The Official Silly Season Summer Transfer Thread 2018/19

I would love us to sign Plea but he's not really the type of striker to fit our system. If anything it  feels like a bluff to hurry Newcastle up, as apparently Ashley won't give Benitez new money until he signs a new deal, so any money he gets will have to come from sales and Mitro is their money maker. Because of that I feel like we're perhaps sending a message to Newcastle but we'll see, either Mitro or Plea up front would be great but Mitro might do better as a focal point to our attack as Plea is only 5"11.

Tabby

Might not be an either/or situation (though I doubt it), Plea has been playing off of Balotelli (who I think is similar in playstyle to Mitro) a fair bit at Nice cutting in from the wing. Would be quite an upgrade on Ayite.

But, the most likely situation is that they wanted to throw in another name in their article.

Seems to me we want mitro and to strengthen the wider positions.

That's what the rumours seem to be saying. Nothing about a centre half yet.

No logic behind it, but I think we'll activate Fabian Schär's release clause with Deportivo once Switzerland go out of the World Cup. 4 million euros and he fits the profile of a "Fulham signing". Hope we're interested in Liam Moore as well.

Deeping_white

Allegedly Nice have received a £25m and £27m bid from either Toon, West Ham, Fulham or Spurs, so there's a 50% chance we've actually bid for him. Alan Nixon who usually knows a thing or two said on Twitter he'll have an update from a Fulham perspective tomorrow morning so perhaps we have actually bid for him.

I know we all bleeted on about FFP in the championship but does this exist in the prem?

If it doesn't then realistically the sky is the limit as to what we can spend, Khan has money and maybe the self sufficient hope is only reality once you have retained premier league status and so actually spending is a good bet to staying up.

There is FFP for the Prem. Think I saw somewhere on Twitter that we could bring our wage bill up to something like 59/69 million quid per year. MJG would know more about that than I would though.

Plus it would be silly to just go out and spend ridiculous amounts of money in the hope of staying up. QPR tried it and they're more than screwed now as a result. Think we'll be spending between 60-80m total, which is why I'd have doubts about signing Plea assuming Mitrovic is our #1 target.

Friendsoffulham

West Ham, Spurs, Newcastle and Fulham trying to sign Alassane Pléa. Nice have received two offers for the forward - £27m and £25m

I've been looking at casually since the play-off final without being able to find an easily digestible summary anywhere unfortunately.

Ed Thompson's site reported a £67m ceiling on newly-promoted clubs' wages for the 2016/17 season but in the latest edition of the Premier League handbook, it seems to me to say that limit has gone up each year and will be £81m for the 2018/19 season. I only skimmed the handbook the other day so may be wrong.

And I think there has for a while been a ceiling on losses of £105m over a rolling 3-year period - lots of press on this from 2013 when it was initiated, if you Google it. Again looking at the PL handbook, that still appears to be in force.

To give some context, our wages the year we went down were £68.5m, but currently, they're about half that.

If that interpretation is correct, I don't see either limit impairing us.

For what it's worth, balancing the risks and rewards, IMO it makes far more sense just to do everything you can, including spending money where required, to stay up. If you try to protect your position in the event of relegation you'll likely (a) get yourself relegated and (b) realise you've failed to protect your position anyway, because it's just not possible.

My sentiments exactly, At present we have to spend and spend big to add the vital players and depth to our squad.

Mr Khan will spend big I'm sure of it

Just under six weeks until the opening game now so hopefully a busy week in transfers is on the cards.
I suspect Mitro, Kalas and Piazon will all return (hopefully this week).

Targett has gone on pre season tour with Southampton, so that deal may be some time away if it's going to happen at all...

The difference is face to face you can continue to talk and follow up and try to get a resolution. Here people get involved in questioning and making statements and then you come back with a question or a reply and they never come back.
The art of conversation is largely lost in social media because many people who indulge in it like cheap shots.  You, MJG, have the ability to draw people out and in doing so also add depth to a debate with observations and insight.  Statto also does that more often than he doesn't.  It'll be a great shame to lose people who actually make this Forum what it is - a debating board - and not an instrument of flagellation for those who have nothing better to do than pointlessly try to shoot others down.

Holders

There are those who make points with reasoned explanation and open to discussion and there are others who make statements as if they're empirical and then resent challenge. I think that's the difference.

Anyway...

Would we be happy with Bryan, Mitro and Plea or Cavaleiro? I think that would be a great move. CB worries me and I like the look of Marlon who Southampton are chasing. I think a continental CB is our way forward.

Is there any chance we can keep this thread about transfer news rather than people constantly using it as a forum to argue?

So back to transfer news but not FFC ., from Twitter.

Villa want Burn. If they sell a few. Don't see Wigan selling him without a big fee. So difficult all round.

Cam Villa afford Dan Burn or is that just a false rumour? They surely can't pay 6 million for him

Who is stopping you?
I have just heard a rumour that another silly season transfer that Villa, whose financial plight  cannot even offer to employ free transfers are considering a bid for a player.....

I love the wording of that tweet - "Don't see Wigan selling him without a big fee. So difficult all round".  So not difficult at all then, Villa don't buy him. Simples.

Marcel_Gecov wants a house. If he sells his. Don't see Connells selling the house without a big fee. So difficult all round.

Alan, do you believe the deal to FFC is already done, or, is there still a few hitches?
