I watched the 2nd Fishermans Friends, not as good as the first
but good Cornish humour.
I half expected a guest performance of "Doc Martin" as the cameras
followed a couple up the hill, and the group of girls saying "tosser"
as they passed the grumpy one.
VERY DAFT AND A LOT DAFTER THAN I SEEM, SOMETIMES

It would be nice if this rolls on, it's good getting people's opinions.

For anyone who doesn't know, the Movie database 'IMDB' has reviews, critics (Critiques  :0)
comments, cast etc on just about any Movie, TV series, Documentaries etc that was ever made
+ reviews on new and coming movies.
and it's free.

An old production of Oliver Twist was on TV over Christmas with Alec Guiness as Fagin and Robert Newton as Bill Sykes.
Hard to top that for two great acting performances in one film.

The Searchers. I watched it on the back of it being the greatest Western ever made, but it isn't. It's not even close.

Hard to say its the best ever but IMO and many others, it's a great film.
You have to put aside the historical inaccuracies and see the obsession, suffering and finally redemption.
A true classic of the Western genre with the powerful themes of racism, individuality and the contrast between the "American" character and the untamed frontier.
You also have to watch it through the eyes of times it was made and not the more realistic westerns of recent times.

It is a long time since I saw it, but I remember having mixed views. It was pioneering in terms of the dark tone, which characterises the first part, and is there throughout if occasionally too much in the background, but as i recall, there are too many would be "comic" moments, which to modern viewers are simply unfunny.  A very good film for its time, but I agree that it is nowhere near being the greatest Western ever.

On the theme of Westerns, although it is a six part series rather than a film, I watched The English, a BBC and Amazon Prime produced six part Western starring Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer. A bit disappointed by this, given the stellar reviews. There was much to admire visually, and both Blunt and Spencer have great screen presence. .However, it was ponderous and meandered, and was too self-consciously stylish and enigmatic. The story was weak, with a particularly unexciting ending.

I watched Top Gun Maverick recently. An absurd load of old tosh, despite all the hype surrounding it.

FFC1987

Been going through all the mafia movies. But last one I watched was Casino having watched Goodfellas, Godfather, The Departed and The Irishmen.

Great films.

The Rules of the Game, was playing on the big screen in SF last night. It's probably my all time favorite.

On the subject of Westerns, I recently found Sergio Leones "A Fistful Of Dynamite" on YouTube (on my big TV) and thought it was absolutely fantastic, I thought it was much better than Once Upon A Time in The West which is often cited as Leone's great western.

Really not what I was expecting at all and is one of those movies that I found myself thinking about for weeks after, and some great cinematography and Morricone Music.

It also goes by the odd title "Duck You  Sucka"...(true)...

I really recommend watching it without any spoilers at all, and with headphones on.

Over Xmas watched Planes Trains And Automobiles, yet again...one of the great movie endings.

Top Gun Maverick was great fun,. The second half basically being the  Star Wars Trench Run in planes....but yes a good old fashioned action movie brought up to date.

And in the cinema, Banshees of Inisherin...which I was not that impressed by. I loved in Bruges and 3 Billboards, so was really looking forward to it, and it had some great acting and visuals, and basic premise...but I found the script so clunky, and a fair bit of a slog...I am surprised at the great reviews it is getting. I gave it another watch as it is on Disney+ now, but nah, not for me.
