23 Games

23 games of a PL season is of no particular relevance but how does our 34 points after 23 games stack up against previous PL seasons?

Very well in fact. In only one season (2022/23) have we had more points than this season (35). In 2003/04 we'd also reached 34 points after 23. And last season we managed 33 after 23. The surprise for me is our first ever PL season 2001/02 when we got to 31 points after 23.

On a points per game of 1.478 so far this year, we're projected to reach 56 points this season which would be our highest ever in the PL. We shall see.

An unrelated fact. Saturday's game was our 300th PL game since our last PL hattrick (Pogrebnyak v Wolves 4 March 2012).

I'll also note that at 23 games (1 shy of 2/3 season) we have 10 wins.  Only three teams in the league have more. 4 other teams also have 10.  That's pretty solid results for this far into the season.

I looked at last years the other day. Although we only have 1 point more this year we are only 3 points off 5th vs 8 points off last year. We were 7 off 7th last year where we currently sit as well!! Essentially in a much stronger position this year then despite only being a point better off.  ::thumb::

we are 2pts ahead of our Corresponding fixtures from last season, our next three games we got zero points from so any points from those games would put us even further ahead of last season.

Strangely, we are only joint 11th for both goals scored and conceded but what we do have this season that is hard to accurately encapsulate in stats is GRIT and SPIRIT.

Even when we are maybe not playing so fluidly we keep going and never know when we are beat, often getting points and results on sheer will. Such an elusive, underrated and almost priceless trait to have and clearly something developed from a sense of togetherness, belief in each other and the plan: which is inevitably instilled by Silva.

Hoping that if we get the Pepi and Bobb deals over the line that it is sufficient to persuade Silva that we can match his ambition and sign a new deal; with Wilson doing the same in turn.

I could be persuaded that, for balance and quality across the team, this is our best squad in my era (80s onwards). If we bring in Pepi and Bobb this week, that goes from arguable to irrefutable.
