Quote from: FFC1987 on October 15, 2024, 04:13:06 PMNot to wade into the Jay Vs Angus, but my 2 cents on Khan 'stepping back' from being as active on social media was possibly a learning exercise where, he was often, and rightly in my opinion, criticised for some of his more, spur of the moment posts. He has a lot of criticism over at the wrestling as well for some reactive posts so I just think he's learning from the 'less is more' approach to social media really.

He could of been asked (advised, or thought about it for himself) to employ a PR social media expert perhaps but either way, something he's been criticised before for, has clearly been addressed so I don;t see that as a sign of doing less, or taking a step back at all, largely for the ample evidence Jay supplied anyway.

That's my humble interpretation anyway.

Seems a plausible assessment. Albeit I don't think I read much from him during that time people got offended that I felt was particularly outrageous from him, especially given the context of what he was getting on the other end... but without knowing for sure either way - its of course possible he could have been advised to engage less by PR team, or maybe he decided he's not all that enthusiastic about dealing with the toxicity he gets all the time on x, either way as you say doesn't have to be reflective of his input internally at all.

In the interest of being clear, it's not about Me V Angus for me. It's not intended to be personal remotely, its about offering the direct sources of information that repeatedly have covered the way our clubs transfer process is set up and functions, that directly counters the baseless speculation we read on here that seems so eager to undermine someone's work who's clearly, at this point, contributed significantly to a lot of our success for years now (yes, just as that same individual by his own admission had definite bumps in that road, particularly in his early tenure)

I can't ultimately affect who, or if, it helps finally move on from such often baseless and usually negative speculation with a view to discrediting one individual. But hey, all ya can do is offer the direct sources of info and hope that it may help shift some perspective, even if ya don't hold ya breathe.

I personally thought some of his tweets lacked consideration for the fan base, but that's subjective so each to their own. But it's a good point you raise that perhaps the 'step back' from social media to mitigate the abuse he got. Could be a blend of all those obviously but it makes sense to me.

Fair enough, we all have a different lens when looking at that sort of thing guided by our own experiences. I recall reading through the sort o stuff he was receiving to prompt his messaging at the time and thinking his response pretty damn mild all things considered but appreciate people might see it differently.

Thanks for the reasonable engagement in discussion...meanwhile, entirely proving the point, I'm unsuprised as ever to find it lacking in other corners.🙄

As long as corners are up the other end and Fulham are taking them.
I also feel that Fulham have turned a corner now that the managers involvement in incomings is having a more positive effect and has increased the quality of player we are signing.

Quote from: jayffc on October 16, 2024, 02:07:36 AMIt's possible absolutely, I have no qualms with saying it absolutely could be the case... I'm just saying I'm yet to see anything that corroborates this from an official source at the club

Fair enough, that seems a significant climbdown from this having been "debunked" and "directly countered by official sources".

I set out the factors on which my opinion is based at the start of this exchange. I'm sure it goes without saying that I find them more compelling, or not actually contradicted by, anything you've set out.

Will leave it there.

Thanks for the more reasoned response

It probably could seem there's been a climbdown because as mentioned there's been some degree since then (possibly unconsciously) of reframing the argument away from what was originally being said in my first responses, or the type of statements (not just yours alone) that it was actually a reference to in the first place. (some peoples more extreme than others)

Having read them again just to check in with myself, I maintain the position was never stated nor intended that "it's impossible" or that it "couldn't be" the case - I am always open to new evidence or information supporting opposing views. But generally my stance is it just needs to be more significantly evidence based than whats been provided so far to change my opinion. Rightly one should assess and compare the validity or strength of it against the info we do have to the contrary. For me nothings been offered in this thread beyond opinion-based arguments that outweighs the multiple comments from both our manager and Tony talking directly about how our transfer process works, to be a compelling argument. Imo.

If someones really read all of whats been written in such articles and press conferences, one can then still say that they don't believe the words of those involved - but that still doesn't create any evidence to actively support a contrary point of view.

My position is that there is still no direct evidence around transfers, or quotes offered from anyone saying such things, that meaningfully support the claim that Tony is somehow *significantly* less involved or engaged with our transfer process internally, to the point that he's as discredited or undermined as he so often is. Thats all.

What we do have, is plenty of commentary, as provided, direct from those involved at our club, over multiple windows, that is directly at odds with such assertions. Therefore, the conclusion is clear for me at least. And I also maintain that I struggle to understand what drives such an active will from some to seek reasons anywhere they can find them for it not to be the case, in the face of such consistent statements to the contrary.

For me, on this topic, the factors you set out all require a large portion of assumption, speculation, and/or gap-filling to reach the conclusions you do, as strongly as you appear to. If you feel it's a compelling evidence-based argument then that's absolutely fine, and well just have to agree to disagree, I accept thats how you feel. I hope it's clear why I feel it isn't backed particularly by concrete enough evidence, and that is not remotely intended as a personal or emotional position.

Anyway, hope that clears something up somewhere and indeed am happy to move on.👍🏼

In all my time on this forum, you have a habit of posting stuff in an aim to wind people up, or cause trouble when there is a period of calm around the club.

Marco is doing great, yes, he's probably the club's biggest asset right now, but Tony has handed a lot of the recruitment responsibility to him, which was a requirement when he signed his new contract with us.

Tony, who is "Not bad for a Yank huh?!?!?!" merely signs players off now, if the price is right.

If anything, Tony sits his arse out in the US now, driving his AEW franchise, with little or no involvement.

Well if that's the case I'm just curious who it was then that came up with the idea of signing Marco and getting him to put pen to paper in the first place ?

Most likely Tony's dad, Shahid, who actually owns the club and is a self made and savvy businessman. But you know that.

Additional direct source on TKs involvement in the hiring of Marco:

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/3260885/2022/05/03/tony-khan-i-dont-want-fulham-to-be-a-yo-yo-club-i-just-want-us-to-be-a-yo-club/

"Marco was our prime choice," says (Tony) Khan. "He was always the guy we wanted. I did a Zoom interview with him. We talked philosophically. There was so much in common and I had so much respect for him. I'd met him only in passing before, when he was manager of Everton, but I felt so comfortable with him. For us, it didn't feel like a difficult choice."

He then goes on to explain his Dad then had a meeting with him on his boat in Portugal

"My dad had a really good meeting with him in Portugal," says Khan. "My dad was out there on Kismet (his yacht). They spent a ton of time together and made a great connection. As my dad said to me, 'It was just good vibes'. And I felt that connection, too.

"Marco saw the potential here and his vision made so much sense for the club. I immediately said to (chief executive) Alistair Mackintosh, 'This is the one'. That's all I needed."

....

Process seems to have been therefore - list of potential managers to meet created - meetings had with TK via video interview - Marco (who knows if any others too)  selected from those meetings and invited to meet with Shahid to get the seal of approval - Got the thumbs up from big boss - Decision made.

So again. clearly was very much involved.

Appreciate the additional context, but the rungs of the ladder with hiring tend to be the more basic stuff is done by the least qualified, because its generic, and then as you get through the rounds you deal with more senior and responsible adults..

Having a zoom with Tony, pales into comparison when put against later stages being with Shahid and on Shahids yacht.. there's a huge difference in accountability between the two, both in time spent, financial commitment to one another and the ability to get a feel of someone.

For me Tony is the first rung of the ladder, maybe 2nd, but the buck stops with Shahid in terms of the decision actually being made.

For me Tony is the first rung of the ladder, maybe 2nd, but the buck stops with Shahid in terms of the decision actually being made.

TLDR for those who can't be ar**d with the way I write:
Thats not fully what was being discussed though. What was stated was that it was *Shahids idea* to hire and sign Marco. And the evidence doesn't actually suggest that was the case. The evidence suggests the identification and suggestion to hire him appears to have come directly from Tony and/or Ali. That recommendation was then acted on and agreed with, naturally, by the CEO. So whilst he did the wooing on the yacht - the initial idea wasn't his.

----------

That's fine but that's not what was said though.

I'm not wanting to be an a** but it's another example of reframing the argument. The discussion was not about wether a CEO has the overriding decision and ultimate final say in who gets hired in a key position. That's perfectly fine, Nor did anyone suggest that the hiring process would have Tony or anyone else higher up the ladder than a CEO/Chairman (obviously).

The original comments were purely about whose idea it was to hire him.

"Well if that's the case I'm just curious who it was then that came up with the idea of signing Marco and getting him to put pen to paper in the first place ?"

"probably Tonys dad..." was your response.

-----

It appears, given the evidence provided, that the likelihood is, Shahid didn't in fact come up with the idea himself.  But that a list of targets were created somewhere between Ali Mac and Tony... Tony seemingly then requested a meeting with Marco - he was convinced by his interaction with Marco and so then forwarded his top choice/s to his dad, and so Marco then met with Shahid to see how he got on with him.

The implication is that if Tony and Ali don't select Marco - he probably doesnt end up on that boat in the first place. Given Shahid is also almost certainly less involved in actual football matters/talent scouting etc his knowledge is almost definitely lesser in that sector than TK (and Ali/scout/stats team) for obvious reasons - all the evidence seems to point therefore to the original idea not being Shahids which was the point you made to someone (unless I misunderstand)... though it indeed seems that Shahid then agreed with his hiring having met Marco and communicated that he also got a great vibe and gave the selection his blessing- at which point Tony says he told Ali to pull the trigger.

Additionally:
"Then as you get through the rounds you deal with more senior and responsible adults.."

This choice of wording is fairly revealing as to intention. Firstly it shows there is a clear hint towards a will to continue to paint TK as some reverse version of this, i.e presumably an irresponsible child. Secondly, It's also pretty damning of anyones input in a company hiring process that isn't a CEO. Im sure plenty can vouch for having worked at places where lower level management were highly competent adults that basically ran the show for sometimes borderline incompetent higher level C suites (not that Im at all suggesting this is the case here btw, I think Shahid to also be a very accomplished and classy character)

No one is arguing that Shahid doesn't have the final say as the man with the chequebook. But Tony clearly had a significant enough part in him being picked that he too, again, likely deserves more credit for his selection than he's being afforded here.

I don't expect any agreeance on the above given the two opposing predispositions really, so feel free to disagree, but just putting it out there anyway.
Sure were all looking forward to the end of the international break again 😂

Firstly. I personally didn't write anything till the end of page 3.

Secondly I didn't say you weren't entitled to, just that I dont see the need at all or what it adds when the rest of what's written here is actually on topic. We're here to discuss what's in the thread.

Youre on a message board. The other people here are discussing the thread topic, which is clearly a contentious one that splits opinion, and none of its been off topic til now...

Ironically as it goes, in this thread the people involved have largely found a way through it to be able to keep it relatively civil with eachother this time (despite disagreeing strongly)

Ya don't wanna read it? Don't.

Nice to be unified on something at least Angus 😂

Agreed, I thought if one actually read the interaction of the last couple pages there were perhaps plenty of decent talking points in there, albeit passionately delivered, without too much of it being "bickery" at all. But hey ho. 🤷🏻

I gave up reading this quire early on. All we know from the original post is that Tony had a zoom and was enthusiastic about Marco. We can also gleen to some degree that he deferred the ultimate decision to others.

It's that simple. You can insert yourself anywhere if you're the dads son and part of the business, but to be given the main responsibility to sort and give green light wasn't his.

Likely Ali Mac, who runs the club day to day, so makes sense, and Shahid, who pays the bills.

Notice how you never hear from Shahid or Ali Mac about these things, but the self publicist Tony always has something to say.. and we know that Shahid and Ali both actually run the club.. the reason for keeping relatively schtum about what to say tends to come from experience and knowing that you keep a low profile because reputation is a fragile thing, easily lost and hard to regain.

Sadly again this appears mostly opinion presented as fact with no direct evidence offered to actually support such claims. Followed by an admitted unwillingness to actually engage with the full counter evidence provided. I get it, the replies are certainly lengthy, especially if ya not actually open to the info or remotely interested in having ya mind changed.

Shahid obviously has to give the thumbs up as CEO. But TK only sent his dad one option to approve, such seemingly was his conviction he was the right guy already... he didn't interview anyone else because he clearly states he felt Marco was the man. When Shahid had his further meet & gave his blessing, as is normal practice with a Ceo, the article states TK turned to Ali Mac & said "That's the one , that's all I needed." . Directly suggesting all TK was waiting on was confirmation of the meet going well and that Shahid was also happy with the choice, in order to make the call for Ali to move ahead with the paperwork (cos that's his part of the job). One is ignoring this or assuming it's a lie to come to any other conclusion.

Also,Shahid is directly quoted multiple times in interviews talking about himself meeting with Marco on the ship actually. Can share them too but just look it up. So presumablythats also self-serving of him too to talk about his involvement (?). A pretty unnecessarily cynical stance.

"(Tony) Khan was named as vice-chairman and director of football operations of Fulham. He oversees the identification, evaluation, recruitment, general maintenance and signing of players for Fulham."

That's his job description.

Why therefore should we hear about transfer and recruitment matters in interviews, from them over him, when it's clearly in his job description as the front facing figure of the recruitment team, who's there to oversee the identification of talent and recruitment.

https://youtu.be/J8wB03IL_9s?si=uXYnMTb-mYU5BHre

See more footage of him openly talking about tape-watching with managers, frequent comms with Marco & the transfer process and stating that he ended up only choosing to interview one person for the job. (Alluding such was his conviction on Marco he didn't need to see more)

When signing for Fulham Silva specifically name checked Tony and Shahid (not Ali) So seemingly a notable enough part of his onboarding process to him too.

"I want to thank the owner, Mr Khan, Tony Khan and the entire football structure of Fulham Football Club, for the trust shown in us."

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/2684634/2021/07/01/why-fulham-turned-to-marco-silva-a-coach-who-still-has-a-point-to-prove/

"Silva had been previously identified during the club's ongoing due diligence and was seen as an excellent fit by sporting director Tony Khan and the Fulham recruitment team, particularly with regards to his playing style and personal ambition."

Multiple plates were spinning but Fulham's prime target behind the scenes was Silva, a coach to underline the ownership's promotion ambition.

Discussions with Silva were kept under wraps during what was a secretive recruitment process for the Portuguese coach. There was a determination to keep his name out of the media in case talks did not reach a positive conclusion. Shahid Khan met with Silva in Portugal last week and was impressed by his eye for detail and knowledge of the squad."
....

Sorry but this "you can insert yourself anywhere" is so unnecessarily belittling and I don't know why one is so eager to paint it this way. It's his job to be an active part of such things in recruitment and he is evidently directly involved targeting and selection. Clearly he did and does the job he's employed to do, has been doing it well for a while now and evidently very much takes pride in and enjoys it as per interview above.

But again,by all means if one still insists on choosing to ignore or minimise all of this in favour of sticking to ones own beliefs that doesn't seem to actually be backed by any inside opposing information then ok, that's a choice one can make.
I guess I just don't really get why one is so compelled to want to manufacture that picture in the first place, or minimise involvement based on personal opinion when evidence seems to be clearly lopsided in favour of him being an important part of the recruitment process...we have different department heads to oversee different areas, Alic Macs job at Fulham as per our website is to handle the clubs financial aspect, so no reason at all to blindly assume it was his idea either. I am still yet to receive a single meaningful actual counter or peice of evidence that isn't just unbacked, opinion based personal speculation presented as fact, from a direct or even solid third party source given in return, so what can ya do.

We seemingly dont get anywhere in spite of all this consistent messaging from the club it seems, so will move on, have a good one bud.
