The Final Challenge

Thursday 12th May 2011

Fulham's Under 18s are just one match away from potentially clinching the Premier Academy League national title.

The Whites will take on Everton at Craven Cottage on Friday (kick-off 7pm), having booked their place in the Final with a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Sunderland on Tuesday evening and Manager Kit Symons is expecting tough encounter against the Toffees.

"They're a very strong, physical side," Symons told fulhamfc.com. "Against Aston Villa in their semi-final they played three third year outfield players and a third year goalkeeper. In fairness to them, they've got a couple of boys away with the England under 17s. They are very experienced, strong and physical but they've also got some good players.

"If we can match them physically, we give ourselves a good chance. But we're under no illusions; they'll be fully committed. You're not going to get an easy tie in a Cup Final, so we know it's going to be very, very difficult.

"But when we get the ball down and play, we can take on anybody on the day. With the players and team ethic we've got, we can cut through teams and cause anyone problems."

One year ago

by Tor on May 12, 2011

Remember that? As I write this, that strike was almost exactly one year ago. Remember the hope it brought? Together with the excitement that we could've been seeing history in the making – Fulham Football Club's first major trophy. Sadly it didn't quite happen. Not this time anyway. But the achievement should never be forgotten and I think for most of us who were lucky enough to be there that night, it'll stay in our memories forever. Perhaps we'll have new experiences to add to it, perhaps not.

I look at fans of some teams who are regularly competing in Europe, both the Europa and Champions Leagues, and I wonder if it ever loses its appeal. Does it ever become "just another game"? Another trek to another ground and it'll be on telly anyway so we might as well just watch it down the pub. I think I'd hate that. It's an honour and a privilege to watch your team participate in one of the greatest competitions. As my boyfriend said to me on the phone whilst I was walking from the Nordbank Arena to the coach "How many people get to see their team play in a European final?". It's something that many dream of but only a select few get to do. I'll be honest, I never thought I'd be one of them.

This is only a short post. We all have  our own memories of that night, whether we were there in Hamburg or watching from wherever we call home, you don't need me to jog them for you. Enjoy though. I hope they still make you smile as they do me.

Here's to the next one...

That was ugly. Losing at home to in-form Liverpool may not have been the most stunning result of the weekend but doing so by letting in five goals at home was, most definitely, a result to raise the eyebrows. Fulham had been looking like one of those mid-table Premier League teams who were on a roll and didn't want the season to end. The exact opposite was true on Monday and any time you see a keeper as normally reliable as Mark Schwarzer chucking in goals, you know it's time to be worried.

Fulham FC interested in FC Utrecht's Kevin Strootman – Dutch Eredivisie news

Posted By:  Michael Anderson

FC Utrecht's midfielder, Kevin Strootman, could be on his way out of Dutch Eredivisie at the end of the ongoing season, as Fulham FC have shown great interest in taking his signature in the upcoming summer transfer market. Reports suggest that Mark Hughes, the Whites manager, is looking to add young blood to his squad and Strootman seems a perfect addition to his side.

The 21-year-old midfielder has attracted interests from top European clubs with his sublime performances for the Utreg this season. The Dutch International has caught attention of many Premier League scouts, who watched him in action on many occasions.

The Dutch International started his professional career with Sparta Rotterdam in 2008/09 season. He played 72 matches and scored eight goals before joining the Utreg this year in January transfer market. The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest Dutch prospects and was recently given a chance to represent his national team for the first time in the 3-1 victory over Austria in February.

The highly-rated midfielder's current contract runs until the summer of 2015. However, reports suggest that an offer in the region of €8 million will be needed to lure him away from the Eredivisie outfit. The Dutch International has only made 12 appearances for the Utreg so far, but an offer to play in the Europe's top football league could prove too tempting a proposal to turn down.

Rumours are also rife that the Whites have keenly observed the Utreg midfielder, Dries Mertens, and the English Premier League outfit are considering a bid for the attacking midfielder in the summer transfer market. Mertens has played 34 matches and scored six goals since his arrival at Stadion Galgenwaard in the 2009/10 season.

It seems like that the Whites management are eager to add fresh blood in the summer transfer market and they have reportedly set their sights on two of the Utreg young guns. However, the Cottagers management will have to raise their transfer budget if they have any intentions of adding the youngsters to their ranks.

Arsenal v Aston Villa
St Andrews
Kick-off: 16.00 BST

How will Birmingham's players and fans have reacted watching Fulham shipping five against Liverpool on Monday? Encouraged? Or fearful of a mighty backlash?

Backlash or no, Liverpool showed how Fulham's defence could be exposed with good control and intelligent movement, and it is a lesson Alex McLeish's side will need to heed as they look for the four points that will secure Premier League status for next season. (That said, three probably should be enough.) James McFadden, Scott Dann and Obafemi Martins are all missing.

Fulham have rattled along like a old motor at times this season, but having put together a decent run of form to steer themselves away from trouble, they look to be flagging a little as the campaign winds down. Mark Hughes has no new injury worries.

Just two games to go and after being so desperately close to relegation ourselves in 2007 and 2008 Fulham fans can relax and leave the nailbiting to others.

In fact, as we contemplate a decade in the top flight, our modest 'little' club has largely evolved into a reasonably solid mid-table side. We try to play the game in the right way, we can be pretty entertaining on our day at home, and I can't think of any finer ground than Craven Cottage to enjoy my EPL football. Only mid-week games, especially in winter, can be a bit of a chore - London traffic and the necessity of a long walk up to the ground being a small price to pay.

With Mark Hughes yet to confirm his long term commitment to the club, the summer could be full of surprises - perhaps pleasant, or not. Today marks the anniversary of our Europa League final match in Hamburg. Few streaming away from the ground that chilly German night would have been contemplating Roy's departure before most of us had even hit the beach. That left us heading for a summer tour of Sweden last July managerless with the CEO on a fruitless mission to Amsterdam.

The only strange thing about football is that stranger things don't happen more often. It's a game Nietzsche would surely have embraced. Sturm and Drang is the currency on a weekly basis. Equilibrium in the workplace rarely the order of the day, even more so in the modern era of player power and freedom of contract. With more than 30 professionals on your books at any one time your executive is probably juggling a third of player contracts, with all the attending third party haggling and brinkmanship that entails.

So before we get down to the basics of previewing our away trip to Birmingham, just for fun it's time for you dear readers to stand up and be counted. Below a simple Q & A:

a) Who is your Fulham player of the season?
b) The budget allows a contract for either Zoltan Gera or Eidur Gudjohnsen. Who gets it?
c) Who would be your keeper to start in August - Schwarzer or Stockdale?
d) Are you happy to see Hughes extend his contract?

Freiburg waiting for acceptable offer for Premiership target Cisse

12.05.11 | Dave Williams

Papiss Cisse, a reported target for Blackburn and Fulham, will remain a Freiburg player until the German outfit receive a suitable offer for the striker.

Freiburg have declared that no bid has yet been lodged for the 25 year old who has scored 22 goals this campaign.

An offer from Rovers has not met Freiburg's requirements, with the player believed to be valued at around £13.5million.

Cisse is also under contract at the Dreisamstadion until June 2014 and Freiburg do not want to sell him during the next transfer window unless they have time to bring in an adequate replacement.

General manager Dirk Dufner told Sport BILD: "Papiss Demba Cisse definitely has the idea of playing for a bigger club at some point in his career.

"Still no club has offered the certain amount of money required.

"Should this become true at a very late point in pre-season and shouldn't we be able to sign a replacement then, Papiss will have to stay on."

Tottenham could qualify for Europa League through Fair Play list

12.05.11 | tribalfootball.com

Tottenham may not need to beat Liverpool on Sunday to qualify for the Europa League.

The London Evening Standard says Tottenham could qualify for next season's Europa League regardless of whether they pip Liverpool to fifth place after the latest Fair Play table was announced by the Premier League yesterday.

Chelsea top the list but have already secured Champions League football next season. Fulham are tied for second place with Spurs, who would take the additional European spot - expected to be awarded to an English club by UEFA - if they finished level courtesy of their higher League position.

The latest figures are up to April 30, since when, Fulham had five players booked in Monday's defeat to Liverpool while Spurs had three yellow carded against Blackpool on Saturday and only Steven Pienaar disciplined in last night's 1-0 loss against Manchester City at Eastlands.

Clint Dempsey Move to Paris Saint-Germain Would Be a Great Move

By Andrew Jordan(Featured Columnist) on May 12, 2011

On May 10, news surfaced that French giant Paris Saint-Germain, during this summer, were to be bought by Qatari investors over this summer, which at this time appears to be a very realistic possibility.

If the Qatari investors by the team, it has been reported that they will inject at least 50 million euros for the next three years into the transfer market for PSG.

Currently, PSG have a massive problem with their books, with an annual loss of 19 million euros and have not been able to win France's Ligue 1 since 1994.

Since this news has came out that PSG will have new ownership, there has been speculation over who they will try to get. And it appears that PSG are ready to get one of America's best footballers in England.

That player is none other than Clint Dempsey, the owner of an American record 12 goals in the Premier League this season and the holder of 33 career goals in the EPL, more than any other Fulham player in their time in the Premier League.

However, it appears that manager Mark Hughes has his eyes set on young Italian striker Pablo Osvaldo during this summer's transfer market.

Considering the fact that Dempsey plays the same position as Osvaldo, and one could see that there is a strong possibility that Dempsey's days are numbered at Craven Cottege.

Now many Americans (and Fulham fans) would be opposed to this move for a variety of different reasons.

For starters, fans would contend that Dempsey's game is perfectly suited for the Premier League, which is one of the most physical football leagues in the world.

Other fans would contend that his profile would diminish should he decide to go to France because Ligue 1 obviously is not as strong as the Premier League.

However, this potential move for Dempsey is one that he should not ignore whatsoever.

For starters, a move to France will allow him to become a more technically sound player instead of just being a physical force.

This move will also help Dempsey out tremendously financially. With this move, Dempsey will now be able to make a lot more money than he would be if he were playing for Fulham. Considering the fact that Dempsey is now 28 years old, this would be the perfect chance for Dempsey to earn a massive contract for his services.

But despite the finances and the fact that he can be a better player, Dempsey will be able to get another chance to play in either the Champions League or in the Europa League.

Of course, arguably the greatest moment of Dempsey's career came last year against Juventus in the Europa League when  Dempsey was able to lob a shot into the net, advancing Fulham into the quarterfinals.

This move would also give Dempsey the chance to play at a big club and get a great amount of playing time, unlike if he moved to a club such as Liverpool where he would not be able to register enough playing time.

Dempsey would be able to play in the Champions League for a club that will have a good chance of making a splash in Europe.

If this move was ever going to pan out, we could see PSG finally start to fulfill expectations and can get back to its era of success in the mid-1990s

A Welcome Return

Thursday 12th May 2011

After a major injury setback at the start of his Fulham career last summer, Philippe Senderos is fighting fit and ready to battle for a place in Mark Hughes' starting eleven next season.

Senderos made his Fulham debut in the Club's 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light at the end of April and the former AC Milan and Arsenal defender revealed to fulhamfc.com that he is simply happy to be back doing what he loves.

"I'm really pleased to be back," Senderos told fulhamfc.com. "I'm training with the team 100% and getting my first game [against Sunderland] was a big thing for me. When I came back from the 2010 World Cup I got injured, I ruptured my Achilles, so I didn't have time to show anything to the new Management.

"As soon as they arrived I had to introduce myself and show that I was committed to the cause. It's hard for an injured player to show that you're part of the team but I tried to do that from the beginning and show that I would be working as hard or even harder than the other boys.

I think I got a little reward [against Sunderland] and everyone was pleased with the work that I put in. I've been waiting a long time - I was thinking whatever comes for me this season is a bonus but now that I've played my first game, hopefully I can continue from it."

Senderos is not underestimating the challenge that awaits him next season when it comes to earning a berth in the heart of Fulham's defence. With Aaron Hughes and Brede Hangeland having formed a formidable partnership over the past few seasons, Senderos' return from injury offers Mark Hughes an impressive array of quality and experience in defence to choose from next season.

"Here at Fulham I have a very good and experienced partnership in front of me," the Swiss international explained. "The team defends really well, you can see that we don't concede many goals. I will have to keep pushing and see if I can offer something different. I'm happy to have at least contributed this season and hopefully I can build on it next season."

QPR plan swoop for Fulham winger

By Paul Warburton

May 13 2011

QPR are eyeing up the chance to set £1million-rated Zoltan Gera free from his Fulham hell.

The out-of-favour Hungarian has made it plain he wants first-team football next term, and newly promoted Rangers have already been in touch about making the move up Fulham Palace Road, according to sports agency Nemzeti Sport in his home country.

Gera has become increas-ingly sidelined at Fulham, with only 10 Premierships starts this season, and although Whites boss Mark Hughes claimed he wanted to keep the former West Brom player, the midfielder was not even on the bench for the past four games, including Monday's 5-2 drubbing at home to Liverpool.

But if Rangers are truly interested in Gera, they face a fight to make him one of Neil Warnock's first recruits to his Premiership squad.

Agent Vladan Filipovic insists there is a host of clubs in for the 32-year-old, including lucrative offers from abroad.

He said this week: "A lot of English teams asked me about Zoltan Gera, among others QPR, but this means nothing because we haven't negotiated."

However, a short hop north of the borough would save Gera getting the removal men in, as well as continuing his seven-year stint in English football.

Lawro's prediction

Birmingham v Fulham (1600 BST)

If there were three or four more games left this season than there are then I think Birmingham would probably go down but, as with Blackburn, I think they will just about be safe.

This is a great time to play Fulham too because, as good as Liverpool were in their 5-2 win at Craven Cottage on Monday, the Cottagers were woeful defensively. They are normally nothing like that.

Fulham manager Mark Hughes will want a reaction from his side at St Andrew's but I can see Birmingham edging this one to take one step closer to beating the drop.

Prediction: 2-1
