Was we good or was hull city bad?

A common theme in hull right now is whether they had one bad day or whether the bubble has truly burst.

From a Fulham perspective, I feel they're saying was fulham good or was hull bad?

Im a little on the fence for each, maybe it was a little of both.

But after watching hull's other games, they have looked comfortable and a constant threat. But against us they looked neither of them things.

We also looked very good at cutting out passing lines and stopping counters (a huge part of hulls game but also what were usually quite bad at)

All in all, I feel it was a mysterious game, it didn't go anywhere like how I predicted and I can't put my finger on why.

FFC were clearly the better team and made Hull look poor.  Although FFC gets point deductions for not finishing at least three golden chances.  That said, FFC good, made their opponent look poor.

Maybe Hull City thought they only had to turn up to claim the points.
It's all on the day.
Sports Psychology comes into play in all sports.
Perhaps because we were bottom without a win.
They lacked motivation, preparation commitment, energy, perhaps it was even the fear of losing.
Games are won and lost in the head.
The right mentality no matter who you are playing.
Even if you are having a bad game you can still run around.
Always take one game at a time, as the next game is the most important, not the one after or the one after that.
A week in football is a long time, anything unexpected can happen between each match. As anything unexpected can happen on the day. You can never ever forecast a result correctly most of the time.
Goals win games, Goals change games, Goals save games.
Having said that, nothing can take away Fulham's victory, to a certain extent it was a 1 0 thrashing.
We turned them over despite flaws in game management during the match.
But nothing can always be perfect, but it was a much needed victory for morale, confidence and team spirit.
It doesn't get AA off the hook yet by any stretch of the imagination, although I am sure he slept better that night.
Next up Coventry City on their patch.
They are a wounded animal after last nights result, so i would imagine they will want to bounce back swiftly.
Perhaps it will be a case of who wants it the most.
A sterner test for Fulham FC but nothing to fear except themselves.
This match will be no picnic, we shall need warriors, leaders and fighters out there, and AA must have Fulham busting a gut and out pass, out play, out run and out score their opponents.
No prisoners taken, no quarter given, not one step back.

Mr W, can you elaborate on what you consider to be "flaws in game management during the match" ?

Well Woollie, a thoroughly amusing and erudite post. I was wondering how many football/ life clichés you could fit in! Can't argue with any of them!  I especially liked "You can NEVER forecast a result "MOST OF THE TIME"::wine:: 🤣

I was at the game, Hull simply couldn't get the ball off us, and as wasteful as we were in front of goal, some of our in play possession was absolutely breath taking. Hull were lucky they didn't get thumped 3 or 4 nil.

Were Hull really that rubbish? Hard to tell, they couldn't get the ball off us, had 22% possession and zero shots on goal, don't think most teams would have that day.

I'm usually critical of Fulham, but I'd go as far to say the football I see on Saturday was better than Silva's, and when we lost the ball, we hunted in packs to win it back, we were quite aggressive.

You can see why Hull do win games, they've got some big lumps in their side, and will score from set pieces, corners etc, but when you restrict them, they won't.

Hopefully, this isn't just a one off, and we take it to Coventry as well, because they too won't be able to cope.

Last season Sunderland turned up before Christmas, got totally bamboozled, but we only beat them 1-0.  I thought Sunderland were likely to go down, which kind of sets the scene for how much I know.

Hull were terrible.  Can't think of a single personal battle that they got the better of.  Shots, moves, passes even, all paltry.  Practically conceded midfield. Keeper did OK, he had plenty of chance to shine.

But it's not either/or.  We were really good.  Apart from finishing.  A lot of things have to go right to put on such a poor display of finishing.

Andrew

In answer to the op, imo, both are true.

We were outstanding but they were abject. I think their heads went down as they chased shadows.... There will be sterner tests, but on the day we played to our potential in very entertaining way. Let's hope we can replicate that sparkle.

Bobsffc

It is of course quite possible for both things to be true at the same time - and it is true that we were really good, and Hull were really poor.

One pleasing feature of the game was that, despite the Ipswich result and our position in the league, the confidence and positivity of the play was clear for all to see right from kick off. I was half expecting a much more nervy display with a lot of errors and misplaced passes - but that wasn't the case at all, either at the start or at any point in the match.

I think it does show that there is a mental toughness with a lot of the current team, which is a real positive.

Just also to say that there were questions in my mind about how our team this season would cope aerially with a big physical team...but in fact we dominated them in the air, and outthought and outrun them on the ground...all very encouraging.

AA is trying to implement a major change of our tactics at the same time that the team is being radically overhauled. Such transitions are fraught with danger, and will take time to take effect - but both changes are really needed. No doubt it will not all be smooth sailing ahead, but hopefully not every reversal will immediately lead to calls for the manager to go.

As far as Hull went, they looked slow and cumbersome, and committed error after error, particularly with their passing. As others have said, it's hard to see them avoiding relegation if Saturday's performance becomes the norm.

RaySmith

Many thought this would be a tough game for us, with so much depending on it and our record this season, and Hull's recent record.
But we completely bossed the game, with our fast passing posession, very skilful attacking play, and solid defending from front to back - did Hull have a single shot on target?

So, in answer to the question, I'd say that Hull were poor because we totally dominated them. But with only a one goal lead, Hull could have nicked a draw when they threw players forward at the end - they could have been given a late pen.
We need to convert more of the great chances we create, but feel this will come, with a bit more confidence and composure, from such as Garcia, who worked hard and found space for himself, but should have scored from good chances.
But I think he will start scoring.

Agreed, people have to find a way to make the win down to opposition being "poor" or "not turning up". Fulham didn't allow them to play well, we were superior all over the pitch.

People always seem to want to make it about the other team, cant just praise ours.

bobbo

It's simple hull have been doing ok so far even against recognised opposition . It was our sparkling performance that made the look so poor . I've got my fingers crossed we've got lots more to come .
1975 just leaving home full of hope

There were 3 big surprises from Saturday for me:
1) Hull are down as having 24% possession. I genuinely don't think they had half of that. Whenever they did have it, we hunted them down and won it back.
2) We only scored 1. Should have been 3 or 4. Really want Garcia to start scoring.
3) TC won a header at the very end that set Palacios away

I see that the Samaritans were handing out contact cards in the Hammersmith End- guess they were fearing the worst pre kick off?!

ffcne

A whole week to work on the training ground.
The mood and the belief should be sky high.
After getting the win and playing very well.
Coventry defeat on Monday night .Late night getting home.
We should be raring to go on Saturday COYW

FFC1987

Both. Their manager was clearly not happy with their own individual performances labelling it boys vs men, but that shouldn't diminish our own decent performances. My only negativity is perhaps, having dominated like we did, we were still only one goal in front and actually, Hull could of come back into it had we given up a cheap goal or say, a penalty decision went the other way so as much as I enjoyed the result and performance, we really do need to start capitalising on this good play which we consistently haven't done this season.

Very true, their player that went down in the box when he tangled with Sess, could quite easily have been given as a pen. That'd have been a huge injustice but we've got to start finishing our dinner a bit.

It's what I mean mate, I'm not suggesting it was a pen, but we know official and VAR are prone to mistakes so yeh, just illustrating the point that despite how good we were, and how dominant we were, it was still on a knife edge in that respect.

Especially with Kavanagh (who we have a weirdly good record with!>!)
