The world of TV's is ever changing.  We are also looking for a new tv to upgrade what we have and hand down what we have to our daughter.  We are looking more in the 70" inch range but a 55" is more then enough.  Still, you should do a search on the latest technology as there are different levels of "high definition".  4K, 4K ultra, 8K ultra, OLED and QLED.

Bottom line is do the research and find what meets your needs.

I'm an AV Tech here in Ohio. Out of all the TVs I would highly recommend LG for amazing picture quality. If you want something that will give you good picture and be durable and integrate into any smart system you can't beat Sony!

A/V has been my hobby for 40 years and right now the undisputed best picture belongs to LG's OLED technology. They make panels for others like Sony who add in their electronics and processing but I recommend LGs version to my friends and several have bought them and been thrilled.

Screen size depends on budget and room size but in all my years helping people with their home theatre systems I'm not sure I've ever heard someone say they wish they had bought smaller TV, save for perhaps if it overwhelmed the room physically.  It is possible however to buy one too large for how far you able to sit from it. For HD (1080p or greater) you are very safe with a 2:1 ratio or even a little less meaning for a 55" screen you should be able to sit around 110" away without seeing pixels or pixelation.  With 4K that goes down more. Demo the sizes you are thinking of first in a store taking note to stand your expected distance away. My advice is always to get the biggest you can afford that doesn't look goody in your room and you can't see the pixels of.

Any technical questions feel free to PM me.

Cheers, good luck and COYW!

The bigger the better. You soon get used to it. I had a 55inch moved up to the best samsung 4k 65 inch (8k is a waste of time at the mo) and love it. Have a walk around the store and you will know which one is right for you just by looking at it. By the way my picture quality is super sharp and clear.

If this is your first step into Smart TV be careful, no doubt they are a magnificent tool but you
could do with an advance course on the operation which varies from set to set.
Also they have a mind of their own and temporary self curing snags can pop up from time to time.
Best talk to a friend who has one and will demonstrate the set up for you.

I don't think there is such a thing a poor picture quality these days but more critical is sound although poor sound is usually the fault of the broadcaster.

I am going to buck the trend. I got rid of an old 40 inch tv years ago. I was going to replace it but in the end have been watching a small tv/DVD combi quite happily. I do live in a poor reception area and would always go on line for anything I couldn't see. I have a computer screen as big as the tv.

With anything it depends how much, how big, how many people are being catered for and if tv watching is worth it for you. I struggle to find things to watch, hence the DVD, on line preferences. But go for a big cinema experience if you are going to use it.

I enjoy watching TV but used to hate how they would dominate a room . That was until I discovered the Samsung Serif and the Samsung frame - it's a different world

Goodness me! I really cannot understand the obsession with ever larger TVs that dominate a room. My partner brought a 28" with her and we use that. It's twice the size of what I had before and quite big enough. I certainly wouldn't want anything bigger. Huge TVs just seem tawdry and tasteless to me (no offence intended).

I've been buying a panasonic tv for many years now and currently have a 55" 4k ultra smart unit with built in free view. Now 5 years old, cost new £1000 but you can get a similar one today for around £800 with 5 years guarantee, you won't be disappointed.

Replaced my TV for one in Costcos.

85" Samsung.. Half the price of a LG at the minute.   Pretty sure the projector I have in the kids Cinema room was from there, which is outstanding quality if you need more details on that? Think they are cheap too, it's probably the sound system and room soundproofing that's 95% of the cost. But it's not necessarily needed in a living room, just another option perhaps.

Rainy season just ending and a bit cooler in the mornings. Sangkha still quarantined but Cambodia now open so shouldn't be long before i can stay there. Having first Astra Covid jab on Wednesday, finally got the wife to have hers as well. New passport ready to collect prior to 1 year Visa Extension in January. Busy time for me, stops me listening to podcasts and reading novels. Really hope house move goes well and it turns into your dream home, also get some lucrative employment sorted out. Can't beat retirement mate, 23 years now, thankyou BP.

FWIW I just took delivery of the new Sky Glass. Voice activated and cracking picture quality. Looks as though there is a soundbar built in, but not had the opportunity to test the sound quality. Sky is built in and uses WiFi, so if you're like me and couldn't get it before due to lack of possible reception, it's perfect.
No I don't work for them, but I'm highly impressed with it to be honest. TV comes in three sizes: 43, 55 and 62 inches. 43 is plenty big enough for my needs, and exact same size and my previous one.

If that isn't of interest then get down to Curry's/PC World and have a look around. When I bought my last TV, the Samsung rep that was trying to make me spend money I didn't have, said "if I didn't work for Samsung, I'd buy LG because they're the best value for money".

So, long story short, LG...

I'd agree 100% with this. We upgraded our 55" Sony with a 65" LG a few years back. The Sony is now 12 years old (it had just come out the year prior when we got ours) and going strong on bedroom wall after we've moved 4 times, and the LG provides just a beautiful picture, as well as all the different apps available (even able to watch FFCTv on it via the browser app!)

I feel we need a separate thread where everyone compares how many inches they have. I've just bought a splendid 55 inch Samsung for 700 quid, which is working out quite nicely. However as suggested by others I would go for as many inches as you can; I do sometimes lament not having gone for an extra 10 inches

The display of the TV is the most important factor, there could be ghosting or other visual artifacts, do not only look at inches or brand, once you had made a choice, google that model number followed by reviews, if there is a video review even better.

Years ago a house mate worked at a TV store and convinced my uncle to buy a TV set with home theater speakers, when i looked at it, it looked like a nice set up , when it was turned on the picture quality was really bad, I then looked up that model number and they were all talking about the bad picture, very low ratings. It's the same thing with PC monitors.

Awaiting delivery of this  one, bought on recommendation, for the price it's apparently a bargain and a bloody good telly. £498 from ao.com

Hisense 55A7GQTUK 55 Inch TV Smart 4K Ultra HD QLED Digital Dolby Vision.b
Sorry but wouldn't buy anything made in China unless it was the only option. Will be more expensive but Samsung are made in Sth Korea.
Well TV all set up, very easily, especially for an old git that could write his technical knowledge on the head of a pin, thought I might have to get my son to do it.
Very impressed with the picture quality much better than the 50inch Samsung I replaced it with.
" Sorry but wouldn't buy anything made in China "  have a look around your house I would be surprised if you have absolutely nothing that was made in China.

As the FFC tilt is the only champ/prem game scheduled for this Friday, methinks it will certainly be available on hesgoal.

Absolutely right in that I have some stuff made but where I have a choice I will always go for something made elsewhere and while it may cost a bit more it normally is not a lot or the same by shopping around.

Of all the places I would like to retire it would be Devon or Cornwall.

I tried 2 years in Florida but didn't like or enjoy it as much as I thought I would.
Came back to Virginia last November,

Good luck on you move

TV prices have fallen in inverse proportion to their sizes and capabilities--to a point.  Today, you can buy a quality Samsung 1080P Smart TV with almost all of the bells and whistles for a pittance.  A 55" or 60" (diagonal screen measurement) version in most rooms is not too small/not too big.  Pick up a Samsung or Yamaha (for instance) sound bar if you don't have separate speakers.

Spend a bit more,  if you like, for a 4K resolution screen "Smart TV" which can access streaming video content via the TV itself, using its remote control device.  If you go the 4K route (which none of the networks are broadcasting in yet) you should look for certain  catch words such as "Native 4K" or "True 4K" which distinguishes such sets from those that are designed to stretch  or reach for a 4K viewing experience.  There are other key words to look for.  HDR+ and the number of HDMI ports in back of the TV.   You want at least two if possible.  In my personal opinion, Samsung makes better quality modern TVs than  LG does.  I also like Phillips.   Sony had this market, dominated, and I don't know what happened to them.   I would avoid Sony.  Toshiba makes OK TVs but not my first choice.  I'm no purist who has to get the best picture screen, and premium features.  I'm looking for the best quality/price combo around.  Initial and lasting engineering.  For me, Samsung is the way to go  now.
