Wow, even after letting go of a few older players. Shows just how old our squad was relative to other in the league. This summer perhaps is just rebalancing rather than going too far the other way.

To be fair, it's kind of skewed because we have two 35-year-olds (TC and Lecomte), both of whome don't get much game time and one 34-year-old in Leno. So two goalkeepers and keepers tend to have longer careers.

Of the other players 30 and older (one 31-year-old and four 30-year-olds), only one or two of them are starters (Iwobi and Andersen) while two rotate based on fitness (Tete and Castagne) and then there's Reed. Who knows what plans AA has for Reed.

Just putting it out there, but Mudryk to go out on loan this season, and he wants to stay in the Premier League.  There are supposedly a handful of Prem clubs interested, including Coventry.  I know this player comes with baggage, but I still think a huge talent is there.  Not sure what FFC fans think about him.  Sometimes a team needs to take a chance on a firebrand and player that has 'issues'.  Not really keen on loans, but if attached with possible purchase, I wonder if some here might consider?

A bit of a marmite player, can be good, can be awful, so either loved or hated.

I did consider this but I want this to be the season where Bobb and Kevin establish themselves as our first choice wingers. Great to have competition out there and realistically we'll get injuries, but I just think Mudryk risks throwing too much into the mix. Would prefer a more up and coming player better suited as a backup option.

Dave Kidd (fulham fan & journo) says we want 5 more by deadline day; Pitarch, RB, RW, CB & GK, and if we can shift Andersen then another CB. He's fairly well connected because I think he used to work for one of the major papers so would take that as an informed take

Would like to bring 5 in but I think that maybe optimistic unless we sell a couple with decent fees.

Given we want a RB it's likely one will leave and that will almost certainly be Castagne. We'll want about £8-10m which would cover the fee for signing Fort from Barca so that's one in one out and no change to the net spend, Pitarch will likely be a deadline day signing because there's a bit of a transfer chain there with RM (and he's already been to MP so just waiting for the green light from RM), CB it looks as though we have budget there anyway and RW will likely be a cheaper fee or loan with option type signing given they'll likelly be a backup to Bobb. GK is the one I think we struggle with in all honesty at this point but you never know

I agree - on average over 25 players ours are just over one year older than the average across the entire Premier League. That is negligible in the overall scheme of things particularly if one were to exclude the keepers

Good point. The 'just over one year older' figure does rely on an assumption, however, that other clubs don't also have goalkeepers who are older than the average age of their outfield players and seasoned professionals who are not regular first-XI starters. For example, Chelsea, at the other end of the table, average squad age of 24, have Henderson and Welbeck (36 and 35 respectively) while keeper Sanchez is 28.

Not sure on Wan-Bissaka. Good defender but I would like us to go for a more attacking fullback that can contribute more in the final 3rd. At 28 he's definitely not worth 25m

We are going through an extreme overhaul. That said I feel Leno and Andersen are two players that we could improve on. Given so many other senior players have gone, I'm partial to agree with you. You need a degree of dressing room continuity. But in isolation I wouldn't oppose either player being moved on.

The thing is every squad is "skewed" by its older players, that's how an average works. Lots will have one or two old backup players but that in itself doesn't get you to the top of that table. We're there because we've hardly any genuinely "young" players (under 21) and loads in their late 20s or older. It goes back to my old post about it taking several seasons to unwind (don't forget we already made a start last year by signing Bobb and Kevin). This idea that we might suddenly lack "experience" is frankly laughable. We need to sign about 5 more youngsters just to be "normal".

The famous "Flaw of averages!"tTwo 35 year olds totally skew the average. Reminds me of the headline "Man drowns in stream on average 2 inches deep" Read on and there is a 1 square foot 10 ft drop off in the middle.
