Pearce is about to face the media and be questioned about leaving out golden balls.

So, Stu, why didn't you pick golden balls?

Stu..." he aint good enuf"

end of press conference.  Seriously, who cares? Football, tennis etc.  inthe olympics. Lets have darts next.

Mitch

Footballs been in the olympics for ages hasn't it?

Jack Fulham

I don't understand why Beckham was expecting to be picked?

I don't understand why so many people seem to think he should have a place just because they like him!

jarv

Yes, Football has been in for ages. It used to be for "amateurs" however the iron countries used to send their soldiers, apparently amatueurs but they all played for dinamo zagreb, moscow dynamo etc etc.

I must admit i was surprised he was expecting to be picked

...perhaps he was thinking that earning a reputed £500,000 per week overseas doesn't necessarily mean that your amateur status is under threat..... :001:

Perhaps he should just go and get another tattoo and a different hair style and forget all about it.

The bigger question should be 'why is Giiggs in'?

Me-ate-Live, innit??

There are alot of tickets for the football unsold, and the view is they will probably remain so because  Beckham is not involved, he would have been a bit of a draw .................even I would not mind seeing Becks play one last time.
He was very involved in the bid and the amateur status thing is no longer a  real consideration.

Is anyone going to the football or  have tickets  for any of the events ???

MJG

Why should Richards be picked when he turns down being on standby for England?

Have you tried getting a ticket for a GB match because they are apparently sold out even without "Brand Beckham" being included, he doesn't deserve a place in the side just like he didn't really deserve his final 15 caps!

Me, Mrs S and Junior are at Wembley on the 29th for a mens qualifier double-header. Think it's Senegal v Uruguay followd by GB v United Arab Emirates.

Also going to the women's football final. Quite excited about that - I enjoy women's football too, and it's a medal ceremony.

I've got tickets to the semi's at Wembley... hopefully we will see Team GB. Hopefully.

In terms of Becks, I'd rather see Nathan Redmond from Brum on the right wing. Much more excitement!

Olympic football seems pointless to me.

It's not the World Championship and teams are hybrid almost exhibition teams. Mostly kids with a few deserving elder statesmen.

On that basis Beckham should have been picked as an icon.

No international football association gives the Olympics any priority. IMO the games should be limited to sports like athletics and swimming where it IS regarded as the supreme occasion and minority sports that never get any other exposure.

Not the likes of football and tennis.

This isn't strictly true - other countries DO give it importance. FIFA see it as a u21 world cup style competition and that is why they dont have a separate u21 WC.

It is not taken seriously by the British, but the Spanish, Brazilians, Italians, Germans and the Argies all use it to train players to get used to international tournaments.

For this reason, I can completely understand why Beckham has not been included. I dont think it is an unfair call either - he chose to go for the money and move to the MLS, so he can't complain when he is overlooked for developing players or those getting regular game time in the Prem (Giggs).

Olympic football is a good chance to give young players a chance to experience tournement football for the first time, particularily with a World Cup on the horizon.

As for Beckham, he's simply not performing at a high enough level to deserve a place, and that is all that matters.

I also agree with the comment about his last 10-15 England caps, 10 minute cameos to try and get him up to 100 and "legend" status. Well, one goal against Greece in a qualifier and a poor record in Tournements suggests his not good enough to clean Charlton, Moore, Hurst et al's boots!
Never ever bloody anything ever.

He may not deserve to play in the Olympics but this paragraph is tosh. He did so much more than one goal against Greece, it's a sad day when a player like David Beckham gets stick for all he did for England. At least when he was captain he wore it with pride and led by example on and off the pitch.

The first statement may be a little harsh, but I certainly think the last four or five caps were more about brand Beckham than England. This does not denigrate his earlier efforts for England, but those last few caps, in my eyes, did cheapen his contribution to the cause.
Any fool can criticise, condemn and complain, and most fools do.

jarv

The point that it is an under 21 tournament, I admit, does give it some credibility, As far as over age players going, surely, based on merit and on the field performances DANNY MURPHY should have been the first pick.

I have watched Beckham in MLS games and he just strolls around on the right wing and takes free kicks and corner kicks. Hardly inspiring.

Although, he got involved this week-end, tried to start a fight and several team mates were holding him back. Then he came back for more!!! :58: All at the end of a 4-3 loss.

mhatc

The olympics are 23 and under with 3 players allowed over that age
