He would but only because  his team would have the ball more and therefore not need to tackle as much.

Yep. It is a small club thing, and a reputation thing - like the absolutely nonsense one he got against Fernandes that should have been the other way around. You can see it in the stats, he's treated unlike anyone else.

Compare the amount of fouls - https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/fouls

With yellows - https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/yellow_card

Joao gets a yellow for every 3 fouls.

Looking at the big sides DM and/or highest fouls:
  • Liverpool, ratio of yellows to foulds is Mac Allister 1:7 and Endo 1:4
  • City, Rodri is 1:4 (always hugely cynical fouls stopping counters)
  • Arsenal, Rice is 1:7 and Havertz is 1:4.5
  • Villa, Douglas Luis is 1:4
  • Spurs, Udogie 1:9 and Bissouma 1:4
  • Man U, Fernandes 1:5 and Casimero 1:5
  • Chelsea, Gallagher is 1:11.5!!!! and Caicedo is 1:5

But the mad thing is even at other 'smaller' clubs, DMs who make loads of tackles don't get anywhere near the same treatment.

Although yellows are not supposed to be a punishment for cumulative fouls. The nature of the tackles should matter, not the number.

For the above to clearly reflect an unfair treatment, we would have to assume that fouls are equally bad, but that doesn't have to be the case at all.

I do agree however that Palhinha has gotten a lot of undeserved yellows, but also many deserved ones (the one last week for example).
