Andreas lining up in the deeper CM role again in today's friendly... Could be we don't need Scott if he makes that position his own and can just go gun ho for Andre and/or another CDM

Could be

I cant comment on Andre as have never watched Brazilian league football, and not seen it on any TV i have. But form those that have seen him play they say he is good so hopefully thats correct and not the rumours we have agreed with him he can go if a certain fee is paid

Either they are breaking the FFP rules or the rules aren't designed well. It just isn't fair...
I think they are meaningless. City, supposedly, have 115 breaches, Leceister have been found guilty but still spend, Newcastle, supposedly on the brink, are after Palaces cb, and rumours about Wolves, Villa, Everton and Forest

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 10, 2024, 03:20:22 PMWhat do you mean "more than they earned"? I assume you're talking about player sales but the top clubs earn about £500m per year from general commercial revenue, so player sales is really just one small piece of a larger puzzle.

I always think the criticism of Chelseas is borne out of that one year they took the pi&& signing Mudryk at al, and various irrelevant factors like their dodgy former owner. Otherwise, IMO they actually have quite a good (albeit ethically questionable) idea/model of signing young players, loaning them out to partner clubs then selling them for profit.

Any FFP system that says you can only spend "revenue + X" is going to be unfair on the smaller clubs but we know that, that debate is nothing new.
Yes I meant earnd from outgoing transfers. Clubs also don't only spend money on transfer, they spend it on player and staff wages, pitch maintenance, etc.

As for the other part, I agree with most you're saying. My problem is, that the FFP is designed in a way that favours big clubs heavily. Those tricks and loopholes Chelsea uses are smething that the "smaller" clubs can't use.

I mean if they're not technically breaching FFP rules, then it is fair, we're either just not doing the same thing, or don't know how to?

Chelsea sold hotels to afford extra stuff? Football club's are becoming big and multifaceted businesses now, more than just football venues - look at our new riverside stand, restaurants, bars, hotels, gym.

Think Real's new stadium is similar - I'm sure quite a few stadiums are now purchasing extra land to develop the land along side the football, but for mixed use - making modern stadiums community/social hubs to increase revenues.

They have sold a bunch of players for profit this summer, so I don't think the spending is that notable this window.

Their issue is they are not spending on top talent. It's mostly like for like. I don't see them improving their results with the players they are bringing in.
They spent almost 200 million more than they earned in the previous season, and this season they spent around 30 million more than they earned. And apparently they are close to completing a signing of Pedro Neto from Wolves for more than 50 million.

What do you mean "more than they earned"? I assume you're talking about player sales but the top clubs earn about £500m per year from general commercial revenue, so player sales is really just one small piece of a larger puzzle.

Yeah their income is £500m and ours is circa £200m so they have an extra £300m every year to spend.

Add to that all incomings are banked immediately whereas all expenditure is amortised. So if they make £100m profit in sales this year £100m goes on the books. If they spend £200m all on 5 year contracts only £40m comes off the books this year. Spent twice as much then but still £60m to spare.

They will still of course have £40m from this years purchases coming off next year as well but as long as they keep making massive profit sales they are fine.

If they keep buying badly however this could all come unstuck. There has to be a point they run out of homegrown pure profit players that are worth a tonne. They are paying very high fees for most of their purchases who if anything have decreased in value as they've been rubbish so no profit in these players. Very risky longer term. They do however have a ridiculous number of players so prob still some they can continue to sell for profit the next few years.

Quote from: Ara's bacon crisps on August 10, 2024, 09:59:03 AMFurther 'evidence' of the 'value' to be had in the transfer window if you wait a bit is Nketiah. Earlier in the summer when we were rumoured to be interested, Arsenal were supposed to be looking for £40-£50m. I see it reported today they're now apparently looking to let him go to Marseille on loan, with an obligation to buy for £25m.

Can't help feeling that this is a one-off window for clubs like us with a few quid in their pockets to make hay whilst some big clubs are strapped because they're finally taking FFP/PSR seriously, having been spooked by the various points deductions last season.

Sadly, Bournemouth have probably now joined us in the 'cash to spend' club with the crazy fee received for Solanke, but knowing the way Levy works he's probably done a deal to pay it off at a fiver a week anyway.

Think anyone saying Nketiah would cost £50m would have been laughed out the room. As far as i can tell it's gone from a reported 30m GBP in June to a loan and 30m EUR (26m GBP)  obligation to buy for Marseille now.

Bournemouth have already spent more than us this window, our transfer strategies have been poles apart since promotion and I worry they'll progress ahead of us in the coming years because they've built a good, young squad.

Oh I agree they should have been laughed out of the room and maybe it was just agent talk to boost the price, but I do dimly remember silly money being talked about.

I'm not so sure about Bournemouth long term. A lot of their good young signings have got the difficult second season ahead of them where quick study Premier League players have now seen them once or twice and will have a plan for them. Plus they've just lost their main striker and remember what that did to us for a bit. Could be sticky for them?

I think we're reasonably in that slight gambler position with our transfers, taking calculated risks to try to get to the next level and looking for players who may have lost their way a bit (very reminiscent of Roy's time) but if we can get them going will also represent transfer value later if we decide to cash in.

I remember Ajax, Everton and Leicester fans online offering to drive Bassey, Iwobi and Castagne to us, but now I think all three could cost at least double what we paid if anyone came calling.

Gone are the days when we splurged on Seri, Anguissa, Cavaleiro and Knockaert - to name but a few - without any thought for the future or any resale value. ESR will be worth a fortune in a couple of years if it works out here and if Sess rediscovers his mojo with us, it's not too outrageous to imagine we could be selling him for £25m again in a couple of years.

I get that you're nervous about our approach to transfers now by not getting players in early, but I like the fact that we no longer have our pants pulled down on transfers and are prepared to negotiate hard and not be taken for a ride anymore.

Ive read some mind boggling things about our own players on here but this really takes the gold medal.

"Crazy fee for Solank", who scored 19 goals for Bournemouth, yet Pereira for 50 seems reasonable to people because he press well. Well, so does Solanke, he presses really well actually - and score goals.

Anguissa had resale value, evidently, considering how good he turned out for Napoli. It was just put mess of transfer strategy that signed him without knowing why.

And to think that anyone would pay 40 mil for Iwobi, 28, is just laughable.

We constantly moan about other clubs demanding high fees (McTominay for 25? No way!!) and yet we also absolutely claim that our own players should be over valued (Stansfield to be a 20 m player and so on)

I get that we are supporters and love our club and players but lads, c'mom, some of ya, get your heads out of your a*ses
Nice, as usual.

If you think £65m for an average Premier League striker who's already failed at a higher level is reasonable, that selling Anguissa at a loss is OK and someone when desperate like Forest wouldn't pay £30m for Iwobi (basic fee was £15m) when they paid £40m for Gibbs-White, then fine. You do you.
You are missing my point entirely. I dont think any fee nowadays are readonable, but I do understand the market to some extent. And according to the market the Solanke fee isnt as crazy because clearly strikers who scored goals will always be highly valued, regardless of what you might think. And someone actually payed that. Same can be said about other strikers

Fact is Spurs payed 55 mil for Solanke, no one will ever come close to paying that for AP. Despite how "good" he is at pressing for us.

If Solanke scores 19 goals for us, some people on here would go full meltdown for selling him so cheap. But when its someone elses player we seem to take an extreme approach

Surely Fab doesn't go to Brentford for €20m, that has to be some sort of wind up

Reports from Portugal that Fabio Carvalho will join Brentford. That would be annoying.

More than annoying...that would be pretty horrendous. AP in the 8 and Fabio to us?

alfie

Well I guess if Silva doesn't want him, it's not a loss to us.

I mean it bumps our transfer kitty by £4m but surely we should be bringing him back at that price and essentially getting him at £16m when you negate the sell on fee

Romano confirming now

I feel sick. Was bad enough seeing him in a Liverpool shirt but this. Horrendous.

To be fair we need an electric left winger more if AP does play 8 but I hate this with all my being. Only slight positive is they are paying us the sell on fee. Still absolutely horrible.

Twig

It's a good pick up for Brentford. I know we get £4 mil but I'm still gutted.

I guess that means Andreas is staying.

Still we got £5-7m from the transfer plus £4m from the sell on fee (presuming what I've read on here and reports are accurate). So if it makes anyone feel better we made about the same if not more out of the Fabio deal than Liverpool did.

The sell on was likely on profit and I think he was sold for 7m so it likely is 2.6m to us.
