Cannot see him okaying for the first team this season, unless it is the early rounds of the cup. League 1 or preferably a championship loan would be a good option for his progression

It appears that there's a Palhinha regen in the bundesliga playing for Koln who might be worth a bid

I think he announced he was staying with Köln even though they will now be in Bundesliga 2.
That's a shame, we could've got him in as a long term backup project (although money talks and I guess it would be possible even so)

He's good but I'm pretty sure he's already stated he's staying at Koln, and also while he is of similar mould he's not at the level required yet at all. Talented boy and potential there, but would be a big step down from Palhinha and a big risk at this stage of his career. Maybe in 1-2 seasons.

Randomly, I have a feeling he's missing the Fulham boat.. we're in a squad building phase now and bringing in young players who have a lot of potential, whom if they produce the goods, then those slots will be kept for at least the next 2-3 years.. By that time we'll have had enough of our own academy prospects coming through and you'd imagine a bigger budget (e.g. if we sold ESR for £80m and Andre for something similar - not that I'm advocating for them thriving and leaving, i'd rather they stayed), but in essence if they thrive we've got a good chance of a couple of things happening - firstly european football, secondly a better reputation and thirdly a bigger budget.. with that in mind I think we'd probably be able to expect to appeal to a better and more proven level of quality of player and with Marco still at the helm and with an ability to develop players, we are probably bypassing this kid for where we're at currently.

I could be wrong though. The other thing i've noticed, though don't know how to place it, is that he's got half the successful tackles per game that Palhinha had. Feel that's quite a big difference in terms of impact/quality in a meaningful way?

I'm happy for him to go out on loan but did League 1 last season. I'd rather see him step up to the Championship this season in a similar progression arc to Stansfield. What can he gain from another season in League 1 if he's good enough to play a level higher against better players?

Yeah and sounds like they want it resolved quickly as they want Ugarte in early for their pre season tour. Looks like they are under a fair bit of pressure to sell as they thought they'd get a fair bit from Saudi for Cassemerio but not going through. Wonder if we can use this to get McT somewhere around the £25m mark rather than £30m. Here's praying.

Quote from: FFC1987 on July 31, 2024, 08:30:38 PMThat feels cheap for a starter in La Liga at his age. Is he running down his contract or is the contract length short then?

Didn't have a brilliant season last year. Villareal let in a lot of goals. Only ones with a worse defensive record ended up last and second last.

Did you ever watch a minute of him play?

Presumably this is t aimed at me but if so, no. I'd never even heard of him as I don't tend to see La Liga sides outside of CL. Hopefully my post regarding why he was of low (ish) value doesn't come across as questioning his footballing ability. I was just struggling to appreciate why a reg starter for a decent La Liga outfit, that's also young, was demanding such a low fee. Presumably it's to do with contract length or something, hence that question.

As usual, if Silva wants him, and it's not breaking the bank, sign him up!

Nope, was to the guy implying because they conceded a lot, he didn't personally have a good season, which he did.

Surlyc

I think £23-25m is a fair price for McTominay given his age, likely salary and ability level. He should be a very good signing at that level.

Lots of unhappy United fans that seem to think McTominay should be worth £30-40m. However if we only got £42m for Palhinha, I don't think we should be paying more than £25m for McTominay.

Makes for some interesting reading, notably "He was our only left-footed CB, only one who could reliably progress the ball via passing, good runner as well, incredible aerial presence."

I've posted on this thread...his stats really do look pretty incredible for his price and age. Compared him to Bassey, Tosin and Chalobah on FBref just out of interest and he fares incredibly well...

Interestingly is progressive passing they have noted is actually the lowest out of the 4 but isn't far off. Tosin tops this which is no surprise as one of his biggest strengths. His overall pass completion is slightly lower. Short passing he is actually better than the others but long passing is where he may struggle a little by the looks of it.

His defensive stats are brilliant and he and Bassey are pretty similar at the top.

He is second only to Tosin for ariels won and not a million miles off. Looks a real threat at set pieces.

Considering the other 3 are £20 to £30 million players and we have just picked this guy up for circa £5 million could be an absolute steal.

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 01, 2024, 01:46:44 PMI've moaned about McTominay given the fee and his age but of all the players potentially coming in, I think he's the most likely to make a big impact on the team this season. No adjustment required, no fitness issues, just a well-rounded, does-what-says-on-the-tin, PL quality player.

I just hope we sign him in addition to Andre and not as an alternative.

Once again though, we get into August and haven't actually signed anyone except Sess on a free. Need a few announcements ASAP.

I'm pretty sure we will be buying two midfielders this window. Getting McTominay and Andre in would be great business.

lATEST RUMOUR - Our potential record signing did not go to Portugal but back to the US. Where he had a medical there. Hence the delay.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

According to Transfermarkt he only has 1 year left on his contract, which could explain the low fee.

It wouldn't be the first time (I think) that the club has announced a double signing. He's probably already with the team.

JEEVES

I'm surprised no one has said something to the effect of "I personally don't think we were ever actually interested in ESR, It's all just agents trying to drum up interest and start a bidding war" yet

FFC1987

I personally don't think we were ever actually interested in ESR, It's all just agents trying to drum up interest and start a bidding war. Its a smokescreen to finally get Jason Koumas over the line.
