If we sell Ryan Sessegnon, it seems the only attacking left back we have if Joe Bryan. In the Premier League, MLM, Ream and S.Sess are all decent cover defensively against strong teams when we play a back four; but only Bryan can play in a back five or back four attacking down the wings. In addition, Bryan is useful as a backup left midfielder, left winger or defensive midfielder if he has a good backup (ideally a left back that can backup right back too).

Plus any further loans or buys need to be homegrown, as seven of the matchday 18 needs to be homegrown. There is a case for swapping Fabri and Cisse for homegrown players on deadline day, although a rate both players as good value, hopefully buyers do to.

Current homegrown list is Bettinelli, Rodak, Bryan, Christie, Cairney, Fonte and Mawson. Looking a bit tight there. You need at least 7. We've got 7.

De la Torre may be eligible now as he's 21.

I thought the rule was a "homegrown" player had to have been affiliated with English clubs for 3 yrs before turning 21. So they don't have to be 21, do they? In that case the Sessegnons, DLT, O'Riley et al would all be HG.

U21 aren't classed in the official 25 man squad I believe. Hence you can have a max 25 over 21 players, but unlimited U21.

What's Gary Cahill doing at the moment - maybe we could get him on a short contract. As for left back, Marlon Fossey looks good to me. He's worth a punt for backup to JB

That is correct, but we need seven homegrown players named in every matchday 18. So, if Betts, Mawson and Bryan are injured, then to get seven players in the matchday 18, we would have to name Rodak, S.Sess, Christie, Cairney, DLT, O'Riley and Fonte, which would be quite limiting as most of the bench would be homegrown players.

They are the Premier League rules. The Championship Rules are different, they have changed since last time we were in the league and i don't entirely understand them yet. But, we need to name seven players in the matchday 18, so assuming we play three subs at least three homegrown players must enter the field of play each game. Players Under 21 can be classified as homegrown in the championship, we will need some homegrown players on the bench.

Owen Hargreaves and Eric Dyer are not homegrown.

Here's the text of the rule as it appears in the regulations currently on the EFL site

33.8 Home Grown Players.

Each Club shall be required to nominate a minimum of seven Home Grown Players on their Team Sheet of Players for all League Competition Matches (including Play Off Matches).

Guidance

Home Grown – Carabao Cup, EFL Trophy and FA Cup matches are exempt from the Home Grown quota.

33.9 'Home Grown Player' shall mean a Player who irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with:-

33.9.1 his current Club; and/or

33.9.2 a Club and/or any other football club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales,

for a period, continuous or not of three Seasons or 36 months prior to his 21 birthday (or the end of the Season during which he turns 21).  For the purposes of this definition of Home Grown Player only, a Season will be deemed to commence for all Clubs on the same date as the date on which the Summer Transfer Window in that Season closes for Clubs in Leagues One and Two, and expire on the date of the final League Match of the Season.
