Title: The most pointless chant.
Post by: Andy S on September 22, 2021, 12:20:38 PM
The most pointless chant ever has to be "stand up if you love Fulham" we would not have paid good money for our seat if we didn't support the club. So excuse me but I don't feel the need to stand up for that pointless chant

Personally I wouldn't stand for it, and I certainly wouldn't take it sitting down either.

Another one for this list is the Leeds' song last night "European champions". What a joke 😀.

Was it the Juventus chant that went up "stand up if you still believe" that had the whole ground singing. That got the fans and the players all uniting as one

I have to agree Andy, I always tell anyone who stands up in front of me to sit down so I can see, they take a look at me, think about it and sit down.

Yes it was and what a night that was.  The best game I have ever been to at the Cottage and I doubt it will ever be surpassed.  I am quite sure we gave the players a massive boost too.  I will never forget watching from the Hammy End as Clint's goal sailed over their keeper and into the back of the net and the whole ground erupted...

They need to make a sign above all of the turnstiles. No making noise and ESPECIALLY no standing up. Whippersnappers make your way to CFC.

All seating stadiums were brought in after violence on the terraces and is backed by the law of the land, if people don't like it get Parliament to change the law in the meantime it should be obeyed.

Perhaps the chant should be 'Stand up if you want to get on the nerves of those sat behind you.'

It was a moment in time. We were on our way out of the Europa. I think it started in the JH. It did have an amazing effect on everyone that night. It hasn't aged well though.
We could adapt it to "stand up, but we're too old now"

It seems that they already are. Trials are taking place at a few clubs this season to monitor the effect of having safe standing areas. I'm all for it.

So am I . I'm not against standing but, I want a good reason for it. I was always on the terraces before the 1980s but as you get older and cannot stand as long there is nothing like a nice seat. But when people stand up as the prospect of a goal approaches, I've missed plenty.

"5-0 and you still don't sing" is a particular pet hate. And I'm not a great fan of "we pay your benefits", especially as we pay the benefits of those who sing it.

Agree.  It's embarrassing when middle aged blokes chant this then look around with disappointment at those not standing and singing it too.  I'm not singing it because I'm not 6 years old any more...

I think you'll find almost all football chants are pointless and often a bit silly; not sure they need to be justified/legitimised. I think the fact this thread even exists, goes some way to explaining the lack of atmosphere at the Cottage.....

If you dont want to sing and join in, dont, but going as far as to call chants pointless? How much of a buzz kill can you be. I remember being 11 years old and those 'pointless' chants were some of the easiest for me to join in to

There's nothing worse than being told to sit down at a football match. If the people in front of me stand up, I'm standing up to see the goal. I ain't gonna be sitting down for the entire match. That's why the atmosphere is so poor at home games. People expect to just sit down and not even stand up or celebrate when we score a goal, it ruins it for me.

Bang on JP.  Whatever next, roller coaster style restraints on every seat to ensure people remain seated?

Look we've had this debate soooo many times. I'm all for safe standing as it gives choice to those who want to stand without inconveniencing those who prefer to stay seated. It will come, but until then those who stand and stick up a finger at fellow supporters whose view they block (and don't bloody care) are just wrong, just plain wrong.

Yep - it's plain selfish.  Basically saying  'Children, older folks, those less able to stands- who cares as long I can't stand up'

First it was expressing outrage at fans booing, then fans swearing; and now the legitimacy of chants is being questioned. Essentially a portion of our fan base doesn't like booing, swearing, standing or singing. Literally should get themselves down Shaftesbury Avenue and take in a show instead

Anybody who stands up in front of people who are sitting in seats blocking their view is an ignoramus.
That is why safe standing has to be introduced at football grounds without having to wear a hi vis.

I think you've conflated lots of different things there.
Booing and singing doesn't impact other fans.  Standing and swearing does.  Therefore it's not unreasonable to expect fans to be considerate to others around them  with their behaviour regarding standing and constant swearing.
To use your analogy, anyone that couldn't care less about other fans literally should get themselves down to Millwall or West Ham and take in a game there instead.

My favourite is "Oh when the whites go marching in".  My eldest son, as a youngster, was convinced the one line went "I want to be in that rumba" instead of "number".  We still tease him about it and sing that line at a game if we are there!

But all these things - booing, singing, swearing and standing, are things people have complained about on here, and this does maybe say something about our support, and it's lack of passion- whether you think that's good or bad.

Though, i think it's a bit of a sweeping statement, and rather snobbish, to say that fans of Millwall and West Ham don't have the same arguments about standing, if not about swearing, singing and booing.

Agreed. Why the f*** do these people bother going. If you don't go for the atmosphere stay at home and watch it on TV. No one will stand in front of you there or offend your ears with booing or swearing and other nasty behaviour. You even get replays.

TBH I think whgen thoe leeds fans sing is this a library it is actually a question because based on their other chants i actually do not think they know what a library is.
To just amplify. they said in their chants they were europeon champions, of what? They never were and remain not so I have reason to believe they are not completely at the races.
We should have responded with, no this is not a library because a library is where you can read and borrow books and other reading matter, this is in fact craven cottage the home of Fulham football club the best club in the entire world.

Now it says there's a video called "this is a library"
To be honest i don't attach much weight to either argument (the google claim was wrong and the video claim doesn't even make sense) but find it "admirable/amusing" that you're on your arse (as per)

To be honest i don't attach much weight to either argument (the google claim was wrong and the video claim doesn't even make sense) but find it "admirable/amusing" that you're on your arse (as per)
I go to games, i hear the song, i don't need to engage in a debate about it

Ah bless, backing out when wrong again.
Do google the phrase you believe it to be, and guess what all the answers come up as? The "this is" version. Weird eh?
I'd get your ears syringed perhaps.

"This is"? Exactly.
Have you forgotten which side of this argument you're on?
Maybe this another post you'll need to edit when you realise your silly error.

Statto,
Why have you put your War Paint on again, you must relax otherwise you will never live to be 100 and see Fulham win the FA Cup.
By the way the definition of Library as defined in the English, Oxford, Colin's Dictionary is....
A Building or room that contains a collection of books, periodicals and sometimes films and recorded music for use or borrowing by the public or the members of an institution.

Is this of course! Typo, but didn't want you to get angry again that I'd modified the post.

First it was expressing outrage at fans booing, then fans swearing; and now the legitimacy of chants is being questioned. Essentially a portion of our fan base doesn't like booing, swearing, standing or singing. Literally should get themselves down Shaftesbury Avenue and take in a show instead

A fair point.  I personally value decent and considerate behaviour over passion.  The reason I ended up supporting Fulham in my adult life is that I could actually bring my young children without our fans standing and calling the ref a wan### or opposition players c#### every 2 seconds.  Honestly, I couldn't do that at West Ham or Millwall (and have friends that support those clubs and won't take their  wives or kids).  Call it ''snobbish' but I genuinely feel our fan base is generally better behaved and more decent that most others - passion doesn't always equate to standing and swearing.

I've no problem with chants and I don't really think the term "pointless" applies. Surely all chants could be argued to be pointless but they're still an important part of the atmosphere. As long as they aren't racist or homophobic I'm fine with most of them.   Not sure what that's got to do with booing, swearing and standing? But if you're a complete numpty you probably think it's all fine and fcuk to anyone around you.
