Morbid curiosity I would imagine.

This format is available online much earlier than MOTD is on.

Agree
I agree with the implied sentiment but license fee payers do have more reason to see where their money is going (or not as the case may be).  I don't watch match of the day or any other football decoration coverage and haven't done so for a long time.  Books are better and some radio coverage used to be well worth listening to but even that has gone downhill IMO.  Documentaries I have found to be very overrated and seldom worth the watch.  Quality is not a word I would apply to most TV or radio coverage in the present age.

Marcus

MoD needs to be binned - as does the BBC. Worked there briefly back in the day - got out quick - quite dreadful place.

I hear this argument that as a tax payer I should have a say in xyz... No you don't... Should you have a say how your children are thaught as school, if yes, in what detail? Should you have a say in intricate trade negotiations and the drafting of laws, state security and international relations? Should it be you meeting Macron with Rishi? The answer is that yes money should not be wasted, but that is why we have elections and freedom to protest. We elect people who appoint experts with a remit of running the BBC, border force, etc. If you have a problem with how your taxes are spent speak to your local MP.

This is why the British get walked over time and time again. Rather than sending a message by not watching (if you are of that opinion) they just can't help but watch out of morbid curiosity. Pretty disappointing but not surprising.

Or maybe the people that watched it did so because of the fact that those clowns weren't actually on it.

Thats like people saying that they had no interest in golf until it lost the commentary due to a technical fault and they found it endlessly interesting.

But with golf you don't get endless comments about how the players are walking what the coaches are doing blah blah blah. A lot of football commentators talk for the sake of it, Jonathan Pearce being the prime example.

I'd dump all the pundits and just have someone that barely knows about football introduce the games

Maybe Bongo could do it

I'd have to learn to read first Piri.

Personally.....I preferred the format. If it had commentary with the matches, I think it would be better obviously but I didn't really miss Gary and the gang truth be told. Nothing political about this. Sometimes I tend to dose off when some of the analysis for the bigger games seems to go on and on, and then inevitably, Fulham and the smaller clubs get the highlights later on with little analysis and by then I'm shattered  :005:

Should add, Fulham have often not been on last but my wife follows Saints, so naturally, I always stay up with her to see them as well.

I'd probably concede, there's a balance to be struck here with fewer time given to analysts/presenter and more in terms of extended highlights perhaps? I do wonder if the money paid to some presenters, could be put into production value instead as well perhaps.

Tetchy... 🤣🤣 You seem like a really nice person. Maybe English is not my first language.... ever thought of that? Is this forum exclusively for English only? ironic that the whole discussion is about use of language and here are you criticizing my post! Maybe you should be banned from the BBC, oops, from this forum... Nice personal attack on a piece I wrote quickly while on a bus... BBC is no different to the education system. You are forced to go to school, the same as being forced to pay a TV licence
Both are state run. So why as tax payer should we have a direct say in how they spend their money....

I fast forward through all the analysis which sums up how I feel.  Do we really need to b paying these rich exe footballers millions of pounds of our taxes for stating the bleeding obvious every weekend.

I think as host Lineker is excellent, but he should be accompanied by  analysts who know their football and don't just focus any research they on the top teams. Happy if they are not ex footballers. The problem you then get is that they would lambasted for not having played the game and it's easy  to say xyz. Yes I think it's rediculous that he is paid 1.4m the exec who signed that contract should be sacked. I bet you Lineker would happily do the show for 500k, but why should he if the market dictates he is worth more...

Yeah I don't think you can jump to the conclusion that more people liked this because more people watched.

There would likely have been a selection of people tuning in who never normally would because it's been a major story over the past 48 hours. And there was likely to have been fair weather watchers tuning in to see what it was like.

I thought it was drearily dull and joyless and one of the least entertaining programmes I've watched all week..

And that includes The Apprentice.

Me too.

F(f)CUK

I, for one, am pleased that the row has been resolved and that MoTD will return as before. I also fast forward through most of the programme to see the Fulham section and analysis. I revel in the analysis when we have done well

I thought MOTD was great. I just want to see the highlights, and the scores if I don't know them already. Nobody seems to like the long-winded boring pundits and their moronic 'analysis'. I think this is an opportunity for the BBC to evolve MOTD, which has looked and sounded dated for years. And please sack Gary Lineker. I don't want to see that overpaid hypocritical tax evader ever again.

I would be OK with seeing the highlights, but this wasn't that. Just the goals. I do enjoy the "analysis" though I don't always agree, especially the analysis of contentious moments.

Huxley, apologies if you already know this, but I am inferring from your post that you live overseas and don't understand the way the BBC operates.  The BBC is most definitely not "state run", and its managers are not appointed by the government. Indeed, its charter is explicitly and specifically set up so as NOT to be controlled by the state (although I believe in times of dire national emergency, the government of the day could invoke emergency powers which would change this). If we watch or record live TV on any channel or service, or use BBC iPlayer (which is more or less every household in the country), we are obliged to pay a one price licence fee of £159 per year, irrespective of income.

I don't understand the point you are making.  Whether it is taxation (e.g. education) or the BBC (licence fee), of course we should have a voice in how they are run.  When my children were of school age, i could try to influence what was taught through parent-teacher groups, or by speaking to the head teacher, which is how it should be.  It is also reasonable and right to try to influence BBC broadcasting.
