During the close season with little football to watch I have been listening to much more music discovering new tracks and re visiting old favourites.
Pinching the idea from another forum and to run in conjunction with the Friday Evening music thread what is the best song/instrumental from any genre or decade that you have heard today?
My offering to kick the thread off is
Thanks in advance to WhiteJC for converting any links into actual clips
This morning: Princess Royal
The only tune I've been paid for playing - when busking in Prague.
Well if theme tunes count. I have been revisiting this practically every day.
The Theme Tune to Are You Being Served.
It just makes you feel like you are in a department store in the 70s, and actually pre-dates Money by Pink Floyd for use of cash registers.
Haha, for reasons that I can't really explain, I was listening to this absolute belter earlier.
Steve Winwood - while you see a chance
Carly Simon. You're so vain.
Stick a pony in yer pocket
Wouldn't it be good by Nik Kershaw great version.
6 by 6 Earl Van Dyke (keyboard lead for the Funk brothers)
Watching the Amazon advert, today and over the last week, in which a security guard becomes a chef, made me check out the backing music, it's Memphis Soul Stew by King Curtis. Worth a listen if you like your soul music.
Two instrumentals from me. After hours by Ronny Jordan and Walk on by by Peter White and Boney James !
Put this on your headphones and close your eyes...awesome.
Two, quite different, favourites. Chan Chan (Buena Vista Social Club) and Allegri's Miserere (Harry Christopher's The Sixteen)

I am glad you added this.I was watching TV and the ad came on and explained what it was to my youngest boy... He said he was suprised I liked it... I was about to give him what for when I turned to see him laughing.... what great track this is, I got it not long after it was released, it was along time ago anyway.
2CELLOS - Shape Of My Heart

In similar vein, I offer the wonderful:
No politics, religion or music....but in the week of a new release by my favourite band of all time I had to flout my credence
I have been banned from playing anymore of my obsession on Friday Evening Music. Well no that isn't true. But as this is my favourite band and I have just been playing this again and again. I stick it here. The brilliant Band Maid with a heavy song filmed in spooky Japanese style. The lead singers idea at the time.
Beth Hart - A Change is Gonna Come
Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove
Peter White - caravan of dreams
Dance to; be entranced by; just be amazed at the variations you hear in Maurice Ravel's fifteen minutes or so of absolutely musical magic 'Bolero', here performed by a group of musicians that starts from just one drummer in a Sao Paulo street and progresses from there ...

With very little good news coming from the club and only wild, worrying rumours. This seems an ideal time to remind us not to give up.

Band Maid often do what they call White Room instrumentals of their normal songs. They have them as extras on DVDs or added to CDs as DVD extras. Someone has put them together on Youtube. Promise I wont bore people with them all. But this I love as I love the original song.
Bob James - Angela
(the theme from taxi)
This version, and little film and interview,, of the traditional Lord Franklin, shows how Sinead O'Connor would really inhabit a song and it's emotions, conveying this listeners . It's from her album of traditional songs, which is very good.
Bob Dylan used the tune and some of the lyrics of Lord Franklin, for his own early song Bob Dylan's Dream. Here's a link of a rare live performance of this, for anyone interested.

Some excellent music choices. For something a little different yet still excellent a slice of beauty from Agnes Obel;
Bob Dylan and the Band, with Robbie Robertson, Manchester 1966: part of the world tour when they were all regularly booed, because previously acoustic folkie, Dylan, played with an electric band.

Don Henley & Bruce Hornsby - the end of the innocence
Richard Thompson is a brilliant British guitarist and songwriter, a founder member of Fairport Convention in the 60's, when he provided empathetic backing to some of fellow Fairport member Sandy Denny's greatest songs, such as Who Knows Where the Time Goes; and he is still performing and making great records, yet most people have never heard of him.
This song is supposedly about folk singer Anne Briggs, very big on the English 60's folk scene, who dropped out at the height of her popularity and disappeared, before reappearing many years later for a couple of performance - though it has also been said to be about Sandy Denny -maybe a mixture of the two.
Anne Briggs, here with highly influential folk guitarist Burt Jansch, formerly a member of Pentangle -

Bryan Adams - Summer of '69 (Live) . This is one of my wife's favourites. I didn't go to many gigs in my youth, and no festivals, but when I see and listen to this in my sixties, I can understand the attraction. Cheers me up on a bad day, and I find myself belting it out if I am alone at home (or miming it and listening on headphones if the family is in).

Ian Dury & the Blockheads - reasons to be cheerful, Pt.3
The incomparable Dave Hum:
If you know the tune, just listen to the variations!
American Jackson C. Frank suffered terrible burns, and was scarred mentally and physically, in an orphanage fire, when he was grew up, then came to England with the compensation money, and became big on the folk scene, and made a record, produced by Paul Simon.
He became an alcoholic and disappeared, and was discovered years later, back in America, homeless and on the streets - Paul Simon helping him out when he found out, getting him record royalties owned, but he died soon after.
But the songs from his one album were, and continue to be, much covered by other artists.
Bert Jansch and Al Stewart
Sandy Denny
Edwin Collins - a girl like you
New World Order -- Ministry
Hall & Oats - she got me bad
Homeland - NiNi Music/ Jayant Bhadula

Tears for Fears - elemental
Gilbert O'Sullivan - alone again (Naturally)

Zach Bryan - Oklahoma smokeshow
Duelling Banjos - Dave Hum
Del Amitri - nothing ever happens
I'm adopted myself, just knew I was born in Brixton from a Geordie mother, with an Irish sounding name, and who I never knew - that was from my wife's researches.
But my wife recently did further research, and actually found a photo of my mother- and there is a strong likeness, who was from the north -east, and went to live in Brixton, where she gave birth to me.
Anyway, I saw the great Mary Gauthier recently at a small club.
She was brilliant, and a far better experience to seeing Bob Dylan at Cardiff Arena not many weeks before that - Dylan was very good, but these big venues are very alienating, miles from the stage, with all the security, etc.
Anyway, Mary was also adopted, and this song refers to this. Maybe some adopted people out there might be interested in all this.
Sorry, couldn't resist putting another song up about adoption - Joni Mitchell's, Green, about her daughter from her first marriage whom she put up for adoption - though she was reunited with her later in life.
PostmodernJukebox

This is another wonderful cello cover of a Band Maid song. The original song is beautiful and moving. This cover is equally memorable. Relax and enjoy.
The beautiful voice with almost a throwback to the Radio sound of the Sixties and Seventies.
Emmylou Harris, great Townes van Zandt cover - her intro reminds me of a Billy Connolly story, about a typical Glasgow party, where everyone is drunk and singing of longing for home - but they've never been anywhere!
But the idea of escape from home, and of longing to return, is a big theme in country and the Blues, and folk - well, most can relate to this longing in some way, especially if your situation isn't great.

Taylor Momsen, the little girl who was in 'The Grinch who stole Christmas' always says she is much happier being a singer than when she was as an actress. The Pretty Reckless always a favourite.
I never knew she was in the Grinch film
Taylor has a great voice
The Pretty Reckless are a great band
Will post more of their songs at some future point
Khruangbin - So We Won't Forget
Seems apt for today. The brilliant (my second favourite Japanese Band) Trident.
Evanescence - Bring Me To Life
WARNING - CONTAINS ANIMATED VIOLENCE AND SCENES DRAWN FROM REAL LIFE EVENTS.
JUST RELEASED.
Lyle Mays/Pat Metheny - September fifteenth
Dire Straits - Tunnel Of Love
God's Away on Business - Tom Waits
Well it is getting near to halloween. A great album and a great track.
In English I think it's Nightingale. Based on Romeo and Juliet.
Miley Cyrus - used to be young
Chris De Burgh - don't pay the ferryman
I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Creedence Clearwater Revival
the Beach Boys - I can hear music
Soul Dracula by Hot Blood
Black Snake Boogie - FUZZRIDER
As the band are re issuing and remastering their back catalogue. This is also worth a play. A wonderful song but is it improved by the orchestral remaster. You decide. But the lyrics still hit home.
Paint It Black - Valerie Broussard
This one is an acquired taste, but as an instrumental it's brilliant.
Gary Scargill & Peter Oldroyd - "Hypertronic"
Hoodie & the Blowfish - only wanna be with you
Well it was yesterday - hope it counts - it was the bunch of young lads and lasses singing a song about Fernandez looking like a rat . And he really does .
Del Amitri - be my downfall
Heaven Knows - The Pretty Reckless
Marmalade - Reflections Of My Life
the Jam - that's entertainment
Diga Diga Doo - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
I've listen'd to this a few times now and its really grown on me
The Beatles - now and then
Not a fan usually of mixing and messing about with originals. But this is just brilliant. Imagine Earth Kiss and Fire.
I Had Too Much to Dream......by the Electric Prunes
Yesterday played a few Billy Fury hits. Tragic life, died so young and oft forgotten talent, at least by me.
Run for cover. Marcus Miller , George Duke and David Sanborn !

On Sunday I shall hopefully be watching live from Yokohama Arena via the computer. Having purchased my steaming ticket. Band Maid. In front of 17,000 fans to conclude their 10 year anniversary.
This taken from 5 years ago when the lead singer had just had her shoes stollen by the crowd and she has time to compare height with the barefoot assassin MISA the bass player. My favourite band of all time.
Daryl Hall and Darius Rucker - wagon wheel
Electric Light Orchestra - 10538 Overture
Peter Starstedt - where do you go (my lovely)?
Lead singer Josh Kiszka sounds like a young Robert Plant
Highway Tune - Greta Van Fleet
Well, just commenting on above. Greta Van Fleet big time channeling Led Zeppelin. And to very good affect. I'm big Zeppelin fan, and really enjoy GVF. Excellent band, they do have their own unique sound, but, Zeppelin huge influence. Just came out with their fourth album. Would encourage any Led Zeppelin fan to sample some GVF.
Lead singer voice a carbon copy of Plant....
Darius Rucker - only wanna be with you
The last 6 notes of "Something" (in the way you look) Beatles --- Thank you George.
Rock Me Baby - Stones & AC/DC
Playing for Change - waiting on the world to change
The Christmas Song. Nat King Cole .
Today i heard an absolute classic by Hazel O'Connor " Will You ".
Especially the Saxaphone Solo in the middle.
The Beatles - hello, goodbye
Just heard this on the strangest film ever - Titane (French)
Had forgot this song
Joe Walsh - life's been good
Sunday at 8AM our time I watched the streaming from Yokohama Band Maid concert. I appreciate that not everybody likes music they can't understand all the lyrics or even ROCK MUSIC. But these ladies are the best thing to happen to music for the last ten years. Anyway in Japan there don't allow filming by the crowd except by permission. This was one fan com from their song that was filming free. Hope it captures some of the spirit of the 3 hour concert.
Since someone mentioned the Zombies above, just wanted to post that I really like them. Several fave Zombies diddies for me are "Time of the Season" and "Tell Her No".

This brings back fond memories of sessions at the long-lost, much missed Ram Cider House, Godalming, where Manchester Phil used to sing this with a fag hanging out of the corner of his mouth. I think Shane was a hero of his.
It's about Salford.
Shane MacGowan was as much an artist of London as he was of Ireland. For obvious reasons this excoriating love/hate number is not often heard on the public airwaves.
Another Saturday Night - Sam Cooke
Hoagy Carmichael - stardust
Cumbersome - Seven Mary Three
Pickettywitch - that same old feeling
Inherit the Wind. Wilton Felder .

How about some Taiwan Metal Core? Not usually a fan of Harsh Vocals but if you read the lyrics and stick with it. You hopefully will enjoy it. All we need is FOF radio as the selections on these pages are so varied and entertaining as to make radio listening dull.
Two concerts, same era, both in potentially hostile circumstances, and both where the artists played for free.
The album, Johnny Cash at San Quentin, was a big hit in the late 60's - takes me back to teacher training college in Yorkshire - not because it was like a prison! - but when i was I lived hall of residence when i first went there, a bloke at the end of the corridor, Alex, also from London - decent bloke, kept playing it at full volume - Johnny Cash was his hero, and he dressed in black just like him -
The Stones at Altamont Free Concert, 1969, supposedly symbolises the end of the 60's Peace and Love era -

Many thanks for all the hard work you put in on your daily submission and also help in the past. You're a star must get FoF player of the season again!
no problem Ian, my pleasure
I've been to the Shepherds several times, its about a mile and a half from my house, we're very lucky in that there are several really good pubs/restaurants in the area and Nottingham town centre is excellent for "traditional" pubs and really good small "non-franchised" restaurants and bistros.

Love it!
Some early Band Maid from 2017.
The Wooden Song - Butthole Surfers
In similar vein: Cock up your Beaver.
I'm intrigued by the variations.
My favourite guitarist is used in a clever spoof by a fan who knows how to do these things. Old but fun for me.
Dusk Till Dawn - Fuzzrider
A rare Band Maid song written with English lyrics by Miku Kobato of Band Maid. But the music comes from their bestie friend Mike of Incubus who apparently are still going.
Crowded House - teenage summer
Goyte & Kimbra - somebody that I used to know
Heroes - King Crimson
Posted on the Friday Night music thread too.
Richard and Linda Thompson - recent Guardian interview about Linda's album of new songs, sung by other artists, because her she has voice problems.
She also speaks of knowing all the very talented British folk musicians of the 60's/early 70', like Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, John Martyn, and also worked with Gerry Rafferty of the Humblebums with Billy Connolly, and big hits with Stealers Wheel, like Stuck in the Middle With You and Baker Steet - a few years later all these people were dead - not Billy of course, of drink/drugs, and suicide in Nick Drake's case.
The folk singers were the wildest and most self destructive, made most rock stars look like lightweights!
Sandy Denny-
Squeeze, Cool for Cats,
"I'm invited in for coffee and I give the dog a bone"
Is one of the greatest lines of all time 👏🏻
Eels - novocaine for the soul
Mama I'm Coming Home - Ozzy Osbourne

Pomplamoose - 99 red balloons/take on me mashup
Genesis - throwing it all away
The original Hurt Song by Nine Inch Nails.
Everything but the girl - the only living boy in New York
