I agree with him to an extent. It's the one major negative of Marco basically being in charge of transfers. The large majority of players that have been brought in since he became manager have been successes. However, nearly of those transfers are short/medium solutions aged 25+. Marco is ambitious and wants a top Champions League level job so he is always going to choose the ready now player in their prime over a young prospect with a lot of potential who isn't necessarily ready to help the club immediately with high resale potential.

Now I wouldn't change a thing as long as Marco is here as his transfer record is fabulous but there is a downside.

I'm happy with the downside and will take it till he gets a bigger club.as he's a safe pair of hands.

Quote from: BestOfBrede on July 02, 2024, 09:30:30 PMCan anyone explain how Chelsea are still allowed to spend millions when they still haven't had their overspend breach sorted?

I understood that them and Man City were still being investigated?

Surely if you breach the rules you can't later sell players/make deals to cover the initial losses!

If so, we may as well jump on the band wagon!

I would think Everton are well peeved.

It is all about knowing the best names to put on the brown envelopes.

Surlyc

What Chelsea (and others) are doing is exactly what Juventus were done for a couple of years ago (i.e. inflating mutual transfer values) over the Melo/Pjanic exchange. They received a €20 million fine and a one-year ban from European competitions for that.

It is fraud, not just in an FFP/PSR sense but in an actual legal sense. Will be interesting to see whether the PL uses the Juventus example to stamp this out, although I suspect not.

The easiest fix? Just say that transfers between clubs are netted off for PSR and fix the PSR period to the end of the summer transfer window.

Please cite source for "Marco basically being in charge of transfers" because I really can't believe this is still being thrown out after years and interview after interview directly from people at the club like TK And Marco themselves saying it's a joint effort (3 tick system - formerly a 2 tick of just stats and scouting). How are we still having this convo in 2024?

We've dug out the interviews directly countering this statement many times here before and yet we never have statements from official sources outside of people on this forum saying Marcos "basically in charge" (presumably wanting to do this to say that's why our transfers have been good)

According to TK and Silva himself multiple times there are multiple departments involved in the identification and purchase of targets and he plays a very active part in transfers still.

Direct quotes on the matter:

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/3260885/2022/05/03/tony-khan-i-dont-want-fulham-to-be-a-yo-yo-club-i-just-want-us-to-be-a-yo-club/

"Yet Khan is responsible for all but two of the transfers in the squad that has blitzed the Championship with 106 goals. Fulham have outscored every other team by at least 34 goals. Khan considers it to be Fulham's best squad for many years and he is encouraged by the fact they have a full summer to prepare for the top division."

"We have extensive databases. Generally, every player we bring in, almost with no exceptions, has this standard of data. It (recruitment) has always been rooted in data but it's a process that has evolved and the human component is also important, too."
--------
"Since then, Khan has kept in regular contact with Silva and Mackintosh, as well as the scouting department, to work "as a collaboration" that makes sure to take into account the manager's wishes.

"Rodrigo Muniz is a good example," Khan says of a player who was signed from Brazilian club Flamengo after Silva's recommendation. "We managed to track several hundred minutes of his youth data but that was far less than we would normally have. Usually, we would have thousands upon thousands of minutes but Marco had scouted him a lot. That was probably more of a human decision than data and it has turned out great."

Khan identifies Tosin Adarabioyo's move from Manchester City as a more typical example of Fulham's recruitment. "Tosin was one I felt really strongly about. I was at the Cottage when we played Blackburn in 2019 and Tosin was playing for them on loan. I was watching him thinking, 'That's exactly the player the club needs'. What put me over the top was the data. Tosin had tremendous data. That was a personal experience, to a point, and a very good deal for the club."

------
Then from this interview from a year ago with talksport:

"its a partnership like all things" "we talk, I bring in the analytics and we watch the video and Marco and I each have our opinions" "...we go back and forth...marcos leading the team out and doing an amazing job running the squad and Im still doing my job as the director of football managing the transfers and Im still in charge of the transfers at fulham"
https://youtu.be/J8wB03IL_9s?si=xlcVNI6OewEWUhC1&t=168

From Under parker:

"Tony Khan by his own admission has control of the club's transfers, overseeing a "double-box ticked" approach based on statistical and scouting input. It is a collaborative approach, with Parker more engaged with recruitment meetings and buying into the process than any of his predecessors."

(So scouts + stats + Manager, parker was the first to be more involved and willing, and now Marco has continued that)

.....

So can we put this idea to bed and move on from it please or at least understand it's based only in something no one from the club has said officially and is just what some people seem to want to keep saying despite all the repeated official interviews and publications saying the contrary.

As for our buying of players currently ready rather than "for the future"  - We needed this to stay in the league and stablise rather than gamble on youth.
We achieved that goal, and perhaps now can explore some younger talent to blend and balance with that. We have some young talent in Muniz and Stanno up top, Bassey in defence and plenty players in their mid to late 20s that still have years in them in their supposed prime....and have been linked to lots of young players - including Andre and Luis last year, so we shall see how we go from here.

No real update on Twitter but Bayern's chief propanda officers in Romano and Plettiberg have both said there's a breakthrough in negotiations for Palhinha. They've amusingly said a price hasn't been agreed yet but I'm guessing they watched his defensive masterclass the other night and realised the price is going up not down and got on with it

Strange that there is a breakthrough, thought it was a done deal a couple of days ago.

I assume it will end with Bayern increasing their bid after a month of hemming and hawing. Probably not as high as last season, but a lot more than £35 million.

Gi'z £45m+ addons and let's call it a day and get on with life after Joao

Thailand Mick

Announced on sky Bayern agree Palhina deal £47.4m

What with the money and the Mitro money. Hopefully while never being able to replace those players. We will have a bit of dosh to spend wisely.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

Done. £43.2m rising to £47.5 looks about right to me. Always felt anything around 45m would be a wrap... ultimately historically it's very good business for a 29-year-old CDM outside of European teams who's made it clear he wanted the move so On we go!
Wish Joao the best of luck, he deserves his shot at the Champions League and hope he wins some silverware there. Glad we don't have to play him that's for sure.

Finnans Right Peg

Glad we get a decent amount for him and that it will not drag on all summer .

Best of luck Joao

I can't recall what our net spend was at the close of last summer window after the Mitro sale but thought it might have been +£25m? We paid £18m for Joao, so in theory do we have ~ £50m + to spend until we are "flat" from those two players alone? We haven't reinvested.

I don't believe so; sales count as fees banked all in one go, whereas incomings you amortise across the whole contract. I think we signed perms on four and five year deals that we paid fees for so you're spreading the £12m for Castagne, £20m for Iwobi and £20m for Bassey over larger chunks meaning it was less of a hit last year. The Mitro money also lands for this year, with the Palhinha money landing next year for FFP (July 1st is the start of the new financial period) so it probably gives us more headroom to spread out our spending to do a rebuild over two summers now rather than having to sign everyone this year with the Mitro fee offsetting outgiongs.

Hopefully it is done so we don't miss out on targets. If the Saudis didn't piss about so much with Mitro I think we would have had a chance to get Gyökeres as a replacement. Hard sell to go to mid table side as number 2.

Very happy he has gone abroad and not going to play against us next season
Remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.
I will be as good as I can be and when I cross the finishing line I will see what it got me

I would be totally bewildered that this time around we don't have someone in place to replace Joao. Quite confident that same applied as last season when we have our target locked in before transfer agreed. We have done some daft things before in transfer market but with Marco again being linked though no substance to Saudi the powers be would be pretty stupid to antagonise the manager so early into pre-season.
