Socceroos legend Mark Schwarzer opens up about the lie that ended his Premier League career

Aussie great played 366 games for Middlesborough
Joined Leicester City in 2015 from Chelsea
Retired in 2016 after a stellar career

Socceroos legend Mark Schwarzer has recalled the brutal lie which saw his time in the Premier League end on a sour note.

The year was 2015 and Schwarzer had just secured a move to Leicester City from Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

Foxes manager Nigel Pearson promised the veteran shot-stopper he would be given an opportunity between the sticks as first-choice gloveman Kasper Schmeichel was injured.

'That's why I made the decision to go to Leicester,' he told Optus Sport.

'Unfortunately for me, I was told a lie ... I [eventually] confronted Nigel Pearson about it, which he wasn't too pleased about.

Socceroos legend Mark Schwarzer has recalled the brutal lie which saw his time in the Premier League end on a sour note (pictured, playing for Leicester against Manchester United)

Schwarzer joined the Foxes from Chelsea, where he was the understudy to Petr Cech (left)

'I was told two days before a game against Hull City at home that if I played well, I'd keep my spot.

'We played well, drew 0-0, and I made a big one-on-one save at the death of the game [to earn us a point].

'Nigel [even] said I played well, [but the] next game I was dropped with no words spoken to me.'

Schwarzer admits at the time he was seething at Pearson and 'not the professional' he prided himself on being.

And even when Leicester - under a new manager in Claudio Ranieri - won the Premier League the following season in fairytale fashion, the Socceroos great didn't feel a true part of the celebrations.

Now a respected football pundit, Schwarzer maintains he was deceived by then Leicester manager Nigel Pearson

'I'm not a Premier League winner,' he said.

'Yes, I was at Chelsea and then Leicester when they both won, but I wasn't a central figure.

'In my eyes, I had a front-row seat [on the bench] for both titles.'

In a decorated career, Schwarzer played at two World Cups for Australia and also is a club legend at Middlesbrough, who he chalked up 366 appearances between 1997 and 2008.

He remains a popular figure at Fulham following his five-year stint at the London club after first emerging as a teenager at Marconi in the old National Soccer League from 1990 onwards.

Schwarzer is best known for his two saves in the penalty shootout win over Uruguay in November of 2005, which saw the Socceroos qualify for the World Cup in Germany the following year, ending 32 years of heartache for football fans.

Armando Broja should be a bit annoyed at former Chelsea man for his struggles since moving to Fulham
Chelsea loaned Armando Broja to Fulham during the January transfer window.

Armando Broja would have been hoping to get more game time at Craven Cottage than what he was receiving at Stamford Bridge.

However, things have not exactly turned out that way. The striker is actually yet to start a game for Fulham.

Marco Silva has opted to go with Rodrigo Muniz up front instead, with the 22-year-old now his first-choice No.9.

If it were not for one former Chelsea player, though, Muniz may not even be at Fulham right now.

According to the Evening Standard, Filipe Luis actually talked Muniz out of moving to Saudi Arabia when the two were still playing together at Flamengo.

Armando Broja must be really frustrated with Fulham loan
Broja probably did not expect to join Fulham and then automatically walk into their team. That is not how football works.

However, for the Albania international not to have started a match by March is disappointing.

He must be annoyed with his current situation and Muniz, whose move to Fulham looks partly down to Filipe Luis.

Muniz has been in red-hot form, recently scoring two goals against Tottenham Hotspur.

It would now be a surprise if Fulham signed Broja permanently. Earlier this month, it was already being reported that the Cottagers were considering signing Al-Shabab's Habib Diallo as an alternative to Broja because of Chelsea's high valuation.

The above does not mean Broja will be staying at Stamford Bridge in the summer, though. Right now, Nicolas Jackson is the first-choice No.9 at Chelsea and the club could yet strengthen in that position, leaving little room for their academy graduate.

It has been claimed, for example, that Chelsea scouts have now advised that a deal is struck with RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko. The arrival of the 20-year-old or another striker will probably spell the end of Broja's Chelsea career, if it is not over already.

Lozano leaves Jiménez at Fulham as Mexico seek first Nations League title
March 20 – Mexico coach Jaime Lozano (pictured) has left Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez off his Concacaf Nations League roster as the country bids to win the event for the first time in its third edition.

Jiménez is recovering from injury and has only just returned for Fulham. The feeling was that his rehabilitation would be better suited to staying with his club as Mexico build towards to the Copa America 2024 to be played in the US this summer.

In 2019 Mexico lost in the final to the USA, while in 2023 they lost their semi-final against USA, but won the third place match against Panama.

Mexico face Panama again in the 2024 semi-final with Lozano likely to start up front with Henry Martin (Club América), and PSV's Hirving Lozano.

Mexico beat Panama 1-0 in the final of the 2023 Gold Cup with a goal by Santiago Giménez. The young Feyenoord striker has still to earn a starting place but has been in sparkling form for his club with 36 goals in 57 matches.

But with Lozano opting for experience over youth in his squad selection, it is unclear whether he is ready to give Gimenez a start just yet. Mexico will continue to rely on veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa to lead the team, backed up by West Ham's Edson Alvarez.

Liverpool and Man City have initiated contact with 26-year-old Premier League defender
Since the beginning of the 2023 summer transfer window, Liverpool have been interested in bringing a left-sided defender into the lineup.

The Reds are eyeing a move for Antonee Robinson of Fulham as they aim to strengthen their defendse in the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old is at the ideal age to help the Reds achieve their goals in the upcoming seasons.

With questions surrounding Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, the summer transfer window of 2024 may be his opportunity to join the Anfield club.

Liverpool have identified Robinson as a summer target
A number of top English teams are interested in signing American left-back Robinson.

The defender has caught the eye of Liverpool and Manchester City and both of them have made contact with his representatives and registered their interest in signing him.

According to AS Roma Live, Robinson's current club, Fulham, have placed the asking price at £35 million.

It appears that communication has already been established with the player's entourage.

Liverpool and Man City, two teams well-known for their financial clout in the transfer market, are still interested despite this valuation.

Leading Premier League teams are taking notice of Robinson's outstanding performances.

Both the Premier League giants, Liverpool and Man City, are looking to sign a left-back in the transfer window.

Man City have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Robinson
Guardiola has often had to use a centre-back in the left-back position and now he is keen to add a specialist to the starting line-up.

The 26-year-old, who is renowned for his pace, defensive tenacity, and offensive ability, has distinguished himself as a notable player in the Premier League this season.

It's unclear which team will sign Robinson because both the Premier League clubs can afford Fulham's asking price.

The London club would find it difficult to keep a hold of him in the summer with two of the best teams around interested in him.

Liverpool hold talks to sign Antonee Robinson this summer
Liverpool have already held initial talks to sign Fulham star Antonee Robinson this summer, as per the Italian outlet AS Roma Live.

The Merseyside club have struggled with their left-back issues this season as both Andy Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas have missed a large part of this season due to their respective injury problems.

So, it has been suggested that the Reds could look to reinforce their backline by signing a new left-back this summer with Robinson now emerging as a serious option.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign this term and he showcased his qualities against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend – where he played a key role in helping his side win the game.

According to the report by AS Roma Live, Robinson has attracted the attention of several big English clubs in recent times with Liverpool among those to have registered their interest.

Robinson to Liverpool
The report further claims that the Merseyside club have already held talks with the player's representatives before making a potential swoop this summer.

The Italian outlet states that Fulham could demand a fee of around £35m if they are forced to cash-in and the price tag won't be an issue for Liverpool to lure him to Anfield this summer.

However, the report says that Manchester City are also keen on purchasing him so Liverpool are set to face tough competition from the Citizens in getting any potential deal done for the 26-year-old.

Robinson is an energetic left-back and is pretty similar to Robertson. So, the American international would be an excellent signing for Liverpool if they purchase him.

However, Liverpool are set to commence a new chapter from next season as Jurgen Klopp is going to step down from his managerial role at the end of this campaign. So, it remains to be seen whether the new manager wants to sign Robinson to reinforce the backline in the upcoming transfer window.

Meanwhile, following a disappointing defeat against Manchester United last weekend, Liverpool have now been knocked out of the F.A Cup. Therefore, Klopp's side's hope of winning a quadruple has been demolished so, they will now be focusing on winning the league and Europa League having already won the EFL Cup this season.

Fulham could consider Birmingham City alternative if Blackburn Rovers chase proves costly: View
Fulham should consider Jay Stansfield as they are linked with a move for Blackburn Rovers' Sammie Szmodics.

Sammie Szmodics impresses at Blackburn with 21 league goals, attracting interest from Fulham, Brentford, & Luton.
Fulham watches Szmodics, but already has promising talent in Jay Stansfield, a goal-scoring threat on loan at Birmingham.
Developing Stansfield may be a smarter move for Fulham, who would avoid high fees for Szmodics and secure a young future scorer.

It looks as though Blackburn Rovers not only have a fight on their hands to retain their Championship status but also face the prospect of losing star man Sammie Szmodics this summer.

Szmodics has been in sensational form this season for the Lancashire outfit, with him so far scoring 21 goals in 36 league appearances.

That form has made him Blackburn's main scoring threat after the departure of Ben Brereton Diaz in the summer, but it hasn't stopped the club from being dragged into a relegation battle.

So, while in recent days and weeks talk has turned to what teams are being linked with Szmodics, Blackburn will be firmly focused on what is happening on the pitch as they try to stay above that dotted line.

However, Rovers will be concerned as the attacker continues to impress in the league, and therefore, more teams are being mentioned with interest, with Premier League side Fulham the latest name to emerge.

Fulham join Sammie Szmodics race
According to a report from journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon account, Blackburn Rovers forward Sammie Szmodics has now emerged on the radar of Fulham.

The Premier League side will soon start to plan for next season, as they are not going to be relegated but also look too far away to mount any challenge for a European spot.

This report states that the Cottagers sent scout Brian Talbot to watch Szmodics in action the weekend before last, as he scored his 21st Championship goal of the season in a 1-1 draw at Ewood Park with Plymouth Argyle.

However, Fulham aren't the only side interested in the 28-year-old, with it being reported by Nixon previously that Brentford and Luton Town are also keen on the player.

It is believed that Blackburn could be demanding a large fee for Szmodics should they remain in the Championship, so instead of competing with Brentford and Luton and paying too much money, Fulham should consider Jay Stansfield as an alternative.

Fulham should consider Jay Stansfield as a Sammie Szmodics alternative
It may be forgotten that Fulham already have Jay Stansfield on their books; it is just that the striker was shipped out on loan in the summer to Birmingham City.

The 21-year-old has been with the Cottagers since 2019, when he joined the club's academy from Exeter City.

The young forward has scored goals for fun in the club's academy, but this season and last, Stansfield has shown his capabilities in first-team football.

Last season, Stansfield returned to Exeter on loan and scored nine goals and recorded seven assists, while so far this season, the forward has scored nine goals and chipped in with two assists in 35 Championship appearances.

Jay Stansfield's 2023/24 Championship stats for Birmingham City    Total
Matches played    35
Minutes per game    76
Goals    9
xG    6.82
Scoring frequency    297 mins
Assists    2
xA    1.80
Big chances created    6
Touches    25.5
Average rating    6.79
As per Sofascore.com (As it stands on the 19th of March)

Stansfield has excelled once again while on loan at Birmingham, with the striker outperforming his xG, which is currently 6.82 and is averaging a goal every 297 minutes of football, as per Sofascore.com.

The forward has been the Blues' main threat going forward, averaging 2.3 shots per game, but has missed six big chances for the team.

But Stansfield has been creative as well, providing six big chances for his teammates, which has helped him collect 0.9 key passes and two assists.

Obviously, the striker hasn't been as prolific as Szmodics this season, but Stansfield is very highly rated in the game, and you just wonder whether Fulham would be wiser at putting time and development into Stansfield's career than maybe signing a player like Szmodics, who is 28.

Stansfield has all the makings to go to the very top of the game, and instead of buying a player like Szmodics, who is 28, Fulham would be wiser to develop a player like Stansfield, who can be their striker for the next five or six years.

Furthermore, Blackburn are likely going to want a high fee for Szmodics, and Fulham would be silly to pay that given it is off the back of one good season and it may not be reproduced in the Premier League. Birmingham will obviously be disappointed that they will lose Stansfield, but the chances of keeping him again next season are very slim, given their performances this season.

Report – Liverpool would be ready to pay £35m to sign star, open to Anfield move
Liverpool are linked with a number of left backs and once again, the name of Antonee Robinson is in the focus.

Back in December last year, when Robbo and Tsimikas were out injured, the Reds reached out to Fulham to discuss a move for the American, who is open to moving to Anfield (90min).

More recently, reports have indicated that Liverpool would be ready to pay £35m, around 40 million euros, to sign the fullback.

According to a story published by AS Roma Live yesterday, Liverpool and Man City have already contacted the player's representatives.

The Cottagers are looking for a new left back as the Reds and the Sky Blues are pushing to lure Robinson in the summer.

The news source have mentioned that Liverpool would have no problem meeting the asking fee of £35m to get the signing done.

Robinson has played over 100 games for Fulham and has ample Premier League experience under his belt. Moreover, he has earned 39 caps for the US.

In the current campaign, so far, the 26-year-old has made 28 appearances in the league and provided 6 assists for the London club.

He set up a goal at Anfield earlier in the campaign and last weekend, he provided an assist in Fulham's 3-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Merseysiders have multiple quality options in the LB position, in such a situation, do you think they need to sign a left back in the summer?

Brazil star Andreas Pereira aims trophyless dig at England ahead of Wembley showdown as Fulham man denies there is a 'gap' between the two teams

Andreas Pereira has taken aim at England's lack of trophies ahead of Saturday's friendly with Brazil at Wembley Stadium.

England to host Brazil at Wembley
    Pereira back in Brazil squad
    Aims dig at Three Lions

WHAT HAPPENED?

Fulham star Pereira is celebrating being back in the Brazil squad for the first time in six years and is targeting victory in his team's next game against England. Brazil are under new management after appointing Dorival Junior as coach and he will be hoping to mould a squad capable of winning the Copa America in the summer.

WHAT PEREIRA SAID

Pereira told ESPN: "About Brazil and England, we don't necessarily feel that there is a big, big gap. The last time Brazil won a tournament was fewer years ago than when England won a tournament. We could say there is a gap. But Brazil will always have big, big players and a big team. England as well. I think they have a lot of players that I think the Brazilian fans like. It is more the flair players - players like Rashford and Saka.

"We respect them and we know it is going to be a tough game but we are ready and we know what we are capable of. We want to win the game. We are Brazil. We always want to win everything."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

England's men's team famously haven't won a trophy since lifting the World Cup in 1966 but will be hoping to end that drought this summer at Euro 2024. The Three Lions finished as runners-up at Euro 2020 but will feel they can go one better this time around with a squad packed full of quality and including players such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka.

WHAT NEXT FOR ENGLAND

England take on Brazil on Saturday with the visitors missing a host of key players due to injury such as Neymar, Gabriel Martinelli, Casemiro, Gabriel Magalhaes, Alisson Becker and Ederson. The Three Lions follow up that game with another friendly at Wembley against Belgium on Tuesday.

Man United to compete with Arsenal for 26-year-old Premier League ace
Arsenal and Manchester United are keen on Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, as per HITC.

The 26-year-old defender will be a free agent in the summer. Naturally, top clubs are looking to secure his services on a bargain. The Englishman is a proven performer in the top flight, and he could prove to be a useful squad player for Arsenal and Manchester United next season.

Adarabioyo will add defensive cover, depth and physicality to the Arsenal backline. The opportunity to join a club capable of winning the Premier League title will be an attractive proposition for the player and moving to Arsenal would allow him to continue staying in London as well.

Arsenal need a deeper squad in order to keep up with the likes of Manchester City and signing a player like Adarabioyo on a free transfer would represent an excellent bit of business.

Tosin Adarabioyo would be a useful addition
Manchester United will need to replace players like Jonny Evans at the end of the season and the 26-year-old could prove to be a quality acquisition. The former Manchester City player has the ability to play for top clubs in the league and he could form a quality partnership with Lisandro Martinez.

Arsenal and Manchester United are not the only English clubs keen on the Fulham defender and they will face competition from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur as well. The 26-year-old will be an attractive target for most clubs because of his contract situation and it will be interesting to see where he ends up eventually.

Exclusive: Everton and Fulham eyeing Chelsea player currently at Huddersfield Town
Top-tier clubs in England and across Europe are thought to be keen on Chelsea-owned midfielder Alex Matos.

Everton and Fulham are both keen on Huddersfield Town midfielder Alex Matos, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

Currently on loan from Chelsea, the 19-year-old has enough at this point to attract interest from elite top-tier clubs from across Europe, despite the fact he doesn't have a huge amount of senior experience under his belt.

Joining the Blues back in the summer, the England youth international spent much of the first half of the 2023/24 campaign on the bench under Mauricio Pochettino, an excellent achievement considering he failed to make a single first-team appearance for Norwich City before his switch to Stamford Bridge.

Despite his first-team involvement at the Premier League giants, he was limited to two senior appearances under Pochettino during the first half of the season, persuading the West London outfit to send him out on loan to Huddersfield for the rest of this term.

His impact in front of goal in West Yorkshire has been limited thus far and that's because he hasn't had much of a chance to thrive recently, scoring just once in 12 games and even being an unused substitute against Rotherham United at the weekend.

But the teenager has been able to pick up some valuable experience in the Championship and could play a key part in keeping the Terriers afloat in the second tier beyond the end of the campaign.

Premier League and European interest emerges in Alex Matos
The Toffees have been linked with several second-tier players in the past, including Leeds United's Crysencio Summerville, with the club clearly having an eye on the division below them for fresh blood.

They are one of the teams that have taken an interest in 19-year-old Matos, along with Marco Silva's Cottagers.

FLW understands interest in the teenager isn't limited to English sides though, with Ligue 1 outfit Lille paying close attention to him.

The French club have helped former Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes to develop after he failed to assert himself as a vital member of the first-team squad at Old Trafford.

But they will face a considerable amount of competition to secure his signature, with Bundesliga title contenders Bayer Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven from the Netherlands also keeping tabs on his situation as he enters the final weeks of his loan spell at the John Smith's Stadium.

Chelsea may be reluctant to cash in on Alex Matos
Matos has been at Stamford Bridge less than a year and the Blues surely wouldn't have made the effort to bring him in if they didn't think he was going to be one for the future.

To let him leave so soon after bringing him in would be a risk, especially with the top-tier giants letting plenty of good players leave prematurely in the past.

Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku (first spell) and Mohamed Salah are three players they shouldn't have sanctioned exits for.

All three of those excellent players were at slightly more advanced stages of their careers than Matos currently is, but it's still a lesson for them.

Assessing him in pre-season and then potentially sending him out on another loan next season to see how he copes could be a better option than selling him, especially with the Blues not seeing the best of him yet.

Fulham hovering for 'dangerous player' – Swoop depends on upcoming performances
Back in January, we covered claims from the Germany that Hannover 96 'huge attacking talent' Nicolò Tresoldi had ended up on Fulham's radar.

It was also stated the second division German club valued him at €3m but no deal took shape in the winter market.

This week's edition of SportBild claims Fulham continue to follow the 19-year-old.

The striker graduated from Hannover 96's youth system and made his way into their first team in 2022. He's scored six goals and registered two assists from 22 league games this season.

SportBild state the Italy-born Germany U21 international has not only been a regular in recent weeks but has developed into 'one of the most dangerous players' at Hannover 96.

He's been rewarded for this with interest from the Bundesliga and abroad. For the latter, Fulham and Inter Milan are mentioned, and these two clubs have included the youngster in their target list.

Tresoldi has over two years left on his contract and Transfermarkt currently value him at €3m. The report adds he feels comfortable at the club and it's not a certainty that he'll change clubs in the summer.

This indicates the Premier League side will have to convince the player.

At the same time, SportBild have warned that interest from other clubs, likely Fulham and Inter, 'will become more concrete', if he were to impress until the end of this season.

Each international fixture Fulham players will be involved in
The international break is upon us and a number of Fulham players will be heading all over the world to play for their countries.

Fulham went into the break on a real high, hammering Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at Craven Cottage.

Many players are now heading off with their countries though, featuring in friendlies, qualifiers, play-off and play-in games across the globe.

Here, we look at all of Fulham's international players and tell you exactly when they will be playing before Premier League action resumes...

Bernd Leno Germany schedule
Fulham stopper Leno is part of the Germany squad ahead of two high-profile friendlies against France and the Netherlands.

Leno has been a mainstay for Fulham but is one of four goalkeepers fighting for playing time in this Germany squad.

Manuel Neuer, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Oliver Baumann offer major competition for places and Leno hasn't actually won a cap since 2021.

Saturday 23 March vs France [Friendly]
Tuesday 26 March vs Netherlands [Friendly]

Marek Rodak Slovakia fixtures
Rodak has been on the Fulham bench all season but he remains an important part of the Slovakia squad.

The 27-year-old started Slovakia's last game, a 2-1 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, back in November.

It's therefore no surprise to see him in the squad to face Austria and Norway in the coming days.

Newcastle United's Martin Dubravka offers big competition though, leaving Rodak to really push to become number one ahead of Euro 2024.

Saturday 23 March vs Austria [Friendly]
Tuesday 26 March vs Norway [Friendly]

Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi in action for Nigeria
Nigeria are looking to bounce back after losing the Africa Cup of Nations final at the hands of the Ivory Coast.

Alex Iwobi came in for huge criticism after that defeat but the Fulham man is in the squad once again, joining teammate Calvin Bassey.

The pair are key players and should be in line to feature against Ghana and Mali before heading back to West London.

Friday 22 March vs Ghana [Friendly]
Tuesday 26 March vs Mali [Friendly]

Fode Ballo-Toure Senegal fixtures
Left back Ballo-Toure has made just five Premier League appearances this season and is stuck behind Antonee Robinson at Fulham.

The 27-year-old is still an important man for Senegal though and will be looking to add to his 15 caps against Gabon and Benin.

Friday 22 March vs Gabon [Friendly]
Tuesday 26 March vs Benin [Friendly]

Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson United States schedule
peaking of Robinson, the flying Fulham left back is part of the USA squad alongside teammate Tim Ream.

The American pair will jet off to play in the CONCACAF Nations League, taking on Jamaica in the semi-finals.

A win would put Ream and Robinson into the final, which will take place in the early hours of Monday morning.

Defeat would see USA feature in the third place play-off, taking place late on Sunday night.

Thursday 21 March vs Jamaica [CONCACAF Nations League]
Potential third place playoff Sunday 24 March [CONCACAF Nations League]
Potential final Monday 25 March [CONCACAF Nations League]

London's top 50 youngsters: best academy stars across the capital
Special report on the leading young talent at Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Brentford and EFL

London is a hot bed for football talent — and the next generation of academy stars could spark a golden era of homegrown players.

Youth development has never been so valuable. Academy players have always been important to the identity of clubs, but new spending rules mean they are now more focused than ever on developing assets.

The ultimate aim is to unearth talented juniors and develop them into superstars, in the same way Bukayo Saka, Reece James, Harry Kane and Declan Rice have come through the ranks at some of the world-class academies in London in recent years.

But now, more than ever, homegrown players are key commodities to clubs. Selling academy players represents pure profit on balance sheets, unlike other players who have transfer fees on their cost base, and can help clubs keep their finances on track.

While fans may be upset at seeing homegrown players leave, generating cash from academies can allow clubs to keep spending big. As a result, the battleground for the brightest talents has never been as fierce.

Brexit restrictions on clubs signing players aged between 16 and 18 from Europe has further intensified the competition between clubs in the capital.

The talent in Premier League academies is, arguably, stronger than ever and more players developed in elite English proving grounds are showing themselves to be good enough to thrive in the top flight.

Kobbie Mainoo is just one to break through this season, and the Manchester United midfielder was on Tuesday rewarded for his fine form with his first England call-up. There is also the group of young Liverpool players, and this season the number of minutes accrued by players aged 21 and under has climbed by about 25 per cent.

Value placed on youth has never been higher and London continues to produce an astonishing amount of talent

The value placed on youth has never been higher, and the playing fields, streets and cages of London continue to produce an astonishing amount of talent.

Arsenal's 16-year-old midfielder Ethan Nwaneri became the youngest player in Premier League history in 2022 when he made his debut, aged 15 years and 181 days. Tottenham's 16-year-old forward Mikey Moore is also tipped for a big future, while Chelsea's new owners are committed to investing in their hugely successful academy. West Ham won the FA Youth Cup last season, beating Arsenal in an all-London final.

Even outside the top-flight, a talented Millwall Under-18s side has reached the FA Youth Cup semi-finals this season.

From the goalscoring machines and midfield maestros to the defensive prodigies and one goalkeeping kingpin, here are 50 academy talents, aged 18 and under, who look set to make their mark in the capital.

Arsenal
Amario Cozier-Duberry (18, Forward)

A late bloomer who joined Arsenal when he was 14 but has become a star at academy level. Helped the Gunners reach the FA Youth Cup Final last season and Arsenal Under-18s manager Jack Wilshere has compared his playing style to Bukayo Saka. Has regularly been on the bench for the first team.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (17, Midfielder)

A skilful midfielder who senior coaching staff at Arsenal think could become a left-back in the mould of Oleksandr Zinchenko. For now, he feels he is best at No6 or No8 and looks to learn from Declan Rice. His mum has a podcast to help parents in the industry.

Ayden Heaven (17, Defender)

A tall and rangy player capable of playing in defence or midfield and likes to impose himself on matches with his physical presence. Joined Arsenal aged 13 after being released by West Ham and was on the bench for their Champions League defeat in Porto last month.

Josh Nichols (17, Defender)

A right-back who had spells at Chelsea, West Ham and Tottenham before moving to Hale End. Has developed his game to tuck inside from the right — like Mikel Arteta has Ben White do for the first team — and has worked hard on the attacking side of his game.

Ethan Nwaneri (16, Midfielder)

Became the youngest player in Premier League history in 2022 when he made his debut aged 15 years and 181 days. Best at No8 or No10, he likes to get on the ball, glide past players and make an impact in the final third. Is set to sign his first professional contract after Arsenal fought off interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.

Chido Obi-Martin (16, Forward)

Went viral in November after scoring 10 goals as Arsenal Under-16s beat Liverpool 14-3. Already more than 6ft tall, he is a striker from Denmark who has caught the eye with his physique, pace and finishing ability. Big European clubs are already tracking him, including Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

Max Dowman (14, Midfielder)

A left-footed playmaker who made his debut for Arsenal Under-18s this season despite being just 13 years old at the time. Continues to play above his age group and is already part of the England Under-16 set-up. Is well-regarded for his close control and eye for a pass.

Brentford
Andre Grey (18, Defender)

Described by coaches as a well-balanced and forward-thinking centre-back. A product of the Kinetic Academy Programme, which gives young footballers the opportunity to stay in education while pursuing a career in football. Joined Brentford last year from non-League side Corinthian Casuals, who have a partnership with Kinetic.

Ollie Shield (17, Forward)

Compares himself to Mo Salah due to his direct play and ability to beat a player in one-versus-one situations out wide. Joined Brentford from Southampton last summer and has impressed in his first season for the Bees. Has a twin brother who is at Plymouth Argyle.

Omaru King (17, Forward)

The most exciting prospect in the Brentford Under-18s side, which was reformed in 2022 when the Bees reopened their academy. A winger who idolises Eberechi Eze and plays in a similar way to the Crystal Palace star, taking on defenders out wide with close control. Like Grey, another product of Kinetic who came from Corinthian Casuals.

Chelsea
Tyrique George (18, Forward)

A pacy and direct wide player who is one of the stars of the Chelsea academy. Known to score thunderous long-range goals with either feet and could soon make his senior debut, having trained with the first-team squad multiple times and made a positive impression on Mauricio Pochettino.

Somto Boniface (18, Defender)

An energetic and versatile left-sided player who can play at full-back or wing-back. Was named Chelsea Academy Scholar of the Year last season after impressing with his lung-bursting runs from deep, while delivering pinpoint crosses into the box. Among the talented players highly rated by coaches at Cobham.

Donnell McNeilly (18, Forward)

Another fast, powerful forward who is a regular provider of goals and assists. Diminutive in stature but clinical in front of goal, he is in the running to be named top scorer at Under-18s level, with the Blues challenging for the South Division title.

Michael Golding (17, Midfielder)

The youngest player to make his first-team debut under Pochettino this season. An attacking midfielder who possesses good leadership skills and has captained England at Under-16 and Under-17 level, he almost scored and assisted in his nine-minute cameo against Preston in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.

Kiano Dyer (17, Midfielder)

A stylish, bright and intelligent midfielder who can play in a number of positions across midfield. Progressed quickly at Chelsea after he joined from West Brom in 2020, making his debut for the Under-18s as a 15-year-old, and has trained with the first-team squad this season amid the injury crisis at Stamford Bridge.

Kai Crampton (17, Goalkeeper)

An exciting goalkeeping prospect who has already played senior football for Isthmian League side Concord Rangers during a short-term youth loan this season. Has also been part of the Chelsea side that has reached the Under-17 Premier League Cup Final after beating Manchester City earlier this month.

Ollie Harrison (16, Midfielder)

The youngest player to make a Chelsea matchday squad under Pochettino, he was named on the bench for their 1-1 draw at Manchester City in February. A tall midfielder who joined from Newcastle last summer and has been likened to Michael Carrick.

Landon Emenalo (16, Midfielder)

Left-footed midfielder is the son of former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo. Can play as a holding midfielder, in a box-to-box role, at No10 or at left-back and has been fast-tracked through the Blues academy after impressing coaches at Cobham.

Crystal Palace
Zach Marsh (18, Forward)

A lethal frontman who has been in blistering goalscoring form this season, registering 16 goals in 12 games in the Under-18s Premier League. Those 16 goals have included hat-tricks against Southampton, Fulham, Tottenham and most recently West Ham.

David Ozoh (18, Midfielder)

Probably the best prospect in the Palace academy. Has already made nine first-team appearances this season and has shown he has the physical edge and presence on the ball to cut it, including when he came on in first half against Manchester City in December and helped the Eagles earn a 2-2 draw at the Etihad.

Mofe Jemide (17, Defender)

A commanding, modern-day centre-back who is comfortable on the ball and has an eye for an accurate long pass. An imposing presence in defence, he has captained Palace Under-18s on occasions this season and was part of the England squad that reached the quarter-finals of the Under-17s Euros last year.

Jesse Derry (16, Forward)

A two-footed winger who is adept off either the left or the right flank. Made his Under-18s debut on the final day of last season, earned a scholarship last summer and has established himself as a regular for them. He made his England Under-17s debut in September.
Samuel Lusale (16, Forward)

A tricky winger with an eye for goal who has just made his debut for Slovakia Under-17s. He assisted their winning goal off the bench in a Euros qualifier against Switzerland, having played for the Palace Under-18s this season.

Fulham
Luc de Fougerolles (18, Defender)

Not the tallest centre-back but what he lacks in heights he makes up for with a fearless approach in the air. His consistency stands out to Fulham coaches and he made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup win at Ipswich in November. In October was called up by the Canada senior team, who he is eligible to represent through his father.

Callum Osmand (18, Forward)

A pacy, skilful forward with an eye for goal who has scored 17 times this season for Fulham Under-18s, who have one of their best generations in years. Known for his searing pace, he caught the eye when he scored a sensational bicycle kick against Brentford last year.

Josh King (17, Midfielder)

A consummate dribbler who can play anywhere across the midfield but prefers the No10 role. Presses intently and has added more goals to his game. Captained England at Under-16s level and recently signed his first professional contract, having become a key player for Fulham Under-21s.

Jonathan Esenga (17, Defender)

A left-back who has shone for Fulham Under-21s this season, having made the position his own after moving up age groups in pre-season. Despite that, some expect him to eventually end up at centre-back. Suffered a hamstring injury last month which might have ended his season.

Seth Ridgeon (16, Midfielder)

An unpredictable attacking midfielder who tends to play off the left but can also be deployed centrally and is difficult for opposition defenders to pin down. Has scored goals regularly at every level. Only turned 16 in January but has been pushed up an age-group to test him at Under-18s level in recent weeks.

Tottenham
Tyrese Hall (18, Midfielder)

A deep-lying creative midfielder who has just received his first call-up to the England Under-19s squad, where is joined by older Spurs academy players Alfie Dorrington, Jamie Donley and Will Lankshear. Strong with either foot, an excellent dribbler and a goal threat, his brilliant form for Spurs has led to interest from Manchester City.

Leo Black (18, Defender)

Enjoying a brilliant season in which he has demonstrated his versatility and comfort in possession by playing as an inverted right-back. Ange Postecoglou take note! One of the most improved players in the Spurs academy over the past 18 months and has just been named in the England Under-18s squad for the first time.

Callum Olusesi (17, Midfielder)

A rangy attacking midfield who is building a reputation in youth circles as a prodigious goal-scoring talent. Part of Spurs Under-17 and Under-18 Premier League Cup Double-winning side last season, he is expected to sign a new contract with the club soon after catching the eye of a number of leading European clubs.

Mikey Moore (16, Forward)

Widely considered one of the best young talents in the capital. A strong, skilful player with a powerful build who has caught the eye with his dribbling and finishing. Starred in Spurs' Premier League Cup Double last season, scoring a brilliant brace in the Under-17 Final against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Malachi Hardy (16, Defender)

Already over six foot, the England Under-16s captain has the makings of a commanding centre-back. Made his first start for Spurs Under-18s last week and has won plaudits at youth level for his maturity and calmness both in and out of possession.

Junai Byfield (15, Defender)

A tall and powerful centre-back who is still a season away from starting as a scholar at Spurs but already plays up for their Under-16s on a consistent basis. Another defender who is comfortable in possession, he has been called up by England youth sides and is highly rated.

Luca Williams-Barnett (15, Forward)

An attacking midfielder who typically plays from the left wing and is already known for his skills, dribbling and spectacular finishing. Regarded a top youth prospect by both Tottenham and England, and is starring for Spurs Under-16s this season.

West Ham
Oliver Scarles (18, Midfielder)

A versatile player who can play at left-back or in midfield. Made his West Ham debut as a 16-year-old in the Europa Conference League in 2022 and has been on the bench in the Premier League several times this year. With Aaron Cresswell likely to leave in the summer, first-team opportunities may lie ahead.

Lewis Orford (18, Midfielder)

Talented on the ball and with an eye for goal, was part of the highly-rated crop that won the FA Youth Cup last season. A lifelong West Ham fan who joined the club as a five-year-old. Is yet to make his senior debut but, like Scarles, has recently featured in matchday squads.

Josh Ajala (17, Forward)

A pacy striker who can play off both feet and moved to West Ham from Chelsea last summer. Was a prolific goalscorer through the youth ranks at Chelsea and quickly impressed for the Hammers. Has 11 goals already this season for the West Ham side that sit top of the Under-18 Premier League South.

Daniel Rigge (17, Midfielder)

An attacking midfielder who describes himself as a "risk-taker" and someone who likes to get on the ball and create things. Also has a fine goalscoring knack, showcased in his hat-trick in a 4-2 win for the Under-18s against Aston Villa this month. Has stepped up this term to become a key figure in Kevin Keen's side this season.

Emeka Adiele (17, Defender)

A dynamic left wing-back who is considered a standout prospect for his attacking threat. Has already contributed four goals and four assists in what is his first full season for the Under-18s. There are high hopes for him in the Hammers academy.

Chinaza Nwosu (15, Midfielder)

A powerful midfielder with a good passing range who has impressed academy staff with his attitude to learning. The youngest of the West Ham contingent on this list has been a regular for England Under-16s this season, including when winning the Val-de-Marne Tournament in November.

Millwall
Romain Esse (18, Midfielder)

An attacking midfielder who is adept at playing in a variety of positions behind a striker. Agile, a good dribbler and good technically, has established himself as a regular in the Millwall first-team squad since he scored a late winner in their 1-0 win at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the Championship season.

Josh Stephenson (18, Midfielder)

Captained Millwall Under-18s to a shock win over Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals at the Den last month. The Lions will face old rivals Leeds in the semi-finals. A left-footer who is quick, good on the ball and combative in midfield.

Kavalli Heywood (17, Forward)

The main attacking threat in the talented Millwall side going for FA Youth Cup glory and punching above their weight in academy football. A good finisher who can also carry the ball to help take pressure off the team if they are under the cosh.

QPR
Charlie Street (15, Defender)

A centre-back who has just been called up to the Wales Under-16s squad and is known for his range of passing. Has impressed for Rangers academy teams this season and his eye for a goal means he can also play in midfield

Charlton
Patrick Casey (18, Forward)

A prolific frontman who scored 42 goals for Charlton Under-18 and Under-21s last season. Has scored a further 31 goals this season and made his senior debut when he came on as a late substitute against Oxford on New Year's Day. Descried by one of his former coaches describes as "a throwback" due to the way he harasses defenders.

Micah Mbick (17, Forward)

Erik ten Hag 'keeping tabs' on ex-Man City star who Man Utd could sign for free
Manchester United are expected to sign at least one centre-back this summer and could have a bargain on their hands.

Manchester United are one of seven Premier League clubs 'keeping tabs' on Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, according to a recent report.

Adarabioyo is out of contract with Fulham at the end of June and is currently expected to leave in the summer, following an excellent individual campaign at Craven Cottage. Marco Silva's side remain hopeful they can agree fresh terms with the defender but there are just three months left on his current deal.

Top clubs have been keeping a close eye on the situation since the end of last year, when it became evident that the 26-year-old may look to move on once the season ends. and HITC now reports that United are among many potential suitors.

They are one of several Premier League clubs hoping to snatch Adarabioyo on the cheap, with rivals Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, West Ham and Everton also named in the report. The player is thought to want a step up in quality and is utilising his impending status as a free agent to attract interest from those competing for Europe.

AC Milan, Juventus, Lyon and Marseille are also said to be eyeing a potential free transfer and hold an advantage, given foreign clubs can enter pre-contract talks once a player enters the final six months of their respective contract. Any teams from the same country as Fulham will have to wait until the summer before approaching the centre-back.

Adarabioyo joined Fulham for around £2million back in 2020, ending a near 18-year association with Manchester City. The Manchester-born defender came through the academy before making eight first-team appearances, none of which came in the Premier League.

Central defence will be a key area of focus at United this summer, with multiple arrivals expected in that area. Only Lisandro Martinez is all but guaranteed a place in next season's squad, with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans set to leave as free agents while Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof could both be sold.

Erik ten Hag will likely sanction at least one major arrival in central defence, with interest in the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite, Jean-Clair Todibo and Edmond Tapsoba. But in the era of profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) being more strictly enforced, funds will not be infinite and so low-cost squad signings like Adarabioyo will likely be welcomed by new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Fulham star on increased injuries due to physical exhaustion – Wants a better balance and more rest
As players from the Portuguese national team continue to give countless interviews, Fulham star João Palhinha spoke to the local press again.

This time quoted by Radio Renascença, he talked about how tough the season has been and how that could lead footballers to get more injuries.

Palhinha said the schedule involving clubs and country has been too tight, and no one is looking for a solution.

"There have been more injuries this season than others. It is difficult to prevent so many injuries with so many games, even with clubs in excellent conditions. You have to be aware when a certain limit is exceeded and think about the player's physical health. Several people have already mentioned this issue, but, unfortunately, it has not yet had any impact," he said.

"We need to think about periods of games, travel and that makes us reach a point of great physical exhaustion."

Since the national team has been making use of a bigger rotation in the squad, the Fulham player claims he sees a better situation there.

"This allows us to have some rest, although in the national team the situation is different. When we arrive here and wear our country's shirt, the tiredness is a little behind."

Palhinha has indeed been playing a lot for Fulham this season, with 2433 minutes in 30 appearances, having only missed a few Premier League matches due to minor injuries and a suspension.

The situation has been different in Portugal, not only because of Roberto Martinez's rotation, but also because they had a perfect campaign in the Euro qualifiers.

That allowed the manager to rotate a lot more and keep everyone happy, especially those who were looking for a chance.

With the national team now playing a couple of friendlies, we'll see whether Palhinha will be on the pitch.

Newcastle United fans facing major disruption v Fulham as train strikes announced
Train strikes: Yet more strikes have been planned and Newcastle United fans heading to Craven Cottage are set to be impacted.

Newcastle United fans heading to Craven Cottage next month are set to be impacted by the latest round of train strikes. A wave of strikes affecting 16 rail companies countrywide have been announced between April 5 and April 8.

Newcastle United fans, who will watch their team face Fulham on Saturday 6 April, are set to be affected by industrial action from LNER that has been for that date. Unlike their previous trip to Craven Cottage which saw the match kick-off at 7pm on Saturday, supporters heading from the north east to the capital on April 6 would have been able to do the trip on trains there and back on the same day.

However, this latest wave of strike action means that is now unlikely with trains expected to be cancelled and a severely reduced service to be in operation. On the planned strike-action, Mick Whelan, ASLEF general secretary, said: "Our members voted overwhelmingly - yet again - for strike action. Those votes show a clear rejection by train drivers of the ridiculous offer put to us in April last year.

"We have given the government every opportunity to come to the table but it is now clear they do not want to resolve this dispute. They are happy for it to go on and on."

This is far from the first time Magpies fans have been affected by rail strikes, however, with trips last season to Brighton and Fulham among those affected. Newcastle have defeated Marco Silva's side twice already this season with 3-0 and 2-0 wins in the Premier League and FA Cup respectively.

Newcastle suffer huge blow with Sven Botman ruled out for up to nine months with ACL injury... having sustained the problem during the Magpies' 2-0 defeat by Man City

Newcastle are set to be without Sven Botman for the next six months
He was substituted with injury in Newcastle's defeat by Man City on Saturday

Newcastle defender Sven Botman will undergo ACL surgery next week and will be out for between six and nine months.

The Dutch defender suffered the injury in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat by Manchester City on Saturday and was substituted in the 82nd minute.

Botman missed three months earlier in the season after damaging ligaments in the same knee. It is thought this latest problem is a separate issue, but it will raise questions over the decision not to operate in September.

A club statement read: 'Following further assessment, a scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL during Saturday's match and he is expected to return to action within six-to-nine months.

'The Dutch centre-back initially sustained a knee injury in September 2023 and elected for a non-surgical rehabilitation plan - a decision which saw him return to action in December. Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Sven a full and speedy recovery.'

The loss of the 24-year-old is the latest injury blow to hit Eddie Howe this season. Club captain Jamaal Lascelles will now deputise at centre-back.

Botman revealed at Christmas that he had returned after damaging knee ligaments, when he said: 'I did my knee against Brentford (Sep 16) but then played two games after that (without realising).

It blew up the day after the Sheffield United game (Sep 24) and the scan showed some big damage in my knee.

'Some people (specialists) said it was a total rupture. Others said that it wasn't.

'So I have done everything to rest and avoid surgery. The operation would have kept me out for nine months but I'm back and feeling like my old self again. So it seems like I made the right choice.'
