Chant for Southampton

Rather than the unsympathetic, "Going down, going down, going down," how about showing a touch of humour by chanting "We're staying up, we're staying up, you're not, you're not." Not exactly gloating, just stating facts.

Okay, that is just not going to happen, is it?
Any fool can criticise, condemn and complain, and most fools do.

Cambridge Away

I second that, but a more modern "We're staying up.." to the tune of "We're f**king s**t.." most famously sang by QPR on many an occasion.

SG

I remember how I felt at Swansea all those years ago. Swansea supporters were with us singing always look on the bright side of life. Southampton always seem a decent club to me so I wouldn't gloat or 'state facts' but wish them luck and a swift return. It could be us next year after all as nobody would have foreseen Southampton or Leicester struggling

Beware the doomed team playing like world beaters as a last hurrah. We have done that ourselves on our numerous relegations.

I remember that day well. Always had a soft spot for Swansea after that, they were very sympathetic.

That match at Swansea started off with their fans taking the p1ss out of us and then in the end they were supportive as they knew what relegation was like and had no reason to dislike us other than being English!
Completely agree with your view as regards Saints. Our view of not gloating at another club's misfortune is probably that we've been through it all with FFC.

I wouldn't gloat relegation hurts

Quite agree not to be too overt. Instead, what about "are you Pompey in disguise?"
Non sumus statione ferriviaria

Bright side of life is a good shout. Can't imagine we'll get 3k to whistle though  ::ahah::
Stand up if you still believe!

Either "Pack.Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile"

Or for the more pessimistic...

"We'll Meet again, don't know where, don't know when"

On the coach back from Swansea someone put "Things can only get better" on the radio. Clearly they did but maybe even better then we could have hoped back then.

Cambridge Away

I think Rupert was alluding to being kinder in his original post.
Yes, the first time i ever felt ashamed as a Fulham supporter was after we beat Norwich 5-0 and relegated them in style and i remember seeing some little oik Fulham supporters (who could only have seen better days) giving abuse to the Norwich fans on coaches. Total lack of style.
Unfortunately though there will be some stick tho at the game.
It's for the good fans not to join.

On this note, please can someone explain why Jay Stansfield (who seems a lovely lad) was goading the Morecambe fans when he scored each of his goals (for his Hatrick) to single handedly relegate them? Is he getting chants about his father or something?

Yes, I had that in mind, shows some compassion.
If however we want to be cruel "When the saints go tumbling down"

Woolly Mammoth

Gloating is for Gloats and completely classless, juvenile, unoriginal, gormless and for simpletons.
People in glass houses should not throw hand grenades.
So how about showing respect and sympathise with their plight, by singing as has been suggested "always look on the bright side of life" or something similar.

No need to kick a team like Southampton when they are down and almost out.
I do not understand the mentality of gloating.
By leaving their fans with positive thoughts and memories about how Fulham treated them in their death throes may very well come back to help us in our hour of need.
In my mind only delinquents gloat.
Its not the man in the fight, it's the fight in the man.  🐘

Never forget your Roots.

Yes, that is how i remember it. They took the piss but were confronted by not one reaction. So, all they saw were a load of broken people and actually pitied us... then felt the need to be our friend rather than our tormentor.
Am i right in thinking they went on the pitch too (for no massive reason) or am i getting them confused with Reading after losing to them in the play offs? I know that's a huge time gap!

RaySmith

I remember Stoke fans standing up and clapping us, after they'd sealed our relegation doom by giving us a good hiding.
Our support was amazing that day, standing and singing to the bitter end.

Remember another relegation, from D2, standing on the Hammersmith terracing singing 'loyal supporters' during the last game of the season, after having  gone down 1-4 at Watford the previous week, a game we needed to win to stay up.

_Putney_

"It was a great season,
but you're awful and going down,
because your players arent good enough,
your manager is no good,
even your new one,
I don't like Southampton as a town much,
even though I've not spent much time there,
Well, me personally, don't know about the other Fulham fans,"

to the tune of Happy Birthday

I had almost forgotten singing always look on the bright side of life, having tried to forget that weekend ever happened, hearing the false stories of results going our way and raising our hopes only to find out we were going down was a real kick in the teeth, at full time I was close to tears at the thought of playing in the bottom division, the next time this happened was in Hamburg after losing the final but the tears I was holding back were tears of pride). To make matters worse we were staying in Swansea that night, we stayed at a student friends digs it made the house in the Young Ones look like Buckingham Palace. The pubs and clubs were full of happy Swansea fans which didn't brighten my mood, in fairness those that spotted we were Fulham fans didn't rub it in.

Congratulations Sir Woolly, over 30,000 posts that is some milestone and should gain our complete respect, chanting should be as you say against Southampton.
By the way talking of the moderates in glass houses who throw stones did you hear about the Zulu chief who was hit on his head by his chair falling from the ceiling. The moral is that people who live in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones.
