Yes we had 28 players used last season. But 9 of those played only 2-6 games.
Mitro only played 17 games.
Targett played 18

My point is, only 14 players of the 28 in the squad played 26+ games in the season.
Only 10 of those played 33+ games
And only 9 of those were starting 11.

So the the core team is only 10-14 players.

You don't need 24 1st team players in the squad.
That, imo, is a luxury of the top 6 teams and they have to rotate regularly to keep everyone happy.

49 games (playoffs) x 90 x 11 48510 (48363 with sendings off) mins those 9 players was 1128 which is 2.32% if rounded down.

in that case 2.33 % seems a bit more significant doesn't it

Its the spreading of that time across a number of players thats the point. Saying a team used 30 players when one of them only played a minute is wrong way of looking at things. You need to dig down. Those 9, without looking too deeply at it, I suspect hardly played a game together across their 10 starts and 27 sub apps. And Aluko accounts for 4 of those starts.

Surely a start is average about 80 mins, sub appearance maybe only 10 mins, so maybe about 12 games total

There was talk of getting Kalas and Piazon for £10m the pair.
Not sure how true that was, but if so I'd take both as squad players.

Posted it earlier, but it probably got lost in the squad size bickering. I have no idea about this player, but it is nice to see that the academy is getting in players.

We certainly do seem to have a great Academy.
Only thing is how many of them make into the team for very long or at all.
I'm sure there's a lot more over the last few years.
Dembele, Roberts,  Woodrow, Plumain, Donnelly, Evans, Briggs, Banya, George Williams,
Kavanagh,  Hyndman, Arthurworrey,  with only Betts and Sess making an impact
