Bogey Teams

So we haven't beaten Palace at home in eight games (noting that we've only lost twice away at Palace in the last 16 games). Don't see them as a bogey team, at least not when compared to:

Man City who we haven't beaten in 25 games, including 19 straight defeats in all competitions (which in itself includes 16 straight PL defeats).

Arsenal who we have never beaten in a game at their place (32 games without a win stretching back over 100 years).

And Burnley where we have not won since 1951, 32 games at Turf Moor without a win.

Palace have got a long way to go to catch up with those three teams.

And by the way is it normal (or perhaps just Fulhamish) to have not one but three bogey teams??

I'm a big believer in bogey teams, despite there being no reason these things should exist - they just seem to do.

I did research into our away record against teams in claret and blue (Burnley, Villa and West Ham) in the Premier League era, and it currently stands at

Played: 39
Won: 3
Drawn: 7
Lost: 29

Two of our must win games this month are away at Burnley and West Ham. We can obviously get results, but forgive me for not having much confidence. Irrespective of form, some grounds and teams just seem to have some kind of a hex.

Bogey teams get up my nose.

Yeah, with Crystal Palace at home we've now officially entered Hoodoo territory  ::cry::

I'm interested in drawing out what it is about bogey teams, and how these can exist beyond reason for so long.

In a way they're myths, but myths can then have a grip on psyche until they're broken.

Goodison was a curse for us until we finally won there, and then it turned into our favourite away ground to play at for a good few years.

West Ham always feel like a bogey team to me.
Even if we are the better team on the day they always seem to somehow get a draw or snatch a win.

Yep, it's the three claret and blue teams combined - Burnley, West Ham and Aston Villa. Most notably when away from home. Rather weird, but I go into games against these three with a specific kind of dread.
