Car tax just another one of the myriad of stealth taxes that we get hit with.
My car is 3 years old and costs £695 I think per year. If it was new now, the first year tax would be £2190.

Though supposedly a larger chunk of it goes to transport infrastructure. Which means that it's all been blown on HS2- which has now, incredibly/stupidly/infuriatingly, become the most expensive railway in the world.

If it makes you feel better, I now live in the States and my Mercedes insurance is 1,500 per year. Insurance here is out of control. House insurance 5,000 per year, health insurance 12,000 per year.

It would be a lot more affordable if regular re-testing was required after a certain age.
 
It's expensive because statistically there are too many older people behind the wheel who aren't capable anymore.
