1 hour 59 minutes and 30 seconds.

Sabastian Sawe of Kenya

Blimey.

Unbelievable. The guy who came second must be gutted as he went under 2 hours and came second.

The record used to be 2 hours 8 minutes when I was a kid.

It is an incredible achievement but when you look at the type of running shoes they're using nowadays, it's no wonder Marathon world records are being broken.

Sabastian Sawe was wearing Adidas Adios Pro Evo 3 trainers, which were pretty much specifically designed to break the marathon world record. Only 100 of them are being sold initially to get around legal issues (effectively homologation). They provide huge amounts of energy regeneration and help push the runner forward with every step, so they run faster and tire less.

Not knocking his achievement, but it's shoe technology that's now enabling athletes to break records as much as the advances in training and nutrition etc.

He's still running Alfie. Silly bugger started in Eastbourne, got warm by Reigate and overheated at London Bridge and nearly exploded in Birdcage Walk. He's ok though, will rest for 10 minutes and begin a slow walk back to Eastbourne.

Sorry, carbon trainers help significantly, these shoes apparently a new gen too, bit like the swimsuits swimmers have been banned from using, carbon trainers should be too.

Clearly a top athlete (hopefully clean but that region isn't exactly know for strict doping regulations) but has been aided significantly

Sorry, but whilst these trainers are helpful, the sheer physical ability to run 26 miles in under two hours is beyond comprehension to me. I've run a few in a tad over 3 hours 20 and to take an hour twenty off of that is just incredible. Flash trainers or not.

I had to look up the definition of homologation. That wasn't the definition I was expecting 👀

I'm not knocking the athletes' ability or the fact they're able to run 26 miles at 4 minute something mile pace (which is just mind blowing), but if it wasn't for these types of trainers, they wouldn't be breaking 2 hours.
They wouldn't be far off, but it is giving them an advantage runners even just a few years ago didn't have.

i'm going to run the next one with a jet engine on my back made by Adidas

Do those shoes come with studs too, there are a few players i can think of that could use a little more pace.  Alternatively, we could try that banned swimsuit material for our kit on rainy days.

I've got some Nike's with a carbon plate - got them during the winter at a knockdown price, though they're not the top of the range, but they really make a difference to my running as a slow park runner.

My times were getting slower and slower, so I bought the Nike's  when I saw how cheap they were, and they are definitely the best shoes I've had -comfortable, supportive, and they  make you run faster!
EG on Saturday, in my local park run, a tough, hilly,3 lap course,  my legs felt terrible, almost from the start,, but the  shoes make you want to run faster even when you're going slow - they sort of propel you forward.
And in the end my time wasn't as bad as it  would  have been with other shoes.

Even I feel like I could really run fast in them - if I was fit enough to keep up the pace!

I previously I've always run in  the cheapest road shoes, and did when I've run the London - three times.
But a lot slower than  under  two hours, that's like running at a very fast sprint for most of us, for  26 miles. Incredible!

Do we also decide that any track record not run on cinders is cheating?
