Title: NFR - Who is the most despised player you ever saw (Live or TV doesn't matter)?

For me it is a close call between Billy Bremner and Vinnie Jones with Billy nicking it by a very short nose.

You wouldn't be saying that is Billy played for us Mr Finn. No wonder they have a statue of him outside the Leeds ground. And therein lies the problem. Do we despise them because of the way they single-handedly demolished Fulham or do we despise them just because...?
I don't like Tevez as a person but you must admire his footballing skills. I don't like anyone who dives or play acts when tackled. There are a fair few of those, Nunez being the latest.
If I have to choose somebody it would have to be Roy Keane. Not only did he break somebody's leg but he gloated about it in his biography. To purposely do this to a fellow professional is about as low as you can get.

The Argentine player -- Rachin? -- who literally kicked Pele out of the 1966 World Cup was pretty despicable. Of today's players, Marc VanBommel is 12 stone of complete trash.

And then there's the little Scouce spiv who moved from Newcastle to Shepherd's Bush. He's top of my list.

Apart from Mark Cooper it would have to be Dennis Wise, scumbag both on and off the pitch.
A right little snidey person.

El Hadj diouff, Spitting on fans and players, cheating and mocking the injured Bitters player. Scum. As for Wisey, i stayed in the same hotel as him in Cyprus and he was a lovely bloke, no big time Charlie attitude. I guess if you're a black cab driver you might think otherwise.

It's a strange concept to me because I don't know these guys as people and they're just sportsmen.

There are people I know that I despise and likewise politicians for what they've done but how can I hate someone because of the way he plays a game.

I used to live near the old Chelsea training ground at Harlington and you would find the chelsea players in some of the pubs/hotels nearby on occasions(9-11 being the most famous time).
Anyway one day at the Holiday Inn I ended up speaking to Wise & Desailly and I just found Wise to be your typical english footballer, obnoxious to the point of wanting to hit him.
As for Desailly found him to be a really polite and intellegant person(and built like a brick outhouse as well).
It was very much the little & large show when they were together.

...to despise is a very strong sentiment, I disliked chopper harris, and Jackie Charlton, and dislike EH diouff for reasons that are plain to see, wise, well I have met him too and would like to bury him in the sands at Morecambe!

No I don't despise anyone...

No wait - john terry, everything about him, including that he loves his mother and father...

Antonio Rattin it was. Got sent off in the semi in '66 v England. Argentina didn't actually played Brazil though.  Brazil were eliminated in the group stage, and Argentina were in a different group.

Player I disliked the most was Peter Storey. Thug of the lowest kind, and he ended up playing for us.

I always disliked Roy Keanne and never understood the praise he gets. For me, he was Vinny Jones with an Irish accent. He never achieved the category of  " Keane is playing, must go to the game" status.

Mr. Finn, Bremner was an outstanding footballer. A hot head, yes. I remember a game at Fulham when he was a kid about 20. The Fulham players did their best to wind him up in the first 15 minutes. He was fouled multiple times, then retaliated. The home fans started chanting "off, off, off" Undeserved I thought. I liked him up to the point when he was banned playing for Scotland for getting involved in a bar brawl after a game in Denmark. He was the CAPTAIN and dragged 4 other young lads into it. Muppet.  fp.gif  They also were banned but I believe later in their career it was lifted.

My memory isnt what it once was but in one of the world cups from the 80s there was this Spanish keeper who was a nasty piece of work... Began with a B, and it wasn't bar steward (although it should have been).

It always seems strange to see the likes of Moore, Pele, Cantona appearing in movies: it doesn't seem strange to see Jones on the screen as I never considered him to be a footballer.

Just remembered the ugly Spanish central defender from the early eighties.
His name was Goicochea(?) or something like that. He "did" a number of players, including Maradona and earned the rather apt nick name of "The Butcher of Bilbao" as he played for Athletico Bilbao. Sort of a Vinnie Jones with Roy Keane's evil brains

Muscat came back home to Oz and the A-League so we could all get to see, first hand, why he was one of the most hated men ever in English football. I remember seeing him kicking our boys in his usual fashion whilst playing for Palace - in a pre-season "friendly". what an arse... But I must grudgingly admit he did have a bit of ability. Keano is another that I could never work out as I think he was a very talented footballer, trapped in the body of  psychopath ! Vinnie Jones = waste of space, Bremner, scary little bar steward but he could play a bit too and Wisey, massively punchable but quite a clever footballer IMHO.
Siding with LB here as despised is an adjective I don't use for any footballers that spring to mind but Keano comes closest for gloating about maiming a fellow pro.  096.gig

Pele was kicked off the pitch by both the Bulgarians and the Portuguese in 1966.
Rattin was a classic Argentine Number 5, a very solid pro and one club man with Boca Juniors, who got sent off for swearing by a ref who couldn't even speak Spanish and fairly understandably caused a scene. The Argies were branded "animals" after the game by Ramsey, despite England outfouling the "animals" 33-19.

Ronaldo (not the Brazilian version). As talented as he is, the whining, kicking at opponents, diving, throwing his own club teammate under the bus at the WC (an @ss in his own right), along w/his 'I'm hated because I'm rich and good looking' schtick cries out for derision.

Gattuso, DeRossi (he of the elbow to Big Mac's face), and Materazzi's antics on the pitch make it easy to hate.

Rattin was sent off for getting 2 bookings both of which were VERY justified. Most of the refs these days would have given him his marching orders in the first half already.

The second one was for "violence of the tongue" by a referee who didn't understand what he was saying but who later admitted he "did not the look" on Rattin's face. Just a little bit tenuous.* He was sent off in 1st half.

What Rattin was actually doing was walking up to the ref after EVERY decision against Argentina, typically with hand on hip with the other hand with index finger pointing and then waving this almost under the ref's nose and ranting away. The ref was quite right to book him both times. The ref was quite wrong to let him get away with it for that long. It was after 35 mins, OK! It seemed like an hour at the time. Good riddance to that piece of work.

Again, players chat back to the referees constantly nowadays and I don't see them get sent off en masse.
It struck the English public as something outrageous at the time as it wasn't really done in Europe but was not uncommon in South America. Of course, one would question the wisdom of doing this to a ref who didn't understand a word (but obviously did get the finger-wagging) but when you have a situation where a ref can't explain a decision or even properly warn the player (I am not sure that Rattin even understood that he'd been booked already), the latter has a reason to feel aggrieved. Even more so that he gets sent off but his team mates are being kicked all over the pitch.
It has been argued that this whole incident sealed Argentine football's descent into the cynicism and violence which was such a feature of the Intercontinental Cup matches of the following years. This was especially sad as the Argies already turned away from the romance la Nuestra after the debacle that was the 1958 WC for them. And their treatment in 1966 pretty much wiped out the remaining vestiges of the idealism in their apparoach to the game. They came back from England as heroes who were hard done by those horrible Europeans and weren't going to let that happen again. A pretty tragic turnaround in a matter of 8 years.

Billy Bremner could play. And that's the tragedy really, he didn;t have to resort to the fouling, bullying, game that he played. Vinnie Jones on the other hand was a talentless thug whose game was based on stretching the laws to their limit to intimidate opponents.

Rattin knew he'd been booked. He was just arrogant enough to think he could get away with it. Sent off and damn right too.
I wouldn't be so certain, given that Jack Charlton apparently only found out about his own booking from the paper the next day.
(A quick scan of the FIFA website doesn't show the Charlton booking; however, it does not have the correct times for the 3 Argentina bookings, so not sure how reliable it is.) Of course, the major confusion around the booking/sending off process gave rise to the system of yellow and red cards in time for the next World Cup.

Terry

Is that Mister Karl Henry or Monsieur Thierry Henry?

That would be Wolverhampton's favorite thuggish enforcer...Mr. Karl Henry.

Agreed Karl Henry was a disgrace that day!
I myself have not been watching football as long as most people so must agree with Mr Rider on his.....and ever since Fat Lampard came to the Hammy End and 'shushed' us after scoring a few seasons back, possibly my most hated player

As for Nunez....no time for the bloke
And Diego Forlan....he just musnt be liked.

We have set the system up to not allow certain words. We frown upon the use of swear words, even those that are masked in some way by 'special' spellings, or words that may be a offensive. It's one of the ways we keep the board as civil.

Thanks for your explaination Mr RR.

I fully accept and appreciate the measures taken to ensure that this board remains 'civil'.

I'm a bit supprised at this one though (unless I've missed something). - I know the word might be used in an offensive way as part of a rhyming slang phrase, and, perhaps it's now considerd offensive to use it in connection with someone's hair colour (as in Bremner's case), but it's difficult to see how it could be avoided if discussing, for instance, the kind of biscuit often dunked in tea, the great drummer of Cream or, indeed the kind of beverage I am supping as I write this.

No big deal - just surprised.

Interesting how many conclusions can be drawn from a simple "why".

Presumably, he "can't be liked" because he scored goals in a European final against Fulham. Is that all it takes for a player to pop up under "despised" tag? He arguably broke Houllier's Liverpool and Jerzy Dudek's career in 2002 with the two goals at Anfield; however, as a Liverpool fan I don't feel any antipathy towards him at all.

He's been a model pro his whole career - notoriously fanatical about diet, fitness regime and all that - and it's well know that he has a bit more between his ears than your average footballer - he doesn't suffer fools gladly and thus has a reputation for being somewhat "aloof" within the game.

Wonderful post for the Liverpool board. I am sure they all would love it. Try it next time.

Unfortunately, how many Fulham fans do you actually think give a rats arse about: Houllier, Liverpool, Jerzy Dudek and what Diego Forlan eats?

(A quick scan of the FIFA website doesn't show the Charlton booking; however, it does not have the correct times for the 3 Argentina bookings, so not sure how reliable it is.) Of course, the major confusion around the booking/sending off process gave rise to the system of yellow and red cards in time for the next World Cup.

Yes, he knew he'd been booked - even in Argentina the ref standing in front of you writing in his book means you've been booked. Rattin was an arrogant twit who got what he deserved, Mr Pata Troll.

Actually I changed my opinion slightly of Drogba after we played the blue scum just after they signed Torres earlier this year. I sit down where the players warm up (until this season) and we were making a few comments to him warming up about how poo Torres was, he gave us a few cheeky smiles. Then Fulham were down at the Hammy end on the attack and Drogba was stood there watching, in someones way. A voice cried out "oi Drogba, get outta the way" and he ducked down and gave an apologetic wave.

It seems, what made him "arrogant" was the fact that as a captain he decided to speak up for his team. There are other viewpoints than (the somewhat xenophobic) English view of the game, which is gospel on these shores.
PS So "disagreeing" = "trolling"? That's just great.

"England was outplaying us. They had us pressed in our own goal so we had to freeze the match. I ask the ref for an interpreter but he did want the delay, I insisted and insisted, he got tired of it and sent me off. I sat at the red carpet that they put for the Queen, i walked slowly to the dressing room while the threw chocolate bars to me and i twisted the England flag at the corner and show it to them. After that they thew beer cans instead of chocolate bars."

Ah, this is interesting. Do you have a link to the original?
Because in the version I've seen so far, the whole thing started because of a booking for a team mate (amid persistent England fouling).
As for walking slowly off the pitch and a bit of petulance after a sending off... this is surely a unique moment in world football.

Perhaps you've never seen Admin in person.

As for the famous "face-off" photo above, it makes me smile that it's always used on this site to reinforce the opinion that Bremner was a bad 'un. Thing is that the "heroic figure" who is "standing up to the little criminal" is one of the dirtiest players I've ever seen. He's clearly the agressor in the photo, but he gets all the sympathy.

And as for our Russian Scoucer, many new posters may be wondering why he has a Japanese flag as his avater. Well, during last summer's Womens World Cup, Mr. Pata made repeated posts trashing the US women -- in the same smarmy way he's defending Rattin [and thanks for the quote, FP]. When the US women lost to the Japanese in the thrilling final match, he crowed loud and long and then his avatar changed.

I have NEVER recommended anyone being sent packing, but I could be convinced in his case. He's a WUM from the get-go.

Didn't like the USA's style of play, didn't like their win over Brazil. Japan played wonderful football the whole tournament and I wanted them to win the whole thing. Just to wind up the American users on this board? Pfffft... Yeah, right.

And a beautiful header to level.

Yep, the USA had a horrible style of play.

And a beautiful header to level.

Yep, the USA had a horrible style of play.

How did the Russian women do, Nev? Hmmm, nope, I can't remember either.

I didn't say that the Americans were "too soft".* In fact, ESPN compared them to Stoke (whose style is very popular on this forum) after the Brazil game. Do Stoke not score "beautiful headers"?
*They weren't until the shoot out in the final, where they collapsed hilariously.
PS Plus I found the booing and villification of Marta during and after match against the USA absolutely outrageous.

This reminds me of that old joke:

Q. Why can't you circumcise a Scouser?

A. Because there is no end to those pricks.

"vilification of Marta" - please, give me a break.

Oscar Wilde couldn't put it better: shove off

Woof! Clincher. The biscuit from the B&B is, no doubt, on its way.

Ok, this thread has run its course and I think ALL opinions about players, and posters, have been discussed. Lets move on.
