Quote from: SimonDaviesEnjoyer on January 28, 2026, 08:37:40 AMStrand Larsen for the right price would be great. I think he'd be useful given the way we play. 40m would be a crazy fee though, and that's what is being quoted in the press.
Not much more than Pepi and if we can get him for 35 million, about the same as Pepi. The difference is he is proven premier league level and can play this weekend

Somw Adama highlights

Quite a short highlight reel, will always have him to thank for that Old Trafford run. His cross v Forest didn't make it on but was superb, and he set up late winner away at Southampton last season too.

Not a player that ever seemed to arrive here truly, it was very much just a case of another club and doing a job.

I have a massive pet peeve with highlights showing one angle and deciding to suddenly change just before the strike, drives me a bit crazy.

He also set up Wilson for the Brentford goal

Yep, but that was more a genius bit of improvisation from a very awkwardly placed ball rather than a good assist imo

Quote from: bencher on January 28, 2026, 11:54:48 AMHe's always going to carry around the lack-of-end-product tag, unfortunately, and in recent months he hasn't even been as good as that. He needs a fresh start. He's been good in patches for us but never made the starting role his own. Between Chuk and hopefully Bobb, it's a pretty decent upgrade.

Lack of end product is a bit of a fallacy: since the beginning of last season he got more assists than anyone at the whole club apart from Jedi. His crossing with both feet was actually very decent: his curling cross with his weaker left foot after cutting inside vastly underrated and very dangerous.

More accurate to say would be he was a terrible finisher, but if he could score then he'd likely have spent a lot of his career playing at a top club.

Definitely an effective player (when fit) in his first 2 seasons, his form definitely dropped off this season for whatever reason. When his tail was up he was a frightening prospect to play against. My main gripe with him was his off the ball work rate but now it not the time to dig him out. He did a good job for us and I wish him well (apart form against us).
+1

nail on head.

I'm a bit ambivalent on this discussion regarding Adama's end product - can't help but feel a good few of his assists were not that well placed for the attacker who managed to do very well - ie Wilson against Brentford and Sess v Southampton.

His assist for ESR against Forest was delightful though.

I totally get there could be some unconscious bias at play here, we all do it as I probably am here.

DadCreature

It's very accurate to say that if Adama could finish we would never have been able to afford him.

As in many cases of different players, I'm sure. Conversely, I recall commenting many times last year where his crosses could or should have been finished with better shooting in matchday threads, but those things never made the stat sheet so end up easily forgotten, so it does go both ways. Either way, onwards we go.

Yeah, it's why assists can be such an awkward stat. It can be a 5 yard ball before a screamer, or someone could lay it on a plate and a player misses - but then when reviewing a player one will go down as proof of impact.

It's just hard to sway from one's gut feeling about a player. Adama always felt so awkward and out of sync with what was happening around him to me - but he absolutely did have a reasonable return in terms of assists.

I think if he was a player on a lesser salary I'd have been much happier and balanced about it, but knowing he is one of our better earners, his performances on the pitch didn't feel like it merited that. Maybe that's it.

Always going to Remember for the Man City away game was a Handful but left a Hat Trick out on the Pitch.

Yeh it's why advanced crossing stats + alongside perhaps expected assists over an extended period are a little bit better of a measure- although still even those stats aren't 100% perfect of course

Could well be that the cost is factoring, but then we got him on a free, if that makes ya feel any better ha. So even if he was earning a fair amount overall his cost will have been about 4m per year all in. And we may well get 2 back. All in all, decent enough.

Now we take punt on young Bobb. Here's hoping!

Quote from: hopper on January 28, 2026, 10:45:25 AMRegarding Pepi, this seems a common theme in our deals (and failed deals) - we start off quite a long way under and incrementally raise it til close and then there's some brinkmanship when the valuation is close. No idea if it's a strategy or just a firm belief in a player valuation and not budging.

Something like this happened with Andre and Hudson Odoi. But also with ESR, Leno, Diop and other successful deals.

Common theme indeed. We've no real visibility of how many deals "could" have been done if we'd offered a few extra quid, or how much we "could" have overpaid if we hadn't driven such a hard bargain on those that went through. I tend to think it's probably been counterproductive overall, but that's mostly conjecture and the cyncic in me. It's more relevant in summer windows where we need players urgently for pre-season.

Lyall Thomas is about as ITK as anyone else on this board so I wouldn't worry too much for now, and even if we do lose him, we'll likely have Chucky & Bobb permanently so won't be short in that position

The advanced stats lend support this take. He fairly significantly outperformed his xA last season (though not as much as Antonee). Alex and Andreas on the other hand underperformed.
