That's interesting. It's a pretty long way to go considering we have another game in three days - probably a good 4,000km round trip.
Khan might just want to take the opportunity to do a press conference whilst Jol is in the general vicinity but the fact that they're going to such great lengths (and that it's happening in Jacksonville rather than London) does surprise me a little bit.

Or Costa Rica as originally touted... I don't like the fact that the club and our plans are having to cater to khans plans and go to him... It's disruptive and if he genuinely cared about the club and our preseason then he would've come to us.. It's clear we're not a top priority for him. Even bill gates travels to see people who work for him.

And it may turn out that Khan goes to Costa Rica with Jol and Brede after the press conference.

Quote from: General on July 18, 2013, 09:33:58 PMHe may very well do both but it is a bit unfortunate. It not just the days that it takes from preparation/rest, it's another series of flights and interviews and distractions amidst the general chaos of the present circumstances. there's no paranoia in that concern... i don't think we expect anything from this press conference and that may even make it a bit worse. It is not that big of a deal, but it is inconsiderate.

I suspect rather more had heard of Fulham FC in the US than Jacksonville NFL team in the UK! That's not to be disrespectful or stir an argument but we know there are plenty of people who follow football in the US and have at least heard of Fulham because of Mc Bride, Dempsey, Bocanagra, Johnson etc. We're mainly having these discussions on this board because of the number of Americans already here for that reason, not just because of some new interest following Mr Khan's new involvement. Those following NFL in the UK - very few, although some are quite vocal!
Any change of ownership inevitably brings uncertainty and concern as to whether the new owner will respect and care for the club as we'd all wish. It is interesting and reassuring to hear therefore that Jacksonville fans like him and leap to support him when we have expressed our concerns. To keep the club in its home town when there was a move to relocate somewhere else sounds familiar and it's reassuring that he did that. Holding a few games in London is largely irrelevant because for all the reasons that have been aired recently it will just be a curiosity and simply will not catch on.
Some of my fellow English Fulham fans appear to be a little paranoid about Mac, Jol and Hangeland being dragged off to Jacksonville at this time and feel that "the mountain should have gone to Mohammed". Well I don't see the problem. Mac will have to liaise closely with him and they need to get to know and understand each other well, likewise Jol and it's good and unusual to see the team captain involved in this way as well. They can't see how he works and operates in London or Costa Rica. It's a perfect opportunity. It's important to make the most of the mutual learning opportunities and synergies. Not that we want ruddy great video boards at each end flashing adverts (or would ever get planning permission, thank goodness!) but more prosaic, relevant matters. Neither would it hurt to play a game in Jacksonville as a promotional exercise. Presumably there would be a suitable team in the area.

Quote from: btings on July 19, 2013, 05:35:32 PMYour claim of a general lack of knowledge about the EPL, Fulham, and Dempsey and other 'name' players for the U.S.M.N.T. is a bit misleading. While it is true that most Americans know nothing about the EPL, it is also true that families with children and young adults playing the game know a lot about the EPL, and because they follow American players abroad, they know plenty about Fulham, and Everton, and AV, and so on. And adults who have played the game or who have stumbled upon it are plenty aware of same. Also, while many in the U.S. might profess to know little of the game, and act indifferent about it, you don't hear that kind of talk when the U.S Men's and Women's national teams are playing in international tournaments. I've been quite impressed at the knowledge some of the 'I hate soccer' crowd shows during such tourneys. A LOT of women have played the game. Millions of kids have and are playing. There's something else a bit misleading about any statistics, however vaguely referred, of the American public's general lack of knowledge of the game, the EPL, Fulham, certain U.S. players in the league, etc. The majority of U.S. youngsters in Grade 8 can't find Canada on a world map. They routinely get the official founding of America by Columbus off by at least a century. I could go on, but it's just depressing. They do, however, know how to reach Level 6 on their favourite computer game. They know the words to unbelievably stupid rap songs.
I agree, nobody in the US knows Fulham unless they actually follow the PL. Even the ones who know Dempsey would have been hard-pressed to tell you what team he played for two years ago.

Cheerleaders are one of the worst and most awkward americanisations of football around imo. Half time should be fat blokes trying to hit a cross-bar, or kids from local schools playing against each other. They're maybe not quite as bad as that geezer dressed as a woman flogging his play, or those tenors of rock from last season, but they're still pretty bad.

Pine Grove Market and Deli (1511 Pinegrove Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32205) has rolled out a sandwich they're calling "The Fulham."
"We were already working on the sandwich, but we didn't have a name for it," said Ron Bajalia of Pinegrove. "My buddy came up with the name and it just works perfectly."
The sandwich (shown above) consists of "homemade London Broil fresh from our butcher shop, with Gruyere cheese and a homemade horseradish cream on a pretzel roll!" according to Pinegrove's facebook page and costs $10.
Everything was made from scratch for the sandwich, except the pretzel roll. It's the only sandwich Pinegrove offers that uses the pretzel bun.
Reaction to the sandwich has been very good. They sold out on Friday.

I didn't think you were taking a pop at the US. I can see your point. Perhaps they could walk through the stands and sell beer. A bit of ale and half naked women...has an interesting ring about it. :008:
If you want the worst of American sport you need look no further than ESPN; self appointed experts blathering constantly, banners with redundant "info" running across the bottom, meaningless stats ( this is the first time Johnny Kickball has scored against a team in red in 3 yrs, 4 months & 2 and a half days). And at halftime more drivel. If you gotta take something, take the ladies. They appeal to a higher portion of your brain than does ESPN.

Cheerleaders are vile.
Only if you're gay. Just sayin.
I'm going to play devil's advocate here. There have been many times during a close (American) football game that the cheerleaders come onto the field during the two-minute warning in the 4th quarter. My gut response is always, "Get the &@!% off the field, we have a game to finish!"

Cheerleaders belong at college and high school games, not at any professional ones ... well maybe at NBA games since they bore me.
What? Love the cheerleaders speak for yourself.
