I not suggesting we move for these players but just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were; would you bring back Harvey Elliot and Fabio Carvalho back to the club? Bringing Sess back worked out great, he's been a real asset for us. I always thought Fabio would end up operating on the left and Elliot can play a number of positions including as a right winger. Both are still young and have ability.

Harveys on massive wages and with ESR, Bobb, Palacios, I dont see the point tbh.
He is decent, but not lets pay him 100k a week decent

Same for Fabio. He wouldnt bring anything that we dont already have

If we could get Elliot for a lot less, I'd say yes, but it won't happen, forget the past!

I hope the Chrislain Matsima rumor has legs.    I watched 2 of his games from the 24-25 season and unless he's gotten worse, he'd be at the very least good depth for the position.   While I can't say for certain he's better than Bassey...he's taller and looks just as good with his feet against Bayern and Dortmund.  Tall guy.. good top speed, but not "really" agile.   Good with his feet considering his height.

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 28, 2026, 01:03:45 PMSorry but if we lost a world class 35-goal per season striker are people saying it wouldn't matter because if he hadn't been playing, Muniz and Cairney would have scored those goals instead, and we still have them?

No one with any common sense is buying that.

We lost 3 out of our top 4 goals+assists providers in Wilson, Jiminez and Chukuweze. That is massive and whilst Garcia covers some of it, we're overall worse off for attacking quality than we had last year, as it stands.

What people are rightly saying is that when you lose a goalscoring player it is impossible to say how many, if any, goals have been lost because his replacement and others in the team may have replaced some of those goals.

Nobody is suggesting that the loss of one or more goalscorers doesn't matter. Simply that it is misleading and disingenuous to state x left so that's y goals we've lost.

But in turn, I dont think anyone was asserting specifically that we were going to score "y" less goals this season, in the first place. The goals/assists tallies are merely metrics to illustrate who our best, or at least most effective, attacking players were - and that 3 of the best 4 are gone.

Palacios prefers to play centrally so I'm not sure that helps, and Bobb was already here.

Garcia is a clear swap for Raul at 9.

Chukuweze and Wilson haven't been replaced.

End of, really. I'm not seeing any half-credible counter argument to that.

If you've decided there is no other credible counter than it is what it is - but Bobb was already brought in to succeed Wilson as our starting RW, and looks like he's in a system that will suit him better tbh which is a key point. So for me Raul and Wilson have been replaced, just one of them preemptively + Palacios. It's not like for like, but it doesn't need to be to match overall output, given we play a different system now. I do agree we should look at another outright RW specifically, though, with us also losing Chuk who was a versatile piece, and it appears we're in the market for one should the right opportunity land.

But when people say "we have lost x goals from the team" that kinda is the assertion of that sentence as it is, and why people pushed back.

If those people had just said - we've lost some of our better attacking players and I'm worried the ones we've brought in won't be as effective, no one would take any issue with that and could have a discussion about wether they agree or don't. But the implication of such a sentance is that we're 'down' some set  amount of expected goals due to their absence, that we are not capable of matching as a collective already. I don't think that's the case personally. But as I say I do want another attacking option personally (for all Zepa has improved and may well contrubute meaningfully, I would be more comfortable with another RW option being on the table)

Ultimately though - the people intended to start instead of Raul and Wilson are already at the club, and with them a different system entirely. In Garcia, Bobb and Palacios and how our 10s operate now, we have a few players who will already rotate around the areas they were in in this new system, seemingly to good effect so far. Palacios likes to operate centrally for sure, but he is utilised in wide areas too and played some of his most impressive football out wide for Madrid. Our system is already seeing our 8/10 and wide midfielders drift around eachother and the likes of Palacios switching wide and across the attacking line, crashing the box in a way our 8s havent been enough in past.

As someone else points out, the greater concern for me is more so, can we balance this attacking system with good defence more than anything imo. I think we look very capable of creating chances. I just hope we can find the right defensive fit to not leave us too open.

To be fair Elliot is probably quite suited to our new set-up. Wide players who aren't pure wide players but can operate in tight pockets and triangles around the box. The reason Castagne has been starting and we are in for Bellanova is because these guys are really operating as attacking wingbacks that become our wingers when we attack. Another reason we (and I) like Nwaneri for the role is he likes to drift into central positions too and mix it up

If we want a pure RW as an option then Zepa's skill set is quite good for a byline hugger to switch it up. But seems currently our predominant plan A approach is players in the Bobb and Palacios/King mould rather than outright wingers (ala Chuk or Kev) Interested to see what we can get over the line to give us an additional option out there though

I dont doubt him being suited to us, I think he would. Especially since our RW seem to drop deep much more often than, say, Kevin.

Getting Elliott would be a luxury purchase that I really dont think would be worth the cost. And it would set Bobb back, who is younger and the one we should play.

Is £65k a week, and a 20% pay less transfer due to contractual obligations make him an expensive luxury? Personally, I think he'd be what we need on the wing, as he plays inverted, much like Palacios but on othe other wing, so I think this would be a shrewd purchase personally.

SimonDaviesEnjoyer

Elliot probably wouldn't come here for double wages, following the dog's abuse he correctly received from the Hammersmith.

Absolutely hell no to Harvey Elliot. Also no (but not a hell no) to Fabio, we already have a bajillion players capable of playing #10.

Newcastle United, Everton and Fulham are chasing Celta Vigo's Javi Rodríguez in the last week of the summer window.

Friday's edition of Faro de Vigo mentions Newcastle United, Everton and Fulham in a report focusing on Paris Saint-Germain interest in the defender.

PL trio keen
On August 18th, Sport Witness covered a report from Germany about the Magpies wanting to sign Karim Coulibaly. Three days later, Werder Bremen sold him to RC Strasbourg.

Newcastle United can turn to Javi Rodríguez as an alternative, with him also interesting Everton, Fulham and PSG.

The 23-year-old came up through the ranks of Celta Vigo's academy and made his first team debut in 2023. He played 90 matches, with most of them as a centre-back and only six as a right-back.

With four days left of this transfer window left, we are we fannying around trying to get a RB, a position we are do not need to upgrade urgently when we have more urgent positions like RCB and CM or RW?

Were in talks regarding multiple positions we aren't fannying about on a RB at all? It just one of 4 positions we've been in discussions over with multiple targets in each one, it doesn't detract from our ability to buy others

Contrary to seeming belief we are more than capable of working between multiple targets at the same time as we've shown before. Clearly the manager has decided what he needs for the system he wants to implement. If he has decided RB is a position he'd like us to spend on then I'm inclined to accept he probably has a good idea of what it is he's looking for profile wise.

CM looks likely to be Cestero or Angel by all reports but personally think this less a priority than other positions, much as I would like another of those lads brought in for depth. Best to accept these convos are ongoing and likely end up tied up in the very final days at this point, where alot of moves will play out and be sealed as the action comes to a close.

Remain confident well end up with at least 3 and we've done that plenty times before late in windows

I mean I guess that's fine but IMO RB is not a position we desperately need to upgrade this season, especially when Castagne seems to have gotten the hang of the tactics leading him to being involved in both goals vs Chelsea. But what do I know, I'm not AA.

sure but as ya say if Arbeloa does think we need fullbacks that suit what he wants then he's the man implimenting the system end of the day. I agree I like our RBs and think it suits Castagne more than tete - alebit he was out on his feet by end of the game. Either way we'll need 2 players able to bomb on as he wants. Tete's fitness concerns added to that not being so much his game suggests to me he probably will be the one who would make way ...IF we get the target we want (Bellanova) and I do think Bellanova is an ideal fit tbh who could improve our attack and compete with Timmy.

Add to this that Tete is on high wages, and Bellanova coming in would likely be on lower.

Chi_FFC

I doubt we'd see much, if any, benefit to the wage bill were we to sign Bellanova and ship out Tete.

According to Florian Plattenberg, Eintracht Frankfurts Hugo Larsson is in London discussing terms with two clubs, Palace being one of them. Reported price tag of around £22m

That second club is either us or Chelsea(?)
