Violence breaks out after Newcastle v Sunderland derby
ESPN staff
April 14, 2013« Murray 'better prepared' ahead of clay opener
Police and football supporters clashed in Newcastle city centre on Sunday in the aftermath of Sunderland's Tyne-Wear derby victory at St James' Park.

The Wearsiders claimed a 3-0 victory but there were violent scenes following the end of the match, with police having bricks, rocks and flash bangs thrown at them by angry fans.

Sunderland supporters were also attacked with missiles, and wheelie bins were set alight, as the travelling faithful's police escort to the train station was targeted.

A police officer at the scene told the Northern Echo that the scenes were "the worst rioting I have seen in the city centre for decades".

A shocked shopper added: "It was terrifying and complete chaos. The fans were chucking flares, bits of pavement, rocks, anything they could get their hands on."

What is going on? Is it just copycat violence you think?

Berserker

Didn't the Newcastle fans disrupt a amateur football recently when they were playing away somewhere?

What idiots, surely they know CCTV & the courts will catch up with these clowns.  No doubt the usual excuse will be rolled out about having drunk far too much before the game.  Shameful.

God The Mechanic

I like the dude who tried to fight the horse.  Real classy chap.

Its a worrying trend these days I'm afraid. I've seen more police and security at Paddington this season than for many years and unfortunately the rise of  Cardiff will lead to Police leave being cancelled next season. I went to Palace/Brighton as a guest and that has certainly moved on from aimless chanting. Hopefully sanity will remain in the environs of The Cottage.

Saw your comment on your Villa experience Mrs B. Was he an oik or just a drunk yob?

It seems to me the media appear to be playing down or giving quite low profile coverage of these events, which are getting more and more regular.
Not so many years ago, scenes like those at Wembley would have been front page news on ALL the Sunday papers, it made none I think.

epsomraver

And so it shouldn't, it's what these morons seek, their little moment of "fame"

Berserker

Oh a guy between 50 to 60 yrs old. The steward had directed me to the wrong ailse so i was trying to find my seat in row s but was actually looking at row t. The guy made a big deal of saying didn't i know S was before T, then he turned round to repeat this to the youngsters trying to show how stupid i was. I think he was trying to show off to them but they just ignored him. I felt like calling him a smart arse but didn't waste my breath. Maybe that's how the blue on blue fighting started Wembley, a guy trying to be a smart arse to a women with a big rucksack, ha

There was a good piece in one of the papers this morning saying that there was no trouble and little needle at the Newcastle-Sunderland match itself, the idiots who scrapped had been watching in the pubs.
You came all this way ... and you lost, and you lost.

Well speaking of disgusting fans, Millwall win it for me. I had a match at Uxbridge this weekend so had the pleasure of sitting on the Metropoliton line through Wembley. The utter drivvle and mindless drunken racism spilling from their mouths was atrocious. First time I've been ashamed to be involved in a sport because in some way shape or form I will be mentioned in the same sentence in comparsion to these shameful low lives. I want to say the chant they sang to a small family who had 2 small children sitting on their laps but I know the ruling on here and I don't want to offend. Shocking.

There were a bunch behind me and my kids in the neutral area at Wembley. They swore without realising as it was as much a part of their life as breathing.

There was also a pitch invasion by Portsmouth at their away match with Brentford.

I'm not trying to defend fan violence but I am irritated the way that when European clubs set their ground on fire with flares and smoke bombs it's called colour and when fans in the Uk do anything similar it's called hooliganism.

I've not forgotten Turin either. That was the only time I've felt ashamed of Fulham fans, well, a minority of supposed Fulham fans. And it wasn't just in the ground either. I had quite a lecture from some guy on the train who was on business in Turin that day and had noticed my shirt. I told him that a couple of thousand fans behaved perfect, it wasn't fair to tar us all because of 20-30 drunken idiots - but thats how it goes.

Still, nothing today compares to my visits to Burnley and Elland Road in the 80's. Always scary stuff for me those trips.

POMPEY'S prospective new owners have sent a warning out to fans who invaded the pitch at Brentford after the game on Saturday.

Around 100 supporters ran on to the pitch following Pompey's 3-2 defeat at Griffin Park. There were some scuffles with stewards and police who tried to control the situation.

It was the first game since last week's news at the High Court that the Trust will be gaining control of the club.

But now, there are fears that the club could face a fine for the pitch invasion – which will be paid by money invested by the fans themselves.

Ashley Brown, chairman of PST said: 'We understand it's been an emotional few days and the pitch invasion was largely a good-natured desire to show solidarity with the players after the events of last week.

'However, all fans need to understand that as a community club we have a shared responsibility to ensure we represent our club and the city of Portsmouth in the best possible way.

'We're aware there are some suggestions of provocation and are investigating these. Regardless, supporters should not come on to the pitch.' He added: 'As a club, we're likely to face a fine from the Football Association for what happened.

'That means money fans have invested will have to be diverted from other budgets to cover this unnecessary expenditure which would be far better spent on rebuilding the club.

'We have some fantastic fans and it has been their backing which has enabled us to complete our buy-out of Pompey. 'We will be working with supporter groups in the coming days to ensure there is no repeat of the scenes we saw at Brentford.'

The events came the same day as Millwall fans were seen fighting after the club was knocked out of the FA Cup by Wigan at Wembley stadium.

But SOS Pompey member Bob Beech said: 'It's important not to blow this out of proportion. It wasn't the same scenes we were seeing up the road at Wembley.

'But we need to learn from this and we need to move on.

'We want to discuss measures we can put in place for next season. We don't want to see this happen again at community Pompey. There's no place for this.

'It's a shame but hopefully we can move on.'

Pompey supporters also used Twitter to criticise the pitch invaders.

Ian Peach said: 'Frankly embarrassed at what I saw at end of the game. Sad to say I had moment when wondered if effort of last 18 months was worth it.'

A tweet from @pompeys12thman added: 'Not often I will tweet anything too controversial but those scenes at the end were hardly an advert for a community football club.'

No-one from the FA was available for comment.

Fortunately, although not good to see this sort of thing creeping back in, the stuff at Griffin Park was nothing to write home about. No handbags.

Forever Fulham

Hitting a horse...  Why would anyone try to injure a poor dumb animal?  Make them play their next game in an empty stadium.  The financial loss will force the club to take more meaningful measures to combat such depravity.

CanadianCottager

Someone needs to be put down, and I'm not talking about the horse.
