Being a bit lazy here but I've got a question regarding the commission charged by online betting firms.

I recently signed up with BetFair online and placed a low value bet on West Brom v Fulham being 0-0.

Huzzah! I won almost 30 quid but was surprised to see that BetFair take a percentage commission on my winnings. Should have read the small print but my question is whether you can elect to pay the commission up front on the bet instead of on your winnings (like you used to be able to do with the tax in betting shops)?

It wasn't much but enough to make me think - stuff the online account I'll just use a bookies.

Cheers in advance.

betfair are a betting exchange i believe, rather than being the bookies, so that's how they make their money. They're not taking a position on the bet

Chopper

Ah. So if I tried a different company I may not have to pay commission?

I don't think so, but don't quote me on that

I use unibet and I don't think I ever paid a commission on my winning.

but you wouldn't get such good odds from a proper bookie.

Well - I've been a bit disappointed with the odds they give on multiple accumulators ... but maybe I'm just expecting more than I should.

Will shop about a bit.

And read the terms a bit closer!

Cheers Burt - I was at work earlier, so not entirely lazy, but I'll read that now.

Actually their commission rates don't seem too bad - I'll just need to compare odds with what I might get in the bookies for a bit.
