I notice that Italy are level on points with Croatia and with a worse goal difference and yet they are a place above Croatia. Does anyone know why this is?

I think it is a) matches in between themselves (1-1) and b) FIFA ranking (Italy < Croatia). Don't shoot me if I am wrong!

I've found the ruling and I have to say it's ludicrous. Goal difference counts for nothing. http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/news/newsid=1818000.html

actually, goal difference is the 2nd tie breaker, so it definitely counts for something.

For those who are young, for years English leagues used a complicated compilation called "goal average" to eliminate ties in tables. Goal DIFFERENCE is relatively new.

OMG "goal average"! Well you'd need a slide rule to calculate that!   :011:

SG

Us older ones used log tables to calculate it but the likes of HD probably an abacus  :dft012:
