This is a first for me...Road Tax more expensive than Insurance.

If it makes you feel better, I now live in the States and my Mercedes insurance is 1,500 per year. Insurance here is out of control. House insurance 5,000 per year, health insurance 12,000 per year.

I got my car insurance down to under 1200 bucks a year for 2 23-plate cars with AllState, whereas Liberty were upping my rates from 1800 to 2400 a year for the same. Same with House insurance, 2200 bucks instead of 3500 with Liberty.

I'm a bit of a petrol head, always have been. Consequently me weekend car costs a lot of money to tax but that's my choice, no complaints. And I am well aware that I'm fortunate to be able to exercise such choices.

My understanding of US car insurance vs UK is that it's about 3x the annual cost, and a big reason for that is US insurers have to pay US healthcare costs in the event of accidents which can be hugely more expensive than the vehicles.

So not only do US residents have to pay expensive medical insurance but they also end up paying more for other insurances due to the privatised health too.

Thank god for the NHS, I say!

No idea what the tax implications will be...not doing it for tax reasons.... it's because they're reasonably priced second hand

Push bike is the way to go, the you don't have to worry about about tax, insurance, mot, traffic lights, zebra crossings, one way streets, or any form of road etiquette.

Car registration (Vehicle Excise Duty) does not pay for roads.

Though supposedly a larger chunk of it goes to transport infrastructure. Which means that it's all been blown on HS2- which has now, incredibly/stupidly/infuriatingly, become the most expensive railway in the world.

That's why the tube is far and away the most expensive subway for a big city in the world? Roads are crap. Public transport is crap. Taxes to support them go up and up and up
