There can't be too many of us who at some point haven't smiled and
been in awe of Proms Conductor (and many other achievements) Sir Andrew Davis who has died at the age of 80.
A genius.
VERY DAFT AND A LOT DAFTER THAN I SEEM, SOMETIMES

Dr Know

Never heard of him !   Proms , not interested .

Twig

Very sad news indeed, RIP Andrew.

Sad when someone, in most cases , dies but like I say , never heard of him , so why is it my loss ?

The loss of any human being who was talented and was able to communicate the genius of music to an audience is sad. If a writer you never read died or a painter whose painting you never saw or a singer you never heard died. Then it is still a loss. If you only care about the loss of someone you know or the loss of anything that you have experienced. It means that you will never have the chance to share in anything new they do. The loss is you will never have the experience.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

Just to echo the comments of the OP and those who have posted in support. It is also reassuring to see that there are still Fulham supporters among the seemingly ever-diminishing proportion of the population which appreciates serious culture.
I too find Dr Know's comments rather baffling and uncalled for. You don't see such a reaction on here when, say, a rock musician dies. Why do so many people in this country seem to take pride in ignorance?

A very talented man. RIP.

RIP Sir Andrew, a very talented man.

I don't believe in dumbing down, but that the arts including 'high' art, should be  available for everyone to appreciate.

Incidentally, Maestro, the Leonard Bernstein biopic is available on Netflix.
It's pretty good, especially the musical bits, shows the power of music, and its importance to Bernstein, although his personal life was a bit of a mess it seems.
