this year is a very special year.'

With Joe Gomez the latest casualty, Jarell Quansah has been trusted in the centre of Liverpool's defence alongside Van Dijk.

It appears that Adarabioyo could help fill the gap in defence at Anfield, with it unclear as to who will be named as Klopp's successor.

Muniz brushes Bournemouth aside
Like London buses, you wait ages for a Rodrigo Muniz Premier League goal and then they come along all at once. The Brazilian striker was perhaps the only Fulham player who came out of last weekend's collapse at Burnley in credit, given the way he gave the Whites a commanding lead they later squandered, but he produced a brilliant brace to brush Bournemouth aside and prove that manager Marco Silva's faith was well founded.

Muniz was an impulse buy at the start of Silva's Craven Cottage tenure two years ago and, had a couple of clubs from his homeland been a little braver with their bids last month, he might not have even been amongst Fulham's striking options this afternoon. His English career has been something of a slow burner, initially as underemployed understudy to Aleksandar Mitrovic, and then as a bit-part performer who fell out of favour after a managerial change at Middlesbrough on loan, who was swiftly usurped by Raul Jimenez. But Jimenez's hamstring strain and the late arrival of Armando Broja from Chelsea on deadline day, gave Muniz another opportunity that he has seized ruthlessly.

His predatory instincts put clear water between the Whites and Bournemouth here just when it looked as if the Cherries might become the second side to fightback from 2-0 down against Fulham in the space of seven days. The hosts raced out of the traps, eager to make up for letting two points slip through their grasp at Turf Moor, and took the lead after only five minutes. Muniz sped eagerly along the right flank but his cross seemed set to be intercepted by Lewis Cook. The midfielder's untimely slip gave Bobby De Cordova-Reid a glimpse of goal and the Jamaican international rifled a resounding shot into the bottom corner to ease any nerves around Craven Cottage.

It could easily have been two five minutes later. Tom Cairney, restored to the starting line-up in place of Harrison Reed, worked an opening with Willian but the Brazilian's shot was palmed aside by Neto. Cairney was soon struck in the face by a powerful Bournemouth free-kick but made light of his discomfort to control proceedings from the middle of the park. The Scottish midfielder was involved in a sweeping move that saw Timothy Castagne switch the play across the pitch to Antonee Robinson but the left back's dangerous cross just evaded the best efforts of Muniz.

Bournemouth were far from passengers and Andoni Irola's side fashioned several chances to draw level. Luis Sinisterra, who turned his loan from Leeds into a permanent move earlier this week, almost surprised Bernd Leno at his near post with a ferocious drive before Dominic Solanke almost punished some poor poor marking from the subsequent corner only to his sky his shot over the bar at the near post.

The Whites made their visitors' pay for Solanke's uncharacteristic prolificacy. Muniz produced a clever finish, lifting the ball impudently over a helpless Neto from close range to make it 2-0 after De Cordova-Reid had headed a deep cross from Willian towards goal. That gave Silva's side a platform to build upon, although Alex Scott – whose dynamic display on Boxing Day punished a feeble Fulham showing – slammed a long-range shot wide of Bernd Leno's goal. The home side could have gone even further in front before half time but Willian saw an audacious effort from an acute angle thwarted by Neto after excellent interplay with Robinson.

The Cherries came out on the front foot after the interval and – after Neto had foiled a Willian shot from the edge of the area – forced their way back into the contest five minutes into the second half. Solanke nodded down a corner and centre back Marcos Senesi fired home the loose ball. The goal survived a VAR check for a foul on Bernd Leno, which incensed the Fulham goalkeeper, although their anger was shortlived. Muniz pounced within seconds, ghosting away from a couple of Bournemouth defenders to lash home a lovely Willian cross at the back post.

Fulham set back after restoring their two-goal cushion and Bournemouth, to their great credit, kept pushing until the end. Solanke saw a bicycle kick deflected onto the roof of the net and his physical presence was to the fore as Bournemouth piled on the pressure from a succession of late corners. He headed over from one dangerous delivery before Dango Ouattara skipped around Leno with Castagne on hand to clear from inside his own six yard box.

Relief rather than rapture was the overriding emotion at full time as Silva's side battled to a first league win of 2024. They made heavy weather of it – but Muniz, something of a Craven Cottage cult hero, had also made his point, which might leave Broja waiting a little longer for a starting opportunity at his new club.

Silva savours Muniz's 'best Fulham performance'
Marco Silva hailed matchwinner Rodrigo Muniz's superb display against Bournemouth this afternoon as the striker's "best performance in a Fulham shirt".

The Brazilian striker played a part in Bobby De Cordova-Reid's opener before bagging a brace only seven days after breaking his Premier League duck at Burnley.

A delighted Silva told his post-match press conference:

"I'm really pleased for him and he really deserves it. When you have the chance, you have to step in and pop up and show your quality and it was the moment for Rodrigo to do it. This afternoon was probably his best performance in a Fulham shirt and he deserves it because he's worked really hard.

He had a good pre-season followed by a bad injury, but now he's coming back and he's fighting for what he wants and he's showing the desire to play as the Fulham striker. The way he linked our game and played behind the pressure of the midfielders was really good."

Another loan off to terrible start as Brazilian forward finds his feet at the worst time for Chelsea
Chelsea wanted to sell Armando Broja in January, that much was made clear by various briefings.

In the end they had to settle for a loan to Fulham, hoping that by getting him playing (and hopefully scoring) regularly in the Premier League they could boost his value for a summer sale.

Sadly for all involved, it's been the worst possible start for this move. The Whites wanted him in because Rodrigo Muniz just wasn't finding the net with any regularity. But the Brazilian scored in first game following Broja's arrival, and has now just scored in the second too.

Broja is left stuck on the bench, just where he was at Chelsea.

There's still time to turn things around, but so far so bad for yet another loan in a season which has seen almost all of them backfire. If he wants to make a success of it, he needs to get on the pitch and start scoring immediately.
