NFR: Kingston

I generally avoid shopping but found myself in Kingston on Sunday as a pressed man.  An agreeable enough location & certainly far superior to my other local Croydon.  Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse when I walked past a blue mess superstore - whatever next. Having recovered from that nauseous episode, it dawned on me the numerous fans of theirs I'd seen wandering around town were in fact missing their game against Brentford which was the early kickoff.  I appreciate not all can afford their exorbitant prices but shouldn't they be listening to the game on the radio or doing the modern equivalent?  Perhaps they were all recording the game for later?

Maybe you should have told them Brentford were 3-0 up and seen a) whether they knew what you were talking about and b) looked upset!

...I live up the road from Kingston, and as shopping centres go it at least has some character, but as you say the filth emporium is a blot on the landscape. I know it is petty, but I always walk past at the  opposite side of the pavement. The daft thing is the Sports direct shop behind it flogs as much of the tawdry filth clothing and gifts as their own shop.

They have many more fans than us, but a far smaller percentage who actually go to games, or even would if they could afford it. Sorry, too much writing and thinking about them, must go and disinfect the keyboard...

Haven't been there for a while so not seen the said emporium.  My wife though likes it for shopping (Kingston that is and not the filthy shop).  She's not mentioned their shop, knowing what my reaction would be!

On a (slightly) related matter if I'm in Smiths or similar and there are magazines of certain clubs does anyone else follow my suit and pick up one from eg Arsenal or Man U, pretend to be interested (as if!) and place it in front of said clubs equivalent?  I know it's petty but frankly it has to be done.

Good work, I have a slight variation, I put pornographic magazines in front of the filth publications, I see it as my civic duty.

yes is a bit petty, i don't much care, it would be a little bit pointless if we all supported the same club

Last Christmas in WH Smiths in Kingston I put the Fulham calendars in front of the filth and the W12 teams' versions, I like to think that I helped inspire some young kid to follow the true path instead of joining the rest of the blind sheep and socially inadequate people who need to attach themselves to success in the hope it reflects on them...

Fulham were looking to put a club shop in that very same row of shops, just before we got promoted to the Premiership, probably as the early management that transferred over from Harrdos had a retail background / focus, (although Neil Rodford came from publishing).

It shows how times have changed, as we are closing a shop in our own backyard.

Kingston..... eeeek. Too much traffic, too many people.  Can't deal with big crowds except at football because at least everyone is walking in the same direction.  I guess Kingston is fairly typical of over populated towns in the south east of England.

I do this with their kit in the sports shops - after which my wife normally storms out and we have an arguement about me being childish and petty.

As I live in Thames Ditton, Kingston is my local shopping mecca and as far as these things go it's not too bad - a market square, pedestrianised high street (I am old enough to remember when that wasn't the case), and in the Bentalls Centre it has a decent indoor centre. Oh, and my sister-in-law's restaurant is in Kingston too (Little Italy, by the telephone boxes tipping over statue).

The two blots are:

1. The Chelsea store.

2. Hollister. This is my daughter's spiritual home, and it seems like she has to pay homage there on a weekly basis with her mates. Any shop where you can't hear yourself think, or see the products that you are browsing, gets on my goat.

It also has The Fighting Cocks, where Fulham's finest punk band Emergency Bitter will be playing on 19th April.

And the Canbury Arms, which is a lovely little pub and does great good and ale, although it can be pricey. I had a lovely pint of Otter in there on Sunday.

My wife has been taking me (under protest)shopping at Kingston for years, we saw Steve Earl shopping there, with a very attractive lady, one day so it is not all bad.

That Chesea store, on a prime site right in the centre of the shopping area, is a real blot. If you are brave enough to take a closer look you will see that along with the terrible blue outfits they also sell black and white kits which is really irritating.

I was born and raised in Kingston and it breaks my heart having to see that "hole"
on the main street!! Does anyone remember the Sham 69 gig when Kingston was totally trashed?? About 77 I think!! Pity the shop wasn't there then, however probably would of been the only one left unscathed. LOL - Hollyfield boy.

When we have won the League and the Cup a dozen times and the Champions League a few time we may have a big shop in a prime shopping street.  Though the head of Tesco thinks high street shopping is dying so we may not have time.

We can dream but our wonderful little stadium will always prevent us becoming a big Club.

Cant stand either of these. Been in there a few times and you're right, you can't see a damn thing nor tell your missus you can't see anything due to the music pumping louder than you care to ever remember. They call it experimental retail/shopping, I call it testicles (in the English slang vernacular).
