Neil Etheridge: Goalkeeper's Cardiff City future uncertain after omission

Neil Etheridge has also played for Fulham, Oldham Athletic, Charlton Athletic and Walsall

Neil Etheridge's future at Cardiff City looks increasingly uncertain after the goalkeeper was dropped for Sunday's south Wales derby with Swansea City.

Alex Smithies started ahead of the 29-year-old in the 0-0 draw.

Etheridge has been linked with West Ham, while fellow Premier League side Aston Villa showed interest in 2019.

"There's been a lot of talk around Neil, not just in this window, but in the previous window as well," said Cardiff boss Neil Harris.

"I had a really good couple of conversations with Neil in the week about his standards and what he wants to get back to.

"Without speaking out of turn, I think it's been a little bit up and down.

"The lad wants to be consistent, he wants to be settled and play football. To do that sometimes, especially in these games, you need to be at your best. You need to be focused.

"I made the decision to leave him out. He understood. He wanted to play obviously, but Alex has wanted to play every game since I've been here, and Joe Day wants to play as well.

"We've got three goalkeepers who all deserve to play first-team football and three don't go into one, so something will have to give before 1 February."

West Ham's Fabianski injured

West Ham are in the market for a goalkeeper after first-choice Lukasz Fabianski, formerly of Swansea, suffered another injury during Friday's defeat at Sheffield United.

The Hammers had hoped to re-sign Darren Randolph from Middlesbrough, but that has been held up because of the Republic of Ireland international's own fitness concerns.

Cardiff's signing of Joe Day from Newport County last summer took the total of senior goalkeepers in their squad to four, before veteran Brian Murphy left the club earlier this month.

Etheridge, who joined from Walsall for free in 2017, was one of Cardiff's best performers in the Premier League last season.

The Philippines international saved three penalties - a joint-high for the top flight - and kept 10 clean sheets for despite the Bluebirds' relegation.

However, this season, Etheridge has struggled to recapture that form in the Championship.

Smithies 'best' derby option

Smithies has taken his place and, having deputised for Etheridge when he was injured earlier this season, Harris is confident the 2018 £4m signing from QPR can fill the role permanently.

"Alex Smithies is a quality goalkeeper who's proved himself year after year playing in the Championship," he said.

"Alex wants to play. He's outstanding in training every day, he's a super professional and a goalkeeper I rate highly.

"Today with everything, the decision was made and Alex was the best option today.

"Moving forward, they're good goalkeepers, really good goalkeepers. It's a wonderful position for me to be in."

'This would be quite a surprising move' – Fulham prepare move for 25-year-old: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World's 'The Verdict' series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...

Fulham manager Scott Parker is looking to strengthen his squad, with the Cottagers preparing a move for Huddersfield defender Terence Kongolo, who has fallen out of favour with Terriers boss Danny Cowley, according to a report on Football Insider.

Cowley has confirmed that the Dutch defender is available for transfer, after confirming that he is not part of his plans, opening the door to Fulham who are looking to strengthen their defensive options, with a tough second half of the season ahead of them.

So would the 25-year-old be a good addition at Craven Cottage and is he actually needed?

We discuss...........

Kris Smith

"In terms of quality, this could be a strong signing for Fulham as he would suit exactly how Scott Parker is looking to operate this season, however, the fee might be excessive.

"Huddersfield might not be in a position to let key players of high values go to teams in this division, especially in the January window where it is extremely hard to replace players.

"Fulham are in a position where they could mount a serious push for automatic promotion if they strengthen in key areas, and one of those is in defence where they have been too leaky.

"If Kongolo doesn't command a huge fee, it could be a very smart move from Fulham to bring him in, and add depth to a defence that needs tightening up, having conceded the joint-most goals in the top six with 30 so far."

Luke Phelps

"Kongolo has had a nightmare season for Huddersfield. He's missed huge parts of the campaign through injury and finds himself struggling to even make the match day squads – the last time he played was against Bristol City in November, scoring an own-goal that game.

"He's obviously a quality centre-back though having played for some big European teams in Feyenoord and Monaco, and he was a regular feature for the Terriers in the Premier League last season. He could definitely do a good job for another Championship club, but would he get in the Fulham side?

"Scott Parker's side have recently welcomed Michael Hector. The Jamaican finalised his move from Chelsea and looks to be the no.1 defender for the Cottagers now. But Fulham fans aren't fully sold on the likes of Alfie Mawson and Tim Ream, and another addition in that area would make for good competition.

"I think this would be a good signing providing that Fulham can get a good price. Konogolo is still only 25-years-old and remains a player of good quality despite a nightmarish season with Huddersfield – Fulham should move for the Dutchman this month."

Ben Lang

"This would be quite a surprising move given the fact Kongolo has recently not been deemed good enough to start regularly for Huddersfield, but he could perhaps provide Fulham with some defensive depth in the second half of the season.

"Kongolo will surely be pushing for a move after falling out of favour at the John Smith's Stadium, and it cannot bode well for his attitude that Terriers fans have been criticising his desire since the club was relegated from the top-flight.

"However, the defender may indeed benefit from a fresh start under a new manager who actually wants him at the club, and Fulham could well provide this opening given they are in need of further defensive cover.

"The London side have already completed their move to sign Chelsea defender Michael Hector this window, but further additions would probably be welcomed as the Cottagers target promotion, and Kongolo would also welcome the opportunity to push for a possible top-flight return."

Darren Randolph available for Middlesbrough & will travel to London as West Ham medical wait goes on

West Ham United are still deliberating over medical results as Randolph waits for the green light

Darren Randolph will be part of the Middlesbrough squad travelling to London today ahead of games in the capital against Tottenham and Fulham this week.

Whether the goalkeeper is still a Boro player at the end of the week remains to be seen, with Randolph's move to his former club West Ham United still hanging in the balance.

The Hammers have reservations over Randolph's thigh injury that has kept him out of action since the end of November.

But the Ireland international insists he's fully fit, and, as far as Boro are concerned, he's now fit and available to play against Spurs and Fulham after recovering from the injury.

That said, he's still not expected to feature in either game. Jonathan Woodgate has confirmed Tomas Mejias will start at Tottenham on Tuesday night and Aynsley Pears is likely to have the gloves at Craven Cottage.

Randolph was in London for talks with West Ham last week after a fee believed to be in the region of £4m was agreed between the clubs. The keeper had an initial medical but the Hammers then wanted to do further tests on Randolph to make sure he'd recovered from the thigh injury that's bothered him this season.

The Premier League club need to sign a new keeper sooner rather than later after Łukasz Fabiański suffered a recurrence of a hip injury against Sheffield United on Friday night and was replaced in the first half.

Randolph was back on Teesside at the start of this week, though, and will travel with the squad to London on Monday afternoon.

In his press conference on Monday morning, Woodgate said: "The situation is with Darren is it's the longest medical I've ever known in history and I've had a few medicals myself and, believe it or not, I've passed a few.

"But this is unbelievable really, let's see what happens over the next 48 hours."

Randolph wants the move to West Ham but Woodgate insists there won't be any problems with the keeper if the switch doesn't go through.

He said: "Darren's a professional. Look what he's done for the football club, he's been an outstanding keeper for us so he'll be professional. He'll be fine."

Woodgate was asked whether he thinks it's a good move for Randolph to go back to the Hammers, with Fabianski expected to be first choice when he's fit.

The manager said: "Is he going to be a No2? Fabianski's injured so he's going for No1, isn't he?

"Listen I love Darren Randolph he's a top keeper, he hasn't gone yet so let's see."

Club have sent two formal offers to Fulham – Both of which rejected

Jean-Michaël Seri's future has been very much a topic of discussion in the winter market so far.

There's been various claims coming from Turkey some stating Galatasaray, who have the midfielder on loan for the season from Fulham, would be willing to send him back, with others stating they'd quite like to keep him for the rest of the campaign.

Links have been made to various clubs, including some in the Premier League, and there's also been rumours coming from France.

FootMercato report Lyon have made two formal offers for Seri. The first one was worth €11m, and the second came in a little higher at €12m. Both those approaches are said to have been rejected by Fulham.

The Championship side are to be looking for €18m, which is said to be the clause Gala hold to make the move permanent. Should Lyon and Fulham reach a deal, and presumably Gala fail to match it, then the loan will be cut short.

Ream: Digging In

Tim Ream was satisfied with the way Fulham ground out the three points in Hull on Saturday.

It was a 90 minutes low on excitement, but the travelling contingent didn't care one bit thanks to Ivan Cavaleiro's stunning winner.

"That's the way the Championship is," Ream told fulhamfc.com. "We did some decent things in the first half; decent build up, scored a great goal from Cav. Second half we knew what they'd be about.

"They've got a big striker up top and they laid their cards out in the first half with the way they were playing up to him pretty quick, so it was just about digging in in the second half and making sure we kept the clean sheet."

In the reverse fixture, the Tigers wreaked havoc with their counter attacking style of play, something they had no joy with at the weekend.

"We worked on it every day," Ream explained, "taking little fouls and just making sure our full-backs were locked into their wingers.

"We worked on it all week with everybody, just making sure the full-backs did their job, that Kev [McDonald] stayed very central, making sure we had a solid five behind the ball, and making sure that any ball that did pop out didn't go anywhere we didn't want it to."

A home defeat for Leeds United means we now sit just seven points off second place, but Ream knows concentrating on our own form is the most important thing.

"I think you always have one eye on it, but for us we just want to keep building our own momentum," he said. "Obviously they're ahead of us and we can't affect what they do.

"We have to worry about ourselves and worry about our own matches, but there's always one eye on the teams above you and where you can possibly get to.

"If we can keep getting wins and put a run together there's no reason why we can't catch them and surpass them."

Ivan Cavaleiro sends personal message to Fulham fans after Hull win

Ivan Cavaleiro scored the only goal as Fulham beat Hull City in the Championship on Saturday.

A first league win of 2020 for Fulham, and a goal for Cavaleiro to celebrate his permanent move to Fulham – the Portuguese winger joined the Cottagers on loan from Wolves in the summer, but the club made his stay permanent last week.

He struck just before the hour-mark at the KCOM Stadium and it was enough for Scott Parker's side to take all three points, placing them 4th in the Championship table.

Fulham have now won four of their last six in all competitions after losing three on the bounce through December, and dropping out of the top-six.

Here's what the 26-year-old posted on his Instagram yesterday:

It's his sixth goal in the Championship this season – he scored in the New Year's Day loss at home to Reading, ending a run of 14 games without a goal.

Plenty of Fulham fans are happy to see him stay and even more Wolves fans are sad to see him go. Parker made a lot of loan signings in the summer, like Harry Arter, Bobby Reid and Anthony Knockaert and supporters have been keen to sign one or two on a permanent basis.

Fulham next host Middlesbrough at the weekend – Jonathan Woodgate's side have lost just one of their last nine in all competitions, and have pulled themselves up to 16th after their dismal start to the season.

Talking Points: Hull City

Five things we've been discussing in the office after Fulham's 1-0 victory at Hull City...

1. First win at the KCOM

Hull City away hasn't been a prosperous ground for Fulham since the Tigers moved there in 2002/03. Our first four trips all ended in defeat – including one which we have all tried to eradicate from our memories – before we secured a first ever point in December 2017. And so it was pleasing to get that particular monkey off our back on Saturday, with three points in our pocket as we made the long journey home.

2. Good week for Cav

It was an excellent seven days for Ivan Cavaleiro. After making his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers permanent on Tuesday, he then went and hit a fabulous winner at the weekend, before claiming the Club's Man of the Match award on the Monday.

3. Anxious wait on Mitro

The only blemish from Saturday's win was seeing Aleksandar Mitrović stretchered off after picking up an ankle injury. "It doesn't look great," Scott Parker said. "He's injured himself pretty badly. It looks like he's twisted his ankle and he's struggling at the moment." All fingers will be crossed as we wait to find out the extent of the damage.

4. Take advantage

Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion are on runs of one win in six and one win in seven, respectively. If Fulham are to gatecrash the automatic spots, we need to be taking advantage of such blips, just like we did at the weekend.

5. Home fans' malaise

When Hull had the ball in the net at the end of stoppage time, their fans closest to the away end were so keen to celebrate to the travelling faithful that they neglected to spot the lineman's raised flag. It led to an unusual situation of both sets of fans celebrating relentlessly, until gradually the Tigers supporters became aware that their one point was actually none.

Report: Fulham reject two offers from Lyon for Jean-Michael Seri

The Ivorian only joined the Cottagers at the start of last season.

According to a report from Foot Mercato, Championship side Fulham have rejected two offers from French giants Lyon for Jean Michael Seri.

The Ivorian, who joined from Ligue 1 side Nice 18 months ago is currently on loan in Turkey at Galatasaray who, according to the report, would prefer to keep hold of him until the end of the season.

The report claims that Lyon have made two bids of £9.4 million and £10.3 million respectively for Seri but both have been sent back by the Lilywhites.

Fulham are looking for at least £15.4 million, which is what Galatasaray will have to pay at the end of their season to exercise their 'option to buy' clause.

Seri played 32 times for Fulham in the Premier League last season but his performances weren't enough to keep them up. This season, he has played 18 times for Galatasaray in all competitions and has been fairly decent for the Turkish giants.

A move back to France could be tempting for Seri who spent three years there with Nice. Lyon are struggling the Ligue 1 this season and are currently seventh at the moment.

Rudi Garcia's side are badly hurt with injuries and are in desperate need of reinforcements this month.

Seri, a proven commodity in France, would be a very good signing for them and a move certainly makes sense for all parties involved. Seri has no future with Fulham unless they make it back into the Premier League.

Scott Parker's side are currently fourth in the Championship and are unlikely to attain automatic promotion unless Leeds United and West Brom collapse.

The play-off is their most realistic option to return to the top-flight but it won't be easy there either considering that the teams around them have looked really strong this term.

Significant transfer update emerges about 28-y/o Fulham man

It has been revealed that Fulham have rejected two bids from Lyon for their 28-year-old central midfielder Jean Michael Seri, according to reports in FootMercato.

Reports suggest that Lyon have submitted two formal offers for the 28-year-old, with the first coming in at €11 million, and the second an improved €12 million.

It is thought that Fulham have rejected both bids from the Ligue 1 club, as the offers do not meet the club's valuation of the Ivory Coast international.

The Ivorian is currently on a season-long loan from Fulham at Turkish SuperLig side Galatasaray.

It is believed that the Cottagers want a sum of €18 million for Seri for a deal to be considered – as it is the clause in Galatasaray's contract that makes the deal permanent.

On the contrary, Eurosport and Get French Football News have reported that Fulham will not consider any bids for Seri unless Galatasaray cancel the loan arrangement between the two clubs.

Seri has made a total of eighteen appearances for Galatasaray so far this season, scoring one goal.

The 28-year-old remains one of Fulham's most expensive signings at the club. The Ivorian signed for the Cottagers in the summer of 2018 from OGC Nice for a fee of £20 million+.

The Verdict

Although it is a significant development concerning Jean Michael Seri, the offers from Lyon will likely not lead to anything happening, with Galatasaray's loan deal the stumbling block for the French club.

Even so, €12 million represents a massive loss for Fulham, and on that basis, the club would've likely rejected the same bid even if Seri was not at the Turkish club.

Leeds United: Fans fume after FA revelation about loss to Fulham

Leeds United fans have been left fuming after the FA revealed some news regarding the club's 2-1 defeat to Fulham earlier on this season. The club's chief executive, Angus Kinnear praised the FA after they made it clear that the linesman was wrong to award the West London side a penalty in the Yorkshire outfit's 2-1 defeat last month (via Leeds Live).

However, that will prove little consolation to Marcelo Bielsa's side as the result in the capital was the beginning of a poor run of form. The Championship side had gone 11 games without defeat, however, the Whites have now won just of their last six games following the game (via WhoScored).

Fans were left feeling angry after it was made clear the club were on the wrong end of a refereeing decision as they took to Twitter to react. With that in mind, here is a selection of tweets from the Elland Road faithful following the news:

West Brom, Fulham and Forest target Gayle available on free loan – obligation to buy is massive

According to John Percy of The Telegraph, and picked up by Joe Brophy from The Sun, Newcastle United are ready to offer striker Dwight Gayle to interested Sky Bet Championship clubs but with two caveats, big caveats at that too.

There is little doubt that Dwight gayle is a striker who can do the business at Championship level, he's already proved that point. In fact, when it comes to scoring goals at this level the 29-year-old frontman has nothing to prove.

He's featured in exactly 100 games in English football's second-tier competition and has a healthy return of 59 goals and 16 assists to his name. That level of production is bound to raise interest in him, sides battling over him as they look for those goals that can shoot them out of a Championship that is rapidly becoming one of the most competitive leagues in football.

Despite only featuring in nine Premier League games for the Magpies this season, suitors for his services have been told by Toon boss Steve Bruce that the much-admired striker was staying put at St James Park. However, the Telegraph's Percy says that all this has changed and that "Newcastle are prepared to sanction a loan deal" to any interested club.

Yet, with many fans wanting the goal threat that Gayle blows in with, there needs to be urged a sense of caution and the staying of enthusiasm. The reason for this is a pair of big caveats for any side wanting to bring him on board: Newcastle "will insist" that any loaning club pay his £60,000 wages in full and agree to a £20million obligation to buy dependent upon promotion.

Newcastle would allow clubs to spread that £20million payment over two instalments but the fact that it is such a high figure might deter sides from taking the plunge. Saying that the riches off the back of promotion to the Premier League make Newcastle's asking price look like a drop in the ocean – albeit quite a hefty drop.

I don't recall the FA commenting about officials decisions after the event as if they did there are dozens every week they can so why pick this one. Don't recall them mentioning the blatant penalty we were not given agains Bristol City.
