Title: The meaning behind your Username?
Post by: Friendsoffulham on June 17, 2019, 01:32:43 PM
We do this every now and then, however, with a few more members on board, it'd be nice to do it again before the season gets underway.

What is the meaning behind your Username, is it Fulham related, or something else?

Please let us know below:

I began my interest in Fulham in 1959, at the age of 11, and living in Stoke-on-Trent !

I have no logical connection with Fulham - I just liked the name !

One of my best mates and lifelong Fulham supporter, Alan Mills (Millsy) died some years ago, on the golf course. Both Mitcham boys and played football together in the Sunday Sportsman's league for many years. League HQ the Peterborough and drinks in the Palmerston, both in New Kings Road. Still miss coming down to the cottage with him and used his nickname to remind me when spouting about our club.

My name is Where I live and the fact that I love this club.
Let me bring a tear to the eye of some of you and rude comments about silly old farts on this board from others.
I have supported Fulham since 1949 attending a minimum of 15 home games a season for the first thirty years and as a season ticket holder holder for the last forty.
An hour ago I had one of the most difficult decisions that I have had for a long time when the club phoned to ask if I would be renewing my season ticket.
At 79 with a slight health problem and not enjoying the journey from Epsom on my own especially for midweek games reluctantly I had to say no.
If available seating looks reasonable I will still try to come to matches as the present management recruitment policy may seem frustrating but is nothing compared with my hatred of Bulstrode, Clay , and Marler Estates, and the stupidity of  Trinder who at least had one catchphrase suited to Fulham supporters 'You Lucky People!!'

My surname is shared with the late, great Bert Weedon so it's the inevitable nickname given to me from people of a certain vintage. When I first started using it, I mis-spelt it but through sheer apathy it's something I've chosen not to change. Indeed, had Bert still been alive I would have tried to get him to change to Burt.

Cheers

Logically after 40 years of suspecting that we were a selling club when Moussa Dembele the 1st was sold to Spuds along with CD I truly knew we were what we are.  For me the most disappointing sale in my history, I really felt for Jol over this one, we never saw MD in his prime, he could have been truly a legend at FFC.
But hey, that's life.  Hence I go for a beer these days and the craic without upset or anger. True support but without the emotion. Fulham sucked me dry (:-))
Moussa truly had gone ...

Had the nickname Sting that originated under unclear circumstances from my time at the University and it quickly spread to my football team at the time. It stuck, and among many friends I still go by it. Since it was allegedly taken when I signed up I added "of the North" that I have used before when Sting has been taken. It comes from me being from Sweden and is also a play on "King of the North" that was frequently used in a popular TV show.

Bill Taylor came from Scotland in 1959 to play for Orient and Forest before finishing his career with Lincoln City in 1971.
He arrived at the Cottage at the start of the 71/72 season as reserve team coach and became first team coach under Alec Stock the following season.
He left in 76 to coach at Man City and then Oldham and coached in the England set up under Revie & Greenwood.
Tragically he died at 42 of a brain tumour.
Whats this got to do with me?
Well, when he came to Fulham he was supposed to have moved in to a club house with his family but the house needed repairs and upgrading. This was partly due to the damage caused by the previous occupant (Vic Halom).
My Dad was chatting to someone connected with the club in a pub (possibly the Crabtree) about this and heard Bill Taylor was living alone in cheap hotel waiting for the work to be finished so he could move his family down to join him.
My Dad was asked if he knew anyone close to the ground who could put Bill up for a few weeks in a more friendly environment so he offered him my bed room and he accepted.
After he moved in he took me to several mid week games when he was scouting and other events and came and watched me play a couple of times.
I had just made my debut in the Athenian league at 16 and he was very helpful in giving me advice and encouragement.
After he moved on he popped round a few times for a chat and one day while he was having a cuppa with my Dad in the kitchen there was a knock at the door, I answered only to find Alan Mullery on my door step asking if Bill was there.
I was so surprised I said "yes, I'll get him" and closed the door on him, instead of inviting him in!
We lost touch after he moved to City, he was a lovely man and he made me a better player just by chatting to me and offering advice.
Strangely, I now live in Lincoln and have met several ex players who played with him and still live in the area.

Off topic but related to my story above.
Shortly after moving to Lincoln 4 years ago I was chatting to the man in the corner shop and he asked why I moved to Lincoln.
I replied it was only because my daughter was living here and other wise I had no connection to the area.
We started talking about football as the local team was starting to do well and I remembered I did have a very tenuous link through knowing Bill Taylor.
The man in the shop said "I knew Bill, I played with him at Lincoln City" and explained he was Phil Hubbard who I later found out was a highly regarded player for Lincoln, Grimsby and Norwich.
As the conversation went on I said my only other recollection of Lincoln City was beating them in 83 to win promotion and deny them the same.
I said Lincoln battered us that night and if their Captain hadn't been so stupid and got sent off for a reckless challenge they might have beaten us.
Phil replied "That was Steve Thompson, you can tell him yourself, he's just coming in for his paper" and I looked round and this big chap was coming in and it was him!
We all had a laugh but I don't mention it anymore when I see him.

SHAME!!!! Near Woodbridge by any chance?

FFC + my year of birth. Boring. Sorry.

No Ipswich, but Woodbridge is very nice.

Grew up in Woodbridge. All my family still live in Rendlesham/Ipswich too so I go often. Shame they got relegated as it would of been an easy away day....and 3 points.

Yep and with Norwich going up I have lost two very easy away games now.

Just for factual accuracy it was 1982 and although we scored first from the free kick following the sending off, they equalised and that meant we were not chapions but nonetheless got promoted. If we would have won we would have been champions but the draw meant we were third and Burnley won the title.

Interesting that you met the man that foolishly got sent off. I recall the game well and thought we were lucky to get the draw but I think their's was all passion and ours was based on skill.

As a kid Alan Mullery was my favourite player [and I won't reveal how old I was when I found out that 'ShaLaLaLa' wasn't his real name]. Then he signed for Spurs and my mother married a Tottenham supporter, though I don't think the two events were related. So it was Fulham one week with my dad then Tottenham with my step father. Go on the Tank....

Smashing story .👍

I don't but Its the kind of place I could easily bump in to her, I'll let you know if i do.
Its quiet possible to be in a queue at butchers or sitting in the barber shop and people just tell you their life story or ask you your's.
People seem interested and take the time to converse with you here.
Everyone I speak to about the game in 82 says they were at the Cottage that night which means the Imp's brought about 20,000!
We were lucky to get a draw and its one of the few times I can remember FFC getting a result when we needed it to achieve something?  Usually we would revert to Fulhamish and fail.

You are as you claim since legally the following applies depending on the particular country's nationality laws:

Countries operate the nationality laws in one, two or all three main ways:—

1.   Place of birth confers nationality
2.  Parental nationality confers nationality
3.   Both of the above — e.g. USA, UK

There are additional ways, such as naturalisation, registration and contractual military service (e.g. France: French Foreign Legion) and so on.

Hi Burt , been popping in and out haven't commented much if at all. Family are doing fine and Princess Grace is doing fantastic.
Hope you and your clan are in similar fetal ?

Great to hear about Grace, didn't want to be that direct about it in case things had not been so good! Very happy to hear about that though.

Just sent you a PM re the Burt clan, all good generally.

Mine's a bit weird given I've never stood in the neutral zone, just really an ironic name given the neutral zone and ultras don't exactly go hand in hand.

My old account on here was AlexW132, I think, which is my first name, first letter of my surname and the 132 was the number I was assigned at school, because for some reason we all got given numbers.
