And surely Mancini should have declared it in his tax return so he's committed a crime as well

I seem to have a different take on this than most, my question would be what do we all want long term and surely that is a fairer Premier league which in my opinion we are not going to get if Man City lose. The authorities will go back to feeling untouchable and everything will still be in favour of the big boys. I see the only way for change is if these rules are thrown out and that will only happen if Man city prevail. I hate cheats in any sport but the Premier league are cheating the rest of us of fair competition so City have only cheated the cheats.

Yes, so many dodgy businessmen from all over the world in football, we are so fortunate to have the good guys. It was criminally misguided to believe they would all abide by FFP or whatever they want to call it. But it is no defence for Sham City who have simply been criminal.

Allowing a team to get away with a decade of systematic fraud to the tune of almost £1b (which is more than FFC have ever spent on transfers in our entire existence) would render the integrity of football in the UK as null and void. They knew what they were doing to put themselves into a position whereby the big 4 became the big 5, and promptly backed FFP rules that would then pull up the drawbridge behind them and put them in charge of the cartel. FFP is crap for sure, but allowing them to win means that cheating over a decade is accepted and means that their cheating allows them to maintain a dominant role over the PL. Before they started cheating, they were getting pumped 8-1 by teams like Boro and that's essentially taken them from PL fodder to the dominant PL club in every aspect from academy (which you could also argue has now set them up with a conveyor belt of artificially inflated talent that they strongarm from other academy clubs because of again having a limitless funding pot) through to first team.

Quote from: St Eve on September 30, 2026, 07:18:43 PMI wonder if this is the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure other big spenders like Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal are breaking the rules as well. Clearly Chelsea were and because they were "cooperative " they got a rap over the knuckles.

Don't know that other clubs have done it in the same vast scale that City seem to have done. City are owned by a nation state, who have other reasons  for owning an English Prem football club than just  making money, and also have huge resources.

But, as Danny Murphy pointed out on Talk Sport, articulating my own thoughts,  the top clubs have always been the wealthiest, with the best, most expensive players, and it has never been an equal playing field, when the likes of Fulham - who FFP has maybe held back in  getting the top, most expensive players, face a Liverpool or Man U, and in recent years, thanks to the Saudi money, Man City.

I don't think a nation state should be allowed to own a  English  Prem club in the first place.
The problem is that people who are wealthy enough to own a football club tend to be involved in their country's politics and engage in lobbying. Especially in the States where we've seen the influence Silicon Valley has on the president. So to a degree if you're one of the mega clubs it's nearly impossible to avoid political entanglement.

Sorry but the fairness isn't just about finances here. Their results on the pitch were all conquering over that period. We have lost 18 games straight to them. Teams lost Trophies because of them. Teams were relegated because of them. All clubs that have toe'd the line must want them out of the league. Even those cartel clubs that have manipulated and tweaked the spend rules in their favour over the same period. Send them to Div 2 at best and at least allow their cash as they come back through the leagues to swell the coffers of some of the smaller clubs in the country.

It has been.  The team has been sentenced to fly coach for the next 5 away matches.  It will be devastating to the players.

Just reading that City Chairman was granted diplomatic immunity 6 years ago, which will make any effort to prosecute him very difficult. It is very likely that he could have done all sorts of things and get away with it.

Criminally yes

But in terms of participation in the prem presumbaly doesnt matter - they could I assume banish him from owenrship if they wanted if they were willing to take that fight

my opinion is it is all about finance, from my knowledge they didn't bribe a referee or do anything directly on the pitch that other teams haven't done to win games. They broke the financial rules to allow them to buy those players. I don't claim to be brighter than anyone else but it was obvious to me what these rules were bought in for at the very start and it had nothing to do with protecting clubs as they claimed, it amazes me that only recently ex players have now woken up to what's happening. When this is over we will continue to get screwed by the other 5 big clubs but because it's within their rules it's OK.

And that's exactly what the other big clubs did before them, they blackmailed the football league by threatening to walk away.

Any penalty that is financial in nature (fines in the millions) is meaningless.

What will be important to see is point deductions (which could also end up meaningless) and
demotion from PL and settling in 2-3-4 tiers down in the pyramid.

North West Counties Premier League.

How about this from former Man City chairman David Bernstein

"Manchester City's directors should step down after an independent commission found the Premier League club guilty of serious financial breaches, said former chairman David Bernstein, who described the situation as "beyond awful".

"I can't think of a penalty strong enough for this, really. I mean, this is absolutely terrible. I want to raise another question, and that is the position of the board of directors," Bernstein told talkSPORT after the announcement.

"Because the directors of the club, including the chief executive, who's been there for years and went through this period, are responsible for the running of the club in every respect.

"And again, if this was a public company of some sort, I think the directors with something as serious as this, would have to stand down or be suspended pending the outcome of all this ... appeal or no appeal.

"I don't think the present management can credibly continue.

But this is vastly underselling it - they lied so they could spend an extra BILLION over 10 years, something that we haven't done in over 100 years and is absolutely insane. Even back in 2009, £100m is with inflation closer to £170m today and that was 4 world class players at the time and takes them from relegation candidates to title contenders purely through cheating.

Some of the talk in the media is now saying, "Poor supporters, not their fault, how will the club survive if severe sanctions are handed out etc etc ".

I say, that's irrelevant, major cheating deserves major punishment!

Many clubs have faced extinction over the years and somehow survived and fought their way back to some kind of existence. (As we know so well)

How the punishment affects the City's future is a minor concern.
