I'm a bit skeptical after what happened last summer. kept assuming that we had something up our sleeves but we waited too late. That experience turned me from being a positive happy go lucky person to a dull, bitter and twisted shell of myself!

You'll fit in well then!

What you have to realize is that we had plan a) before Khan took over. Jol was expected to work on a budget and I honestly believe that he'd have been going after players like Bardsley, Cattermole and Odemwingie to bulk out the squad, nothing more. Now that Khan has taken over, I would assume that we have plan b) but the only problem with this, is that it will set us back.

In a nutshell, everything would have been put on hold until Khan meets Jol. Even once that has happened, Jol needs to change his wish list and we need to start talking to different players, agents. Although this take over is a good thing, it's been bad with timing.

Yes it is frustrating watching other club strengthen around us, Sunderland being the club that are the most active. I have faith in the club and I'm sure we'll put it right before the window closes.

Khan refused to pay the bill for the tyres and all hell broke lose....

If they were Pirellis, I don't blame him.

Really?

Why and where does the squad need bulking out? Right back maybe? But elsewhere we have two players for every position except for the obvious needs.

What we need is not bulk but quality: quality in central midfield and quality in front of goal.

The above names look like the usual media wild speculation.

Jol said that the big signings almost inevitably come at the end of the transfer window. It's frustrating but that's the way it is for us middling clubs.

Putney

Even if it does set us back, we did the unthinkable and signed 3 players before the window opened so we're probably in a better position this year than previous seasons. I'm sure Jol gave Mackintosh a list of players he'd like from different price ranges so I wouldn't take the likes of Bardsley as the level of ability that we're only interested in.

Jol and Mackintosh will be aware that the goalposts might have moved and can be considering contingencies. Khan may already have spoken to Mac.  All will be clearer for them once Khan has met Jol, presumably in the next day or so.

Put your sweaty knickers away - Yes, I missed out the important part of inserting "quality" into my post. Although I do recon Jol was batting about for some cheap, better than average squad members to bulk things up a little and give us options. You're right, we do have 2 players to every position but if our first 11 fails, what do we have as back up, not a lot.

Also you've got to think about the English Quota we need to fill. With Baird and Davies both gone we're a bit thin on the ropes which (I think) would explain Bardsley and Cattermole links.

Goalkeepers: Stekelenburg, Stockdale, Etheridge
Right Backs: Reither, ?
Centre Backs: Hangeland, Amorebieta, Senderos, Hughes
Left Backs: Riise, Richardson, Briggs
Right Midfield: Dejagah, Duff
Centre Midfield: Boateng, Sidwell, Karagounis, ?
Left Midfield: Kacaniklic, Kasami, Frei
Forwards: Berbatiov, Ruiz, Rodallega, Trotta

Goalkeepers, central defence and left midfield seem very strong.

We need cover for right back.

We need a quality addition for midfield.

Left back still seems problematic. We have the numbers but might question the quality.

Similarly Berbatov is the only proven goalscorer so some additional quality would benefit us there.

I don't really believe any of the transfer speculation. Look at the general quality that Jol has brought in: Berbatov, Ruiz, Stekelenburg, Diarra, Karagounis, Reither, Amorebieta, Boateng. Even those who didn't or have yet to make a real impact, were loans or have moved on have been better quality than we have had in the past: Kasami, Richardson, Rodallega, Pogrebnyak, Petric, Enoh, Frimpong, Emanuelson. Jol's record gives me confidence that we will gradually be looking for and acquiring a better class of player.

Putney

We can bulk up on deadline day when other sides are desperate to offload unwanted players. Lets get quality in first.

They can sign me. I qualify and I'm very cheap: a season ticket and a roll-over hot dog and a pint of shandy every game.

By the way, what are the rules for the quota these days and for what competitions do they apply?

Was thinking about this the other day. We have Richardson, Briggs, Hughes, Stockdale, Sidwell.

You have got to have 8 in the selected 25 which are over 21 and Homegrown, by which they mean registered with a British club for 3 years before they turned 21 apparently.

cmg

We've got no real quota problems. From the existing squad Stockdale, Etheridge, Senderos, Briggs, Hughes, Sidwell, Richardson and Duff are all 'home grown' and all these will presumably make the final 25.

I'm not sure if it is possible, should it become neccessary, to 'waste' a home grown (as nearly all of them are) under 21. Perhaps someone could confirm.

With the current squad, we could have 19 registered players with the 8 homegrown within that. However, if Etheridge goes out on loan then we need to register Trotta to make up the 8. Players under the age of 21 don't need to be registered.

Bardsley clear for Cottage move

Fulham are set to push through a deal to sign Sunderland full-back Phil Bardsley after they moved in for Argentine Gino Peruzzi.
Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio has identified the 21-year-old Velez Sarsfield right-back, Peruzzi, as the man to be his first-choice in the back-line at the Stadium of Light in the new Premier League season.

And, as the player is now on Wearside after flying over from Buenos Aires on Wednesday to undergo a medical and agree personal terms, confirmation of his signing is expected to be made soon.

That will leave 28-year-old Scotland international Bardsley free to make a move, which is set to alert Fulham boss Martin Jol who was linked with a swoop earlier this month.

The player's time at Sunderland was virtually over at the back end of last season when he was publicly criticised by Di Canio after being photographed in a casino late at night as the club battled to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

As a result Bardsley did not travel with the team for their pre-season training camp in Italy, while he is not in the squad for the Hong Kong trip this weekend.

He has kept his fitness levels up at the Sunderland training ground and played for the Under-21 development side in a goalless pre-season friendly against Southampton at the Academy of Light on Wednesday.
