When teaching American 13-year-olds living in England in 1990:

Student 1: Why is it England when the colonies were settled, and Britain during the revolutionary war?

Me: There was an act of Parliament that made England part of Great Britain.

Student 2: I don't understand that, Mr. H., what's so great about Britain.

Student 3: It doesn't mean "wonderful," stupid. It means "big." You know: Great Britain, Great Depression.

This is known, in the trade, as supplemental pay for teachers.
