Title: Ruiz off and we dominate
Post by: Zu-Meister on September 27, 2014, 05:17:53 PM
He is useless in english football. David far superior option to him.

He was adding nothing at all. Disappointing, but I was in favour of giving him a run in this lower division. One incident saw him pass directly to Brum players twice in about ten seconds. He just doesn't seem to have a footballing head on his shoulders when he turns out for us. Perhaps he has to go to another club and be wonderful there where every other player feeds him with goalscoring chances.

as long as we keep on hoooofing the ball forward he will be lost ,
pass and move is the way forward. first half he was the only bit of quality we had.

I thought he played ok first half, he needs room to operate and this (ridiculous) narrow diamond that we're so intent on playing doesnt suit him at all.

Play him with some quick wingers to stretch the opposition and give him room and he'd thrive

I wasn't able to watch the match so can't give an opinion. However, after spending the last 45 minutes reading everyone's comments,  have no idea how Ruiz played. Half talk about skill and quality passing and the other half talk about him being light weight & slow.

Odd game, football. I guess beauty IS in the eye of the beholder.

In prior appearances, I sort of liken him to Berbatov. About 85 minutes of nothing spiced with the occasional flash of brilliance.

Our only wingers are teens.....and they're all right sided. We're not built (thanks to Magath, I assume) for wing play but for overlapping fullbacks/wingbacks. The problem with pouring our backs forward is that we haven't been defensively organized enough to take that risk. We've got good players but, this is a poorly constructed roster. We're just not that tactically flexible IMHO.

I was thinking on Wednesday that we needed David in the second half. He seems to be more direct and pacey with his running and will thread little balls through the eye of a needle. Ruiz slows us down still and takes the safe option with the pass.

I thought he had a good first half, worked hard and tracked back like I've never seen before. He was really trying (standard cries of "yes, he's very trying" and "not hard enough"). Some superb touches as well.

I watched the whole game and considering he was supposed to be the main creative person in the
team, if anyone can remind me of a single earth shattering attacking pass I'll eat my words,
I've got "my words" written on a piece of paper on the table.
It can't be blamed on Hugo or McCormack because they did run the channels and charge about
giving opportunities to thread the ball through or over their defence.

I'm sorry he may not be the greatest in the world to you but to call him useless is pretty stupid.  You know who's useless? Mark Fotheringham and Gabor Kiraly.

We try to play through a crowded midfield when it would be easier to spread play. Do that and Ruiz will have targets to aim for.

Probably rightly Kit is trying to make us defensively more solid with runners and harrassers in midfield. Doesn't suit Bryan.

My issue with Ruiz is his defensive work. He never closes people down. Good on the ball today and kept possession well. But also never runs into space.

On Tuesday when he went off we played better. Ditto today.

I think he is a luxury player who we can't have on the pitch when we are up against it. Sorry.

I think he is a nice guy, but not convinced. Would rather have someone that runs and tackles and closes people down David or Williams or Roberts.

Kit had two wingers on the bench if he'd thought it appropriate to bring them on but I think he was trying to get a point minimum so playing it a little safe by staying narrow.

It amazes me that to the pro Ruiz fans that under now 4 , yes, 4 managers, it is the system that does not suit him. Well I am sorry, I have no axe to grind but on his performances since he has been here he will never cut it. Not his fault he is just not suited to English football, to many frailties.
Title: Re:
Post by: MJG on September 27, 2014, 09:01:58 PM
People saying Ruiz would be fine with two wingers.. Are you advocating we only play one striker then with Ruiz behind him?
Because if you are not then you  want Ruiz as one of two central midfielders which quite frankly would be bloody suicide. Also you won't get anywhere in this league without two strikers playing up top.

I'm certainly not. If we did that I'd be playing Smith up top with McC behind him but that's far from what we've been doing and too adventurous in my view in our (and Kit's) present position.

Not in that formation, certainly. He needs to operate in a team that's dominating the midfield in the way that Murphy and Etuhu did but we don't have their equivalent at present. It's an enigma and I watch to see if Kit can sort it as he refines his team.

I'll try again... Where would you play him in a Fulham team to get the best out of him?  What would be the formation. Forget personal,  where in a fantasy team would you play him.

Then with the current players how would you play him?

I'm just interested in how we can get best from him.

He was at his best when he played with Dempsey, some of their interplay was sublime. How we recreate that with the current personnel (perhaps David?) I do not know them well enough to comment but that does not mean that I give up on hoping to see it.

Really have no idea what ruiz is and what people have seen of him to think he will ever be a success in England

He doesn't track back has no fight in him dwells on the ball to long and can't compute the situation quick enough to release the man.

Having been there today and against Blackburn and nearly every other time he's pulled on the shirt I can safely say that seeing his name on the team sheet drives me crazy

We don't have enough wingers to consistently play 4-4-2 so I'd stick with the midfield in a diamond

Sorry It's just all I read about Ruiz is... If we had runners wide... If he played here... If he played there...
But as soon as you push people to give a formation with players no one seems to name one.  You knew enough to make the comment that wingers were on the bench,  but when I ask you to name a formation with Ruiz in to get the best you say you don't know them well enough.

Let's face it,  he can't hack it,  we were a better team when he went off.

So Ruiz can't even be an option off the bench?  My gripe with the original poster is that Ruiz was called useless. I'm sorry I don't agree with that.  If Kit doesn't want to start him anymore I won't cry on the floor about it but I'm sure he can help us in certain ways/situations.

I think MJ's statue has hit the nail on the head, he is a very good player when he has time on the ball, to give him such time on the ball he need's a free role, I am not sure if we have this luxury though in truth.

We need to start Woodrow, and Possibly David, but I do think Ruiz can play some sort of role for us, maybe if RM get's injured.

Well Lee obviously thinks he is a dangerous player. It seemed to me that his instructions were to stop Bryan at all costs! Ruiz does keep defenders occupied allowing some space for others, if nothing else. I thought he played well, even considering the close attention he was given. I'm not saying that I prefer him to young David, though, who I would like to see more of for his direct running. I just think that saying Ruiz is useless is a bit useless in itself!

It's about combinations, not individuals. As individuals, Bryan, Chris David and Ross McCormack are among the best footballers at the club. However, there is only room for two of them at a time with one is either placed upfront or on the wing. That was the case during the first, woeful hour at Birmingham.

When we had two runners busting a gut upfront and just one of those others sitting behind, then strings actually got pulled and it worked.

So I'd not personalise it either in terms of pointing fingers or deciding that such-and-such a player is too talented to be omitted. To put it another way, if Ross had been the one to depart yesterday, that might also have worked -- and it might on another occasion. What got added was the key.

"Woodrow on and we started to play better" is my conclusion from yesterday ... why 'cos until he came on, no one had chased the ball down.  He pressurised their defence and that started to creep into our other players.

Sorry but Woodrow has started several times this season and has shown absolutely nothing. He's a good option to bring in when we need a bit of energy but certainly not a player we should start with.

Ruiz would work best in the following fluid front four with the ball played along the ground. This formation would also allow us to move to a 4-3-3 when attacking and deep into an 4-5-1 when defending.

David   Ruiz   McCormack
           Rodallega

One of the problems with Woodrow in earlier games is once again Magath did not play a player in his best position.
He is the second striker,  behind the main one. Exactly how Symons employed him yesterday.
In a couple of games he's been played as the point man,  and it's not his role. This is difference with Symons being in charge.... He knows how to get the younger ones playing.

I have to disagree with you completley Pluto. When he has been on the pitch we have played our best football. Ipswich Last 20, Cardiff at home and Bham away last 30.

I would say he is the most creative attacking player we have in the team.

He gives the ball away too often to start, especially for a team that's looking to control position like we are. I think as long as he's at the club he's too talented to completely discard. Leaving him on the bench to come on late in games if we're trailing makes the most sense.

Having started this thread with few words, i will expand and summarise.

1) Ruiz is a talented player. But only flourishes when given space and time to pick a pass. David on the other hand is able to use his agility to make space for himself, and the speed with which he picks out a pass has really impressed me.

2) Ruiz slows down play when he hold possession of the ball. And his rushed forward passes rarely hit the target. David has an assured left foot and is a very direct player, his first thought is attack, find space, pass or shoot. Ruiz thinks about possession more. But in the Championship, David's style wins.

3) Ruiz loses the ball in dangerous positions. When he drops deep to look for possession, often he is caught and loses the ball thus setting up the oppositions counter attacks. This has been happening every game he has played since joining.

4) Ruiz is scared of physical contact. Doesnt challenge in an aerial duel, despite his height, hardly ever wins the ball. Doesnt tackle. And loses the ball as mentioned before due to lack of strength to shield the ball.

5) Ruiz works hard but is ineffective. I admit that he is a hard working player, he covers the ground. But he doesnt do anything with it. Here i am focusing on his defensive play. He tracks back but never puts the tackle in.

He is no doubt a talented player, but too lightweight for us or for english football. it is no surprise that his best games for us have come against Arsenal.

I sincerely wish Kit would see this fact, especially considering the fact that he has subbed him in the last three games.

Chris David is the man. He is a brilliant footballer. And I was very much looking forward to see him play this season. Dissapointed so far in Kit that he has not used him yet. Hopefully vs Bolton.......

It must be very hard to be a professional footballer in today's world.  In the old days players would get stick from fans, crowds, radio and newspapers.  Now they get it from all of those plus internet, twitter, facebook, forums (like this one) and the numerous sports programs on the telly.  One now a days is hounded every where he turns.

Ruiz is a fantastic footballer who is being played wrong.  Currently we are not set up to utilize him properly.  Would love to see us go more with a 4-2-3-1 shape.  Drop Ruiz in just behind the striker.

I have no sympathy the interest and ultimately money that everyone pumps in means that after he's read the opinions of the fans he still walks home with more money in a week then the vast majority earn in a year.

I don't buy the wrong position argument his faults such as dwelling on the ball and lack of fight won't change where ever you put him. If you are going with that argument though then why would you put Eisfeld ( a number 10) or mccormack (leading goalscorer in the league last year) on the wings?

We shouldn't be building a team around someone who has given little to support the fact that he will ever be effective in the English game and who has one year left on his contract and won't be signing a new one.

PSG finally beat Barcelona in the Champions League without PSG's Zlatan (out with a heel injury), 3-2.  I guess not having one of the world's three best players on the pitch that day made all the difference for PSG in finally winning against Barcelona.  The basic premise of this string is faulty.  I have coworkers who don't think Ozil is all that good.  They don't see how he is quietly affecting the game for Arsenal (or Germany). Bryan is simply our best player.  He should be in the Number 10 position, not on the sides.  He should be moving up and down the spine with players who are committed to advancing the ball, taking risks in the process, instead of this chicken ____ game of sideways and back passing.  We have quickness we didn't have last season.  We have dribblers and possessors this season.  Who don't fatigue at the 60 minute mark.  Just widen the field, put him in the center, put McCormack slightly above him and to the left, Smith up top center, and David up right.  Find a way to get two other mids to play wide and roam up and down.  Now you're dangerous.

I think we'll just have to put Ruiz into the  "Fulham FC Hall of Unfame", where his picture can hang alongside such heroes as Etuhu (a hero of the short pass), Marlet (for his legendary upper body unstrength), Large ( erm...err...) et al.

Their hero status to a man will be inversely proportionate to the amount they offered this club.

Why not move Juan Mata to center back so his team's fans can declare him "useless in the English game".  Also, I'm trying to remember when Etuhu or Marlet captained their respective national teams to the quarterfinals of the WC.  When was the last time any player who wore a Fulham jersey started for England?  Or made the quarterfinals of the WC for their national team?  I could go on, but your mind appears made up and locked down.

Well, for a start, a player who wore the Fulham jersey featured in a world cup winning side once......and another rather well known one got to the quarters...

...but this is about Fulham. The assertion that is often made on here is that Ruiz is our (i.e. Fulham's) best player.  He isn't. He so isn't , as they say nowadays.

Just widen the field, put him in the center, put McCormack slightly above him and to the left, Smith up top center, and David up right.  Find a way to get two other mids to play wide and roam up and down.  Now you're dangerous.

So you have Ruiz in Centre
McCormack in front to left
Smith up top
David to his right

& two other midfielders to play wide.

So thats your midfield & front 6 players......not sure who will do any defending in that formation?

Felix not playing Ruiz was a big controversy amongst fans and media.

Kit was immediately applauded for bringing him back into fold - and he is right in saying that no one should be excluded -but I think he has felt under some pressure to give Ruiz a chance.

But Ruiz doesn't seem to have greatly impressed, and other players might be better playing in his place.......but maybe Kit might think he should have more chances, or at least be on the bench.

Totally agree Zu.
David for me every day.

Ruiz has proven he can do very well sitting behind the striker.  I like to see what the big man Smith can do up top.  McCormack has actually been doing very well on the outside and should be free to roam.

As for defending we would still have a very comfortable back four plus we would add Parker and Stafylidis in the holding midfield positions.  Both Parker and Stafylidis can make the over lapping runs providing more players in the attack.

If the 4-2-3-1 is actually coached and played right in can provide both great defensive and attacking football.

I really want to see Woodrow and Hugo up top with McCormack playing around them.

That leaves 3 for midfield presumably Parker, Christensen (who does a lot of necessary donkey work largely unheralded) and A.N.Other who could be any of Hyndman, David, Stafylides, Ruiz or George Williams. Of those Bryan might well be my first choice.

Understand that, dont agree with the formation, but do see why people say that.

But what I was getting at, was the post I quoted does not make sense formation wise.

It's a joke that people put S*** on Ruiz. When this post was put up, Kit had been in for 3 games won 2 lost 1 with Ruiz in his 11. Now it's played 4 won 3 lost 1 with Ruiz in the side again. That is impressive even without taking into account the form we were in before they came in. Kit is obviously right, we're a better side with Ruiz in it.

Caution, caution. There will be a lot less time on the ball to shine against other sides we need to play, but he did his claim on a permanent place no harm at all tonight.

My point exactly when I said "now with time & space".

Norwich, Derby & the like will not be accommodating but tonight was time to enjoy the moment. We haven't had too many for a long long while

What I want to know is... WHERE THE HECK was this stuff 2/3 years ago? Admitedley I am now up north so haven't seen that many games this year (Ipswich and Millwall, that's it), but weren't we all saying (me included, I'll admit) that he would be WORSE in this league because he'd have less time on the ball.

Perhaps someone could explain. Is it the formation? His position? Has he bulked up and is more physical? What is it?

Don't know what game you were watching but I thought ruiz was quality some sublime touches and killer through balls added to a solid performance by him and the team. He has been outcast for some time under Mr cheese and he isn't at full fitness for competitive matches but tonight showed what he is capable of.
Great win just got back home.

Really depends on the opposition, Ruiz was given plenty of space today. In the prem when he played, most teams would close him down immediately. If Ruiz is caught in possession early on in the games, he usually goes on to have a bad game. Was a privilege to watch him tonight, backheel was excellent.

just getting in tonight.  Was able to listen to GJ (thank God) but did not have the chance to read the match day thread until now.  Very happy that Ruiz had a great game.  Also glad that Stafylidis was used as a defensive mid-fielder.  I am still not a fan of the diamond and wish Kit would move on to 4-2-3-1 but kudos to him and the players for having the game they did.

On wards and upwards, COYW!
