Ipswich Town 1-3 Fulham

Harry Wilson's goal for Fulham was his first club goal since scoring in a 2-1 Premier League win against Leeds on 22 April
Fulham moved into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2004-05 with a convincing win at Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town.

Harry Wilson put Fulham ahead in the ninth minute when he collected Bobby de Cordova-Reid's pass and took it around advancing goalkeeper Christian Walton.

The visitors hit the woodwork twice before they made it 2-0 as Wilson's low cross was finished by Rodrigo Muniz.

Tom Cairney added a third, but Elkan Baggott headed in a late consolation.

Fulham have an away tie again in the last eight as they take on fellow Premier League side Everton, in a match that will be played in the week commencing 18 December, 2023.

Fulham too good for hosts
Ipswich, second in the Championship, changed their entire starting 11 from the side that beat Plymouth 3-2, while Fulham made eight changes from the team that began the 1-1 draw with Brighton at the weekend.

Walton was making his first appearance of the season following a foot injury but dashed out of his penalty area and saw Wilson take the ball around him before slotting into an unguarded net to give the visitors an early lead.

Marco Silva's team, 14th in the Premier League, were the better side throughout and Fode Ballo-Toure's deflected cross hit the crossbar before Walton got lucky when he fumbled Calvin Bassey's shot, but the ball bounced off the post.

Town had won their last six home matches but fell further behind early in the second half, with Wilson's deflected cross converted by Muniz at the back post.

Ipswich had fought back from two goals down to beat Wolves 3-2 in the third round but could not do the same again at Portman Road.

Cairney stretched Fulham's advantage with a low strike from the edge of the penalty area with De Cordova-Reid getting his second assist of the evening.

The Suffolk side had scored in 31 games in a row and they extended that streak when substitute Baggott headed in from Jack Taylor's corner from the left, but that did not prove the spark for a fightback as Fulham eased through.

The Cottagers also reached the last eight of the competition in 1967-68, 1970-71, 1999-00, 2000-01 and 2004-05 but lost at that stage on every occasion and have never made the semi-finals.

Ipswich 1-3 Fulham

Fulham booked their place in the Quarter-Finals of the Carabao Cup with a comfortable win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday evening.

A goal early in the first half from Harry Wilson was supplemented by a goal early in the second from Rodrigo Muniz and a third from Tom Cairney, before Elkan Baggott got the hosts a goal back.

There were eight changes deployed in the midst of a busy week for Fulham. Most notably Luc De Fougerolles made his first competitive start, whilst in other news Muniz led the line, Marek Rodák and Fodé Ballo-Touré got some more Cup action, and Cairney was back in to captain the side.

The Whites started on the front foot and snuck in behind enemy lines down the right early on when Calvin Bassey's beautiful ball over the top was perfectly cushioned down on the run by Wilson. His cross had to be put out for a corner, but nothing came from it in the end.

The early good work paid off and Fulham were ahead after eight minutes. Great work from Muniz in the build-up dragged some defenders out, before Bobby De Cordova-Reid put that to use to switch it to Wilson, who was on his own. With only the goalkeeper to beat, our Welsh winger kept his cool to round Christian Walton and score into a vacant net.

Marco Silva's men could smell blood and pushed for a quickfire second. Ballo-Touré's strong running down the left allowed him to get a cross in which was deflected onto the crossbar and eventually cleared.

Ipswich were bound to threaten and did soon after when Kayden Jackson collected a loose ball and got a shot off, but Rodák was equal to it with a smart reflex save.

Andreas Pereira came close half-an-hour in after some nice link-up between Cairney and De Cordova-Reid. Our Brazilian midfielder picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and attempted the spectacular, and his left-footed shot glided narrowly past the post.

Before the first half was up there was another big Fulham chance, this time courtesy of Calvin Bassey. His sliced shot from the edge of the box hit the 'keeper before dramatically bouncing back off the inside of the post and out.

Fulham started the second like they did the first... with a goal. Wilson drove forwards with aggression before playing it to Pereira on the right, whose low driven cross put it on a plate for his good friend Muniz to poke home.

Wilson had been causing havoc all game and did again next with yet another aggressive run up field. This time he was tackled in the box, but the ball fell kindly to De Cordova-Reid, who saw his ping at goal blocked.

With just over 20 minutes to play Silva gave things a shake up, bringing on Harrison Reed, Alex Iwobi and Raúl Jiménez to replace the potent trio of Pereira, Wilson and Muniz.

One of those subs made an almost-instant impact to help Fulham to their third goal of the evening, in the shape of Raúl. His hold-up play allowed De Cordova-Reid a free passage to charge down the right before squaring it to Cairney, who drove his shot past Walton.

Moments later and there was a goal at the other end this time, as substitute Baggott nodded home a corner to deny Fulham a clean sheet.

De Cordova-Reid was another player in white to be causing problems for the opposition all game, and went close to getting a warrented goal when he volleyed Iwobi's layoff goalwards, requiring a solid save to keep him out.

Omari Hutchinson had a decent opportunity to make things slightly more uncomfortable for Fulham when he blasted a shot in the box over the bar with normal time almost up.

In the end Fulham held out professionaly and calmly to secure their place in the next round of the competition.

Ipswich: Walton, Donacien (Hutchinson 69'), Tuanzebe, Burgess (Baggott 60'), Clarke, Ball, Taylor, Jackson, Aluko (Humphreys 61'), Harness, Ladapo (Hirst 69')

Subs: Edmundson, Chaplin, Slicker, Hutchinson, Luongo, Baggott, Hirst, Humphreys, Carr

Fulham FC: Rodák, Castagne (Tanton 95'), De Fougerolles, Bassey, Ballo-Touré, Lukić, Cairney, Wilson (Iwobi 69'), Andreas Pereira (Reed 68'), De Cordova-Reid, Rodrigo Muniz (Jiménez 69')

Subs: Reed, Jiménez, Ream, Iwobi, Benda, João Palhinha, Carlos Vinícius, Robinson, Tanton

Companies House updates reveal £31m Leicester City transfer decision
The deals for Harvey Barnes and Timothy Castagne saw payments set out in instalments, but City have opted to bring in the cash now as part of a loan from Macquarie

Leicester City have bolstered their finances by bringing in £31.3m owed to them through the sales of Harvey Barnes and Timothy Castagne.

The pair were sold to Newcastle and Fulham this summer with the deals including staggered payments. Rather than wait for the fees to be paid over the next two summers, City have opted to take the money up front from Macquarie, with the two Premier League sides to pay their fees to the Australian bank in August 2024 and August 2025.

This has become a standard practice for City. They took the same path for Riyad Mahrez and Wesley Fofana's transfers in summers gone by, and did the same for James Maddison's move to Tottenham earlier this year, when they brought in £26m.

The £31.3m they are taking from the Barnes and Castagne deals covers two-thirds of the transfer fees they were owed for both. These are the final two instalments, with City paid a fee up front in the summer.

The details on Companies House show Barnes' switch to Newcastle totalled £34.5m, with City now bringing in the final two payments of £11.5m each. For Castagne, the deal came to £12.5m, with the last two instalments at £4.2m and £4.1m.

City have done regular business with Macquarie over the past five years, and have taken out loans secured against Premier League TV money and parachute payments.

Club set to insist on signing Fulham player – Offer is now being prepared
Following rumours from last year, it seems Atlético Mineiro continue to be interested in Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz.

This story is today brought back by journalist Thiago Fernandes, who features some details of this chase to Goal Brasil.

It's claimed that Atlético hold their interest in Muniz and are preparing an offer to land the Fulham striker next year.

According to Goal Brasil, the Brazilian club are still to open fresh talks with the Whites or the player's staff to know the conditions for a deal.

Still, Atlético's idea is to spend something around €4m on the signing, letting Fulham keep 50% of a future transfer. That's how much the London side demanded in the summer talks.

With Muniz playing little, the Belo Horizonte side believe his valuation has not gone up, and will keep that price as a reference.

Despite Fulham's effort to keep the player last summer, he's only had 302 minutes in six appearances this season, and didn't contribute to any goals.

His contract with the Whites runs until 2026, with an option for an extra year, and maybe a return to Brazil could be a good solution for all parties.

Fulham offer €50 million to sign Santiago Gimenez

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months, with Fulham keen.
Santiago Gimenez had an impressive 2022/23 campaign with Feyenoord, helping them win the league title. He scored 23 goals across all competitions, and a number of top clubs were keeping tabs on him. A report from W Deportes has claimed that Fulham have already submitted a €50 million offer to sign the 22-year-old.

It remains to be seen whether Feyenoord are prepared to sanction Gimenez's departure midway through the season. Replacing a player of his quality could be difficult in January. The 22-year-old Mexican international has all the attributes to develop into a top-class goalscorer, and he could prove to be a superb acquisition for Fulham.

The striker has started this season in impressive form as well, scoring 15 goals across all competitions. He will look to hit the ground running in the Premier League if the transfer to Fulham goes through.

The West Londoners sanctioned the departure of Aleksandar Mitrovic during the summer transfer window. But they are yet to bring in a quality replacement. Gimenez would be a solid long-term acquisition for them. Signing him for €50 million could prove to be a bargain in today's market.

The 22-year-old will probably want to join a big club capable of competing for major trophies, and a successful spell with Fulham will help him secure a big move in the near future. The reported €50 million offer seems quite reasonable, and the Dutch outfit could be tempted to sanction his departure. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops.

Regular football in the Premier League could help the 22-year-old improve further and fulfil his tremendous potential. A move to Fulham would be an excellent next step in his career, and Gimenez would get to test himself at the highest level.

Fulham will want to push for European qualification in the coming seasons, and signing talents like Gimenez would certainly help them climb further up the table. A signing like him in January could galvanise the squad and transform their performances during the second half of the season.

But having already had a taste of the UEFA Champions League, a move to Fulham might not be too tempting, especially considering high-profile clubs across Europe are keen on securing Gimenez's services.

Fulham vs Manchester United to see Premier League refereeing first
Rebecca Welch will be on fourth official duty when Man United visit Fulham this weekend. It is the first time a female official has been appointed to the role in the Premier League

Manchester United's Premier League trip to Fulham on Saturday will see a refereeing first after Rebecca Welch was named as fourth official for the game.

Welch will become the first female fourth official in the top flight having previously been a Premier League assistant referee. The official is a trailblazer having become the first woman to take charge of an EFL match when she refereed Port Vale against Harrogate in League Two in 2021.

Earlier this year she became the first female to referee a Championship match when she took charge of Birmingham City against Preston North End in January while she was also the first female referee to officiate an FA Cup third round tie, a feat she achieved in 2022.

The referee for the game is John Brooks, assisted by Lee Betts and Matthew Wilkes. Jarred Gillett is the VAR with Sian Massey-Ellis the assistant VAR. The game is a 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday and will be shown live on TNT Sports.

Welch, 39, hails from the north east and has been a FIFA listed referee since 2015. In December 2020 she was added to UEFA's elite women's list.

It could be a busy afternoon for Welch given that when United faced Fulham in the FA Cup last season, Cottagers manager Marco Silva was sent off as Fulham also saw two players dismissed in a crazy few minutes of a bad-tempered affair which United won 3-1.

The Reds are currently eighth in the Premier League table while Fulham are three points further back in 15th but could leapfrog Erik ten Hag's side with a win in the capital.

Postecoglou sweating, with Arsenal to join Tottenham, Fulham in race for Ivan Toney alternative
Arsenal have been tipped to sign Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez in January, as a 'cheaper' alternative to Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Eddie Nketiah scored an impressive hattrick against Sheffield United on Saturday, but Mikel Arteta is still keen to bring in a new centre-forward.

Toney is one player who has been on Arsenal's transfer shortlist for some time. Brentford boss Thomas Frank has admitted that he will be for sale in January.

The England international scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season, so it's no surprise to see clubs queueing up to sign him. He is set to return from his suspension from football due to gambling breaches in mid-January

Reports suggest that Toney is valued at around £65m. Arsenal are unwilling to spend that much on him, however, and therefore Arteta will have to look elsewhere for a new frontman.

Now, it seems that Arsenal could battle with Tottenham and Fulham for Gimenez this winter.

Arsenal tipped to sign Gimenez over Toney
Transfer journalist Graeme Bailey has talked up the idea of Arsenal signing Gimenez, suggesting that an overall deal could be cheaper than signing Toney due to the fact the Mexican would command a smaller wages.

Previous reports suggest that Feyenoord will consider offers in excess of £40m. As mentioned, Tottenham are very interested in the 22-year-old, while Fulham are willing to pay €50m (£43.5m) for him this winter.

"Gimenez is one to watch out for for Arsenal as well, we know Ivan Toney is the one who's been linked, but Gimenez would be much cheaper in terms of wages than Toney," Bailey told the Talking Transfers Podcast.

"So is the deal more expensive? Possibly not. He will be on the agenda of an awful lot of teams come the summer.

"I don't think we'll see Gimenez leave in January, but we have seen reports that he'll be available for £40m, if that is the case, he will leave in January, but I think the chances of Feyenoord letting one of the best players in Europe leave for £40m, I don't see it myself."

Gimenez signed for Feyenoord in the summer of 2022. Last season, he scored 15 goals in 32 league games, firing the Dutch club to the Eredivisie title.

The 22-year-old has been in even better form this term, netting 13 goals in just nine league appearances so far. Therefore, it's no surprise to see several Premier League clubs keen on signing him.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Arsenal test Feyenoord's resolve with a bid for Gimenez in January.

Ipswich Town: Fulham defeat sees Blues crash out of the Carabao Cup
Ipswich Town crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the fourth round, falling to a 3-1 defeat against Fulham at Portman Road.

The Blues struggled to find their feet and paid the price, with Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz and Tom Cairney all finding the back of the net before Elkan Baggott's late header, which proved to be no more than a consolation goal.

Fulham ended up taking the lead just nine minutes into the game as Bobby Decordova-Reid picked up the ball in a central area, playing two wide men into acres of space down the right, one of which was Wilson. The Wales international ran through as Christian Walton rushed off his line, allowing him to work the ball around the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net.

They came close to a second just six minutes later as Fode Ballo-Toure was afforded far too much time down the left, allowing him to float a cross into the box. It looked like a poor delivery, but ended up clipping the crossbar before Ipswich could clear the danger.

With the way the game was going, Town needed a slice of luck. They almost had it in the 17th minute when Marek Rodak's poor pass was pounced on by Kayden Jackson, who rushed forward and tested the goalkeeper with a powerful effort, winning a corner that ended with a wayward shot from Janoi Donacien.

The Blues thrive on playing quick football on the counter, catching teams out of their natural shape, but the issue came when Fulham started dominating possession rather than trying to get at Kieran McKenna's side like Wolves did. Their slow build-up play and immense discipline presented very few opportunities to run at the back line.

When they did go for goal, like Andreas Pereira did from distance on the half-hour mark, they were never far away from doubling the lead.

The tempo didn't improve in the latter stages of the half, but Fulham had one more big chance before the break as debutant Axel Tuanzebe cleared a cross as far as Calvin Bassey, who fired a shot at goal with the outside of his boot. Walton palmed it against his own post, with the ball trickling back the other way before Town could clear.

It was much of the same after the break, where Ipswich tried to revert to the expansive style that they're known for to test Fulham's back line. Ultimately, the quality shone through, and the Cottagers doubled their lead five minutes after the restart.

Andreas Pereira played a superb low pass from the right flank, which cut through the hosts' back line and bobbled through to Muniz. From there, the striker had a simple finish, tapping the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

The second goal really took the sting out of the game, dampening the mood at Portman Road. Unlike the win in the previous round against Wolves, it felt like Fulham had taken Town out of the game entirely. Chances were few and far between, and the visitors were happy to toy with their opponents rather than going for the kill.

Late substitutions ultimately changed that as both sides brought on some of their regular starters, but it was Fulham's Reid who helped to wrap up the win. It was his low ball from the right that set up an onrushing Cairney, who slotted the ball through Walton to make it 3-0 with 13 minutes to play.

A defiant Portman Road joined together to remind the players of their league position, which was met by a late consolation goal from Elkan Baggott, who scored his first senior goal for Town in the 79th minute as he headed Jack Taylor's corner into the net from close range.

A late flurry of chances encouraged the hosts, who had a chance to reduce the deficit in the 90th minute, missing a header from close range. However, despite eight minutes of added time, they couldn't find a way back into the game as Fulham progressed to quarter-finals.

Town XI: 4-2-3-1: Walton; Donacien (Humphreys 70'), Tuanzebe, Burgess (Baggott 61'), Clarke; Ball, Taylor; Jackson, Aluko (Humphreys 61'), Harness; Ladapo (Hirst 70')

Attendance: 28,221 (1,685 away)

Fulham beat Ipswich to secure quarter-final place
Goals from Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz and Tom Cairney took Fulham through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Ipswich have been flying in the Championship but made 11 changes for the tie at Portman Road and were well beaten.

Fulham took an early lead when Wilson opened the scoring after being found in space on the right by Bobby De Cordova-Reid.

Keeper Christian Walton charged out towards Wilson, who calmly skipped past him and slotted into an empty net.

Muniz doubled the Whites' lead five minutes into the second half by tapping home at the far post after being set up by Andreas Pereira's excellent delivery.

And Cairney sealed a resounding Whites victory by firing home from near the edge of the penalty area after De Cordova-Reid's pull-back.

Elkan Baggott headed in a consolation goal for the hosts.

Fulham: Rodak, De Fougerolles, Ballo-Toure, Bassey, Castagne (Tanton 90), Lukic, Cairney, Wilson (Iwobi 69), Pereira (Reed 69), De Cordova-Reid, Muniz (Jimenez 69).
Subs not used: Benda, Robinson, Ream, Palhinha, Vinicius.

Ipswich 1-3 Fulham: Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz and Tom Cairney strike as Premier League side ease past Kieran McKenna's second string to reach last eight of Carabao Cup

Harry Wilson put Fulham ahead early on and Rodrigo Muniz doubled their lead
Tom Cairney made it 3-0 before sub Elkan Baggott scored a late consolation

Fulham can be forgiven for feeling as though a fourth-round trip to Portman Road was like walking into the eye of a storm on a night when Storm Ciaran threatened to batter parts of the nation.

There was no sign of any howling wind or torrential rain in East Anglia. Yet the visitors deserve credit, nonetheless, for weathering the hurricane that is Kieran McKenna's Ipswich, especially on their turf.

To put it simply, Ipswich do not lose on home soil. It's nearly time to haul the Christmas decorations from the loft and still the Tractor Boys have only lost once at Portman Road in 2023.

In that time, 18 sides have left with their tails between their legs. Some swept aside, others blown away. But Fulham proved the perfect storm chasers and proved too strong for the hosts to withstand.

The early warning signs were there when the Premier League side went ahead inside the opening ten minutes. Few inside Portman Road will have seen their side carved open in the manner they were for Harry Wilson's opener for a long time.

Harry Wilson put Fulham ahead from close range in the ninth minute against Ipswich

Wilson latched on to Bobby de Cordova-Reid's pass and took it around keeper Christian Walton

The hosts never threatened to set up a nervy finish, with Rodrigo Muniz and Tom Cairney putting the game out of sight early in the second half for Fulham.

'We know that they are having an amazing season and they have been so consistent in a competition we know it is not easy to do what they have been doing,' said Fulham boss Marco Silva.

'From the first minute we were the dominant team on the pitch, like we wanted to be. Job done and well done to the players. They showed on the pitch a will and desire to come and win the game.'

Substitute Elkan Baggott helped to soften the blow of this defeat with a late consolation but Ipswich will hope this defeat proves to be inconsequential in their promotion push.

The fact they can even be in the conversation for a return to the Premier League just a few months after being promoted from the third tier of English football is remarkable in itself.

But this was a little taste of what they could win should they return to the top flight after more than two decades in the wilderness.

Credit to Silva's side, who treated this clash with the utmost professionalism. With McKenna opting to make 11 changes, Fulham's slick football was too much for the hosts's second-string side to handle.

Too many passes went astray, too many second balls dropped to men in white shirts. In the Championship, you can get away with such slip-ups. Not against Premier League opposition, though, and within ten minutes, the hosts duly found themselves behind.

Forward Rodrigo Muniz refused to be muscled off the ball his marker and knocked the ball in-field to Bobby De Cordova-Reid, taking three Ipswich defenders out in the process.

De Cordova-Reid had two options. A ball through to Andreas Pereira, who was racing from a central position towards goal, was tempting. But even more tantalising was the acres of space that Wilson found himself in over the far side.

With Ipswich keeper Christian Walton charging out of his box in a futile attempt at closing down the angle, Wilson chopped past the stranded gloveman and passed the ball into an empty net.

Ipswich's persistence to maintain the high press which has served them so well under McKenna was to be admired, yet the ease at which Fulham cut through made it look naive at times. The hosts were fortunate to see Fode Ballo-Toure's cross deflect onto the bar just minutes after falling behind.

Silva's side were given an almighty scare when goalkeeper Marek Rodak's dozy pass was intercepted but he was on guard to tip Kayden Jackson's effort around the post. In response, Pereira hammered an effort from 30 yards just wide for the away side.

Fulham doubled their advantage when Wilson's low cross was finished by Rodrigo Muniz

Midfielder Tom Cairney put the game out of sight early in the second half for Fulham

McKenna's side have come to earn the moniker of comeback kings after pulling off heroic in the previous round against Wolves and in the league against Plymouth on Saturday.

But within five minutes of the second half, that looked unlikely even for them as Pereira's perfect ball across the box left Muniz with the simplest of tap-ins at the far post.

Fulham captain Cairney put the result of the tie beyond doubt after firing past Walton from inside the box, before substitute Baggott's consolation from a corner for the hosts.

'It was a tough game but I think it's a night we'll be much stronger for,' said Town boss McKenna. 'It was always going to be a massive challenge, irrespective of how the game went or the team we picked. We've had good performances in the competition but this isn't our time to be in a position to go and chase this trophy.'

Fulham book place in last eight of EFL Cup with Ipswich Town success
Fulham have booked their place in the last eight of this season's EFL Cup after a 3-1 win against Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The Tractors Boys came into this midweek clash possessing an 11-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, however defeat for the hosts looked a distinct possibility from very early on when Harry Wilson put the Cottagers ahead inside 10 minutes.

Rodrigo Muniz doubled the Premier League side's advantage in the opening stages of the second period and Tom Cairney bagged a third to secure the win, however Ipswich did manage to net a consolation in the final moments of the match courtesy of substitute Elkan Baggott.

With the visit of Manchester United at Saturday lunchtime in the forefront of Marco Silva's mind, Fulham made eight changes to the side who drew at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, with only Bobby Reid, Calvin Bassey and Timothy Castagne maintaining their starting berths for this fourth-round clash.

Ipswich named a completely-different XI to the one which dramatically beat Plymouth Argyle in the Championship on Saturday, with goalkeeper Christian Walton earning his first start of the campaign, whilst centre-back Axel Tuanzebe appeared in a competitive fixture for the first time since March when he was on loan at Stoke City.

Having won 11 of their 13 matches during their sensational return to the second tier so far, the Tractor Boys were looking to bring the game to their Premier League opposition in the opening stages, but Kieran McKenna's side were caught desperately on the break, allowing Fulham to take control of the contest.

After some brilliant hold-up play from Muniz, the Brazilian found Reid in the middle of the park, and the former Bristol City man looked up quickly to see Wilson in acres of space on the right flank at Portman Road, having escaped the attention of left-back Harry Clarke for the hosts.

The Welshman was sent through on goal by his teammate and skipped past the onrushing Walton - who in truth would have been better staying closer to his goal - and the 26-year-old finished calmly into an empty net from just outside the box, bagging his first goal of the 2023-24 campaign.

Despite going behind early on, Ipswich did not let the setback impact their efforts to bring the game to the Cottagers, and right-back Janoi Donacien - starting only his fourth game of the season - had a shot which failed to worry Marek Rodak in the visitors' goal, yet proved the Championship side could venture into dangerous areas.

After taking a one-goal lead into the changing rooms at Portman Road, Fulham were quick out of the traps in the second period, and a delicious cross from Andreas Pereira allowed Muniz to get onto the scoresheet during only his third start of the term, with Mexican striker Raul Jimenez being Silva's preferred option in the Premier League.

Former Man United man Pereira picked up the ball on the right flank and swung a low cross into a dangerous area between the Tractor Boys' backline and keeper Walton, and 22-year-old Muniz managed to ghost into the corridor of uncertainty to tap home his team's second of the evening.

Now having 40 minutes to score at least twice against first-tier opposition, Ipswich strangely opted to shuffle their defence, with centre-back Cameron Burgess being replaced by Baggott, suggesting that head coach McKenna had Saturday's trip to Birmingham City in the Championship in mind.

Attacking substitutions did arrive for the hosts in the form of striker George Hirst and Chelsea loanee Omari Hutchinson, however the Tractor Boys' exit from the competition was essentially confirmed after a long-serving Fulham star put the Cottagers three goals ahead in the 77th minute.

Following a clearance from right-back Castagne, Jimenez sent attacker Reid racing down the right, and the 30-year-old bagged his second assist of the game when his pass found Cairney, who punched a shot towards Walton's net, with the returning keeper unable to keep the ball from sliding under his body and into the goal.

The hosts grabbed a consolation just two minutes later through substitute Baggott, who found himself completely unmarked from a corner-kick and headed in Jack Taylor's inswinging delivery, although the result of the contest was already settled at this point.

Ipswich's loss in this EFL Cup fixture represents only their second defeat in all competitions so far in 2023-24, with McKenna's boys last tasting defeat after a dramatic seven-goal thriller with recently-relegated Leeds United in the Championship on August 26.

The Tractor Boys' supporters will not be too concerned about their performance this evening considering that they made 11 alterations to their starting XI, and fans should fully expect the raft of fringe players to return to the bench when the East Anglian club travel to face Birmingham City in the second tier on Saturday.

After winning a fixture away from Craven Cottage for the first time since the opening-day success at Goodison Park against Everton, Fulham will be looking to record back-to-back wins when they welcome Erik ten Hag's Red Devils to West London on the weekend, with the Cottagers having the chance to leapfrog their visitors.

Fulham ease into quarter-finals with win at Championship high-flyers Ipswich
Goals by Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz and Tom Cairney denied Ipswich another top-flight scalp.

Ipswich Town 1 Fulham 3
Fulham eased through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2004 with a 3-1 win at Ipswich.

Marco Silva's team were up against a Town outfit that had only lost once since their promotion to the Sky Bet Championship in April, but the Premier League side showed their class in Suffolk.

Harry Wilson provided the breakthrough for Fulham in the ninth minute with a cool finish and Muniz grabbed his first goal for the club in 19 months early into the second period to put the London outfit in control.

Tom Cairney confirmed Fulham's win with a third in the 77th minute and, while Elkan Baggott reduced the deficit late on, Kieran McKenna's Championship promotion hopefuls suffered a rare defeat in front of a packed Portman Road crowd.

The last meeting between these teams was three years ago in same competition and Aleksandar Mitrovic decided the tie that night, but goals had been hard to come by for the visitors since his summer exit to Saudi Arabia.

It was a different story for Ipswich, who put another three past Plymouth last weekend, but the high-flying hosts were 1-0 down after only nine minutes.

McKenna would have been disappointed after Ipswich's back four was pulled over to the right and Bobby Decordova-Reid spotted the unmarked Wilson, who impressively side-stepped the onrushing Christian Walton before the Welsh winger slotted into the empty net.

Goalkeeper Walton was one of 11 changes made by the home side and he almost conceded again six minutes later, but breathed a sigh of relief when Fode Ballo-Toure's deflected cross bounced off the crossbar and to safety.

Fulham also shuffled their pack with only three players retained from the draw at Brighton and Marek Rodak atoned for his poor pass when he tipped Kayden Jackson's low effort wide soon after the opener.

The quality of the Premier League side was clear though as Andreas Pereira arrowed a 22-yard shot wide before the visitors hit the woodwork again, with Ipswich's second-string struggling for fluency.

Calvin Bassey started the move with a fine run out from the back and nearly provided the perfect finish, but Walton unconvincingly parried his poked effort onto the post after Axel Tuanzebe, on his first start for Ipswich, cleared Ballo-Toure's cross straight to the Fulham centre-back in the 44th minute.

Town failed to heed that warning sign and, after no substitutions were made at the break, Silva's men doubled their lead five minutes into the second period.

A slick counter-attack did the trick with Wilson able to find Pereira and his cross took a slight touch off Ipswich defender Cameron Burgess to fall into the path of Muniz, who fired home from six yards to open his account for the season.

Wilson took a whack to the face straight from the restart, but picked himself up to waltz into the Town penalty area before Burgess' slide tackled denied him and Janoi Donacien blocked Bobby Decordova-Reid's follow-up shot.

McKenna made changes to try and set up a grandstand finish, but Cairney made the result safe when his low effort went through Walton after another assist by the excellent Decordova-Reid.

It looked like Ipswich would fire a blank for the first time this season, but substitute Baggott headed home a Jack Taylor corner with 11 minutes left to give the 28,221 crowd a consolation goal.

Fulham cruise into quarter finals
Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz and captain Tom Cairney got the goals as Fulham cruised to a comfortable win at Championship high-fliers Ipswich Town and reached the last eight of the League Cup for the first time in nineteen years.

Marco Silva's side inflicted only Ipswich's second defeat of a stunning season despite rotating their squad with Saturday's lunchtime meeting with Manchester United looming large. The Londoners handed a first-team debut to the 18 year-old defender Luc de Fougerolles, who looked composed in the middle of the back more, as part of eight changes to the eleven that battled to a bitty draw at Brighton on Sunday. They never seemed seriously in danger of an upset at Portman Road despite Town's strong start to life back in the second tier.

The Premier League outfit needed just eight minutes to assert their authority as they clinically punished poor defending from Town's second string. Rodrigo Muniz held the ball up brilliantly on the half way line to find Bobby De Cordova-Reid, with the Jamaican international spotting Harry Wilson entirely free on the right wing. The Welsh winger gobbled out the chance gleefully after Christian Walton, making his first start after a lengthy injury lay-off, made a doomed dash out of his penalty area.

Fode Ballo-Toure, who impressed on debut in this competition against Tottenham, then saw his deflected left-wing cross cannon off the crossbar and, barring a hairy moment when Marek Rodak saved superbly from Kayden Jackson after fluffing his clearance, the visitors were in complete command. Ipswich, skippered by former Fulham forward Sone Aluko, showed eleven alterations from the side that started a five-goal thriller against Plymouth Argyle at the weekend with Cameron Burgess, who had made his senior debut here as a defensive midfielder at the start of that forgettable Felix Magath Championship campaign, in the centre of defence but they barely made any inroads at all.

Andreas Pereira nearly conjured up a stunning second from nearly 30 yards out and Calvin Bassey came even closer at the very end of the first half, embarking on a languid run down field before seeing his strike from distance pushed onto the post by Walton. Silva's side continued to take the attack to the hosts after the interval and it took only five minutes for the critical second goal to arrive. Muniz turned in a lovely low ball from Pereira – on his 50th Fulham appearance – at the back post before taking his leave as part of a treble substitution five minutes later.

The Cottagers extended their advantage with a wonderfully worked third goal. Timothy Castagne's ball down the right was flicked into the path of the onrushing De Cordova-Reid by substitute Raul Jimenez and Cairney tucked home a pinpoint cross from the edge of the box. Walton will feel like he could have done more to keep it out on a disappointing night for the experienced Ipswich goalkeeper – but the gulf in class between these sides was evident.

McKenna's side did get a consolation when Indonesian defender Elkan Baggott bulleted in a back post header with eleven minutes remaining. Walton did deny De Cordova-Reid from a clever short corner before Omari Hutchinson drilled over from eleven yards right on the ninety minute mark. Devan Tanton, who was on the bench for a second successive game after being named in the squad for the trip to the AMEX, got a late reward for his fine under-21 performances at right back by replacing Castagne to make his Fulham debut deep into stoppage time as the Whites completed a professional display at one of the country's form sides.

Fulham get trip to Everton in League Cup quarter final
Marco Silva will return to Goodison Park next month in the League Cup quarter finals after his Fulham side were drawn against Everton having eased past Ipswich at Portman Road this evening.

The Whites won their opening Premier League fixture of this season in the blue half of Merseyside with Bobby De Cordova-Reid's second-half strike and some brilliance from Bernd Leno in goal securing a narrow 1-0 win. Silva managed the Toffees in sixty matches having been appointed in May 2018, four months after his departure from Watford. The Portuguese head coach was sacked in December 2019 after a heavy defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Everton are currently fifteenth in the top flight having won at West Ham on Sunday and Sean Dyche's side beat his former club Burnley 3-0 to reach the last eight this evening. Fulham have never progressed beyond the quarter finals of the League Cup, having been beaten after losing an epic on penalties at Leicester City in 2000 and being beaten in extra-time by Liverpool the following season.

A precise date for Fulham's trip to Goodison Park will be confirmed in the coming days with the quarter-finals scheduled to take place in the week commencing on Monday 18 December.

FULL QUARTER FINAL DRAW:

Everton v Fulham
Chelsea v Newcastle United
Port Vale v Middlesbrough
Liverpool v West Ham United

Ties scheduled to be played in the week commencing Monday 18 December

Erik ten Hag confirms midfielder will miss Fulham clash with injury
Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Casemiro has sustained an injury and will Saturday's trip to face Fulham, as per Samuel Luckhurst.

The midfielder was withdrawn at the interval as Manchester United were trailing 2-0 to Newcastle United, with fans expecting that the substitution was due to him being on a yellow card, or his poor performance in the first half.

However, the manager has since established that it's neither, and has instead stated that Casemiro is the latest addition to United's ever-growing injury list.

Casemiro ruled out of Fulham trip
He had just missed three matches through a mix of suspension and an ankle problem, which he picked up on Brazil duty, so it may be a reaggravation of the issue.

It means that Ten Hag will again be forced into a midfield shuffle at the weekend when United face 14th-placed Fulham at Craven Cottage. Anything less than a win would be just another humiliation after a string of such poor, poor results.
