Who is actually good enough?

For us to 'push on' and finish in the top 8? Ie, be better than at least one of the big 6 and far bigger clubs with repeat recent CL experience like Villa and Newcastle. On top of that, it requires being superior to every other club in the league, most of whom are better run and more ambitious (Brighton and Bournemouth etc).

I personally would argue very few players are good enough and that in my opinion, most of our fans are deluded.

Leno - past it
Tete - made of glass and blowing after 45 minutes every game
Castagne - championship player
Andersen - too slow and no longer good enough
Robinson - will never fully recover from injury
Berge (or as I call him, nothing Berge) - enough said
ESR - waste of space
Chukweze - one and a half good games in a a season at Fulham. No thanks
Muniz - not good enough never has been
JKA - waste of time

That leaves;

Starters: Bassey, Lukic, Bobb, Kevin, Iwobi
Bench: sess, Cairney, king, Cuenca, diop

That's my opinion anyway.

For the most part I would agree, the club have allowed the squad to become a bit stale. Would like to see a new GK, CB, RB, CAM, Striker, Winger as a bare min

Wouldn't say Leno past it but a position we need to think about for the future.
Tete we can only keep our fingers crossed where injuries are concerned. Still good enough.
Castagne I would move on. Solid Pro but very exposed against good pace.
Andersen having summer will have done him good. He is still good to go.
Robinson looks to have shaken off injuries which will be to our benefit. Still a good left back just lacks quality delivery.
Berge not his biggest fan and another I would move on or perhaps squad type. You need quick ball playing midfielders to go up another level.
ESR make or break for him personally next season. Technique vision is very good lacks a yard will be interesting if Arbeloa whether he suits?
Chuck again one I wouldn't pursue. Just think to much inconsistency in his game.
Muniz enthusiastic??
JKA think he'll be decent long term. Whether he can make impact straight away not sure but it could click and we have a very decent forward on our hands.
Starters Lukic for me should be squad type not a lot to choose between him and Berge.
Bench Sessegnon & King could see more first team action than being on bench.

Whilst I wouldn't call you whatever the opposite of deluded is, I think you may be a little pessimistic/misguided about our squad.
Leno - the single most important position I'd upgrade
Tete - almost unpassable when fit, perhaps 50% of the year
Castagne - with an international stand-in as replacement. Possibly our best player in last 8 games.
Andersen - never was quick but reads the game better than most. Still angry with him v B'Mouth. I'd start Diop every time.
Robinson - showed signs of improving after injury, are you a doctor?
Berge -i don't understand people that don't see how good the bloke is. Was the role Silva made him play ideal for him? No.
ESR - Struggled but has moments and touches of class. Waste of space is juvenile rubbish aimed at him.
Chukweze - Struggled after his mother passed away but had showed moments of brilliance before that. Good enough to be 1/4 wingers at the club.
Muniz - Didn't come good after the injury, but clearly good enough if you watch some of his goal reels. You don't just lose ability overnight, but you can lose form, fitness and confidence.
JKA - on what basis do you reckon he's a waste of time? From the few minutes you saw the 18 year old play in the best league in the world? Harsh/dismissive/laughable IMO. Exactly the sort of player we should take a gamble on as a number 3.

Those are my opinions...

I Ronic

Not only do I think that's harsh but it's downright rude. There is a staleness and lack of flow in the team which your individual criticisms don't address. Those players don't pick themselves or choose the game plan.
We're on the verge of a new manager and new ideas. Which may allow players on your list an opportunity to kick on.
Put your post up again in March. Where we'll all be in a more realistic place to judge your comments.

One thing I would like to acknowledge is that mine is a pessimistic and subjective outlook. I may be wrong about things. But naturally I don't think I am.

Great summary.. agree with pretty much every line except a tad harsh on Leno

Woolly Mammoth

A lot of players recovering from injury can lose their timing
Most never lose that first touch.
But the timing is different, and a lot of that depends on the conditioning.
The new coach will have his own ideas, and I would like to see youth given a chance, but it has to be balanced with experience, as that there is no substitute for.
You cannot plan too far ahead, in fact you cannot plan when you may end up winning a cup, it just happens, when the opportunity arises you grasp it, because another chance may never come again, or you have passed away before it happens.
I also am not a fan of waiting too long for a player to settle.
They are not ten years old.
If you think a player needs more time then don't sign him.
Managers don't get as much time these days so they should want players to make an impact asap.
That is where a players mental strength comes into it.
It's sports psychology, how much time and money have Fulham spent in the past waiting for some milky player with a soft underbelly to start earning his wages.
Judgement has to be taken seriously, each player is different, but at the end of the day, which players would you honestly wish to share a bomb crater ten miles behind enemy lines and which ones do you not wish to share.
Its not the man in the fight, it's the fight in the man.  🐘

I appreciate everyone is entitled to an opinion but do wonder why this always seems necessary to veer from one extreme to the other. We absolutely don't have a squad of superstars ready to challenge the 'bigger' teams. However, I do think slating a large majority of our players is quite disrespectful and calling people a 'waste of space' or 'Championship' is overly harsh.

We have a squad who have finished mid table for several seasons now, having shaken off the 'yo-yo club' reputation. Therefore, the squad are a capable Premier League side and finished where they did due to the ability of the players we currently have. Although occasionally smaller teams show it is possible to punch above their weight, we never seem to give ourselves any credit despite finishing above the majority of the 'other' (e.g not so big) teams. Brighton finished just a point ahead of us last year. Yes, they seem to recruit well to make a profit when players are sold but if the end result is only marginally better than us, why so much praise when we aren't really achieving much less? We can point to clubs like Palace who have had an incredible 12 months or so, actually winning things and agree we should be trying to emulate that, but we aren't that far off and the fact we are even suggesting it shows that. For me, it's the fact we are close but just manage to fall short each time that is the frustration. Of course we need to improve the squad to be able to compete but which sides don't exactly?

You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I do think most quite harsh.
My view:
Leno - I have been very critical of Leno last couple seasons.  But probably good enough to maintain spot.  But I do agree that maybe a replacement should be in the works.
Tete - Have always thought one of our best players.  Yes, injury prone.  But still top shelf when healthy.
Castagne - Has been pretty good in backup role.  Yes, will have occasional slip ups, but solid player.
Andersen - Disappointing season, agreed.  But can still be useful either as backup or starter.
Robinson - Still very good player.  Thought by now he would have improved his crossings, but I guess he is what he is and we live with poor crossings from this player.  Still a starter for me.
Berge -  Somewhat of an enigma for me.  Good defensively.  But offer nothing in offense.  Wouldn't mind seeing him moved on or in backup role.
ESR - Disappointing so far, agreed.
Chukweze - Jury still out on this player.  Could be really good.  Remember his Mum passed away during his stay here, could have had impact on his play.
Muniz -  Has had a couple good spells with FFC.  Team certainly, though, should seek a better striker.
JKA - Total unknown, and very young.  Could be kept and put out on loan.

Starters: Bassey, Lukic, Bobb, Kevin, Iwobi -  I would argue Bobb and Kevin still way too early to tell.  Both have shown brilliant 'moments', but very little end product and sustained solid performance.
Bench: sess, Cairney, king, Cuenca, diop - I would argue TC shouldn't be in the team.  And King still very raw and quite small in stature, looks like a garden ornament amongst the redwoods.  True, maybe good enough for a bench spot and limited play, but needs to beef up.  I do like Cuenca and Diop.

Nero

GK id sign Illan Meslier on a free good keeper just got hounded by the self-proclaimed best fans in the world because of a few errors, Good backup and could push Leno, save money for  elsewhere, and if a few half-decent performances can sell for a profit as only 26 but a lot of experience

I won't say what I think about ESR as I will get told off by Twig, but no player really played to their potential because of the style of play Silva was dishing up.

Bear in mind it's just my opinion.

I do like Cunca and Diop.

WindyCity and SerbianLad are my two favorite posters and I don't really disagree at all with WC's assessment here.

Leno - Agree he still starts but we need a quality backup to push him forward or out!
Castagne - Hoping Arbeloa gets his Int'l self out of him, but also not opposed to getting some $$ in for him.
Robinson - Watching him this WC makes me think he's back to his old self, very athletic, wildly off the mark crossing.
Berge -  Like Chestnuts above, hoping Arbeloa gets his Int'l self out of him, looking forward to it!

Bench: Big fan of Cuenca and Diop, too.

Overall, I'm excited about our prospects for next season. Loved Marco but can't wait for this new era!

Quote from: ffcthereligion on June 26, 2026, 12:25:07 PMFor us to 'push on' and finish in the top 8?

That leaves;

Starters: Bassey, Lukic, Bobb, Kevin, Iwobi
Bench: sess, Cairney, king, Cuenca, diop

That's my opinion anyway.

I won't say what I think about ESR as I will get told off by Twig, but no player really played to their potential because of the style of play Silva was dishing up.

Bear in mind it's just my opinion.

No reason you can't share your thoughts about ESR just because possible forum member retort.

Granted, your opinion, but you can't solely judge or rate a players' performance because of the managers' game plan.  At some point, regardless of that game plan, a player needs to step up and show the quality he has.
