Quote from: jayffc on Today at 01:13:46 PMAs mentioned above, the issue with RCB is more glaring. Anderson is decent but clearly unsuited to Arbeloas desired system. Luc DF is seemingly not considered ready. So we're playing a LCB at RCB as preferance over either.
Eh, Bassey has played RCB a few times this preseason because he's going to have to do so on Monday due to Joa's suspension.

Correct?

As I wrote

Bassey is a left-footed LCB. Having played there the vast majority of his career.
Who is currently having to play RCB...including in pre-season...
Because it appears that the manager would rather do that than play Anderson (a natural RCB) or Luc DF.

Worth noting that the "ITK" rumours here all summer have been that the club were/are actively interested in bringing 2 CB's if they could find a suitor for Anderson. Kinda suggests the issue is deeper than just the first game for Arbeloa

No sure what exactly the confusion is here

Sting of the North

Will that purple patch myth for Muniz never die? Are people still thinking it was just one good streak, and completely forgetting that he repeated at a similar level the next season?

He is at least two flashes in the proverbial pan, not one...

I think you are the one confused here, I must say. The suggestion was that Bassey plays RCB now because Andersen is suspended for the first game, so not necessarily because he is preferred to Andersen (it can be either reason, or both, but from the outside it is clearly too early to tell).

JimmyConway

What's the difference between playing two right footed centre backs or two left footed centre backs? Not entirely sure but two left footed centre backs personally feels cumbersome? Possibly you won't see that very often either?
It's not ideal and hope it's not a case of throwing in the towel for the first game?

That's not how I read AA's decision to give Bassey a few starts this preseason at RCB. I think he did so simply because  Bassey's going to have to start there on Monday (and AA wanted him to get a few reps there in what is not his natural position).

Considering the club have supposedly been looking for a taker for Anderson this summer, I wouldn't be so sure this is for the first game only (depending on how they do)

It's possible we've only started Bassey and Cuenca for last couple games in a row for game one only -but suspect it's not so cut and dry imo. Andersons performances in pre season left me concerned about how he'll get on in a system that may leave him exposed for pace. If true the club was looking for a replacement had it been possible (it looks like it wont be now given our struggles to get one RCB in the door let alone two) then it does indicate to me he's not seen as right fit for this system. And Bassey being talked up as a captain seems further indication of this...heck even Harrison Reed was wearing the armband over Anderson in pre season

Had already edited. Stand by the wider point. Especially given Anderson not being the captain in the absence of TC like he was in prior season. Find that fairly interesting when tied with the rumours of them exploring possible suitors for him

Already responded to in the chain my thoughts. Wouldnt be surprised if bassey and cuenca have a decent game against Chelsea that they keep their places given all the indicators discussed above.

Look, I think it's certainly possible (maybe even likely) that AA thinks JA isn't an ideal fit for what he's trying to do and would like to bring in someone to start ahead of him. But I think it's a bit of a leap to go from that to say (as the poster I initially replied to did) that AA would rather play Bassey out of position at RCB than play Andersen. Now in fairness the poster who said this apparently erroneously thought that Cuenca and Bassey had started our last three preseason matches together, which I suppose can explain in part why he made that statement. Of course it was only 2 of our last 3 matches and as far as I'm concerned it makes perfect sense to me that AA would want to give Bassey (a natural lefty) ~150 minutes (which tbf isn't that much) on the right to get comfortable playing alongside Cuenca in preparation for Chelsea (and I wouldn't read anything into how AA feels about JA from that).

And yeah, if we manage to beat or draw (with say a 0-0 or 1-1 scoreline) with Chelsea I wouldn't be surprised if AA were to trot out Bassey/Cuenca together again. Pretty standard for a manager to not make changes to a winning team (or one that gets a good draw against superior opposition). But again, even then I wouldn't conclude from that that AA would rather play Bassey out of position than play Andersen.

But, who knows? I suppose we'll find out over the next month or so.

Does Pires know something?

https://x.com/GFFN/status/2090861925747785808?s=20

Spent a decent amount of time playing and working in Spain. Wonder why he has us as one to watch and Garcia. Must rate him and AA highly though

It's no secret how highly rated Garcia is to be fair

He's young, but his breakout golden boot performance at the world club championship put him on the map and hes done very well in la liga performances too. Arbeloa himself claiming he sees him as having potential to be one of the best in in the world. Real Madrid fans calling him Raul 2.0 . The kid has huge talent, wether it translates to the prem straight away, well have to see...still a young man but 22 not a teenager, I certainly see the quality there and believe he can make an impact this year

Yup thought he hustled well again. Worth a cheeky contract to see how he gets on I think as we're short of u21 strikers. Not a world beater currently but does seem to have some talent and could be good to see how he can improve in a proper academy environment.

Better from Zepa who got a nice tap in
Casey continues to look a very classy player. Looks capable of controlling a game.
Quasie continues to play well despite having gone a bit under the radar in terms of hype.

A great comeback win ending 4-3
